Welcome Mr. White
A Message from our Principal
My name is Mr. White and I am very proud and excited to be the Principal at Brandon
Gate Public School. It is a privilege for me to work with our students, staff and the
community to make our school the very best it can be. The goal is to work together to
ensure that all students can achieve success in an inclusive, caring and nurturing learning
environment.
I am very familiar with the Malton Community as I have spent 2.5 years as the Vice
Principal at Darcel Avenue Senior Public School. In addition, I also spent 4.5 years as the
Principal at Royal Orchard Middle School in Brampton. It is with great pleasure that I am
returning to Malton to continue to support this vibrant community to build and grow.
At Brandon Gate Public School, I will work with our diverse staff to provide a well-
balanced program that engages students to grow and learn so they can achieve their true
potential. We will focus on not only lifelong skills to be successful students but also skills
to be kind, compassionate, respectful and responsible citizens.
I look forward to working with you and developing true partnerships that values each
student.
Thank You.
K. White

BRANDON GATE GIVES BACK
The staff and students at Brandon Gate Public School fundraised
$600.00 through a pasta lunch at school. Students in Ms. Kaur, Ms.
Varley, Ms. Thomson, Ms. Vassell and Ms. Kang’s classes worked
hard to fundraise money for the Malton food bank. Students and
staff walked to the local Walmart to purchase food items to donate.
Some of the items were rice, flour, oil, corn,
pasta, pasta sauce. We feel so fortunate that we
could help give back.

Report your child’s immunizations to the Region of
Peel online
When registering for school for the first time, parents and
guardians are required to provide up-to-date immunization
information for their children. This includes registering for
kindergarten.
You can update your child’s immunizations online. The online

an Ontario Health Card, take a copy of the immunization
record to the school. Make sure your child’s name and date of
birth are visible on the record.
Call Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700 if your child does not

It’s Cool to Have Character!
Our December Assembly was all about Empathy. Empathy means to "putting oneself in
another person's shoes.” Empathy means the ability to sense other people’s emotions, coupled
with the ability to imagine what someone else might be thinking or feeling.
For the month of JANUARY our character focus is HONESTY. Honesty means speaking the
truth and acting truthfully. Honesty is doing the right thing when no one is watching.

Regional Learning Choices programs unlock passions
Regional Learning Choices Programs offered by the Peel District School Board empower students by providing them with opportunities to develop and explore skills in a particular area of interest. Regional programs are open to all students who meet the criteria for acceptance.
Transportation is not provided for students in regional programs. If students have been accepted into a regional program and they live within the school boundary, they are eligible for busing only if they meet the distance criteria outlined in the board’s Transportation Policy #39.
All regional programs include annual fees, including a non-refundable $40 application fee. Students and their families are encouraged to attend the information night for the program of their choice to receive more information about the program and application details. Important dates to note:
Applications open Applications close
ELEMENTARY Jan. 27, 2020 at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 10, 2020 at 3 p.m.
SECONDARY Applications for secondary regional programs are closed Winter bus safety The following winter school bus safety tips will help to keep your child safe throughout the winter months. Allow extra time to get to your bus stop. Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the
early morning and late evening. Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need
extra room to stop when there is snow and ice. Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to
prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or road surfaces. Dress appropriately—winter clothing, hats, and boots
will keep you warm. Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children
waiting for the bus. Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or
on the street. Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could
fall down on the ice and get hurt. Talk to your child about what to do if the bus is late. Here are some suggestions: When possible, wait with your child for the bus. Make sure your child knows a phone number where
he or she can reach you or another trusted adult. Teach your child how and where to get help. Talk to
your child about what a "safe" stranger is.
Nutritious Lunches
Help Children Learn
Use Canada’s Food Guide to help your child get nutrients and energy needed to have a
successful school day.
Try to give your child some choice about what to take for lunch. If possible, get your
child involved in preparing meals.
Give your child a variety of healthy choices. Keeping your child interested in lunch is the first step to making
sure it is eaten.
Make the food easy to eat. If it will take your child a few minutes to unwrap a sandwich, it may be skipped.
Resist the temptation to routinely send sweets, pop, chips and cookies in your child's lunch. Save treats for spe-
cial occasions.
Try to avoid fast food or pre-packaged, convenience lunches, which are often high in salt and fat.
Do your best to role model healthy eating behaviours for your family.
To speak to a registered dietitian about healthy food choices, call EatRight Ontario at 1-877-510-5102.
Now It’s Your Turn: At Brandon Gate School, we are always interested in feedback from the community. You are invited to return this portion of the
newsletter with your comments whether they be expressions of praise or suggestions for improvement. Each month we will do a
random draw to award small prizes to a few of those who have returned this form.
