Letter from the Director-2013-02

February 2013 Dear mission partners, Ling and I went to Effie Berry’s memorial service on January 23 rd in Towcester north of our COCM mission centre in Milton Keynes. Effie was a missionary to China in the late 1940s. In 1953, she moved on to reach out and share the love of Christ to the people of Burma for many years. She finally retired back to England and spent many years as a mission mobiliser and encourager. Effie was the only child of her family. She never married and when she died at the age of 92, she left no other close relatives. Effie didn’t have much in her possession neither when she passed away. Among her possessions was a basketful of memorabilia that symbolised the life she lived. There was a Bible which Effie loved. For all her life, she was steadfast in living by the WORD of God and she preached faithfully what the Bible revealed. A pair of miniature shoes in the basket represented the thousands of miles Effie travelled from her home deep into unreached people’s territory. A small wooden carving of a praying hand symbolises Effie’s dependence on prayer as a source of strength to sustain her in times of toughness, loneli ness, and difficulty. Among her possessions was also a plaque written in Chinese saying “Mister, we want to meet Jesus”. This must be a plaque that she received from people she touched and has been a blessing to. Through her life testimonies she has helped countless numbers of sick orphans in her hospital practices in Nan Ning China while she was a mission ary there. Even after she returned to the UK she has been a blessing to many Chinese friends residing in the UK, among them are COCM missionaries. We are indebted to Effie and the missionaries who went ahead of us and shared their lives with us. There were also a couple of pictures Effie saved depicting the normal lives of the peas antry in Burma. It is evident that those memories of people living in Burma were deeply engrained in Effie’s life… Such is the life of a missionary. Effie was called when she was young to follow Jesus. She never married, had few possessions and was left only the memories of the roads she travelled; long and winding but full of adventure and the fragrance of Jesus Christ. “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news…” (Isaiah 52:7) Ling and I were very touched when we participated in this small but meaningful memorial service for Effie. It re minded us that a life of following Jesus doesn’t mean that we will have much treasure on earth but the life will be adventurous, full of meaning and a blessing to many. Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matthew 6: 1920) I am thankful that the Lord has called upon a dedicated group of young people in our midst, some of them has just dedicated their lives to full time service, some are getting ready to enter into seminary to be equipped and to con firm the call to full time service, and still a few others are taking their time to reflect and considering their response to God’s call to full time service. Each and every one of them will have to consider the cost of following Jesus. They are facing lots of challenges ahead. I pray the God who called upon Effie Berry in the generation ahead with the Spirit to sustain her to serve faithfully, will also call those He desires in this generation to serve. Please pray that God’s leading and protection be with them all their lives so that they will have the dedication, steadfastness and the strength to follow Jesus as Effie Berry did. Effie’s story continues… Serving together in Christ, Rev. Henry Lu General Director

February  2013    Dear  mission  partners,    Ling  and  I  went  to  Effie  Berry’s  memorial  service  on  January  23rd  in  Towcester  north  of  our  COCM  mission  centre  in  Milton  Keynes. A  small  wooden  carving  of  a  praying  hand  symbolises  Effie’s  dependence  on  prayer  as  a  source  of  strength  to  sustain  her  in  times  of  toughness,  loneli-‐ness,  and  difficulty.    Among  her  possessions  was  also  a  plaque  written  in  Chinese  saying  “Mister,  we  want  to  meet  Jesus”.  This  must  be  a  plaque  that  she  received  from  people  she  touched  and  has  been  a  blessing  to.  Through  her  life  testimonies  she  has  helped  countless  numbers  of  sick  orphans  in  her  hospital  practices  in  Nan  Ning  China  while  she  was  a  mission-‐ary  there. There  were  also  a  couple  of  pictures  Effie  saved  depicting  the  normal  lives  of  the  peas-‐antry  in  Burma. It   re-‐minded  us  that  a  life  of  following  Jesus  doesn’t  mean  that  we  will  have  much  treasure  on  earth  but  the  life  will  be  adventurous,  full  of  meaning  and  a  blessing  to  many.  Jesus  said,  “Do  not  store  up  for  yourselves  treasures  on  earth,  where  moths  and  vermin  destroy,  and  where  thieves  break   in  and  steal.  But  store  up   for  yourselves   treasures   in  heaven,  where  moths  and  vermin  do  not  destroy,  and  where  thieves  do  not  break  in  and  steal.”  (Matthew  6:  19-‐20)    I  am  thankful  that  the  Lord  has  called  upon  a  dedicated  group  of  young  people  in  our  midst,  some  of  them  has  just  dedicated  their  lives  to  full  time  service,  some  are  getting  ready  to  enter  into  seminary  to  be  equipped  and  to  con-‐firm  the  call  to  full  time  service,  and  still  a  few  others  are  taking  their  time  to  reflect  and  considering  their  response  to  God’s  call  to  full  time  service.
