High Excellence exemplar for Geography 91243 2016 Total score 8

Q Grade score Annotation

E8 This script meets the standard required for Excellence as required by the Achievement Standard as:

- when applying skills, geographic conventions and presentation of information are to a high level of accuracy in both the map and graph, and

- a detailed understanding of the geographic concepts of interaction, change, and sustainability are demonstrated with the use of geographic terminology and insight.

Specific detail from the Assessment Schedule supporting this:

As required at a Merit level, the map in part (a) (ii) uses appropriate geographic conventions to show the location and size of the cultural features of Betio Island with a “high level of accuracy” (although the location of the sports field has some inaccuracy).

The graph in part (c) uses geographic conventions required of a multiline graph (title, labelled axis, regular spacing of data, etc), and shows the relative growth of South Tarawa and the Rest of Kiribati plotted with a high level of accuracy. The population of South Tarawa is projected with a high level of accuracy also, to be 80 000 in 2025. A convention such as a dotted line is not used to distinguish between the projected population and past actual populations, but all other conventions are applied.

A thorough understanding of the concept of interaction is shown in part (b). The explanation clearly establishes how people have affected the environment by causing polar ice caps and sea level rise, and demonstrates insight as to how in turn this is affecting the people of Aboroa and the actions that they have had to take (building sea walls) to mitigate the impacts of this. The response also shows thorough understanding by using a variety or relevant supporting information throughout. The candidate has also shown insight as to the significance of sea level rise and coastal erosion as South Tarawa is particularly small and narrow. The actions of people affecting the environment by polluting the water lens resulting in sickness is also thoroughly explained, and insight is demonstrated, including recognising that this consequence is in conjunction with rising sea levels. Geographic terminology such as “process” and “water lens” are used within the context of the answer.

A thorough understanding of the concept of change is shown, explaining the unpredictable and undesirable changes resulting from economic development, and a range of supporting information is integrated. Insight is used in drawing in relevant information – such as the projected population – from previous parts of the question.

The future sustainability of population growth and the development South Tarawa is fully justified, with insight provided by considering actions to make the future more sustainable such as tighter regulations regarding migration, and the need for a similar or lower population.
