From Bob Schaffer, LCHS Principal and CaseyChurchill, LCS Principal

One Grand JourneyBy Bob Schaffer, LCHS Principal Last Friday’s Torch Trek was one of our best ever, andI am grateful for the members of the senior class andstudent leaders of Domus Gratitudinis for organizing it,conducting it, and setting a glorious stage forwelcoming the new LCHS 7th graders to their newschool. Speaking of our seniors: Congratulations to Liberty’sClass of 2018 upon achieving a sky-high composite

SAT scores – the second-highest in Colorado! Earningcollege-readiness test scores that consistently placeour seniors among the top in the state is a sustainedhistoric record and a huge distinction that openscollege doors for all of Liberty’s students. With so many successes to celebrate around Liberty,it’s easy to underappreciate the magnitude of Liberty’sSAT accomplishment. And, while the incoming seniorsdeserve the heft of credit for the yeoman’s work they’vedone preparing themselves for college success, theseseniors would be the first to credit their parents andteachers going all the way back to kindergarten. The mighty Class of 2018 is setting the tone for theentire high school and junior high. They’ve come upwith a class motto intended to inspire all students, staffand parents alike: VIIS DIVERSIS VNVM ITER – From Separate Paths, OneJourney. Student leaders have already posted these words in every classroom andthroughout the school. It’s more than just a nice motto. Liberty scholars have established solid credibility to makesuch a motto bigger than mere words. Starting off the 2017-18 school year, for the eighthyear in a row, with top-tier college-readiness scores, is the perfect context for an ambitiousand festive year of learning. We have a few new instructors, and big plans for the year on which I’ll elaborate in thissame spot in subsequent newsletters. But for today, the big news is all about our fabulousstudents returning to school for another year of hard work and academic success. Oh,they’ll have a ton of fun, too. It was a real privilege to be at the front door this morning greeting Liberty students as theycame back to school. They’re enthusiastic, joyful, optimistic and ready to build a spectacularfuture, indeed. Thank you for choosing to educate your kids at Liberty Common School and for supportingthis thriving, innovative, and dynamic revolution in public education. The entire staff and I areblessed and honored by your trust, your confidence, your partnership, and most of all, byyour children.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back to Liberty Common School! I hopeeveryone has a relaxing summer recharging for the newyear. We are so excited to have kids back in their seatsready to learn. This is going to be a great year. Theteachers have been working hard to prepare for thecoming year this last week and I am happy to say, “Weare READY!”.

During the week of August 14th the Administrative teamconducted new staff training. This week was packed fullof Liberty Philosophy and conversations about thebenefits of Core Knowledge. We feel confident that ournew staff will hit the ground running this week. Libertydoes an amazing job hiring the best teachers and I look forward to coaching our staff here atLiberty over the coming years to help them be the best they can be.

During the week of August 21st was returning staff joined us for more professionaldevelopment. This week was focused on school wide goal setting and calibrating thecurriculum we teach. There have been a lot of changes over the years from expanding thehigh school, to different statewide tests, to changes on the state standards, and change over

in staffing. Now is the time to take a deeper look at all the skills and content taught and makesure we are teaching everything with fidelity. Each year the staff play a big part in these yearlong goals and assisting in any instructional improvements that need to be made. Theirexpertise and unwavering commitment to make Liberty the best school is crystal clear.

This year, we invited Cami from Quantum Learning to our school. We spent Tuesday andWednesday participating in this training. Quantum training is professional developmentdesigned to coach teachers on making lessons engaging and how to improve in classroommanagement. This year was level 2 of a 3 level professional development. We are excited tocomplete level 3 next year. Ask any teacher about the day and they can fill you in on theengaging 2 day workshop to sharpen their teaching skills.

Finally, we thank you! As parents we appreciate your overwhelming support. Thanks to allthat attended the Back to School Social last Thursday. It was great seeing everyone in thegym. The noise level and energy in the gym was a great indicator that there are a lot ofexcited kids and parents. Please remember that our Back to School night takes placetomorrow evening at 6:30 pm in the gymnasium. We all look forward to spending timemeeting with you and going over curriculum maps and general school wide and classroomprocedures. We hope you can all make it.

Thank you for your support over the summer encouraging your children to completesummer packets. As an agency education, we believe it is the right and responsibility ofparents to direct the education and upbringing of their children. Your guidance and supportin encouraging and helping your children with the completion of these summer academics isa great example of our philosophy in action. We are here to assist you in your children’seducation. Please know that our doors are always open throughout the year.

It is great to see everyone back. We are all looking forward to another great school year!

It will be held this Friday, September 1st, from 6-9pm in the LCHSGreat Hall. This is a traditional back-to-school ice-breaker where new and returning studentscan get to know one another. Tickets cost $5, and the standard Dance Dress Code rulesapply (see below). Guests are not allowed.

Students interested in planning events, runningmeetings, and taking on roles of responsibility throughout the school year will be able topick up application packets directly from their Order Deans to begin this process. 9th and10th-grade students will have a similar opportunity within their Houses. Each House elects a9th-grade and a 10th-grade representative to assist their House Captains in variousleadership duties throughout the school year. Students interested in these roles shouldspeak with their House Deans to get more information.

Observe Traffic Laws Around LCHS. If you are dropping off your student on Custer, please keep the following in mind.

1. Pull all the way forward in the drop-off lane,2. Students should be ready to exit their vehicles when the car is stopped. (this is not

time to sit and talk about what is for dinner or finish homework),3. All students should exit the vehicle on the curb side,4. If there is a parent that has to get out of the car to help a student with items in the

vehicle, this is not that lane. The student parking lot would be a better location to drop-off,

5. No U-Turns,6. No jaywalking. (Drivers, don’t promote jaywalking by picking up or dropping off

passengers from the curbside opposite the LCHS property).7. Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

These and other traffic laws are too-frequently ignored during pickup and drop-offs. For thesafety of our students, please adhere to local traffic laws and to our pickup and drop-offguidance. Please CLICK HERE to view it.

If time is required for anything longer than to just drop-off a student, consider droppingstudents off in the student parking lot (northeast corner of the school). Particularly if there isa bike, musical instrument or large student project that is being unloaded. This locationwould also be good for beginning drivers with permits that need to change places with theirparent after they get dropped off.

9th-Hour Clubs/Extra Help. At the end of every day, there is a 30-minute period from 2:45to 3:15 PM dedicated for students to receive extra help from teachers and/or to participate inacademic extracurricular activities (click here to see the schedule). Students may choosewhich club or extra-help session they would like to attend each day. Some clubs require anextra out-of-school commitment, but others are offered on a drop-in basis. Students whoare not in good academic standing (one or more grades below 70%, or at a teacher'sdiscretion) are required to attend 9th-hour extra-help sessions, and will need to submitweekly reports of their 9th-period attendance to Assistant Principal Lovely. Students leavingearly must be off the premises by 2:50 PM. They may not loiter anywhere in theneighborhood, in cars, or on the school property. Students in good academic standing whochoose to leave at 2:45 PM may not return to LCHS to reenter the school or obtain rides.Students that act inappropriately while departing early will forfeit this privilege. All studentsmust be out of the school building by 3:30 PM at the end of the school day unless they areparticipating in an adult-sponsored activity.

Skiving Defined. Liberty's ninth-hour options are a great opportunity for students to getextra help in their studies. Students falling behind in their grades may be required by theirinstructors to attend 9th-hour study clubs, or zero-hour (morning) study sessions. Suchstudents who are required to attend, but fail to show up for these sessions will be given aconduct violation. The proper term for skipping these supplemental study sessions isskiving. If you see this new category in a homeward violation notice, it means your studenthas skipped something he or she was required to attend at school. "Skiving" also applies tofailures to show up for lunchtime ransom duty and detentions.

Academic Guidance

Stoltzfus, Kazy At LCS. The head of our elementary Academic Support Team, one monthago, resigned. Two other elementary AST instructors moved on as well over thesummer. These situations have been addressed by moving LCHS’s Academic Dean Mrs.Sandy Stoltzfus and LCHS’s AST support specialist Mr. Matt Kazy to the elementaryschool. Their duties now include sustaining, managing, and improving our elementaryschool’s AST effectiveness. This will entail strengthening coordination of the school’saligned k-12 AST goals, and more tightly harmonizing the school’s AST philosophy, generalpractices, and caseload management. Mrs. Stoltzfus’ new title is Elementary AssistantPrincipal. She has assumed a few other administrative duties at the elementary school, too. Mr. Kazy’s new title is Elementary AST Coordinator. The position of LCHS Academic Dean will stand vacant for approximately the next tenmonths. In the meantime, duties of the LCHS Academic Dean have been “farmed out” to ahandful of other professionals in the school. This temporary strategy takes into account thelonger view of the school’s needs and acknowledges the crucial importance of this positionand appointing the absolute best professional to it. Ongoing information about affectedadministrative functions (scheduling, registrations, college planning, academic support, etc.,)will be communicated here at this space in subsequent Monday Notes newsletters.

Schedule Changes. CLICK HERE to review the Schedule Change Policy.Students wishing to request a schedule change should complete a Schedule ChangeRequest Form. Classical Manners for the Modern Youth

From the 1934 high-schooltextbook "Good Manners" used in"Household Science" class of thatday:

“Rule No. 20 The Teaspoon. Hold aspoon in the right hand with the thumb andforefinger. Rest the handle on the secondfinger, with the end of the spoonexposed. Never turn a spoon over in yourmouth. Eat from the side of thespoon. Keep your elbows close to your

side. Approach your mouth from the side rather than from directly in front of you.

"Take just enough on your spoon for one bite. Take all the bite at once. Have youever seen some one eat a spoonful of ice cream as if it were an all-daysucker? When food has entered your mouth, you must keep it there.

"In using a soup spoon, dip away from you, and drink the soup from the near side ofthe spoon. Leave the spoon in the soup plate when finished. A thin soup served in abouillon cup with two handles may be drunk from the cup. The bouillon spoon is lefton the saucer beside the cup.”
