Liberty vs. Virginia Tech Virginia Tech (19-24) swept Virginia in an ACC series last weekend, capping a 4-1 week that included a win over Liberty on Tuesday and a loss at Radford, Wednesday. The Hokies’ biggest win of the season came on Feb. 24, when they defeated then No. 20 Michigan, 1-0. Carrie Eberle leads the pitching staff with a 9-13 record and 1.60 ERA, while Forest, Va., native Jordan Dail is 6-9 with a 3.15 ERA as a freshman. Emma Strouth is Virginia Tech’s top hitter, at .280. The Lady Flames and Hokies have met 50 times in a series that dates back to 1996, with Vir-ginia Tech leading, 36-14. The Hokies have won 18 out of the last 21 meetings, but the two teams have split doubleheaders each of the last three seasons. Liberty has held Virginia Tech to one or zero runs in four out of the last six meetings.

Liberty vs. Virginia Tech Recap - April 10, 2018 With the International tiebreaker in effect in the bottom of the eighth, Virginia Tech’s Caroline Schoenwald hit a walk-off double, providing the only scoring in the game as the Hokies edged Liberty, 1-0, last Tuesday at Tech Softball Park. Virginia Tech’s Carrie Eberle allowed just one hit, pitching to one batter over the minimum. Liberty pitching allowed just four hits.

First to 30 With its 3-2 win at Longwood on April 6, Liberty became the 13th NCAA Division I team, and first from a non-Power Five conference, to reach 30 wins (30-8). The previous 12 to make it to 30 wins this year included: Washington, Auburn, Georgia, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Florida, UCLA, South Carolina, Florida State, Arizona State, Oklahoma and LSU. The Lady Flames have clinched their 13th 30-win season in program history, and third in a row.

Team Notes- In Liberty’s series at Radford last weekend, there were 10 total runs scored (Liberty 6, Radford 4). It is tied for the lowest-scoring three-game conference series in program history. On April 29-30, 2016, Liberty outscored Gardner-Webb, 9-1, in a three-game sweep. - The Lady Flames have posted 11 shutouts so far this season, more than halfway to the program re-cord of 20, set in 1999. Liberty blanked its first three opponents of the season for the first time since 1995. Saturday’s one-hitter against Radford was Liberty’s first combined shutout of the season.- Liberty is now 8-4 in one-run games during the 2018 season after going 6-8 in such games last year. That includes two walk-off wins (Feb. 22 vs. North Carolina; March 17 vs. Campbell)- Liberty has twice won games when trailing entering the seventh inning, and did it in back-to-back games, against Central Michigan (Feb. 16) and versus North Carolina (Feb. 22), both in nine in-nings. The Lady Flames are 2-0 in extra-inning games this year.

Player Quick Hits- 2017 Big South Pitcher of the Year Julia DiMartino is the first Liberty pitcher with multiple seasons of 17 or more wins, and she has now done it three times (17-12 in 2016; 22-10 in 2017; 18-7 in 2018)- Sophomore Elizabeth Engler (6-2) has gone 4-2 with a 0.85 ERA and a .182 opponents’ batting average in her last eight appearances, dating to March 20 at North Carolina A&T.- Junior Chase Cassady, the reigning Big South Pitcher of the Week, is 3-0 with a 0.49 ERA, one shutout, 15 strikeouts and a .120 opponents’ batting average in her last three starts.- Autumn Bishop’s 20-game hitting streak was the longest hitting streak by a Liberty player since Ka-tie Zavodny’s program-record 23-game streak in 2013. Her league-leading 19 doubles this season are two shy of Shannon Tanski’s single-season program record of 21, set in 1996.- 2017 Big South Freshman of the Year Amber Bishop has already recorded more hits in her career, 139, than any other player in program history through their sophomore year.- Alexia Taylor is the program career record holder with nine career sacrifice flies, and is one of only four players in program history with 200+ hits, 100+ runs, and 100+ RBI.- Sarah Robertson has been hit a team-high four times this season, including twice with the bases loaded. Her seven multiple-RBI games are good for second on the team.- Jaclyn Amader scored the winning run in Liberty’s first walk-off win of the season, Feb. 22 against North Carolina, and recorded a walk-off single in a 4-3 win over Campbell, March 17.- Kaitlin McFarland has caught eight out of Liberty’s 11 shutouts this season. She batted 5-for-6 (.556) with a double, homer and two RBI in the Radford series last weekend. - Madison Via has two three-hit games to her credit. After entering conference play with a .167 bat-ting average, she has hit .341 with eight RBI in 15 Big South games as a freshman.- Deidra See went 4-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored on March 24 at PC. It was her first multiple-hit game of the season, as she had hit 6-for-22 heading into that game.- Taylor Hoffman is batting .266 this season and is tied for third on the team with 10 multiple-hit games. She has driven in nine runs this year after posting two total RBI as a freshman.- Jasmeen Click is batting an even .300 (9-for-30) in 14 conference games after entering league play with a .207 batting average.- Madi Clarke went 2-for-3 during game two at Radford on Saturday, her first two-hit game since going 2-for-3 against Charleston Southern, April 23, 2016.

A Stadium You Need to Visit Liberty Softball Stadium was listed by NCAA.com in a 2017 article, “College Softball: 7 Stadiums You Need to Visit.” Liberty is the only school to have both its baseball and softball stadiums recognized by NCAA.com last year.

Liberty Softball Stadium Named No. 6 College Softball Stadium Through a fan vote conducted by FloSoftball.com, Liberty Softball Stadium was voted the sixth best college softball stadium in the nation in 2017. Louisiana Lafayette’s Lamson Park was voted No. 1. In 2016, Liberty Softball Stadium appeared second on the list, trail-ing only LSU’s Tiger Park.

Stadium Dedication Liberty officially dedicated its new facility prior to the Lady Flames’ doubleheader against Presbyterian on April 3, 2015. A pregame ceremony took place, as former Liberty head coach Paul Wetmore provided the invocation. Liberty President Jerry Falwell, along with current head coach Dot Richardson, threw out the ceremonial first pitches. Becki Falwell and Liberty Director of Athletics Jeff Barber were also a part of the ceremony. The highlight of the pre-game ceremony was the announcement of naming rights of the field, which will now be called Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium. Dwayne Kamphuis, a financial supporter of Liberty University and the softball pro-gram, is a legendary fast pitch softball pitcher. Kamphuis traveled the world playing in exhibition softball games as part of the renowned “King and His Court” team, headed up by Eddie “The King” Feigner.

Opening Games Liberty posted a 3-2 record at the Liberty Softball Classic, March 19-21, 2015. The Lady Flames opened their new Liberty Softball Stadium with a 9-2 win over Rider on March 19, and picked up wins over Princeton and Quinnipiac as well.

Firsts for All During the first game in Liberty Softball Stadium history, March 19, 2015 against Rider, Megan Robinson recorded the first hit, Madison Kotchey the first double and RBI, Mickey Loveridge the first triple, Tori Zavodny the first stolen base and home run and Chandler Ball the first pitch, strikeout and first victory. Extra, Extra Liberty downed Coastal Carolina, 5-4 in 10 innings on April 18, 2015 the first extra-inning game in Liberty Softball Stadium history. The Lady Flames are 3-2 in extra-inning contests at Liberty Softball Stadium.

Lights, Camera, Action The new stadium is equipped with the latest technology, making it ready for televi-sion broadcasts. A majority of Liberty’s home games are scheduled to air either as full TV broadcasts and/or as live video webstreams. With home and visting radio booths avail-able, all home games will air on 90.9 FM The Light as well.

HEAD COACH DOT RICHARDSON149-140, 60-48 BIG SOUTH

Two-time Olympic Gold medalist, Dr. Dot Richardson has led the Liberty softball pro-gram to new heights. In 2017, she led Liberty to its first-ever postseason championship, as the Lady Flames captured the National Invitational Softball Championship title with a 3-1 win over Lamar. The 2017 Lady Flames went 46-24 and won the Big South regular-season title with a 16-5 league record. Liberty went on a program-record 13-game winning streak in 2017, while also holding teams scoreless for 44 straight innings at one point. For her efforts, Richardson was named 2017 Big South Coach of the Year.

- Richardson was instrumental in the planning for the state-of-the-art Liberty Softball Sta-dium, which debuted during the 2015 season. Liberty Softball Stadium, a 1,000-seat struc-ture, opened March 19, 2015 with the Lady Flames defeating Rider, 9-2.

- The Lady Flames have improved in the win-loss column every year under her guidance, including an NCAA-leading 18-win improvement from the 2014 to 2015 season. Liberty then posted a 15-win improvement from 2016 (31-28) to 2017 (46-24).

- On Feb. 13, 2015, Richardson led the Lady Flames to a 5-2 win over Arkansas, the first win over an SEC team in program history.

- The 2016 season saw Liberty post a 31-28 record, the team’s first 30-win season since 2011.

- During the 2017 season, Liberty set or tied 22 team single-season records, 12 individual single-season records, five team single-game records, three individual single-game re-cords and nine single-season freshman records.

- Coach Richardson’s team went 5-1 against ACC competition in 2017, including wins over Syracuse, NC State, Virginia (twice) and Virginia Tech.
