Donating to good causes is hard. Nonetheless, it’s somethingAmericans do more generously than nearly anywhere else onthe planet.

For example, ticket sales for tonight’s first-ever Liberty CommonSunset Soirée indicate the gathering will be a well-attended, andfestive success. Yet, donating for the excellent cause isn’tcheap.

Liberty’s parent-led Board of Directors is indeed sensitiveto this, and has launched efforts intended to meet allLiberty families at their donation-making comfort point inhopes of enabling everyone to be a regular, annualschool donor. So, if you’re unable to attend tonight’sSoirée, trust me, there are more opportunities to come.

This week, coincidentally, we received an update from theAmazonSmile program letting us know the school received$380 so far this year thanks to Liberty parentsdesignating our school as their favored charity whenmaking an Amazon purchase. The program claims, overtime, to have generated $125 million for all charities.

Of that, Liberty’s grand total comes to $1,303. Boostingthat figure literally costs you nothing. A few simplekeystrokes will direct a few more nickels, dimes, or quarters to our school with your nextAmazon purchase.

Please read further down in this newsletter for instructions on how you can donate in thiseffortless way, too. It’s quite easy, and it really adds up.

What Every Liberty Parent Should KnowCharacter Education in the Discipline ProcessBy: Torgun Lovely, LCHS Principal

Kids make mistakes. When juvenile mistakes occur here at Liberty,we view them as valuable learning opportunities – occasions forlovingly asserting our character-education objectives when they aremost in need.

As a longtime educator, I am convinced the approaches we havedeveloped over the years are among the best I have everencountered, mainly because they give students the greatest chance to truly learn fromtheir mistakes. We assist them in developing a moral compass pointing...(CLICK HEREto continue reading).

Classical Manners For The Modern Youth

From the 1934 high-school textbook"Good Manners" used in "HouseholdScience" class of that day:

“Rule No. 66 Be Considerate (continued).Never forget to use the proper title before thename of one who has earned as a title; as, 'Dr.Jones,' 'Professor North.'

"A minister is spoken to as 'Mr. Brown' (or, 'Dr.Brown,' as he has the title); but his letters are

addressed 'Reverend'; as, 'Rev. Thomas D. Brown'; or, 'Reverend M.J. Fulton.'Always include either the given name or initials with the title; do not use the form'Rev. Anderson.' On the street, and in all public places, speak without raising your voice. Beespecially careful of calling out a first name. Often a stranger overhears you, anduses the name in a familiar way."

Alumni Update From Allison Salehi (LCHS Classof ’17) now attending University of NorthernColorado

College is “easier than I thought it was going to be,” for University of Northern Coloradosophomore Allison Salehi. A 2017 LCHS graduate, Allison remembers being intimidatedabout the transition from high school to college. “Everyone scares you about how hardcollege will be,” she said on a recent visit to her alma mater, “but it’s not as hard as Ithought.” Allison changed her major recently from elementary education to Sports & ExerciseScience, and loves an anatomy class she’s taking this semester. “It’s really interesting, and I enjoy it,” she said. “It builds off of Mrs. Karr’s anatomy class that I took atLiberty.” A former star of the LCHS volleyball court, Allison has always loved sports andexercise. “Switching to a major where you get to learn about the things you enjoy ismotivating to me,” she said. Allison credits the LCHS workload and rigor for her preparation for success incollege. “The homework at Liberty was hard, but it’s made college work much easier,”she said. “Lots of people struggle with that in college, but Liberty prepared us well forstudying, time management, and knowing how to read a book.” “Do your homework,” Allison advises current Liberty students. “That really prepares youfor college. It helps you to be your own student, and not having to rely on everyoneelse. Getting your work done in high school gives you better grades to get into a goodcollege,” she said. Allison also advises college-bound students to not be afraid of changing majors once incollege. “I was really scared to change majors in college,” she said. “But don’t be afraidto pursue a different field or career if you’re going to like it more – even if it takes moretime to graduate. It’s worth it.” Allison also recommends getting active in intramural sports as a good way to continuehigh-school athletic interests on a college campus. Without hesitation, Allison said, “Goto the gym!” Allison is still unsure what her eventual job goals will be, but after only three fullsemesters in college, she’s got plenty of time. With college graduation still several

AP And Concurrent-Enrollment Credits. One of the advantages of taking AP examsand concurrent-enrollment courses atLCHS is the possibility to transfer credit toyour choice college or university. It cansometimes lessen the amount of time youspend in college and may also impact youroverall college cost. Unfortunately, therecan also be some barriers, as not allcolleges and universities will award

transferred credit. Many also require a minimum score on AP tests in order to receivecredit. It’s very important to take the time to do your research early to know if the creditsyou are considering will in fact transfer to a potential college. Here are a few websites tohelp you determine what scores are necessary to receive credit:

Stanford- CLICK HERE.

Seniors will have a mandatory senior check-out meeting on May 13 during 9th hour.Seniors will hear about the checkout process that will also include how to requesttranscripts for their concurrent enrollment credit. (AP, CU Succeed, CCU Transcripts forthese credits do not need to be requested until the students knows what colleges theyare attending and have completed all AP exams).

Preparing For The Tests: ACT and SAT. As high-school juniors prepare for the stateSAT on April 9th at LCHS, it's import to keep in mind the ACT is another college-readiness test that is available. All colleges and universities accept both the ACT and theSAT. Some students might score higher on one test over the other, so it's good to

consider taking each one at least once then decide which test is a better fit before takingthe test again. The focus of the test is for both admissions, and scholarshipconsiderations. State Testing. It is that time of year for the followingstandardized tests to be administered at the upperschool:

CMAS math & English assessments (7th – 8thgrades)CMAS social studies assessments (7th grade) CMAS science assessments (8th, & 11th grades)PSAT exams (9th-10th grades)SAT exam (11th grade)

Given this advanced notice of these tests, please plan student appointments andschedules accordingly. When students are absent during testing, it creates a burden onthe staff to administer make-up exams for individual students. We ask for yourconsideration in this matter when making daytime appointments. The testing schedule can be viewed by clicking here .

These tests have value. The school relies on the results of these and other tests whenevaluating our curricula or programs.

Standardized testing is a state-initiated function of public education, as its goal isto provide objective insight into a student’s intellectual and academic aptitudecompared to other Colorado students. As a common benchmark, colleges rely onthis information for both undergraduate and graduate admissions. Professionalorganizations rely on such tests to determine a candidate’s knowledge in a field ofstudy (bar exam, actuarial tests, professional engineering exams, architectureexams, etc.). Developing test-taking skills can be helpful as students age andmature. These tests are also the primary way parents have to compare schoolsobjectively. While test scores (high or low) are not the only means to compareschools, they are by far the most prolific and publicly available means to do so. Weare proud of the academic accomplishments of our students. To put accurateresults on public display is an acceptable practice. Our character-education program highlights the foundation stones ofresponsibility, cooperation, and citizenship in the elementary school and thecapstone virtues of prudence, fortitude, and justice in the high school. Askingstudents to do their best when faced with a standardized test enables them todisplay these virtues in a meaningful way. Their lives will likely contain many suchchallenges. Teaching students, while they are young, to do their best, wheneverthe opportunity presents itself, will help set them apart from their less-motivatedpeers.
