On 27 April 2012, the Secretary of the Army John McHugh announced the activation of the 7th Infantry Division headquarters by 1 October 2012, at JBLM. The 7th Infantry Division’s approximately 250 personnel will provide oversight for personnel, equipment, training and readiness of three Stryker brigades, 16th Combat Aviation Brigade and 17th Fires Brigade — totaling more than 17,000 soldiers. It had been more than 20 years since the last division headquarters, the 9th Infantry Division (Motorized), was assigned to the installation.

National Siblings Day

Landscaping services are currently included in your rent. On your lawn service day, you will need to ensure that your lawn is free of toys and personal belongings so the mowers can cut your grass. You can have one large non moveable item in your yard such as a swing set or trampoline. Please see your District Office for Outdoor Poli-cies. The mowers will cut within two (2) feet of the item. You will be responsible to cut the grass under and the two (2) feet around the item. You may choose to maintain your own lawn if de-sired. Contact your Community Office for a sign to put in your window. If the home you live in has a fence either provided or installed by you, you are responsible for the maintenance of your yard. ***All flowerbeds adjacent to your home are your responsibility to maintain weed-free. Failure to maintain may result in fines.

Family housing areas is scheduled for water main flushing over the next three months. Reader boards will be placed in your area at the time of flushing. You may experience discoloration in your water, however it is tested regularly and continues to meet or exceed State and Federal Water Quality Standards. We understand the water is not appealing, but we assure you the water is safe.

We apologize for any inconvenience during this process. Re-member that flushing is done to maintain long-term water quality, public health and your safety. If you have any con-cerns please call DPW Customer Service at 967-3131.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: WHAT CAUSES DISCOLORED WATER?

A: Your discolored water is caused by sediments from the well and accumulate in large distribution pipes over time. The sediment is from small amounts of iron and minerals present in most drinking water. Rapid changes in water pressure or flow loosens iron and mineral deposits from inside the lines. Construction, power outages, pumps in wells turning on and off and opening or closing a fire hydrant or water valves are common causes of stirring up the sediment. Hydrants are commonly opened to flush a water pipe after repair, address a water quality/discoloration problem, or to exercise valves to ensure fire protection.

Q: WHY DOES THE WATER SYSTEM NEED TO BE ROUTINELY FLUSHED?

A: The water distribution system is a complex network of pipes and storage reservoirs where sediment deposits natu-rally accumulate over time. If not removed, these materials may cause water quality deterioration, taste and odor prob-lems, or discoloration of the water. Water may also stagnate in less used parts of the distribution system and can result in degraded water quality.

Q: WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER THE FLUSHING?

A: If you encounter discolored water, run cold water, allowing new water to work its way into your pipes. If it does not, open all faucets, outdoor hose bibs etc. and run a load of laundry with no clothes on the cold setting. In some cases, you may experience slight discoloration for a few hours. This discol-oration only affects the appearance of the water; it does not affect safety and usually not the taste.

Q: WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY WATER PRESSURE OR VOLUME SEEMS LOW AFTER FLUSHING?

A: Check your faucet and washer screens for trapped debris.

Q: IS IT OK TO DRINK SEDIMENT-LADEN OR DISCOL ORED WATER DURING TEMPORARY DISTURBANCE?

A: It is recommended that water users wait until the water has cleared before using it for potable purposes.

Q: WHAT CAN I DO IN PREPARATION TO MAKE LIFE EASIER FOR ME DURING THE FLUSHING PROCESS?

A: 1. Fill a couple jugs of drinking water and put them in your

refrigerator the day prior.2. Do all of your laundry the day prior to the flushing.3. Unhook any charcoal/media filters or any other aftermar-

ket plumbing fixtures you may have hooked up such as automatic coffee makers.

4. Use your toilets sparingly.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact DPW Customer Service at 967-3131.

Renovations:

• Our Carter Lake and Heartwood renovation projects are coming to a close at McChord. The project is winding down with the last home scheduled to come out of renovation on April 9th. The total number of homes renovated is 369.

• We are in the process of preparing communication for fu-ture renovation projects as well; including some Lewis Main neighborhoods. Project scopes have us renovating through the end of the current decade and beyond.

New Development:

• 2 years ago, 156 homes were demolished and along the same footprint we have been engaged in a project to build 156 re-placement homes. 118 brand new Stony Oak homes were de-livered by the end of 2015. An additional 8 per month have been completed in 2016; with the final 14 homes wrapping up between March-April of this year.

When it’s time to move out, keep in mind that you must completely vacate your home prior to signing out of the installation. We have a few simple requirements:1) You must visit your neighborhood office to complete a Notice to Vacate. At that time a pre-inspection appointment will be made. You will also schedule the date and time of your final inspection which is the date and time you will turn over keys and walk away from the home. 2) You must provide us with a valid forwarding address.

3) As required by your lease, you must leave your home in the same clean, undamaged and ready-to –rent condition as when you moved in, taking ordinary wear and tear into account. Ordinary wear and tear would include such things as traffic wear across the carpet, but not burns or stains.

When you vacate your home, any personal property left in your home will be considered abandoned and may be disposed of without liability to us, subject to applicable laws.If we incur costs for cleaning and or repairing your home or for removing trash or other items left behind after you move out, we will pass those costs through to you.
