PCM 80 Quick Reference Guide
Basic Operation

The PCM 80 has 5 basic modes of operation, selected by pressing: Program Banks, Register Banks, Edit, Control or Tempo
Program Banksand Register Banks
Press Program Banks tocycle through 4 banks of 50presets. Press RegisterBanks to access an internalbank of 50 registers (orPCMCIA card banks) whereyou can store modified ver-sions of the factory-loadedpresets.
Each set of PCM 80 controlsis organized into a matrix ofas many as 10 rows and 10columns.
Simultaneously press Upand Down to return to 0.0.

SELECT moves youhorizontally acrossthe matrix.
Your current matrix location is shown in thelower left of the display. A P, an R or a Cpreceding the number indicates you are in aProgram, Register or Card Bank. If there is nonumber shown here, you are in Go mode.(See Edit.)
Up and Downmove youverticallythrough therows of thematrix.
In Edit, Control or Tempo mode, a indicates the presence of multiple param-eters within a single matrix location. PressLoad/ to cycle through all of the param-eters; simultaneously press Load/ witheither Up or Down to backstep.
Edit
Press Edit to access allavailable parameters for thecurrently running effect. TurnADJUST to alter the value ofany displayed parameter.
Control
Press Control to access sys-tem parameters, MIDI con-trols, and global control ofparameters such as Mix,Tempo, and Bypass type.
Tempo
Press Tempo to set tempo-related values that affect thedelay time and LFO rate pa-rameters of the currentlyrunning effect.
In Edit, Control or Tempo mode, ADJUST scrollsthrough the range of available settings for the displayedcontrol . In Program Banks and Register Banks mode,ADJUST is patched to one or more effect parameters.
To set PCM 80 tempo rate,press Tempo. Use SELECTand Up and Down to locatematrix position 0.0. Turn AD-JUST to select any TempoRate from 40-400 BPM.
Any PCM 80 delay param-eter (as many as 10 in someeffects) and any time-basedmodulator can be individu-ally assigned an absolutetime or tempo value.
You can set delay times inmilliseconds, or in a ratio ofechoes/beats which arelinked to tempo. When youchange tempo, the delaytimes will change to main-tain the same rhythm at thenew tempo.
Note: You can set and display delay values in units of time, orwith tempo values. Whenever a delay value is displayed in Editmode, press Up and Tempo simultaneously to toggle these twooptions.
The PCM 80 offers an exten-sive set of informative dis-play messages which can beactivated from the frontpanel. If you want to knowmore about the function of aparticular button withoutactually executing any ac-tion press and hold thebutton down. While you areholding down the button, anexplanatory message willappear on the display.
Or, press Tap twice inrhythm to establish thetempo rate you want. Tap isalways active, allowing youto change tempo on the fly.

Simultaneously press theBanks button with either Upor Down to backstepthrough the banks.
Turn SELECT to view all ofthe effects in the selectedbank. A in front of an effectname indicates that the ef-fect is not loaded. Hold downeither Banks button to seethe name of the currentlyrunning effect.
Press Load/ to load anydisplayed effect.
ADJUST acts as a soft knobfor adjustment of one or morepatched effect parameters.

Press Store. The currentprogram name will appearwith a flashing cursor overthe first letter of the name.
Press Load/ to display thename currently assigned tothe ADJUST knob patch.Use the same procedure forentering a new name.
Press Load/ twice tomove the to the RegisterID number in the lower leftcorner of the display. UseADJUST or SELECT tochoose the register whereyou want the effect saved.
When the display shows theregister number you want,press Store. Press Store inresponse to the "Are yousure?" message to save yournew effect to the displayedregister location.
Note: The PCM 80 will not perform a store instruction if theMemory Protection option is on. To turn Memory Protection off,press Control. Use Up and Down and SELECT to locate matrixposition 1.5. Turn ADJUST to display Off.
In addition to these easy plug and play techniques, the PCM 80 provides extensivesystem control via front panel patching or MIDI. For complete details on these and otherfeatures, read the PCM 80 Owner's Manual.

Turn ADJUST to select a newcharacter. Press Up or Downto select a new type of char-acter (upper or lower case,numeric, symbolic, or blank).Turn SELECT to move thecursor to a new character.

Audition the Programs
The PCM 80 offers two levels of editing control: Go mode and Pro mode.
Turn SELECT to view theavailable parameters.
Go mode gives you access to a specific set of as many as 10parameters for each of the 200 presets. We have designedeach set of parameters to allow you to make changes to theeffect without losing the character of the sound.
In Go mode, press Edit toaccess the most useful pre-set parameters for the cur-rently running effect.
Pro mode gives you access to the full effect edit matrixwhenever you press Edit. The edit matrix contains all effectparameters, as well as Patching and Modulation controls.
Turn ADJUST to change thevalue of any displayed pa-rameter.The PCM 80 is shipped in Go mode. To change the Edit mode,
press Control, use SELECT and Up and Down to locatematrix position 1.0. Turn ADJUST to select Go or Pro.
Edit
Press Bypass to mute theinput signal. A Bypass Modeparameter at Control mode1.3 allows you to select inputmuting, output muting, inputand output muting, or bypassas alternatives. You can alsoassign the bypass function toan external controller.
When you turn ADJUST, orperform any other param-eter edits, the front panelCompare light will go on toindicate that the programhas been modified since itwas last stored. Press Com-pare to hear the uneditedversion. Press again to re-turn to your edited program.
Bypass
CompareEach preset has one or moreparameters patched to theADJUST knob.
Turn ADJUST to display thename and the current valueof the patch.
Continue turning ADJUST tochange the value of the patchalong its entire range. Thescreen will return to its nor-mal display when you stopturning ADJUST.
