NEWS LIBRARIAN INSIDER 1 P UBLISHED BY IOP P UBLISHING You have probably heard about the development of Scitopia. You might not be aware however of all the benefits this new free service can offer to researchers at your institution. Alan Henry (www.appscout.com) commented that ‘Scitopia is a great resource to add to your list of bookmarks if you’re doing any kind of academic research. The search is speedy and the results are accurate and useful, something I can’t always say about a Google search for a scientific term’. Scitopia offers researchers a highly effective free portal that searches over 3.5 million scientific documents and 300 journals from more than 20 leading society publishers including IOP Publishing, IEEE and the American Institute of Physics (AIP). Using the Scitopia search allows you to quickly find the most cited research in scholarly work spanning 350 years. Scitopia has been designed to be simple, user friendly and fast. As you would expect, you can access the abstracts free of charge and go straight through to the full text if you have subscriber access to the respective journal. Naveen Maddali, Online Services Product Manager at IEEE, responsible for Scitopia, says ‘Working on scitopia.org has been very exciting for me and the team. We’ve spent the past year and a half developing the site to make it as quick and easy as possible to find high quality research. We are content with our success thus far and plan to build upon it in 2009’. IOP Publishing is proud to be involved in the development of this service. EVENTSAmerican Library Association’s 2009Midwinter meetingThe ALA’s 2009 Midwinter meeting was held in January in Denver, CO.We were pleased to partner with the SciTech Section (STS) of the ACRLdivision. To support this active group of librarians, IOP sponsoredtheir member dinner which was held at the historic ‘BuckhornExchange’ restaurant. Guests dined on such exotic delicacies as RockyMountain Oysters, quail, and buffalo prime rib. Over 60 STS librariansbraved the snow to join us for this unique dining experience, wherefriendly conversation carried on for several hours.

We’d like to express our thanks to STS Chair Virginia Baldwin(University of Nebraska-Lincoln), Joe Kraus (University of Denver)and Denise Bennett (University of Florida) for all of their help inmaking this event a success.

We look forward to hosting a similar event next year. If you attendedthis year’s dinner, be sure to pack your STS/IOP scarf for Boston!

New COUNTER statistics interface

As more libraries convert to electronic-onlysubscriptions there is a growing need to ensure thelong-term survival of digital publications. IOP isinvolved in a number of archiving initiatives to ensurethat our online journal articles are preserved for thefuture.

Porticowww.portico.orgPortico is a not-for profit electronic archiving serviceinitiated by JSTOR in 2002. Portico creates and storesarchival versions of publications from the content filessupplied to them by publishers such IOP Publishing,Oxford University Press and Elsevier.

CLOCKSS www.clockss.orgThe CLOCKSS Initiative is a partnership of publishersand libraries formed in 2005. Multiple copies of digitalcontent are collected in a distributed archive housedat sites across the globe.

Both of these services are dark archives designed tooffer access to electronic journals only after a ‘triggerevent’ such as:

• a publisher ceases operation• a journal ceases publication and is no longer

accessible online

For more information on these archiving initiatives, contact Judith Barnsby, Head of e-Development [email protected]

IOP and dark archives – preserving digital content for thefuture

In August 2008COUNTER publishedRelease 3 of theCOUNTER Code ofPractice for Journalsand Databases. Incollaboration withour partner, MPS

Technologies, IOP Publishing has been working on anew user interface, MPS Insight. MPS Insight haspassed an independent COUNTER audit and alreadyprovides the new reports and functionality required byCOUNTER Release 3.

In addition, COUNTER-compliant reports for IOPscienceare now available from January 2009.

IOP Publishing customers can view their COUNTERstatistics by logging in at stats.iop.org/counter

The functionality of the new service is much more user-friendly, with over 96% of the librarians testing theservice rating it as ‘easy’ or ‘very easy’ to use. Otherbenefits of using MPS Insight are:

• More timely reports – MPS Insight provides IOPPublishing with the opportunity to report significantlyearlier in the month than is required by COUNTER.

• SUSHI – available as a method of delivery ofreports, in addition to the familiar CSVspreadsheets. This enables libraries with SUSHIenabled-ERM-systems to automate reportcollection.

• Easy Administration – allowing libraries to makereal-time changes to accounts and passwords.

• Additional Users – facility for librarians to requestadditional user accounts to access stats, forexample allowing faculty staff to access reports.

• Easy to Use – attractive interface designed withinput from librarians to be easy to navigate andaccess reports.

• Consortia Administration – access consolidatedconsortia stats and individual member sites’ statsfrom a single login.

• Alert Notifications – optional email alerts whenreports are updated.

IOP customers can use their existing COUNTER loginand password to access the new interface. If yourequire a login, or have forgotten your login orpassword, e-mail [email protected]

We welcome your feedback so if you have anyquestions or comments, please contact us [email protected]. More information about COUNTERcan be found at www.projectcounter.org

60 SECONDS WITH...Sylvie Moine, Negotiator forthe Couperin Consortium,Head of Sciences andTechnologies CollectionsDevelopment and ofElectronic Resources Service,University Library Lille 1,France

How long have you worked in your current job?Since 1998. Formerly Head of Science and TechnologyDepartment, I have been responsible for Science andTechnology collection development and manager forserials and electronic resources for two years.

Which fictional character would you most like to be?Thea Kronborg in Willa Cather’s novel ‘The Song of theLark’, moving from rural and bitter beginnings inColorado to Chicago and the Metropolitan Opera Houseand becoming a famous Wagnerian soprano.

What are you most afraid of?Of a world which loses its memory and encroaches onthe human mind too much, depriving it of freedom andpreventing it from thinking.

Name one place that you would like to go back to?The Peloponnese, particularly the area of Argolida(Tyrins, Mycenea, Epidaurus) and the area of Mani (its

tower houses and its small Byzantine churches), thebeauty of the scenery and the hospitality of itsinhabitants.

What is the last film you watched? The Dead, John Huston’s last movie, brilliantlydirected: very little happens, just the usual flow of lifebut every detail contributes to a feeling of nostalgiaand, with the final epiphany, to an intense poignancy.

How do you like to relax after work?Every time the weather is fine, I cycle along the narrowroutes in the countryside around my place and, duringthe week-ends, in west Belgian Flanders.

Can you highlight three qualities of your institution?A valued partner in study, teaching and research of theuniversity, which supports the building of our newlibrary, a Learning Center. A participant of the Frenchconsortium Couperin and an active center forexpanding digital resources, A lively place forcollaborative efforts of innovative ways.
