At the end of the fifties, the local and international artistic field witnesses the interest and
spreading of the Informalist trend, more precisely defined in the Venice Biennial of 1964 with
the consecration of the so called New York School and the Abstract Expressionism next to the
Neo-Dadaism and Pop-Art, triggering in the most of the artistic power centers, Italy, France
and several Latin-American countries, intellectual curiosity, influences and even imitations. In
Venezuela, it gained the acceptance of many important artists who hesitated between the
figurative and the abstract, deciding on the tangible, the calligraphic freedom, the blasting,
the brittle material as anti-geometry reaction. According to some historians, it puts an end to
the abstraction, but it has been demonstrated, however, that both styles coexist since the end
of the fifties and the sixties, by defining the short stage since the end of the fifties and sixties,
by defining the short-term of 1959 and 1964, when the Informalist movement is ”officially”
born, develops and declines. In the searches that characterize the first stage of his formative
and professional life, Zabaleta also joins the trend; however, he realizes very soon that his
artistic sensitivity required something more, other expressive modes. Without being a
complete informalist artist, he makes a series of paintings that may be considered quite sui
generis as far as the principles of the trend is concerned. He declares in 1980, about this subject,
that since the sixties he deemed as necessary to be authentic, genuine when the young people
proposed the impulse of the primary, the gesture as a free creating internal force and in this
dilemma, he formulates the trend as the possibility to find himself; one of the paintings of this
period is Sol y mar (Sun and Sea) or Estructura (Structure). Very soon, he puts aside these
premises so that later on, towards 1968, his formal researches were oriented to the
Constructivism and Kinetism as a real possibility, pursuant to him, to draw up a formal
language resulting from conscious researches. Later on, he realizes that the point is not to
belong to some trend whatsoever, but to find oneself as a creator for having a free and honest
expression.
When he is granted the Award Andrés Pérez Mujica in the XXII Visual Arts Exhibition Arturo
Michelena from Valencia Atheneum, 1964, with the work of mixed technique, Sol y mar (Sun
and Sea) or Estructura (Structure), the artist was moving about a mixed style, between
Geometry and Informalism. A great color strength stands out throughout all the structure of
the composition. The chromatic tracing solved in spots of bright yellows and sparkling orange

colors, closer to French painter George Mathieu's ”tachism” than to the tangible value of
strong textures, differs from the various blue, brown and green shades of the composing core
which occupies the canvas center. The visual activity of the active light color on the pictorial
surface generates kinetic shadows that virtually displace the central mass away the canvas.
That year, the trend had a happy end because of the prestige achieved by the group of
Venezuelan informalist artists. Some critics have qualified it as the most important in Latin
America.
With a great confidence, he approaches to other expressive ways. According to his own
testimony, with regard to the development of his work, he comments that first ”a
Constructivism apprenticeship… helped me a lot to have a conceptual clearness. Later on, the
Tótems came out for a search of a Latin American identity. I was very successful in that trend
and I was awarded, but I gave it up convinced that there is no Latin American identity at all.
After that, I entered to an universal reworked language and I borrow Velázquez's characters:
infantas, meninas, kings, princes, and I place them in fantastic situations, detached from floor,
flying, surrounded by symbols: fishes, stars, fire, water, ground, like in medieval times. As of
that moment, I discovered that an artist must only look for a language with absolute coherence
and aesthetical message” (+).
The Constructivism furnishes him with the possibility of reflecting on the most conceptual
aspect of the artistic language with regard to alive and difficult cultural problems within a lively
and troubled cultural situation, as it was this period in Venezuela. Influenced by the
constructivist and kinetic Paris he had met, he let to be caught by an aesthetics that was not
going to requite to him, from a visual and emotional viewpoint, in the loving act requested to
him by the sensible creation. This short-term stage was important enough for opening the
path to the next one: that of Tótems, where the abstract artists' influence was also critical. The
exhibition presented in the Euro-American Art Center from Caracas in 1979, was the result of
one-year work of Incursiones en el constructivismo (Incursions in the Constructivism), an
eloquent guiding title about the exhibition meaning. In the catalog he affirms that ”it is the
encounter of these signals resulting from being awareness about why I fight and who I fight for
… painting implies quite a cultural valuation… the identity problems are not faced by asking:
who am I? But it is about to answer a question: IS IT.”
He begins Tótems series at the beginning of the seventies. He defines it as ”idiosyncrasy of the
space; magic, mystery that I did not accept due to the fact of being religious, but I did accept as
an approach to love and to telluric forces.” The series is basically related to an emotional
violent reaction with respect to his own identity searching, being focused on the localism, the
roots, the black, the autochthon. Later on, he got to the conclusion that on the basis of these
issues, he could not draw up an artistic language with universal features. ”My concern for the
Tótems started before my trip to Paris and was reinforced during my staying in Mexico. I was
always concerned about the identity problem… understood as a form of geographical and
cultural unification. I started from myself, from the fact that I am colored. I started to study the
different forms of African religiosity and to work on it. I started with African masks. Later, I was
getting more and more involved in the research until I discovered a work of great mystery to
which the people still refer as: 'The Totems Mystery' ” (*), and the poet Césaire's enormous

«negritud», labios que dirigen los rasgos amorfos de un rostro sin aparente identidad;

influence already mentioned. Zabaleta starts a deconstruction process that will go through
different aesthetical proposals throughout all of his work, in ”meninas” paintings, the
deconstruction is expressed in the surrealist atmospheres, where he places the figures
surrounded by fishes, landscapes in miniature, mouths, stars, numbers and whatever element
the artist's imagination conceives, that seem to move by following the breath of the figure
located at the center of the canvas and hanging on the air.
As a period of intense work, the tótems topic occupied all of his time, he made about three or
five paintings weekly. But not only the fierceness to catch time through painting was a life
experience, it was also the obsession to express a Latin American identity that supposedly was
more an idealist conceptualization than a reality. He gets rid of the heavy intellectual, plastic
and philosophical burden, accumulated in those first years of readings, discussions and
questions about the truth and the meaningfulness of art with social, political and philosophical
contents. ”As the time went by, I realized that the dogmas are useless, that they are enemies of
the truth and freedom.” So, in 1975, he introduces Del yo de siempre (Me as always) or Sin título
II (Without Title II), a painting of individual and dignity nature that shows from the beginning,
that his figurative proposals are not passive, that they were more connected with an
expressionist realism. This work becomes him the Arturo Michelena Award Winner of the
XXXIV Visual Arts Exhibition Arturo Michelena from the Valencia Atheneum, granted by a
Qualifying Jury constituted by Christian Sorensen, Víctor Valera and Oswaldo Vigas, with the
dissenting vote of Roberto Guevara. These paintings ”are remembered by their sublime
atmospheres, their dramatic monochrome and specifically for the presence of mouths, his
own mouth, enlarged and separated from the non-existent face. Worrying image that floats
over or under a color plane disturbed by whirlwinds of thick strokes that whirl as clouds full of
omens.” (1) Zabaleta contemplates himself as a tótem representative of African cultures, with
his rounded and enlarged lips as the unique symbol of the ”Blackness”, lips that control the
shapeless traits of a face with no apparent identity, examples Visión de Cristina (1978) (Cristina's
Vision), and Visión de Teodoro (1981) (Teodoro's Vision), that represents his son Teodoro's head.
Zabaleta did not escape the ”blackness” attitude that had instilled the Caribbean culture.
Nevertheless, considering himself as an universal artist, in order to perform his plastic work, he
rejected every possible potential pigeonholing in categories of ancestral. With the Tótems, he
expresses the need to achieve an alliance between the national (blackness-identity-ancestral)
and the concept of universalism proposed by the Venezuelan artists followers of the geometric
abstraction. By summarizing both concepts, in Visión de Teodoro (Teodoro's Vision), he
combines abstraction with figurative in dramatic representation, in which he, subtly, applies
his old admiration for Zurbarán's painting in the intense counterpoint between lights and
shadows and like the Cuban artist Wifredo Lam, he explores something like an Afro-West
syncretism. On the other hand, he valorizes Pablo Picasso's Africanism, as well as the
fundamental theoretical proposals of the Latin American art of that epoch, implicit in coming
back to the local roots that were stated in the Pau Brasil Manifest, 1924, and in the
Anthropophagy group's Manifest of 1928, which gave birth to an important group of Brazilian
artists which begin to watch to their country's internal situation, becoming the Brazilian avant-
garde of the twenties.

In any case, Zabaleta listened to the art voices of that moment in Venezuela. The Tótems series
will reflect the search of geometry and figurative synthesis, a criterion that invaded the
painting and the sculpture, from the tridimensional work of the ?nativist? period of Master
Francisco Narváez up to Oswaldo Vigas' geometrized figures and the magic realism versions by
Mario Abreu. According to the artist Zabaleta, it was an attempt to go back to the originary
cultural sources in concordance with the spirit of that epoch. In short, he creates a work of
symbolic and organic nature on the basis of different appropriations in the search of new
poetics that appear later on in the Meninas series.
In 1985, he illustrates the magazine Utopías y Praxis (Utopias and Praxis), of the Professors'
Association of Carabobo University, with six works of the totemic series. The paintings have as
center of attraction the thick and enlarged lips and are plastically solved on the basis of several
formal elements extracted from trends he was interested in. An analysis shows that he uses
expressionist and informalist strokes and traces, and at the same time big spots define
abstract spaces of the constructivist structure and, of course, without failing the figurative
detail that outstands in the composition. In a great act of plastic anthropography, he takes out
of each art historical trend, what it is indispensable to him so that in an action of complex
creating prestidigitation, to construct a work with proper characteristics. In Niño con
naturaleza (Child with Nature), Hombre con sus propios fuegos (Man with his own Fires), La
Espera (The Awaiting), and Tótem, the forms-figures invented are structured around enlarged
necks the same as columns splitting the pictorial space up in two vertical strips of strong
chromatism and end up in a distorted face, strangely evocating perverse feelings, an Irish
Francis Bacon's strongly expressionist reminiscence. With this series, Zabaleta assumes an
anti-geometrics position, non-rationalist; he reaches a type of organic-figurative abstraction
that contributes to consolidate the emotion as a fundamental meaningful element of the
organic geometric abstraction, a theoretical concept proposed as definition of Venezuelan
abstractionist avant-garde on the basis of the formal express analysis that supports the
difference of that defined as hard edge (hard-defined edges) developed in Europe and the
United States. This proposal is in the book La Pintura Abstracta en Venezuela 1945-1965 (The
Abstract Painting in Venezuela), published in 1979 by the author of this text on Zabaleta. A
deeply emotive series, the Tótems express no rhetorical pathos at all. On the contrary, they are
philosophical synthesis that reflect the existential reality of the moment that concerns the
artist.
In between Tótems and Meninas, he performs a group of paintings named by him as las Magas
(1979 to 1987) (The Magicians), almost simultaneously with the first meninas, and that might
be considered as his fundamental backgrounds. With La maga de la mandolina (The Magician of
the Mandolin), the most recognized, he obtains, in 1980, the Award Juan Lovera, Acquisition
Reward granted by the National Art Gallery, Caracas in the XXXVIII Arturo Michelena
Exhibition Room from the Valencia Atheneum; this painting is incorporated to the Gallery's
collection. Its plastic particularity lies on the exalted color incidents to which the pallet is
submitted by the artist, allowing the figure surrounded by a subtle air atmosphere, to be
suspended by a cosmic force; the linear perspective is annulled in order to recover the
traditional air perspective inherent to the landscape and the typical vaporous modeling of the

impressionists. Precisely, the bottom part of the figure, the skirt, is wrapped up in a
daydreaming ?landscape,? not-real, almost metaphysical, that many critics define as magic or
fantastic realism. She holds in her hands a roussonian mandolin. The painter's chromatic
sensitivity arises with strength and violence, accounting for himself when he declares that ?it
woke up in my soul, after a long night of eight years,? those were times when he painted in
white, black and dark shades.
The topic of La maga de la mandolina (The Magician of the Mandolin) is a dream, nothing seems
to be solid on that canvas. The lines, forms and colors are similar to a shower of slight strokes,
short and long, spread over the plane; it is the moment when Zabaleta begins to translate
classic past artworks into a post-modern language. This moment represents the detachment
regarding the identity concerns and the problems of dependence to any avant-garde. Now, he
cares about his reality, his life and his painting. He radically gets away from the style accepted
in the Venezuelan plastic environment, he cares neither science nor technology; he tries to
come closer to the imaginative audacity of strong emotional impact as geometry anti-thesis,
by considering that an artist's fundamental reality is based on the strokes and the color spots,
not what they represent, although, at every step, he takes care of the expressive content of his
painting. As all the Latin-American artists, he has also nurtured himself of dreams, myths and
particular realities.
Zabaleta's iconography is the result of appropriations turned into dreams that take possession
of the support reality, either the work, bi-dimensional or tri-dimensional. The different
elements that energize the space are in permanent movement; everything floats, absent lips
having looks, ghosts enclosed in soap bubbles, cards that are useless for playing, meninas,
fishes, water, crystals in a daydream poetic and portraits in miniature of somebody who, from
far away, observes the scene under full development: a visual real manifest of artistic freedom.
He invents his own avant-garde on the basis of re-readings, appropriations, works' and artists'
paraphrases of the great art, emblematic works that have gone down in art history, ?since I
started to paint, I always did it 'watching' to another painter. In the school drills I did not watch
the alive still life, the model that I had to draw or paint, I watched another thing, extracted from
Paul Cézanne or Henry Matisse, for instance. My behavior was strange to the professors.? It
means that the appropriation is not only about the figurative subject, but also about the
pictorial techniques and plastic codes. He takes out of all the historical movements and trends
what he needs and after, he formulates a visual vocabulary to be translated into stylistic
changes and plastic functions. Consequently, the creating experimentation of this man has
been extraordinary, by causing visual aesthetical, extracted from different artistic schools, to
coexist in a same work. By transcending to himself, Zabaleta's avant-garde becomes a
reconstruction factor of a new model to tackle the image and its contents.
The Venezuelan pre-Hispanic and Mesoamerican female figures, fertility goddesses support
his trajectory to the Magas (Magicians) and from there to the Meninas. Without ever leaving
aside a will of iron to communicate humanistic meanings and emotions; there is neither freight
nor change in the core subject that, for many years, occupies his work. But do there exist a
change in the manner of conceiving the plastic structure and the poetic and sublime
atmospheres he records on the canvas. He grounds the new achievements by consolidating his

own artistic avant-garde, on the basis of the direct contact with the Spanish Painting of the
Renaissance and the Baroque. As to Velázquez's Meninas, he will be obsessed by the infanta
Margarita and the queen Mariana; as to Goya's black paintings, the shady and caricaturizing
atmosphere and as to the famous portrait, La Familia de Carlos IV (1800), he takes the central
group away for making the painting El Festín (1997-1998) (The Feast), with Zabaleta's
particular pictorial imprint. In addition, he draws several sketches for a mural conceived under
the same Goya's composing structure and characters, outlining the expressionist technique of
free strokes. In this work, he follows, although not faithfully, the Spanish genius' neo-baroque
trend, counterpart of his interest for Court's figures and specially the meninas. In his Goya's
work paraphrased version, La Familia de Carlos IV (Carlos IV's Family), you may appreciate the
same light incandescent imprint while it differentiates from the modernist proposal from
which he captures the phantasmagoric essence of Goya's typical characters, and the
irreverence of this artist for Spanish nobility. Zabaleta emphatically infers, that modernity
permits them to look like to men and women of his particular context that, although some of
them are wearing supposedly aristocratic nobility clothes, he brings them back to a different
situation, almost popular and domestic, thanks to the manner he uses the stroke, the dull color
and his characters' attitudes.
El Festín (The Feast) is an emblematic painting that represents itself, a critical attitude with
regard to a contextual reality, that stated from an ontological point of view, shows the human
beings as hostages of their own conflicts. As far as its plastic value is concerned, by blurring
forms and figures with open traces, elastic, fluently strokes and slightly texturized surface, he
transforms the characters into caricatures of themselves, pathetic images, that by dint of
spots and transparences may ”live” in the painting. Inherent to his solid academic training, the
result obtained is sustained thanks to the use of all the essential elements of the plastic forms.
The scene outlined by the group, apparently messy drawn, but in a detailed assembling, may
be seen like a Polaroid snapshot. By rejecting any affection attitude, the characters approach
one to others, in a horizontal stripe composition as in La Familia de Carlos IV (Charles IV's
Family). The central figure, the king, in Zabaleta is in negative, is an empty space, the others do
not communicate themselves: the painting simulates a parody of the human cruelty that
produces a perverse attraction.

extraordinary that I spent the whole day studying those images. I made a series of studies
about infanta Mariana from Austria. I was shocked by the cheeks color, a warm red that
contrasted with the hair's flowers cold red painted in a queer burgundy and the deep blacks at
the backgrounds.? But before that year, in 1975: ?I had already made some meninas that I
granted to Casa de las Américas in La Havana and I entitled Mujer vegetal (Vegetal Woman) a
painting all in green and white.? La maga de la mandolina o Maga II (The Magician of the
Mandolin or Magician II), belongs to the same year. In the research about this image a plastic
structure is focused, whose representational value is independent of any imitative quality, so
that it must be understood as the visual history of a figure-form in its most academic formal
qualities: line, form and color and its concomitant values.
With regard to Mariana from Austria, Zabaleta is interested on the monumentality at the
center of the canvas, not the interpretation of a personality or a character. The composition
follows a pattern from the Renaissance because the figure is placed in pyramidal structure and
as Velázquez, although he departs from the precise surroundings of the latter, he interprets the
light, as formal element, in a detailed splitting between the lighted areas and the shadows. He
cares about capturing the light around the central figure in order to emphasize her bi-
dimensional quality, and by putting all the pictorial substance in the costumes and accessories
”decoration.” In the work La otra parte de ese sueño (1990-1991) (The Another Part of that
Dream), shows the queen Mariana dressed with the same costume and in the same position of
Velázquez's painting Doña Mariana from Austria (1652), but she is enriched by adding in front of
her, the figure of infanta Margarita, exactly as it is in the full-lenght portrait performed by the
Spanish painter in 1653. The two figures are conscious appropriations represented in an
ambiguous situation within an imaginary, great, luminous and colorful space. The same as
ellipsis or proper images, some of them are shown immersed in their own universe, and others
in their dreams, which is a constant in the artist's work from Valencia. Despite to visually
apprehend the two characters' external features, Zabaleta creates a spatial illusionism that
separates Mariana and Margarita from their historical and hierarchical reality, to turn them
into the main characters of a theater action. The image, classical and known, becomes an
autonomous signal together with the decorated stage that serves as a background and where
elements of different nature freely navigate by following an expressionist-surrealist will. In
some paintings, the background plane is neutral, just color, but in others, forms and figures, in
reduced dimensions, circulate around that one which occupies the main space.
By taking Mariana from Austria's figure, as leitmotiv, ?character who is inside me,? and by
analyzing the manner to visually locate it as far as plastic image is concerned, it is evident that it
represents a symbol, a female and love archetype, that Zabaleta tends ?to glorify, magnify, to
become it a symbol.? So, ?being in love with love,? he sublimizes the beloved object, getting it
away from the undesired reality. Pursuant to the latter, both Mariana queen as well as
Margarita infanta, are linked to the sublime feelings; in short, these are emotional dimensions
that define atmospheres and fill up with life other figures that live in his painting. In 1994, in the
recent founded Gallery of Art from Fundación Previsora, he carries out an individual exhibition
entitled by him Meninas, peces y cristales para una poética pictórica (Meninas, fishes and crystals
for a pictorial poetics), paintings series in which he reiterates the enigmatic atmospheres with

characters from the past, and as central figure, Velázquez's Meninas, in addition to the catalog
with a text of this book's author, a calendar with the reproduction all of the works was offered
to the public. The poetic and oneiric load is also here present, which is an unavoidable presence
in the artist's whole work to be resolved in essential and not in apparent plastic universes.
Nothing is discrete in these luminescent abstractions, the forms move themselves in spaces of
light and shadows creating ethereal surfaces and kinetic visions provoked by the planes
simultaneity, that fascinate due to the complexity and richness of the elements. Another
Velázquez's character used by Zabaleta is the prince Baltasar Carlos and the Infante Felipe
Próspero, either accompanying the queen Mariana, together with infanta Mariana or in
individual versions. In the painting Niño a caballo (A Child Rides a Horse), he appropriates the
image of Retrato ecuestre del príncipe Baltasar Carlos (1635-1643), he takes the prince's figure
out from the landscape, locating it against a monochromatic background plane. The same
happens with El infante Felipe Próspero, painted between 1657 and 1661, and paraphrased by
Zabaleta in 1993.
Isolated in the space, floating in strange clouds filled up with small figures, there is the Gran
menina azul (Great Blue Menina), in his world fragmented, with a quite realistic dog and other
Velázquez´s characters that protect her. A technique based upon subtle transparences and
chromatic gradations allows him to create a convincing reality in different formal and
meanings dimensions. The small figures floating around the menina azul are equally shaped in
a first plane. The perspective, intentionally absent, provokes an apparent unbalance among
the forms, thus generating a casual effect as far as the composition is concerned. The central
figure seems to be expecting events to come. The chromatic game, which characterizes the
whole artist's work, is centered as the core that attracts the spectator's glance. Brilliant and
sonorous color codes, seemed to lie on the different techniques used by Zabaleta, so that it is
impossible to isolate his work from important and fundamental proposals since the
Renaissance until nowadays. It is not by chance, that he refers to his theoretical proposals, to
the systematic study of art, then transformed into a deep reflection, so that he has carried out
throughout all his career, both in the thematic as well as in the technical-formal aspects, the
combination of techniques and visual vitalities with his aesthetical concerns and a sense of the
beauty fitted to an absolute modernity. For example, the color atmospheric intensity of a
painting that he considers a milestone in his career, Dos Visiones (2004) (Two Visions), is radical
and responds to an ambiguous perceptive situation. A group of personalities met in a
psychologically attractive strange situation, shows the appropriate surrealist framework to
expose the loneliness as definition of the human condition. The young girl, at the right side,
has the eyes open, looking directly to the spectator, others have them blindfold and the rest of
them have them closed, but they are perceived active with the glance, may be addressed by
the hand which holds a heart. The pictorial space is conceived so that the forms-figures, even
the color spots, do not lie on the support. The latter, in a visual simulation, moves from one side
to another of the plane surface. The same as the collective portraits, the painting has some
”costumbrista” features linked to the characters' mystery displayed, whose identities are
unknown. The extended and sketched strokes, which is a characteristic of the most of the work
related to Velázquez's appropriation are directly related to the treatment of the light, linked to
an optical-plastic system aimed at conferring to the pictorial surface a certain visual
82
fascination, as it happens, for example, in an outstanding work such as Muerte española
(Spanish Death), where the contrasts between light and shadow dramatically invade the
scene. This proceeding impacts the relationship between gleaming and fainting lights, and
emphasizes the optic illusion created by the background that projects the figures as if they
come from the support's interior, similar to spooks springing from nowhere.
Dos Visiones (Two Visions) generated a particularly exciting moment. An unexpected and happy
event takes place in 2005, when the Long Beach Symphonic Orchestra, United States of
America and the National Symphonic Orchestra from Mexico, inaugurate the Suite Dos
Visiones (Two Visions), inspired by this painting of the Latin American Art Museum Collection
from Long Beach, California. Dos Visiones (Two Visions) was chosen, out of twenty competitors,
by the composers Ana Lara from Mexico and Roberto Maggio, from USA. Each of them wrote
three movements, basing their music on three ideas inspired by Zabaleta's painting exhibited
in MoLAA (Museum of Latin American Art) in an exhibition organized about the topics: Magic
and Realism, Humor and Irony, and Nationalism and War. The suite presentation was
accompanied by a painting's photo-choreography.
The series previous to 2004, and that started at the beginning of 2000, it is considered by him as
the ”death epoch.” The ghosts that go across his life and his painting are clearly marked by a
strong emotional stress. Many personal conflicts under development refer to his internal
concerns instead of external affairs, it corresponds to Muerte española (Spanish Death)
thematic. A grid marked in his lines, configuration and volumetry, similar to ?an English drawer
where the secrets are kept”, according to the artist, serves as background to the figures, but
for the common spectator would rather be the niches wall where the dead people's ashes are
kept. The topic corresponds to his personal ?visions,? the menina in shadows and levitating,
protects the three Velázquez's buffoons, standing up in front of the spectator as unique
possibility of hope. In another painting, Infanta Gris (Grey Infanta), lonely, rigid and lighted up
that it seems to be silver-made, the life for this character of such a deep and pleasant lyrism,
goes by between the shadows and lights contrast of its universe that it is just the typical dark
grid of this series that bears it, by mentioning, likewise, the golden brilliant shining which
emerges from the interior of the canvas, to serve it as the spectral base in its elevation from the
bottom plane. In all these paintings, the reticle or grid proposes geometric contrasts that
derive in a differentiation between the figurative forms and the space where they are located.
An innovative aesthetical proposal in the figurative painting made in Venezuela during those
years, another more element to reinforce the artist's personal avant-garde. Although the
central figure(s) is (are) always in the traditional front position, the elements which surround it
are not. That is why the visual turmoil - rather the visual explosion - that it is produced when the
different segments of the pictorial surface are oriented in different directions, for instance,
little fishes, cards, mouths, numbers, portraits act as perspective boxes as of the stratigraphic
fragmentation of the space and the visual dialogue between forms and space-light, thus
emerging a sort of urban iconography originated on the basis of one of the most emblematic
images of art history: Velázquez's menina.
The New York period, 1989-1993, could be considered alluvial in Zabaleta's production due to
the amount of works performed by him. The menina is already a mythical iconography,

realismo, Humor e ironía, y Nacionalismo y guerra.

a phenomenological obsession that, simultaneously has implied several concepts: materials,
mean, form, content, subject, expression and representation. In La maga de la mandolina (The
Magician of the Mandolin), the green face with no defined traits, simulates a sphinx mask and it,
entirely hanging on the center of the support surface, dissociates it from its origins in order to
transform into a more affective and emotional presence than actual reality. In many occasions,
Zabaleta has declared that he considers these paintings songs to love. By taking realities as
their own, that he transforms into abstractions resulting from imagination, he reaches the goal
of granting a deep emotion to his characters, by presenting them with a mysterious beauty,
wrapped up in atmospheres of vaporous veils or plunged into crystalline waters. By analyzing
the latter, it is evident that the volumetry has been eliminated in these paintings with the
purpose of generating certain voluptuous fluency that goes through the pictorial surface,
while those elements circulating around it, in cosmic movement, act as existential framework.
He continues the menina-obsession-topic in the years after the New York period. In this first
decade of the twenty-first century he has acquired a new nature focused on the
experimentation with endless possibilities of the deconstruction form, both in the bi-
dimensional and tri-dimensional format. The sculpture, the materials assembling, wood,
paper, cardboard or iron, as well as the bronze cast, is created with the imprint of the artist's
analysis and reflection, upon relying on that proposed by Michel Foucault in his Meninas
analysis in the book: The Order of Things. An Archaeology of the Human Sciences (1968). As far
as Zabaleta is concerned, it refers to a ?dismantling in order to create a free vision, far from
dogmas,? and according to his words: ?Foucault states in this book that The Meninas is a
painting that represents the renaissance eidetic thought, as well as ideas related to the
representation, the art emulates, similar to, it was a renewal with respect to medieval
symbolist schematization which is the dogma. This thought is being spread and finally leads to:
the system will create a new jail where the bars are invisible, these bars are the new dogmas, as
the modernity nowadays. This Foucault's reflection reaffirmed an idea that I was making,
researching, I had so many years ago.?
In some way, Zabaleta's reflection about Foucault's concepts is clearly justified from Totems
series to Desconstrucciones (Deconstructions), his present work. The subject is still the same
mono-subject; the Menina. More than ever, he acknowledges his interest for the great masters
of the present and the past. He does not care the origin or the source of a work: ?I just think on
the affinity and the encouragement that it can generate in me as creator. So, I take the
elements of that picture for making them to coexist, and to constitute another pictorial reality:
My pictorial reality. I have been researching Velázquez's work during so many years, especially
approaching myself to the meninas, almost as an obsession. I have surrounded them with a
symbolic environment in pictures of big dimensions? (2), Zabaleta looks at the great art.
With regard to the Exhibition Del plano al espacio tridimensional (2006) (From the Plane to the
Tridimensional Space), he emphasizes that he was interested in sculpture since his years in the
art school through masters Luis Cardona Villegas and Eduardo Gregorio, having in mind the
beautiful woman's sculpture of La Glorieta Square. In this personal exhibition, he exposes Una
nueva visión (A New Vision), a sculpture in cardboard pieces assembled to be shaped in bronze

menina through a long process, ?I made a cardboard sculpture, I set it up in 3D, I made one
hundred and ten molds of his parts. These were cast and assembled in a resin and fiberglass
structure that later on went to the bronze and, finally I assemble the segments and the
sculpture is ready.? Afterwards, the contact with sculptor Alexis Mujica, who he has long
discussions with, about art and its mysteries, the exchange of ideas leads him to great
concerns; ?the opposed angle, painter's and sculptor's reflections in mutual game, vindicated
my love for volume. To start at the point of a half way gone through, to imagine the works
observing the art history, to get excited for that not observed before, now as a new look, and
asking to myself how it is made, why so dull, why so brilliant, the reason of this texture which
gets diluted in the smooth body who captures the light in all of its glory? (3). These last
reflections and those formulated throughout a long way gone through are dedicated to the
laborious work of a series of bi-dimensional and tri-dimensional works defined by him as
Desconstrucciones (Deconstructions), another stage ruled by ?the experimentation with
cardboard boxes that I become sculptures tied up with wire and assembled, that I cast in
bronze without loosing the texture? (+).

no representacional.

In the Desconstrucciones (Deconstructions) he denies matter and volume. He favors the
dematerialization and a spatiality closer to the Constructivism in a formal order but no in an
aesthetical one. Iron sheets welded, cardboard or plastic pieces assemblies, rebars constitute
the figure as of plane segments both in the interior and the exterior, irreducible to the
sculptural form. With this, he corroborates that his main concern has been referred to the
problems of form-figure and background-figure-plane, as far as their meaning, expressivity
and visual configuration are concerned; a good example is Mariana (2009), made in cardboard,
wood, wire and marker, brittle materials indeed, but what it is important in the final result is the
incorporation of a 3D design, that is to say, a state-of-the-art process. Una visión de Mariana
(2010) (A Mariana's Vision), qualified as ?drawing with no support” is a drawing in the physical
space made up of wire rod threads and soft wire, in its levity and apparent fragility, at first, it
seems to be of an ephemeral nature due to ?matter” absence (or volumetric substance) and the
materials used; here, the empty space conquest functions poetically by making it magnificent
in its virtual conception. Other examples are La Valenciana I (2005) and La Valenciana II (2009).
By analyzing these supportless drawing sculptures, it is proven the presence of a ?light space,?
the same that in the bi-dimensional drawings Una visión de Mariana (2009) (A Mariana's Vision),
Retrato de Margarita (Margarita's Portrait) and Mariana II, both from 2010, as well as in the
paintings of the same epoch, Visión de Mariana o Estructura lineal (Mariana's Vision or Linear
Structure), acrylic on canvas from 2009 and Margarita I (2010).
As to the ?light space”, present in this Zabaleta's last work, he could trace back to Tótems, what
lead to firmly state that the artist has handled the same elements since his formalist-
constructivist stage until nowadays. This light-space implies a programmatically
constructivist proposal structured around the purest essentiality of the handled meanings and
concepts. The thematic and plastic meanings mix values of experimental nature and enclose
the artist's principles of rejecting dogmas that limit the creating freedom and the expressive
need. Definitely, Zabaleta finds out the matrix of all his work in the descontrucciones
(deconstructions), in the chromatic and linear reticles, as well as in the light and space
modulations. The whole thing is summarized in a continuous line of the artistic career path of
this free virtuoso of painting and sculpture.
The material is important in the thesis of supportless drawing. It may be a piece of carboard, of
iron, or a rebar portion or piece that serves as the sculpture's support, La línea y la transparencia
(2010) (The Line and the Transparency). Zabaleta argues that there are no noble materials; the
only noble thing is the art proposal. Without disconnecting of the constant subject, the
?menina? form destruction process has taken him to the highest transparency and to being
able to reveal realities around, at the back or inside her. Planes of thin metal rods or round
rebars are interpenetrated, overlapped or juxtaposed in the composition of a tridimensional
drawing in the physical space. By rejecting the volumetry in favor of the volumetric form's
dematerialization, he develops and aesthetics based upon non-objective and abstracts
proposals, although the object results in menina configuration. Finally, the known subject is
solved in an artistic proposal of conceptual and not representational order. As a semantic
reminiscence, Zabaleta recovers and bares the material's original meaning, he gives it another
one on the basis of the directional combinations, similar to a spider web knitting, concept that
definitely represents the sculpture traditional notion.

Sculpture as tridimensional means and the work integrated to the architecture as civilian work,
they have been two creative dimensions that have called his attention. Nevertheless, the
plastic-formal behavior is quite different in each of these disciplines. The volumetric sculpture
and also the last series that have focused his researches, called Desconstrucciones
(Deconstructions), are decorative within the abstract, even though it seems contradictory,
while the civilian works are rooted in constructive and kinetic postulates, always stated with
geometric rigor. It could be started with the vitrals for Valencia's Cemetery Chapel of 1997 and
Toro (1998) (Bull), a piece of great dimensions located at Valencia Bullring; the faces were a
fundamental subject, Rostro (Face) an the relief Visión de una Infanta (Infanta's Vision). As far as
the civilian works are concerned, all of them, located in the city of Valencia, are mentioned as
really beautiful and important: the exterior protector, integration to the architecture at
Mammary Research Center facade, of La Viña Sector; the optical-kinetic structure that serves
as external walls to La Toscana Pizzeria, is formulated as a chromatic modulation, by using the
color for saturation on the metal constructive base. The statement is to integrate architecture
and urbanism as a consequence of the architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva's proposals in his idea of
?arts integration? in the Caracas Campus, Central University of Venezuela.
Other works correspond to the external fences of Mall Bonomi, a modular relief composed of
one only piece, by using the permutation as a form of composition, thus creating two images in
positive with one element; the peripheral fences of the Multi-sport Center Misael Delgado; the
polychromy of Montes de Oca Square Facade and the vitrals El sermón de la montaña (Sermon
on the Mount) from Valencia Diocesan Seminar. For the artist, both the Toscana Facade and
Montes de Oca Square belong to the integration concept.
In the search of new plastic poetics, this Venezuelan artist's work is transformed into message
transpositions as conceptual characteristic. It proposes different expressive possibilities
around myths such as the national identity, but also about the awareness levels that the
creator has, when he appropriates of universally known images that belong to the history,
expressed in works with hierarchical validity of great museums. Without being considered
derivative of any concept, either formal or conceptual, Zabaleta's appropriation proposes a
?myth-poeisis? when being transferred, with such an amazing contemporary plastic vitality,
from his historical temple to the sacred environment of a painting that it is of his own.
One of the remarkable aspects in Zabaleta's artistic practice is his drawing mastering. The
rigorousness of the formal and academic studies that he carried out in his different formative
stages, as well as the perseverance in the use of this tool in all of his work, have become it an
indispensable norm. Since the earlier informalist stage, going through all next stages, until
reaching the supportless drawing, he questions the present artistic production and its
meanings. There are no norms or dogmas, but definitely, the artist, with no contradictions and
hesitations, is aware of the need of methods and methodologies to reach the highest point in
his work. In the series Tauromaquia (Tauromachy) that he works for many years, and even he
performs several paintings of expressionist trend on the same subject, for instance in Corrida
de Toros (Bullfight), he experiments with the line value in different and several directions and he
formulates the hypothesis that drawing is fundamentally a concept rather than a form, and it

may be analyzed pursuant to a formal categories system that refers to the line itself and to
other values, among them, to be an abstract and symbolic concept. In this case it is possible to
talk about the line with expressive value, as it corresponds to the twentieth century art giant's
drawing work: Pablo Picasso, but also of the permanence of the tracing repetition as
meaningful value. For instance, in the drawings, Perro Rojo (Red Dog) and Perro Negativo
(Negative Dog), as well as other drawings, the unity between line and occupied space, is
directly proportional to the subject absolute expression, developed in analysis processes
sensible to the work itself and to the receptor's eye.
In all Zabaleta's work, it is perceived a dynamic drawing that conducts the pictorial or spatial
field structure, concerning the profiles, defined or not, of the figurative or abstract elements
that circulate in said field. However, it may not be considered in this work, whatever period or
formal system it belongs to, a defining drawing in volumetry, especially linear, equal to the
visual and technical program, that defines his present sculptures: the Desconstrucciones
(Deconstructions) as ?supportless drawings? in a non-volumetric tridimensional scheme, but
that it could be also applied to Tótems or Meninas series, when he places the figurative or
geometric forms in a light-space with no fixed support on the plane, transforming them into
transparence, thanks to the behavior of the light and shadow zones, until reaching to create
unreal atmospheres more similar to the game of the oneiric with the symbolic. But this
drawing has nothing of rational; the arabesque of the line and even the of the color-line, the
fluency of the expressionist stroke, sometimes even impressionist, corresponds more
precisely to what the same artist has defined as the emotion that each of his works must have.
One of the last Descontrucciones (Deconstructions) sculptures series is Maga nocturna (2010)
(Night Magician), of civilian format: 420 x 300 x 200 cm located in the Spiwak Hotel, in
Chipichape Mall, Cali, Colombia.

Wladimir Zabaleta's first steps in art begin in the stormy seventies decade. It is a time of pros
and cons in the national plastic field. Several avant-gardes dispute the hegemony, by
juxtaposing one to another. When coming back from Paris, he finds out that the abstract art
(Mateo Manaure, Luis Guevara Moreno, Alejandro Otero, Mercedes Pardo), competed with
Kinetism (Jesús Soto, Carlos Cruz-Diez) and with Constructivism (Víctor Valera, Carlos
González Bogen), while Informalism comes out by opposing to all the aforementioned
movements (Elsa Gramcko, Carlos Contramaestre, Maruja Rolando, J.M. Cruxent, Humberto
Jaimes Sánchez), and at the same time, the figuration challenged to itself in a new formal and
conceptual interpretation (Jacobo Borges, Régulo Pérez, Alirio Rodríguez, Alirio Palacios). His
young concerns match up with the experiments that in the creating field had place in
Venezuela. These changes are forecasted by the creation of the group Los Disidentes (
Dissident) in Paris, at the middle of the fifties, composed of artists who supported the
geometric abstraction as the spearhead of the academic teaching in the Plastic Art School
from Caracas and the painters' landscape subject of the so called Caracas's School, with the
Fine Arts Circle as reference. A dissident's consequence was the opening of the Free Art
Workshop, that offered the possibility to work an art free from academic patterns. The closing
of the Venezuelan Art Official Exhibition Room, 1969, due to polemics caused by the granting
of awards to works deemed as outside the avant-garde movements, was another bullet shot
point blank, as well as the presence of dissimilar trends that gave few possibilities to an
aesthetical dialogue in the space the Museum of Fine Arts. The Young Artists Exhibition Room,
is opened, whereas Arturo Michelena's Exhibition Room from Valencia Atheneum continued
being prestigious in artists' acknowledgment assessment and an open possibility to announce
new national plastic talents. In short, it represented an open window to show the reality of the
Venezuelan art. In this brief tour, it may not be left aside the Experimental Art Workshop,
mentioned in the previous chapter.
Another evidence of the cultural and plastic effervescence of the environment, marked by the
years in-between the end of the fifties and the whole sixties, is the appearance of literacy and
artistic groups that will heat up the environment, by contributing, in one side, to the general
confusion and, on the other hand, to revitalize the creating broth that characterized the capital
city of Caracas as the culture catalyst center. All of them had a leftist political turn that,

abstracto (Mateo Manaure, Luis Guevara Moreno, Alejandro Otero, Mercedes Pardo),

unfailingly, instilled the thought and the creating and existential attitudes of the intellectual
and artistic class. So important were the magazines Tabla Redonda Round Table);
the group El Techo de la Ballena (1961-1964) (The Whale's Roof), with provoking anti-esthetical
proposals that it is strongly expressed in the exhibition Homenaje a la Necrofilia (Homage to the
Necrophilia), considered as scandalous because of the death expressions and highly leftist
political content involved; the Círculo El Pez Dorado (1960) (The Golden Fish Circle), will make a
lot of racket with exhibitions of neo-figurative and informalist nature and discussions activities
on Venezuela's political and social aspects at that time. This group's innovation was the
symbiosis between re-known artists with students of the Visual Arts School Cristóbal Rojas.
Zabaleta is granted a First Honorable Mention in Exhibition Room I organized by the Circle;
while in Maracaibo, second center of cultural turbulence, 40 Grados a la Sombra (1962-1964)
(40 Degrees in the Shade), was founded, a group focused on the exhibition and literary activity,
with a homonymous publication.
Precisely, these years represent avant-garde moments, some of them valid and others not so
much. Gradually, Venezuela gets incorporated into the art universal trends. Some trends
coincide and simultaneously develop, by contributing to the artistic language renewal. Some
of them outlived for many years and others are left behind to give way to new expression
forms. As far as the young people are concerned, the Abstract Expressionism and the
Constructivism are related to a great deal of the art production, while on the other hand, a sort
of Figurative Expressionism is going to be denominated New Figuration. A lot of foreign
references are placed, as valid influences, in the American artists' figures, Jackson Pollock and
De Kooning, among others; the French Hans Hartung or Yves Klein, the Irish Francis Bacon,
next to the Kinetism developed by Jesús Soto, Julio Le Parc and Carlos Cruz-Diez in Paris.
Within this turmoil of assuming new languages, without being yet prepared for that, Zabaleta
came up. An important anecdote that is always mentioned in the conversations with the artist
refers to, that in his own words: ?when I was studying second year in the Fine Arts School, I
painted a picture in my house's backyard, I grasped a machete and I cut it in the middle. Then I
sewed it with wire and, put some petroleum on it and I fired it. When it was extinguished, I
painted it again and I scraped for writing a graffiti. The picture that is kept in the collection of
Florelia Mariño's Inheritance, liked a lot to the critic of art and a Gallery Owner, Clara Sujo.
However, Braulio told me: get trained first, before to invent. Because painting is not a matter of
a picture or easy success. And I took his advice. Just imagine If I would have jumped off that cliff
when I was 16”(+).
To go through this period of Venezuelan art, let us know that the offer was diverse as far as
plastic movements and trends is concerned; there were even extraordinary conditions for the
emergence of artistic groups, art workshops and sponsorship private initiatives, as well as the
collecting development like opening paths towards a future of artistic creativity, enriched by
the appearance of professional art galleries and regional museums. The experimental and
innovative enthusiasm, reached, of course, the youngest generation, among them, Wladimir
Zabaleta. During these two decades, since 1950 through 1970, three generations of artists
performed their works suitably oriented to their sensitivity and creating interests. The most of
them was on favor of the Geometric Abstraction, another one in favor of the Informalism and

Varias tendencias

a third part explored new languages established in the figurative image. In the middle of such
an extraordinary coexistence, an exceptional climate of freedom was experienced in the field.
It was affirmed the need of an universally language expression, a premise that, at the middle of
the forties, leads to a great amount of Venezuelan and Latin American artists to travel to Paris
in order to work in the ideas laboratory and experimentalist research that the city had become.
Without having being stooped the emigration to Paris as artistic goal, some of them begin to
come back at the beginning of the sixties. The abstract work fills up the museums, the recently
created galleries with this purpose and an enthusiastic collecting insufflates winds of change in
the art environment of a yet provincial Venezuela, that opened up itself to the cosmopolitism
of the great capitals. In this period, particularly bright in the visual arts plane, it is built up in the
fifties, the Caracas Campus under the architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva's concept and design,
who put into practice the arts integration concept, by conceiving buildings and campus
structure and accessories as a sort of open-air museum with the geometric abstraction,
mainly, as artistic watchword.
An extremely important aspect was marked by the artist in relation to be aware of the fact that
the creative act is a cognitive act that may be expressed through any means or modality and
with several and different tools. New paths were set forth for the development of those other
languages which will characterize the following decades, already proposed in the object
dematerialization postulates and of kinetic art space, for instance, or in the performing of non-
.tangible art. The concept and the idea became art per se, appearing the ephemeral nature
work, partly sponsored by the new technologies as well. The boom of the eighties and nineties
starts with a defined interest in drawing and performance. Without doing a ?clean slate,? the
visual image researches carried out by previous generations served as the base for re-
conducting an innovative willingness that he would explore in the sources of the
experimentalism, by exalting an eclectic nature in the artistic production, including an anti-art
aesthetics that searched the formulation of a new reality for art. The generation of the eighties
was formed by a group of artists born between the forties and the fifties. It nurtured from the
so called conceptual art, and, precisely, Zabaleta will begin a conceptualist investigation for his
work.
Consequently, diverse trends will meet in the eighties and nineties; the artist's freedom
seemed to be absolute. The ?neo? and the ?post? of the historical avant-gardes are revealed, in
addition to the cybernetic and technological aesthetics with the ?mail art,? the ?fax art,? the
video, the installation, the performance and other considered as new formulations. Going
through violent passions, the antagonism between geometry and figuration kept in effect
within an anti-dogmatic and progressive environment in all directions. It is within the
figuration, where Zabaleta signs up, although at any moment, he joined to antagonism and he
had his passing internship in the Kinetism. The continuity in the figurative painting of his
subjects and obsessions, places him nowadays, as one of the most representative artists of the
Venezuelan artistic reality, with interests focused on the painting-painting. In Latin America,
according to Marta Traba: ?the boom implied during the years from 1950 until 1967 (the dates
setting may be flexible), is related to a new conceptualization of the artistic fact, but also to
political-economic situations that led Latin America to get off his traditional anomie.
119

centers from Europe and United States. The three trends of that moment were the Abstract
Expressionism, to which we must add the Informalism, the New Geometry and the Kinetism;
and the Symbolic Figuration? (Quot. Work., page 85). The same takes place in Venezuela.
But before, the artists of the beginning of the twentieth Century, members of challenging
avant-gardes marked different paths. The artist's free conception to assume and assuming
himself as the major character of a history, led them to review that of their own and that of
others'. The images appropriation of the art history, emblematically transformed into
archetypes, due to the popularity reached throughout the times, since their creation until
becoming icons of the modernity, even more of the post-modernity, and of the art market, was
considered an important plastic and thematic recourse in accordance with the contemporary
artist's historical social framework where he made his work. Sometimes, as a reject to the
academy and in other opportunities, possibly the most common, as an answer to the particular
sensibilities of attraction that goes beyond the merely plastic formal, in order to create new
conceptual speeches. The figurative images reinterpretation extracted from the classical
painting and emblematic works of the great art history, became a common practice in the
seventies and eighties; even though it had been used since the tenth decade, especially by
irreverent creators such as Picasso who made a reflection about his contemporaneousness
through an image of the past. Diego Velázquez could be the artist who has attracted the most
as far as appropriations and paraphrasing is concerned. The Meninas, the most celebrated
painting, Retrato de la Infanta Margarita (Infanta Margarita's Portrait) in a common scene in the
palace surrounded by his ?meninas,? a maid of honor and, as it was usual in the court, of a
buffoon to cheer the moment, not lacking the dog; as well as the portrait La Infanta Margarita
(1653) (The Infanta Margarita), shall be present in the work of many Latin American artists, but
only Wladimir Zabaleta has made of it a continuous personal subject throughout the last three
decades.
Among the Latin American artists who have assumed these emblematic images as subject,
bringing them to contemporary up-dated frameworks of their social and cultural times, are
Alberto Gironella from Mexico, who became the menina an Aztec pyramid, Herman Braun-
Vega from Peru, who conferred social status of domestic scenes upon her, and Carmen
Aldunate from Chile, who has paraphrased her enclosed in the Renaissance classical
paraphernalia, and even Antonio Seguí from Argentina, who in some periods of his work used
her in his crowding painting. Fernando Botero, from Colombia, in 1959, performed his own
Botero's version of one of the Velázquez's famous pictures, El niño de Vallecas ( 1637) (The child
from Vallecas), with the title El niño de Vallecas (as per Velázquez). But he has also paraphrased
icons of the art history as La Gioconda (1503-1506) by Leonardo Da Vinci ,for his Mona Lisa at
twelve years old of 1959, and his versions made in 1961 of the painting Camera degli Sposi
(1470), by Andrea Mantegna in his famous series Camera degli Sposi (Homage to Mantegna II),
even appropriating from the title of the Italian painter's re-known work.
In Venezuela, Carmelo Niño has made use of Infanta Margarita, the central figure and
Velázquez space of the painting Las Meninas ,in his work Commenting Velázquez (1981);, while
a painter as Francisco Bugallo transformed Mona Lisa into a pictorial monument and Zapata
conceptualization is linked, of course, to all which was taking place in the emitting power

cultural, están Alberto Gironella de México, quien convirtió la menina en una pirámide azteca;
124
into a caricature inside a bus. Quite before to all of them, Salvador Martínez used it to make a
mockery of art history. In the eighties, Diego Barboza painted a series of meninas, relevant
within the new figuration of those years in the country. The list is big, we will mention the
important sculpture-installation Las Meninas (1992), by María Eugenia Bigott; Erasmo y La
Venus del Espejo (1990) (Erasmus and the Venus of the Mirror), by Pedro Morales , paraphrasing
the Retrato ecuestre del príncipe Baltasar Carlos (Prince Baltasar Carlos's Equestrian Portrait) by
Velázquez. With regard to domestic appropriations, the most desired will be Miranda en la
Carraca (1896), by Arturo Michelena.
Although in the sixties the abstraction was a real creating motivation in the search of
universality for the Latin American and Venezuelan art, in the eighties the figurative subject
turns, insistently, over the research of the visual aesthetic of the art history. Such research had
as conceptual base, to cooperate with domestic values understood as contextual realities to
the artist himself and his axioms with universal values, that are interpreted as the study of
artistic and cultural traditions of the mankind. The proposal was based upon a strategy for a
new visual speech.

To conclude, it is pertinent to quote Wladimir Zabaleta in the interview with the journalist and
critic of art Alfredo Fermín, ”my work has always been a song to freedom. When I was fourteen I
wanted to become a great artist from a formal point of view. Nowadays, I –simply– want to be
a free artist.” Day after day, new opportunities, new encounters with life and with art, but
always coming back to the departure places, to the ships that took him to intuited and reached
fates thanks to searches, errors and achievements, to signs and passwords offered to him to
find out answers to so many questions asked throughout the long way.
The dynamic, happy and decided character of Zabaleta, together with the need to formulate a
theory and to perform a work that would position him in the map of the Venezuelan and the
world art history, without anecdotes, superficial ornamentations or frustrations, pushed him
to overcome stressing situations and creative concerns. He detaches his painting from the
physical-real reality in order to express meanings more closely referred to formal and
conceptual qualities of metamorphic representations. He emphasizes a symbolic character to
define an aesthetics related to the most sensitive of art and culture of the contemporary man.
To him, art is the result of the cognitive and mental experience, to which he adds a deep
emotional stress. The continuity of the process has been a personal and proper decision.
Zabaleta, as figurative artist, fables about characters that being so re-known, belong to the
collective unconscious. Velázquez's Meninas or Leonardo's Gioconda, ”expressed in the magic
of life manifestations, deprived of a collective, sometimes unknown, may result in a rough
definition addressed to a sociological and even an anthropological reading. They are
exhaustless matters that correspond to the evolution of a social and artistic culture in
permanent development. They are also formal and critical speeches placed at the drama,
energy and heart core, always in permanent conceptual expansion… The figurative painting as
depositary of an art ideology, according to the humanism that, in contradicting terms,
represents the ongoing times, has meant for so many people, the death of art, but for the
most, it has been their avant-garde transfiguration upon entering, simultaneously, other
formal and thematic elements which confirm rigorous and firm foundations in its present and
future projection”(4). In his painting, the artist Zabaleta sings to love, to the female as the
endless man in love with love.
