Today’s Matchup“4 Downs” with the Mountaineers

1 - Saturday’s game will mark Liberty’s first-ever matchup with a Big 12 opponent. West Virginia was a member of the BIG EAST Conference the first time the Flames faced the Mountaineers (2009). Liberty Head Coach Turner Gill is familiar with Big 12 football, from his time as an assistant coach at Nebraska (1992-2004) and as the head coach at Kansas (2010-11).

2 - Liberty junior tight end Will Johnson spent two seasons (2012 and 2013) on the West Virgin-ia football roster, but never saw game action for the Mountaineers.

3 - No current Liberty players hail from West Virginia, but the Mountaineers’ roster includes three Virginia natives. These include Gary Jen-nings (Stafford), Brendan Willis (Centreville) and Dayron Wilson (Woodbridge). Jennings and Lib-erty freshman DL Javon Frazier were football and basketball teammates at Colonial Forge H.S.

4 - West Virginia junior kicker Josh Lambert hit four 50+-yard field goals and an NCAA-record 16 40+-yard field goals in 2014, earning All-America honors. Meanwhile, Liberty senior kicker John Lunsford nailed six 50+-yard field goals a year ago, garnering All-America recognition of his own. Lambert made all three of his field goals during this year’s season opener, while Lunsford connected from 52 yards versus Delaware State.

• Liberty Head Coach Turner Gill has recorded one win over a Big 12 opponent as a head coach, a 52-45 Kansas victory over Colorado on Nov. 6, 2010.

Flames vs. the FBS

• Liberty has recorded three wins over FBS oppo-nents all-time, including triumphs over Eastern Michigan (1989), Ball State (2010) and Appala-chian State (2014).

• The Flames are 1-4 against FBS opposition under Turner Gill.

• Liberty will also face FBS foe Georgia State in 2015, traveling to the Georgia Dome on Oct. 3.

Flames on the Road

• Liberty won four of its last five road games to close out the 2014 season, highlighted by victo-ries at No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina and No. 15/15 James Madison (FCS Playoffs first round).

Milestone Watch1.5/3 - With 19.5 career sacks, Chima Uzowihe

ranks No. 2 in both Liberty and Big South histo-ry. He needs 1.5 sacks to pass Gardner-Webb’s Brian Johnston (20.5) as the Big South career leader. Three more sacks would enable Uzowihe to break the program record of 22 sacks, held by Aaron DeBerry (2000-03).

3 - Nick Newman enters Saturday’s game three tackles shy of 100 for his career. He would be-come the second active Flame with 100 career stops, joining Chima Uzowihe (102).

8 - Dante’ Shells needs eight receiving yards to reach 1,000 for his career.

25/50 - If Liberty wins at West Virginia, Turner Gill would achieve two coaching milestones, in-cluding his 25th victory at Liberty and his 50th win as a collegiate head coach.

50 - John Lunsford’s next made 50+-yard field goal will be the 10th of his career.

318 - With 318 passing yards, Josh Woodrum would become the second Liberty QB and the third signal caller in Big South Conference history with 8,000 career passing yards.

A Liberty Win Would ...

• Be the Flames’ first-ever victory over a Big 12 op-ponent.

• Make Liberty the first FCS squad ever to re-cord a win over the Mountaineers and the first non-conference team to win in Morgantown since LSU on Sept. 24, 2011.

• Mark the Flames’ inaugural triumph inside the state of West Virginia.

• Mark Liberty’s fourth win all-time against an FBS foe and give the Flames an FBS triumph for the second straight season.

• Even the Flames’ all-time record against West Virginia at 1-1.

• Give Liberty a 2-0 record to start the season for the first time since 2010.

• Be Turner Gill’s 25th victory at Liberty and his 50th triumph as a collegiate head coach.

• Mark the Flames’ fifth victory in their last six road games, dating back to the 2014 season.

Quick Hitters• The Flames are currently ranked No. 13 in the

• The Flames have captured seven Big South titles in the last eight years. They are 37-6 in confer-ence games since the start of the 2007 season.
