Liberal Policy

Protecting South Australia’s marine life is important.

South Australians have always cherished our diverse marine environment and are passionateadvocates for sustainability. Tat’s why over a decade ago the South Australian Liberal Party proudlyproposed to create state marine parks to carefully manage our marine environment.

We recognise the importance of preserving biodiversity and identifying the threats and challengesfacing our precious state waters. We believe however that the current approach by the WeatherillLabor Government to the marine park management plans is awed.

Te proposed Sanctuary (No ake) Zones will have a devastating effect on a range of sectors vitalto the state’s economy. Regional communities, the tourism industry and both recreational andcommercial shers will suffer under Labor’s proposal. Te zones are damaging and are not supportedby scientic evidence.

Whilst the Liberal Party supports the creation of marine parks, we believe vital sectors of our state’seconomy must not be harmed. If elected, a Marshall Liberal Government will take a sensibleapproach to marine parks that protects regional communities, exports, jobs and the marineenvironment.

Liberal Policy

Te South Australian Liberals:

• Support marine parks but are not in favour of the current Sanctuary (No ake) Zoneboundaries proposed by the Government.

• Do not support the Government’s process for creating the current Sanctuary (No ake)Zones. Te SA Liberals’ process would follow a ‘threats based determination’ of anyprotection zone as per the COAG National Representative System of Marine Protected

Areas.

• Will continue working with the commercial and recreational shing sectors, as well asrepresentatives from a range of regional communities to keep the pressure on theGovernment ahead of any nal decision regarding Sanctuary Zones.

• Remain committed to protecting the marine environment through the aquatic reserveprovisions in the Fisheries Management Act 2007.

• Call on the Minister to wait for the nal report from the Legislative Council’s SelectCommittee into Marine Parks before making the ultimate decision.

• Would allow PIRSA to continue their management of shing in the state rather than turningthe responsibility over to DEWNR, if elected to government in 2014.

• Commit to a review of the marine park management plans and zone classications within thestate’s nineteen marine parks. Tis review will make specic reference to Marine Park LocalAdvisory Group and regional action group proposals to government.
