Information is essential for doing business, and only those who are able to react to it as quickly as possible are likely to succeed. The 25th anniversary edition of the DREMA International Trade Fair of Machines and Tools for the Wood and Furniture Industries and the simultaneously held FURNICA International Trade Fair of Components for Furniture Production offer a wonderful oppor-tunity to be at the very centre of the wood and furniture business. This year, these shows will be attended by nearly 900 companies representing almost all major brands in the world. Can you find a better and a more objective insight into the industry and the mar-ket? And if we add that one of the goals for most exhibitors is to showcase and test new products, we must clearly admit that partici-pating in the fair is the best time for any business activity. As organisers of this important event, we arrange all sorts of meet-ings and special expositions to create the best possible and the most effective platform for establishing business contacts and col-lecting market information. We hope that the events we organise will prove helpful when making decisions and will give a clue on how to effectively handle challenges brought about by the market turbulence. Clearly, one of the solutions is enhanced competitive-ness that results from the introduction of solutions that are more economic and improve the quality of finished products at the same time. These are main issues covered by accompanying events.DREMA and FURNICA are the most important events for the wood and furniture industries in the region of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. These trade fairs are attended by all leading associations and organisations. There will be plenty of meetings, talks, debates and discussion forums. The topics of energy saving strategy, EU funds, as well as the situation and the future of the in-dustries will be addressed at the 3rd Economic Forum of the Polish Wood and Furniture Industry Polwood 2009. We hope that such industry meetings will make your stay in Poznań even more fruit-ful, and this is what I wish you whole-heartedly.

The early second quarter is a period of particular importance in the calen-dar of professionals from the wood

and furniture industries, as the trade fairs or-ganised at that time in poznań create an op-portunity to learn about new products and market launches. on 35,000 square meters of exhibition area, almost 900 exhibitors and represented companies from 21 countries will showcase their current offerings. These will include over 150 new products and inter-national premieres*. a visit to poznań is also a good moment for professional talks and an exchange of experiences within a multina-tional group owing to the presence of world-renowned companies at the fair on one hand, and unique display spaces together with a compelling programme of trade fair events on the other.

Technologies within reach

dREMa 2009, celebrating its 25th anniversary, means the latest technological solutions that facilitate mechanisation and increase produc-tion profitability in small, medium and large

enterprises. Both demonstrations of live ma-chinery and the option of consulting profes-sionals present at the stands are factors that attract large numbers of visitors from poland and abroad who come to the poznań meet-ing. Its expert formula features a presentation unique on the European scale, namely the Live furniture factory. Located in pavilion 3a, fully operational technology lines will pro-duce custom design dining room furniture over the four trade fair days. This time, the organisers will show the ins and outs of solid wood processing using state-of-the-art ma-chines, tools and components (read more on page 7). The polish furniture factory, an event organised by members of the association of Manufacturers of Woodworking Machinery, devices and Tools droma, will also provide much valuable insight into technology. The Technical Skills Range will be a ‘must-attend’ for all professionals interested in surface fin-ishing. The event will present equipment for surface preparation and application of pro-tective coatings used in furniture production, including liquid paint applications (read more on page 23).

Unique inspiration for furniture manufacturers and designers

The International Trade fair of components for furniture production fURNIca 2009, to be held simultaneously, will inspire captivating designs in furniture collections. It will feature the charm of detail – colours of Relax exhibition, this year devoted to upholstery fabrics. Interesting pat-terns and attractive textures should give an

As President of the Eu-ropean Federation of Woodworking Machin-ery Manufacturers, it is my honour and pleasure to welcome all visitors to DREMA 2009, focused on wood processing, components and sup-plies for the wood and furniture industry. The offer of hundreds of exhibitors is differentiated: craftsmen can find small traditional machines to en-rich their work and make it more accurate. Medium and large companies can find the most sophisticated solutions the world market is offering to improve pro-duction quality and quantity. Poland is characterized by deep economic changes towards a quick growth in several production sectors which are going to improve the life standards of most people: at DREMA we find the market of woodworking machines, necessary to provide furniture and furniture complements to the rapidly evolving building industry for private homes, hotels, cinemas, theatres, social and tourist spots.Eumabois is a Federation, made up of 13 national As-sociations which in turn, represent 800 manufacturers of woodworking machinery, tools and components. The Federation promotes the European woodworking machinery industry and its development in the fields of economy, technology and science and fosters the knowledge and wider diffusion of the same through the promotion of exhibitions and conferences. Our com-panies manufacture technology for the production of furniture, doors and windows, floorings, bridges, roofs, carpentry, objects and complements both of solid wood and wood-based panels. Recent figures regarding the International supply show that 63.5% of the world export of stationary machinery is made by the European companies, followed by Taiwan with 8.4% and Japan with 6.3%. There’s no doubt that whenever you find even limited woodworking activity, there you will also find European woodworking equip-ment. European machines are the most appreciated and requested in the world thanks to their high technologi-cal level, versatility and long lasting features. I would like to invite you all to visit the fair and see with your own eyes the work we have done to bring technol-ogy to Poland, but also create chances of confrontation, exchange of opinions and efficient businessoriented reports between exhibitors and visitors. Eumabois takes the opportunity to thank the Organis-ers for the perfect organisation of the event and to wish you all a profitable edition of DREMA 2009.

The exhibition will be accom-panied by talks and lectures, given among oth-ers by Zuzanna Skalska, a trendwatcher from the dutch design agency VanBerlo Strategy + design and a lecturer at the faculty of Indus-trial design at the Technical University TU/e in Eindhoven. The lectures will focus on colour perception in design (read more on page 21).Trade fair visitors may be inspired by a special area co-organised by Egger where various ap-plications of cellular boards in mass furniture production will be showcased. The area will show the ergonomic features of the board, its application in combination with other materials and substances. apart from the presentation of various pieces of furniture made of cellular boards, the organisers recommend profession-al advice offered by experts on the spot .

Experts about the situation of the industry

This year’s show will be a chance to discuss the future of the wood and furniture industry. The most important issues will be closely examined by experts who participate in the 3rd Economic forum of the polish Wood and furniture Indus-try polwood 2009. during a debate organised by the Inwestor publishing House and the poznań International fair, the panelists will talk about the competitive advantage of poland as compared to other European Union countries. They will also address the issues of energy sav-ing and labour costs. The panelists will include: Tomasz Wójcik (State forests General director-ate), Norbert dowejko (Barlinek Inwestycje), Ludwik olczyk (Tartak olczyk), Krzysztof No-

wosadko (Stelmet Sa) and Jarosław Mikos (Sto-larka Sa). (read more on page 16).

Standard of business talks: top level

The organisers will ensure that dREMa and fUR-NIca exhibitors and visitors alike have a comfort-able stay at the poznań meeting. In pavilions, there will be specially marked Rest & Meet points for conducting talks in a friendly and truly relaxed atmosphere. What is more, admission will be free for professional visitors who register either on ar-rival at ticket offices or on-line; they will also re-ceive a free copy of the exhibitors’ catalogue.

DREMA and FURNICA: it is worth being here

poznań dREMa and fURNIca shows provide an interesting insight into the market and facili-tate business meetings. What proves this point is that all industry associations are there at the fairs, and the meeting of the Board of the Euro-pean federation of Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers EUMaBoIS is scheduled to take place during the fairs. Both major organisa-tions and entrepreneurs will try to look into the future from the angle of dREMa and fURNIca shows: the most important meeting in central and Eastern Europe and Southern Europe that provides insight into new technologies and current directions of economic development. What will they be like: we are about to find out very soon during the visit to poznań.

a special matchmaking programme has been created for dREMa and fURNIca ex-hibitors and visitors to help them plan their visit to the fairs more precisely. Hosted Buy-ers is a programme addressed to the larg-est buyers of woodworking and furniture products. Meetings with selected exhibitors can be arranged earlier by the visitors. The participants first specify the profile of com-panies they would like to contact and then receive a list of recommendations. during the fairs, MTp organises meetings that can be held both at the exhibitor’s stand and on the Business Meetings area. Thanks to prior arrangements, such meetings are more constructive and make it possible to use the time spent at the fairs more effectively.

UPoN ADMISSIoN

Registration desks and ticket offices are lo-cated at the entries to the fair grounds. pro-fessional visitors who will register on arrival at ticket offices or online will not pay for admis-sion. They will also receive a free copy of the catalogue of exhibitors and vouchers for free refreshments at Rest&Meet points. If you prefer not to register, you will be able to purchase a ticket for pLN 60 and receive a free copy of the catalogue, as well.

AT ThE FAIRS

In order to offer the most effective participation in the trade fairs to its exhibitors and visitors, the best and comfortable surroundings for business meetings, Rest & Meet points will be located on marked areas in exhibition pavilions. you will be able to hold meetings in favourable conditions and friendly atmosphere. catering points will offer free refreshments.

The exposition of machines and tools for the wood pro-cessing sector was held on MTK grounds for the second time. This edition boasted a 25% increase in the exhi-

bition area, as compared with the previous show, and the number of exhibitors amounting to 63.The show’s unquestionable asset was the comprehensive exposition offer, including simple manual tools and more complex equipment, such as machining units and turning machines. The organisers focused on variety and attractiveness by organising special events for the visitors. One of the most popular areas was the Island of New Products, Innovations and Technologies – a venue for debating such issues as energy consumption in spinning or the use of EU funds for woodworking investments. Additionally, the visitors had an opportunity to see a model furniture company at an exposition entitled: “My first 6X9 workshop” organised by CEHPOL. A competition under the

title: “Construct the Eiffel Tower and go to Paris” was a great opportunity to have fun and enjoy oneself. The winner of this morning contest constructed a 3-metre high tower of building blocks and won a trip to the capital of France. The turnout was great in Katowice. The exhibitors’ stands were visited by approx. 1,700 attendees on three trade fair days. They were mainly professionals from the woodwork-ing sector. Visitor registration (online or on arrival at ticket offices) introduced for the first time created an opportunity to hold business talks and exchange opinions among experts more comfortably. The upcoming DREMASILESIA-MEBELTECHEXPO fair will be held on 2-4 October 2009.

T his year’s Live Furniture Factory is an event, which shows a furniture production process from the

design, through the selection of technology and ma-chines to the final product. Apart from box furniture (a dining room cabinet), also frame furniture (a table and a chair) will be produced. The basic raw material used for this purpose will be solid wood.

technical preparationThis year’s event has a new feature – technical prepa-ration of production. A design office and a product development department have been set up on the dis-play platform. Both are supervised by Professor Jerzy Smardzewski from the Department of Furniture Design at the Poznań University of Life Sciences. In his opinion Research and development aim to quickly prepare detailed parameters for the design, structural and technological documentation in an integrated IT environment configured

to programme concurrently, analyse the static parameters, rigidity and strength of the furniture that is designed as virtual models, control the quality of prototypes using scanning technology, including checking how the geometry and strength of concept models compare with those of the prototypes. In many cases the work of a factory office is limited to the preparation of 2D drawings, while the R&D unit at the University is concerned with rapid prototyping, which is ideal to create personalized (discreet, customized) products, made to individual customer orders. Reverse engineering systems help to prepare a numerical (virtual) model on the basis of absolute measurements of a three-dimensional object, complete design documentation (CAD), control the manufacturing process using CNC machines (CAM) or permit the use of rapid prototyping. The design employs methodologies of shape measurement and cali-bration of 3D objects, and conversion of a point cloud to a format compatible with CAD/CAE/CAM systems. The event

features measurement and analysis of design errors for some of the furniture made. Virtual design and analysis of furniture structure, as well as the use of reverse en-gineering methodology, easily show that the designed furniture is safe.

form and functionThe staff of the Poznań University of Life Sciences, in consultation with MTP’s project coordinators, selected a furniture design, which combines the form based on modern design trends with ergonomics and the latest structural and technological solutions. It is the best de-sign of Przemysław Myszkowski, a senior student of Fur-niture Design at the Poznań University of Life Sciences. My work is a combination of chance and inspiration. I was looking for an item of utility furniture, which conforms to the current design trends and at the same time can be flex-ibly used, says P. Myszkowski.

Modern production from A to zLive furniture factory is a unique display of modern furniture production technologies – a place, where a furniture factory of the future and in operation can be admired.

Are we still going to be an attractive part-ner for foreign recipients of polish tim-ber products? How to prepare for the

forthcoming changes? How to survive the period of economic downturn? Where to look for sav-ings? The idea behind the 3rd Economic forum of the polish Wood and furniture Industry polwood 2009 will be to find answers to these questions.only once a year, managers of the largest en-terprises in the woodworking and furniture in-dustries in poland, directors of State forests, re-searchers, economists and policy makers meet in poznań to take part in the debate of the polwood Economic forum. a few hundred guests invited by the forum organisers all watch a matter-of-fact discussion among experts, supported with the latest research and analyses as well as case stud-ies. The choice of the most up-to-date, yet often difficult and controversial topics, as well as opin-ions expressed in the discussion tend to stir a lot of emotions. However, polwood does not serve to prove the point made by any party, to support any specific solutions or promote businesses op-erating in this market, but to fulfil a mission being a strive to develop the polish wood and furniture industries through identification of opportunities and threats that may be out there in the future, and to present various concepts to seize or miti-gate those, as appropriate. This year, polwood will be attended by 430 participants and, like in previ-ous editions, will comprise three parts. The speakers of panel I devoted to timber cost savings will include: Norbert dowejko (Barlinek Inwestycje), Tomasz Wójcik (State forests) or Jacek Kulis (Mondi Świecie). polwood 2009 experts will discuss the following: what the supply of raw ma-

terial in poland and all over the world will be, how its price will develop, how to streamline timber use, which legal solutions hamper cost competi-tiveness in terms of raw material, what solutions for raw material cost savings used in the world could be transferred to the polish wood and fur-niture industries.panel II will gather experts on energy cost saving. They will among others discuss the following: what are the energy costs generated by a wood-working company in poland, what technologies are conducive to energy savings in the wood and furniture industries, is wood waste a source of energy or a raw material for production, how the wood industry will benefit from the EU promotion of energy savings in construction. The experts will include Ludwik olczyk, who implemented solu-tions conducive to energy cost savings in his saw-mill and invested in a pellet production line. panel II will also include a presentation of a movie from a woodworking plant that is utilizing wind power. The topic of energy savings in window and door joinery will be discussed by Jarosław Mikos (Sto-larka S.a.). In panel III, polwood experts are go-ing to discuss changes in the profile of an ideal employee in the woodworking industry. panel III

experts will among others address the following: how much we can save on automated produc-tion, can you replace humans with robots in the woodworking industry, how much you can save on moving production to countries with cheaper labour force. It has already become a tradition that forum pres-ents a polwood award for the Investment of the year. The 2008 nominees include primary wood processing plants and furniture manufacturers, window and door joinery producers or manufac-turers of wood packaging, as well as representa-tives of the board and plywood sector. among the winners of previous editions of the contest there were Igvar Kamprad (Ikea) and Ludwik olc-zyk (Tartak olczyk). n

Are we still competitive?

More and more expensive timber and growing energy and labour costs: over the four years following the Poland’s accession to the european Union, the landscape of the Polish wood and furniture industries has indeed changed a lot.

16 NEWS DREMA • FURNICA

Poland is the 10th largest furniture manufacturer worldwide and 4th

largest furniture exporter, surpassed by Italy, China and Germany.

The furniture industry may fend off the most serious implications of the economic down-turn. It is all owing to constantly high exports to Western European countries as well as rea-sonable and comprehensive utilisation of EU funds. at the press conference of dREMa and fURNIca trade fairs, Marek adamowicz, di-rector of the office of the polish chamber of commerce for furniture Manufacturers, talked about the situation of the furniture indus-try and prospects for 2009. Summing up the last year, Marek adamowicz emphasized that keeping the sold production at the level of 25 billion pLN will signal dropping furniture pro-

duction by about 3% as compared with 2007. as the greatest threats for the furniture indus-try he mentioned shrinking export markets, the decline of residential housing construction in poland, steady wage pressure, credit crunch and problems with financial liquidity experi-enced by companies.Work effectiveness should be improved through plant restructuring, investments in new technolo-gies, machines and IT, says Marek adamowicz. If these steps are taken, and small and medium companies are flexible and adjust to chang-ing market situation, it will be possible to keep sales levels high in 2009. (M.W.)

MAREK ADAMOWICzdirector of the office of the Polish Chamber of Commerce for Furniture Manufacturers, thinks that furniture sales growth figures will be similar to last year’s.

The future of the woodworking industry

Timber for construction always in demandThis is the second time the “Wood in Construction” show has taken place at the International Construc-tion Fair BUDMA held on 20-23 January in Poznań. This year’s edition of the show was attended by 72 companies, including 20 from abroad.

T he exhibition located in one of the pavilions of the poznań International fair featured among

others wooden structures, finishing systems, a wide range of wooden houses, as well as timber materials, slats and beams often used in the construction industry. The Village of Wooden Houses, where some compelling examples of this type of architecture were showcased, was yet another highlight for all those interested in wood. The “Wood in construction” show is the only such event in poland where both products and semi-finished prod-ucts from timber used in construction are presented. This year, the exhibition space was attended by many carpenters, roofers and contractors, which proves its in-creasing popularity. among the visitors there were also architects planning to use wood in their designs. The following industry organisations have participated in the show: the polish Economic chamber of Wood In-dustry, Wood Based panels producers association of po-land, Wooden House association and the association of polish Wood floor Installers. (Jo) n

Wood industry is the 3rd largest branch of Poland’s economy, with a 9% share in sales value terms and employment level

of ca. 300,000

Df neWS: there are segments of the wood-working industry, such as sawmilling, which have been expanding a lot over the recent couple of years. Will this tendency continue?andrzej Górski: The sawmilling segment of the woodworking industry has experienced a rapid growth recently. It was very much needed, as most Polish saw-mills were lagging behind in terms of technology, and they had outdated machinery. Recent years have seen investments and business development. I believe this trend will continue, apart from periods of serious eco-nomic downturn. The lack of investments will clearly affect the competitiveness of Polish sawmills which will lose markets for timber.

Df neWS: What do you think the future of the Polish woodworking industry will be?a.G: The future of the Polish woodworking industry will hinge upon a number of factors. First of all, we need to know the answers to two fundamental questions: will the Polish woodworking industry have stable terms and conditions of timber supply from the State Forests that are conducive to competitiveness and profitability, and will the industry obtain funding for investments.Answering the first question, we can say today that the Polish Economic Chamber of Wood Industry together with other woodworking organisations, i.e. the Associa-tion of Polish Papermakers, Wood Based Panels Produc-ers Association of Poland, Polish National Committee of EPAL and Woodworking Club Association have com-

menced cooperation with the State Forests under the auspices of the Government in order to develop stable conditions of trade and cooperation between the wood industry and State Forests. These talks and agreements are tough, sometimes tense, but necessary, and all par-ticipants are aware of this. I hope they will eventually bring the very much awaited stabilisation and will be acceptable for both the recipient and the supplier and will be in line with competition regulations, the lat-ter pushed through by the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection. If such regulations are adopted, it will clearly contribute to the development of the wood-working industry in Poland. Unfortunately, we cannot provide a definitive answer to the question whether the industry will obtain relevant funds for investments. The woodworking sector is capital-intensive, and any invest-ments require a lot of financial effort from companies. What is crucial is the availability of investment loans or subsidies, e.g. EU funds. The industry is not able to make investments from their own funds only, and if access to the aforementioned resources is denied, it will hamper investments. The EU funds surely are an opportunity here. However, you need to overcome many bureaucratic hurdles in order to obtain funding, and most enterprises in the woodworking sector are small and medium com-panies that cannot rely on a fully-fledged legal or even accounting services. These companies are often discour-aged from applying for assistance due to the lack of relevant publicity and incomprehensible regulations. At present, there are not any good advisory companies on the market that could provide consulting to small wood-working companies on utilising EU funds. This is where the Polish Economic Chamber of Wood Industry should be more involved. The development direction of the Polish woodworking industry should be specialized production (this goes for large and medium companies) and niche production with small demand (for small companies). A majority of Polish companies are small and medium in size, they can introduce changes in production easily or redirect pro-duction very fast. However, what will be decisive for the future development of the industry is the price of raw material purchased from the State Forests. n

How to understand colours? Which colours and shades will be “fashionable” in the near future? To answer these questions, one has to follow and understand changes in the society that undergoes changes every year. This leads to changes in the so-called consumer trends, i.e. the tastes and desires of buyers. These transformations are determined by economy, politics, technology and the natural environment around us.The conclusions from the above influence our daily lifestyle that serves as a basis for foreseeing trends in the near future. Thus, companies that treat trends professionally (regular staff training, subscriptions of professional journals, cooperation with designers) are most often visible on the market because they translate the “lifestyle” (i.e. trends) into new products or services. Well translated trends strengthen the image of the company, its brand and product, thus entailing increased sales. It follows from my long-term professional experience that the majority of companies (not only in Poland), or rather people

responsible for developing, implementing and marketing new products do not know how to understand and, first of all, how to translate trends for the purposes of a given brand. It fre-quently happens that this translation (here in relation to colour trends) involves the application of a new “fashionable” colour to a product that has long been produced. As a result, the cho-sen colour is in line only with the desired colour label, but not its shade. And the shade is what determines if the product colours are trendy or passé.My talks will explain the difference between the definition of colour (the basic colour) and its perception and understanding by a modern consumer. I will focus on 13 colours. I will dis-cuss their definitions and show examples of the latest colour trends. The lectures will finish with short workshops to offer you a method to create a new strategy (for a company, brand, product etc.).Join me at the show!

Zuzanna Skalska

Colour has always accompanied the humankind. The difference is that colour perception was directly related to nature for our ancestors. The human skin colour depended on the climate. Pigments humans could find or obtain came from plants or minerals. Modern consumers do not differ at all from old tribes. It is just that the media, companies and shops, not the nature, provide colours to them. The choice is immense.

Zuzanna Skalska has monitored trends in various industries for over 10 years. Her clients include companies (ranging from small to large) and huge international corporations. She first worked for Philips Design in the corporate strategy department. Now she works for VanBerlo Strategy + Design, a Dutch design agency. She lectures at the Industrial Design Faculty of the Technical University TU/e in Eindhoven. For over 5 years, she has been the board member of the annual urban Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Additionally, she has held talks and workshops on trends for years (also in Poland).

The Charm of Detail 2009

Colour as the starting point

The upcoming charm of detail is a pre-sentation of trends in furniture uphol-stery. Unlike its previous edition, it will

be an impression-based exhibition full of openwork, very airy, using light effects. Its main elements (the light and the fabrics) will be combined with a motif of large lanterns. The charm of detail (in reference to last year’s idea of the pattern book) will showcase upholstery fabrics that will not hang loosely, as is usually the case at trade fair stands, but will be stretched as if on a piece of furniture. apart from the pattern book, the exhibition will fea-ture armchairs differing in the type of uphol-stery fabrics.all previous editions of the charm of detail shared one feature – they created a venue for

meetings and an opportunity to exchange opinions. The upcoming event will be ac-companied by many lectures and presenta-tions. Talks on the perception of colours will be given by Zuzanna Skalska, who announc-es her lectures this year in the following way: My presentation is related to the latest colour trends visible in various industries. The talks will deal with the perception, understanding and implementation of colours in brands by con-sumers and will end with a short workshop for the audience.according to Zuzanna Skalska, innovative ideas are created out of openness to various sources of inspiration, frequently beyond a given industry. Hence the idea of an all-en-compassing analysis of colour trends in the

furniture industry and beyond. during the presentation, the audience will learn about 13 colours, their definitions, cultural context and the perception of shades in the latest design. The charm of detail exhibition, organised annually, is very popular among furniture manufacturers participating in fURNIca. The concept of this year’s event and the topics to be tackled create yet another opportunity to find out more about current and future trends. Visit the charm of detail to gain the latest knowledge about design trends.

The Charm of Detail exhibition has accompanied the FURnICA trade fair since its very beginning. Its first edition was simply a display of new products offered by participating companies. However, the subsequent edition initiated a series of exhibitions that inspired designers and producers alike.

Conjured from Wood is a competition that proves that students of woodworking schools are young people who are not only well prepared to their future professions, but also true lovers of this renewable material, full of ideas and unlimited imagination. Inwestor Publishing House and Poznań International Fair, the organisers of this annual competition, give an oppor-tunity to young and talented students to present their skills and resourcefulness to a wide group of DREMA visi-tors. An exhibition of competition works is organised at Inwestor’s stand. It includes everyday use items that are usually made of raw materials other than wood. However, the students prove that the application of the renewable material, such as wood, in their production gives them unique appearance and often does not exclude their user values. Thus, the exhibition is a source of inspiration to people interested in innovations in industrial design. It also creates opportunities for the most resourceful de-signers to win valuable prices. The most original works are chosen by the competition

jury. The main prize for the winner is a voucher for the purchase of Metabo electric tools worth PLN 2,000. Ad-ditionally, the winner’s school will receive a machine – S500 P band saw endowed by SCM Group Polska Sp. z o.o. valued at PLN 17,000. Other students from the winner’s class will come to the fair (all expenses covered by the organisers) to witness the award ceremony. Additional prizes are prepared for authors of works with honourable mentions. These contestants will receive Metabo electric tools worth PLN 500 Additionally all schools participat-ing in the competition will get an annual subscription of Gazeta Przemysłu Drzewnego, Meblarstwo Komponenty i Technologie as well as Drewno Technika. It is quite telling that the competition will be held under the auspices of the Ministry of National Education. The competition sends an educational message. The contes-tants who conjure items from wood and wood derivatives learn independence, creativity and skills to conduct a production process – from the concept of design, through the selection of available technologies, up to product pro-

motion. The competition develops creative thinking both in the design and the production stage. n

Polish Furniture Factory During this year’s DreMa fair, members of the Droma association of Manu-facturers of Woodworking Machinery, Devices and tools will showcase a model furniture factory, displaying the capabilities of Polish manufactur-ers of woodworking machines and tools in terms of comprehensive tech-nological equipment solutions for small and medium companies from the wood and furniture sector.

T he furniture factory project is also expected to prove that if polish manufacturers act jointly, they can offer a rich variety of equip-

ment and technological lines, meeting the expectations of different customer groups. The polish furniture factory will be located in pavilion 5, in a specially assigned exhibition space next to the exposition shared by members

of the droma association. The furniture factory will occupy an exhibi-tion area of over 600 m2. Its final product will be a library shelving unit measuring 180 x 80 x 35 cm, with a bottom level and 4 shelves. all ele-ments will be made from pine wood, connected using finger joints in order to show how short wooden elements may be used for furniture production.Technological design of the furniture factory is expected to give insight into the technological process – from the stage of sawing dried timber up to the final shelf assembly, involving a number of intermediate techno-logical centres: gang saw centre, defect removal, providing length joints, four-side wood processing, providing width joints, polishing, mechanical processing, drilling, assembly. Moreover, wood waste management solu-tions will be presented at the gang saw centre, along with a demonstra-tion of devices for grinding tools used in the furniture factory. The entire project will involve a number of companies associated in droma, e.g.: oska, Goma, famad, Tech-fa-Miler, Safo, Jaroma, Gomad, Lakfam, Techmar, Gopol, Nadi, prochera, Tanel.Kurier drzewny magazine will be the key media partner of the event. n

Poland, thanks to extensive raw material resources and centuries-long develop-ment of wood processing industries is a

country where the forestry and woodworking sector is one of the main branches of national economy. further expansion of wood processing in poland will be conditional on the implementa-tion of cutting-edge technologies and equip-ment incorporating international advances in woodworking and wood refining technologies, and applications of wood-based materials. This, in turn, triggers industry demand for modern wood-working machines and equipment, which has an impact on polish mechanical engineering compa-nies. Initiatives launched in the sector are aimed at creating favourable conditions supporting the growth of innovation. The ability of polish enter-prises to quickly implement advanced techno-logical, technical and organisational solutions will be a major factor determining the competitive-ness of the polish wood processing machines and tools industry in the near future. Thanks to activi-ties undertaken by the droma association of Manufacturers of Woodworking Machinery, de-vices and Tools the sector has successfully main-tained its high status both in poland and abroad. one of the tasks of the droma association is to organise mutual exchange of information on new production technologies, management and ap-plication of systems of quality assurance, environ-mental protection and labour safety. In addition, the association supports its members in collect-ing, processing and sharing information. To this end, it cooperates with foreign manufacturers and organisations. another important role of the

association is the provision of advisory services concerning licence agreements, protection against unfair competition, regulations and stan-dards, and their adjustment to international re-quirements. The organisation is a very active or-ganiser of conferences, consulting sessions, meetings, shows, training trips, joint polish and foreign exhibitions and other forms of product promotion.Since 2006, droma has been a member of EUM-aBoIS the European federation of Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers which groups 13 na-tional associations representing major European manufacturers of woodworking machines and tools. The associations bring together nearly a thousand companies engaged in the manufac-turing of machines and accessories for the wood industry. The total share of all EUMaBoIS member companies in the international market exceeds 56 per cent. droma’s active participation in the initia-tives launched by EUMaBoIS offers an opportu-nity to influence decisions that shape the future of the woodworking machines and tools industry not only in Europe, but all over the world.

at present, the polish sector of woodwork-ing machines and tools offers a complete and comprehensive range of products for wood industry companies. The extensive assortment of machinery manufactured by Members of the association includes over 200 different types of woodworking machines and equipment, e.g. those designed specifically for the sawmilling industry, furniture-making companies, first-fix joinery factories, general-purpose wood pro-cessing plants and wood waste management. The most esteemed products on foreign mar-kets are conventional solid wood processing machines and tools.Through cooperative activities, polish manufac-turers belonging to the association are also able to design and deliver complete wood process-ing plants.during the forthcoming edition of dREMa, pol-ish manufacturers of woodworking machines and tools will display a model furniture factory incorporating polish technological and struc-tural solutions. The final product of the factory will be a pinewood bookshelf. n

Polish industry of woodworking machines, devices and tools

Poland’s tradition of constructing machines for wood processing goes back to the end of the 19th century. The majority of Polish enterprises specialised in the production of woodworking machines and tools have operated on the market for dozens of years. The Polish sector of wood processing machines, devices and tools thus has a long-established tradition, yet at the same time it relies on steady technical and technological progress.

DROMA Association of Manufac-turers of Woodworking Machinery,

Devices and Tools has a great contribution to the development of

the Polish engineering industry.

Df neWS: Could you, please, briefly describe Polish man-ufacturers of wood-based panels?Maria antoni Hikiert: Poland is one of European leaders in the production of wood-based panels. Taking into account all panel types, we rank second in Europe, after Germany. Depending on pro-cessing technology, wood-based panel factories can be classified into three basic groups. These include: manufacturing plants of plywood, wet process fibreboard and chipboard, MDF board and OSB, the latter defined as dry process boards. There are eight plywood manufactur-ing plants in Poland at the moment. They belong to seven owners. On account of limited raw material supply, the production volume of Polish plywood is rather small, however the product is of very good quality and varied in terms of assortment. Wet process fibreboard is manufactured in a total of five plants, two of them belonging to the Steico corporation. In this branch of wood-based panel manufactur-ing we are definitely the best in Europe. Dry process production is carried out at six manufacturing plants owned by four companies. Their production output largely satisfies the demand of the furniture-making industry.Df neWS: to what extent does their production output satisfy the needs of the Polish market? Does the quality correspond to european standards?M.a.H.: I strongly believe that the wood-based panels industry is capable of satisfying in 100 per cent the demand of the Polish market, where furniture makers account for 85 per cent of customers. What is more, it is still able to export substantial volumes. While it is true that not so long ago, when the overall market situation was exceptionally good, fibreboard was occasionally in short supply, the times are gone now. It should be noted that manufacturing plants keep on making investments and expanding their production capacity. The structure of demand on the market has been changing as well. Fibreboard manufactured in Poland meets all requirements set out in European standards. However, furniture made in Poland is not only sold on Eu-ropean markets but also exported to other continents. The USA has

recently introduced very stringent requirements for wood-based panels in terms of formaldehyde emissions. European standards will probably also be made more rigid in this respect. Polish manufac-turers of wood-based panels, who are among technologically most advanced enterprises worldwide, are certainly able to meet rigorous expectations in terms of technology, however stricter requirements entail higher costs. It is hard to predict whether, faced with rising prices of wood and energy, we will be able to keep up with foreign competition.Df neWS: How important are DreMa, fUrniCa fairs to Members of the association? What is the main motiva-tion behind the association’s participation in the fairs? M.a.H.: It is not the first time that the Wood-Based Panels Produc-ers Association of Poland is taking part in DREMA, FURNICA as part of the so-called Island of Associations. In our view, the creation of the Island is a very good idea and we hope that this kind of cooperation linking several branches of the wood industry will become closer. The joint exhibition stand organised by associations makes it possible to integrate the entire industry and challenge the still prevailing view that other manufacturers of wood-based panels are nothing but com-petitors. Obviously, the main goal of participating in the trade fair is to promote the industry and its products. Furthermore, fairs make it possible to gain valuable information about the expectations of our business partners, furniture manufacturers in particular. Trade fairs are a source of knowledge of the most important and the most inno-vative technologies and trends in the wood and furniture industries. Another important aspect of trade fairs is the opportunity to hold, within a short time, a number of business meetings that make it pos-sible to settle trading issues but also exchange views on topics which are of greatest importance for the industry, identify development trends and assess prospects for the future of the wood industry. Df neWS: thank you for all the information. We hope that the fair will be a successful and enjoyable experi-ence.

In the lead of manufactur-ers of wood-based panels

For the very first time in Poland, furniture manufacturers and readers of Meblar-stwo Komponenty i Technologie monthly will develop the Aces of Distribution ranking aimed at naming the best whole-salers who supply the furniture industry.

Manufacturers tend to rely on a couple of suppliers. Not all meet their expectations, but there are many who stand out posi-

tively because they provide a comprehensive offer, keep introducing new products from foreign mar-kets and have a perfect customer service and logistic system. When assessing specific components of their suppliers of semi-finished products or furniture accessories, furniture manufacturers are going to vote the best wholesalers who ensure good coop-eration in developing competitive advantage in the industry. The results of the aces of distribution competition will also form a compendium of knowledge for wholesalers themselves, who will learn about clients’ expectations as well as models and standards that are of utmost importance for them: timely deliveries, a wide range of products, quality service, methods of goods delivery or maybe attractive promotions? We will find out the winner at the final Gala at which the statuette of aces of distribution will be present-ed to the winning wholesaler; a special prize will also be presented to one of the voters. It will be a circular saw Sc/4SW valued at pLN 23,000 endowed by ScM Group polska Sp. z o.o. The wholesaler who wins the competition is going to receive a car prize, namely fiat fiorino cargo endowed by fiat professional. n

Final Gala: 2 April 2009, 5.00 pm, Linden Avenue Organis-ers: Inwestor Publishing House, the editor of Meblarstwo Komponenty i Technologie monthly and Poznań International Fair, Sponsor of the award for wholesaler: Fiat Professional Sponsor of the award for voters: SCM Group Polska Sp. z o.o.

Such an opportunity only at the trade fair new technical solutions, effective tech-nologies, new materials and interesting design, all in line with the latest trends in the global economy, can be found at the trade fair.

e xhibitors go beyond showcasing them at their stands, and more and more often they

prepare a special promotion of their offer. It is worth taking a closer look at such activities.for example various applications of cellular boards in mass furniture production will be presented in a special area. This event is co-organised by the Egger company, producer of lightweight cellular boards that are winning the furniture market. We have clearly defined ourselves as the innovator. Eurolight is a great challenge for the market and it will have a powerful impact on furniture construc-tion in the years to come, said Michael Egger, the company owner. If so, perhaps it would be worthwhile to learn something about cellular boards, their ergonom-ics and options of combining them with different materials?

a presentation of a mineral material that has been on the market for quite a while but has recently be-come extremely popular also looks promising. This material from the Rehau company is known as Rau-solid and has a stone-like appearance but a warm pleasant feel. Its properties allow to offer a com-prehensive system of products, from solid slabs for worktops, through washbasins, kitchen sinks and other accessories. at the fair not only possible ap-plications of this material are to be discussed, but also accessories for its processing. Many visitors will surely be interested in the Rauvolet acoustic-line, a modern roller shutter system for furniture offered by Rehau. What makes the acoustic-line different from other furniture roller shutter systems is the new type of profile design: holes punched along the length of the profile which, combined with a special viscose-based fibre applied inside the hol-low section, effectively reduces noise exposure and gives roller shutters incredible noise absorp-tion properties. This is a wonderful solution for of-fice furniture, in particular for increasingly popular open space offices. n

The Association of Polish Sawmills was established in 2006 and gathers 50 small and medium enterprises that saw up to 50,000 m3 of timber per annum. These are often family companies that employ an av-erage of 25 persons. However, they are very important for the economy, because they have a large share in gDP on one hand, and create jobs in small towns, where they tend to be located, on the other.

F irst and foremost, the Association maintains con-tacts with the administration of State Forests and

its organisational units and participates in the works of the directorate as a member of forest committees. It is also in-volved in the decision-making process at the level of state administration. An important task of the Association is to negotiate prices of raw materials, develop the most conve-nient terms and conditions of purchase, care for the quality and establish standards. The Association is trying to promote matters of importance for woodworking production and sawmill operation in a dialogue with decision-making insti-tutions, parliamentary committees and representatives of

ministries or local governments. It also organises meetings and conferences on crucial industry issues in order to facili-tate production in sawmills. The Association is actively in-volved in the life of the woodworking industry, which finds confirmation in its participation in the DREMA trade fair. This year Chairman Andrzej Kaliszan also invites representatives of the woodworking industry to the stand of the Association organised under the slogan ”Buyers of round timber, unite”. He believes participation in DREMA to be a wonderful oppor-tunity to present the Association and its activity to sawmill representatives from all over Poland. This is a good place to hold talks about the situation of the woodworking industry, re-establish contacts and find new members. n

Due to the application of 78 mm thick frame, this profile can be used for manufacturing soundproof windows (with proper glazing and two edge seals, the window will comply with class 5 rating, (45-49 dB sound reduction) or en-ergy-efficient windows (after providing proper glazing with low thermal transmittance value (Ug 0.6), the resulting thermal conductivity can be 0.93 W/mK. Energy-efficient windows of GOLD IV 92 systemIV 92 system from Karl Gold Werkzeugfabrik GmbH is based on the tried and tested solution certified to DIN 68 121 and EN 847-1 standards. Due to the use of 92 mm thick frame, 3 edge seals can be applied in the seal area, 2 of them placed in rabbets of the sash. Soundproof window can be obtained after employing proper glazing and two edge seals – the window will then comply with class 5 rating, i.e. 45-49 dB sound reduction. Moreover, when proper glazing with low ther-mal transmittance value (Ug 0.7) is provided, the resulting thermal conductivity can be 0.96 W/mK. What is important, argon-filled window units with Ug 0.7 are broadly available. At Ug 0.6, the overall thermal conductivity value can be reduced to Uw 0.89 W/mK.

Energy-efficient windows of GOLD-plus IV 101 systemThe application of GOLD-plus system results in extremely low Uw values – owing to 3 edge seals, 25 mm glazing depth, and the use of widely available PU foam as a sound absorbing core. When frames are profiled, the only waste product is wood chips. Future disposal of the product will also be unproblematic. By employ-ing proper sound absorbing insulation inserts along with soundproof glazing, noise reduction windows can be produced with class VI rating, which was previously possible only in the case of casement windows. Due to the composite structure of the GOLD-plus system, all wood species and colours can be used in the produc-tion process.
