The Level 25 Special Issues

Black-and-white photography...the original and purest form of photography. Whereas a color photograph may depict the reality of a subject, black-and-white depicts the soul of that subject and forces the viewer to look more deeply at the image he or she is seeing.

A special monochrome-only photography issue of Level 25 Artjournal will be published online in December of 2014.

Titled “Colorless 2014” this special edition will be the inaugural issue of an annual Level 25 Artjournal showcasing the fabulous works of photographers worldwide.

ALL submissions will be included in “Color-less 2014,” offering artists an excellent oppor-tunity to have your art seen by art fans, gallery curators and art show organizers around the globe.

Guided by intuition, a fusion of gesture and geometry flows out onto the canvas in my ab-stract paintings. Although I begin my work with a basic composition and color scheme, I yield to what is happening in the painting as it develops. A back-and-forth between spontaneity and intention characterizes my approach. A flu-id, visual movement is created as I glaze, draw and juxtapose transparent against opaque. The many layers of paint over line and texture leave intriguing traces of what came before. By fo-cusing on process and informed elaboration, each painting unfolds and evolves in its own way.

The inspiration for my abstractions is female imagery, which to me expresses strength and vulnerability, power, mystery, and creative potential. This imagery is everywhere, in the natural and human-made world, and is often overlooked. Nearly everything I see, especially in nature, urges me to explore more and more avenues in my work.

My installations provide the freedom to express myself politically and socially. The various media I employ afford a limitless lexicon that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers.

I always have a firm idea of what a piece will look like before I begin. As the work evolves, it may influence me toward a slightly different direction, but the final result is close to or exactly what I had envisioned.

I can’t talk about my art without mentioning music, which has been a profound influence in my life from the very beginning of my consciousness. Without it, I would not be alive; it is the hand in which my heart beats. For me, art and mu-sic are inextricably linked spiritual experiences.

My creations are my daughters, each with her own personality—wild, whimsi-cal, cunning, defiant, hopeful—but never, never indifferent.

Caroline Jane Harris, UK(3rd Place)

www.carolinejaneharris.com

Caroline Jane Harris explores the intricacies of nature through a labour inten-sive paper-cutting technique. She responds to visual phenomena in nature; the endless geometric patterns found in all levels of existence. Using photographs of tree formations as her starting point, Harris digitally manipulates her images through a pre-determined ‘action’ resulting in kaleidoscopic symmetry. Harris incorporates scanned tree rings; circular motifs referencing puddles, moons, irises, Petri-dishes and time.

The images are computer printed using pigment inks on archival paper then finally hand-cut and layered. The process is slow and obsessive, requiring con-centration, repetition and discipline. The hand allows for subtle distortions cre-ating a tension between technology and the artist’s hand. Harris’s unique pro-cess acts as a reverse reduction print in which the print comes first, followed by gradually cutting and building up layers, the final image slowly emerges whilst the paper is removed. The meditative quality of the work is reflected in Harris’s interest in artistic and devotional practices of Eastern Cultures.

Once layered, the two dimensional paper-cuts have an inherent sense of depth creating three-dimensional drawings, preserved between glass like fragile spec-imens. Plains of paper become infinite and abstract, as if viewed through a tele-scope or under a microscope.

Karolina Zglobicka, UK(1st Runner-up)

I am originally Polish but live and work in Manchester. My practice is about seeing painting as a balance between meaning and explanation, vision and gesture or word and unspoken thought. My paintings speak in ultimate foreign language combining my background, new reality I live in, and expressing everything that I miss in everyday transla-tion. Currently my main inspiration comes from the idea of collage. We see images and photos we like in newspa-pers, we collect them in our albums or sketchbooks, fit-ting them into new context. I look at my recent paintings the same way, trying to create parts and pieces that have to work together, motives that gets lost in the process of ad-justment,colors and brushstrokes that fight the imposed perspective. With every started piece I’m creating new real-ity that my painting has to exist in, with every started piece my paintings create my new reality that I’m trying to get into.

Sydney Weinzapfel, USA(2nd Runner-up)

I recently graduated from Ball State University with a degree in painting. However, I love all forms of art, especially print-making. A lot of my art is inspired by nature and the beautiful world I see around me. I hope to con-tinue on with school and receive my MFA soon, and continue making and studying art for the rest of my days.
