News From Katrina Brossia, Business ManagerColorado public schools receive funding from a variety ofsources. However, most revenues to Colorado's 178 schooldistricts are provided through the Public School Finance Act of1994 (as amended).

In budget year 2016-17, this legislation provides for over$6.3 billion of funding to Colorado school districts via statetaxes ($4.1 billion), local specific ownership (vehicleregistration) taxes ($159.4 million), and local property taxes($2.12 billion). Moneys provided via the Public School FinanceAct of 1994 are available to each school district to fund thecosts of providing public education.

AST Tip Of The Week

Study Timeline (Part2) Twoweeks before the exam, you should continue to do a weeklynote review. Youshould also make a list of questions you missed on homework andquizzes. Firsttry finding the correct answer in your notes or book. Then makeanappointment to speak with your teacher about questions you still do notunderstand. Thisis also a great time to start using online resources to make astudy guide or work throughpractice exams.

Classical Manners for the Modern Youth

From the 1934 high-schooltextbook "Good Manners" used in"Household Science" class of thatday:

“Rule No.6. Setting the Table. Learn toset the table correctly, so thatthe tablelooks convenient, orderly, and balanced. At each cover, place the knife at therightwith the blade turned in, the forks atthe left, tines turned up. Place the spoonsat the right of the knives, bowls turned up.

Use just enough silverfor the meal. When two or more forks areused, the fork on theoutside is used first. This rule is used for spoons too. Place all silver in one inchfrom the edge of the table. Place the water-glass at the tip of theknife. Place thebutter-plate at the tipof the fork. Lay the napkin straight atthe seft of the forks. Themother’splace is nearest the kitchen, the father’s place is at the opposite end ofthetable. If you are in doubt as to whereto place a dish or a piece of silver, put itwhere it will be easiest to use inthe service of the meal, without crowding anyplace.”

Alumni Update From Mrs. TerryBridgmon, grandparent of Nathan BridgmonFuller (LCHS ’16) now attendingMorningsideCollege in Sioux City, Iowa.

LCHSreceived a nice handwritten letter last week from Nathan BridgmonFuller’sgrandmother Mrs. Terry Bridgmon. She wrote to tell us that hergrandson Natestarted college as a second-semester freshman due to creditsearned at LCHS, and that heearned a 4.0 in his first semester atcollege. As such, he made the Dean’s List.

“Ithought perhaps you would be interested in Nate’s progress as I believe you andtheschool deserve a big ‘Thank you’ for playing a part of how life is workingout for him to date,”Mrs. Bridgmon wrote. She reports Nate is thrivingin college and loves all of his professorsand all of his coursework. Along with her letter, she enclosed a copy of Nate’s Dean’s Listcertificateand the notification Nate received from the Provost.

Inhis letter to Nate, Morningside Provost Dr. William C. Deeds wrote, “Thesuperioracademic record that you achieved during the 2016 fall semesterindicates that your mind was

quite receptive. I hope you continue to havea receptive mind and that you are able to avoidethose who are unreasoning andimpossible to educate.”

Deeds’remarks were framed by an apt quotation from essayist Agnes Repplier(1855-1950): “It is as impossible to withhold education from thereceptive mind, as it isimpossible to force it upon the unreasoning.” CongratulationsNate! Everyone at LCHS isproud of you.

Observe Traffic Laws AroundLCHS. If you are dropping off your student on Custer, please keep the following in mind. 1) Pull all the way forward in the drop-off lane, 2) Studentsshould be ready to exit their vehicles when the car is stopped. (this is not time to sit and talkabout what is for dinner or finish homework), 3) All students should exit the vehicle on thecurb side, 4) If there is a parent that has to get out of the car to help a student with items inthe vehicle, this is not that lane. The student parking lot would be a better location to drop-off, 5)No U-Turns, 6) No jaywalking. (Drivers, don’t promote jaywalking by picking up ordropping off passengers from thecurbside opposite the LCHS property). 7)Yield topedestrians in crosswalks. These and other traffic laws are too-frequently ignored latelyduring pickup and drop-offs. For the safety of our students, please adhere to local trafficlaws and to our pickup and drop-off guidance. Please CLICK HERE to view it.If time is required for anything longer then to just drop-off a student, consider droppingstudents off in the student parking lot. Particularly if there is a bike, musical instrument orlarge student project that is being unloaded. This location would also be good for beginningdrivers with permits that need to change places with their parent after they get dropped off.
