REFLECTION Stewardship
““Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?’ ‘Here I am,’ I said, ‘send me!’” (Isaiah 6:8)
Every day, in little ways and in big ways, God asks, “Whom shall I send?” Whether it is someone to take on a new ministry, to give a
friendly smile to a stranger or say a word of encouragement to a friend, God constantly provides opportunities to help someone in need. The next time you hear God calling, have the courage to
walk through the door and say “Here I am, Lord.”

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Have you ever participated in various trust exercises, where you
have to place your faith in others around you? Maybe it was falling backwards with your eyes closed while the
person's voice speaking to you seemed to drift further away. Maybe it was jumping from a height into people's arms that didn't seem
strong enough to catch you. These activities were supposed to show you the meaning of trust and help grow that trust in you for your
comrades. Sometimes it worked. Other times, some prankster would actually let you fall, and then you learned to trust no one. So
much for building up our ability to trust. Trust is important, especially in our relationship with Jesus. He
calls us all the time and asks for us to trust. However, because of doubt or a desire to follow our own will, we choose to disregard his
request. After objecting to Jesus' request to lower his net into the water, Peter was humbled when he caught so much fish that the net began to tear. Peter was a fisherman by trade. Surely he knew what the catch was probably going to be that day. But Jesus asked him to follow his will. Peter wanted to follow his own. Peter realized that
his trust from then on should be in the Lord. Do you sometimes think your generosity will bear little fruit? Do you wonder if your surrender to God in stewardship living really
amounts to much at all? Trust in Jesus, the one who calls you to this life. His word is truth, and he would never let you fall.

SPREAD LOVE
“Reach out and help others. If you have the power to make someone happy, do it. Be a vessel, be the change, be the difference, or be the inspiration. Shine your light as an example. The world needs more of that.” ~ Germany Kent
Jackie DeShannon would definitely agree with the words of Germany Kent. She wrote a song that is very familiar, I would think, to all of us:
“What the world needs now is love, sweet love It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of What the world needs now is love, sweet love, No not just for some but for everyone.”
Our world appears to be extremely self-centered. There are too many people who focus on their own needs, wants, and desires. Oftentimes, they do all that they can to fulfill their wants, even at the cost of others.
I cannot help but think Jesus must get incredibly sad when He looks at us and sees what we are doing. He invested so much of Himself — actually investing His entire self — teaching us that we need to look out for others. He wants us to care for each other. He wants us to value each other. He wants us to cherish each other.
We are given many opportunities to do just that. Our opportunities are fueled by the gifts that God has given to us so generously. We were created in God’s image and likeness and, as if that were not enough, each of us was entrusted with a set of gifts that can enhance our world.
What we need to do is quit looking at ourselves and begin focusing on others. There are so many people in incredible need nowadays. They are found in all age brackets, all walks of life, all colors, and all nationalities. Many are ignored because, for one reason or another, we state that they do not belong.
How can a brother or sister not belong? Remember, we are all brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. He, our brother, reminded us that we all have one Father. If God is our Father and we are brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ, it would behoove us to begin to care for others better than we presently do.
We may be busy doing good works for others but we cannot rest on our laurels. Those good works are not the be all and end all, they are merely the beginning. There are always others in need, others who are without, others who need to know that they are loved. What the world needs now is love, sweet love. Let us pledge to be the instruments of Christ’s love by the manner in which we live our lives.
FAITH ACTION: Renew your efforts to care for the needy among us whenever and wherever you see someone who needs help.

PLANNING AHEAD One of our parish’s synod goals encompasses Religious Formation and Evangelization. We want to do as much as possible to give people an opportunity to get in touch with their faith in new ways. To that end, we are planning on hosting a Parish Mission from Sunday, April 7th to Wednesday, April 10th.
Our speaker will be John Schweisthal from Good News Ministries of South Florida, Inc. Some of you may remember John as he gave a Parish Mission here about ten years ago. John has dedicated his adult life to being a lay evangelist and giving missions throughout our country. He made a decision last year he would retire from the work after this year. He wants to spend as much time as possible in our diocese as this is the area from which he hails. We will be sharing more with you as the time nears. At this time, however, I ask you to put these dates in your calendar and try to make yourself free for his talks. I truly believe that you will be edified.

From Your Parish Synod Committee Evangelization Has Its Rewards!
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Show mercy this week by performing one or more of
the corporal works of mercy: Feed the hungry. Give drink to the thirsty. Clothe the naked.
Shelter the homeless. Comfort the imprisoned.
Visit the sick. Bury the dead. Evangelize by practicing these acts of mercy.
Learn about your faith online! A good source of evangelization information is
https://formed.org. Our parish has paid for access to this site, so let’s use it! Call the parish office for login information. Once you log in, you’ll find
answers to all the hard questions about our faith, as well as
lectures and courses for evangelization and apologetics.

Vocations Committee Are you concerned about the
conditions in the world today? Our only consolation to help us cope with the world around us
is the beauty and knowledge of our priests, as they have the ability to lead, love and counsel us all.
We must respect them and pray for them daily. They are our greatest teachers and peace makers and they need
our prayers to provide them with continued strength.
Catholics Coming Home Catholics leave the church or drift away for a variety of reasons, some due to unhappiness about Church teachings or anger with a member or members of the clergy. Others never really intended
to break with the Church, but simply got into the bad habit of not going and wake up one day to discover it has been years.
Those of us who are active in our faith need to make a concerted personal effort to welcome these individuals back into being
active members of the Catholic Church again.
Catholics Coming Home A six-week series has begun, but you may join us anytime.
Come and bring a friend or relative, too! Weekly Wednesday Sessions at 7:00 p.m. until March 6, 2019 For more info, please contact the Parish Office: (219) 836-8610.

St. Thomas More School February 10, 2019
Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe On the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe in December, the student body of St. Thomas More School
gathered in the gymnasium for a brief reenactment of Mary’s appearance before Juan Diego in Mexico in the 16th century, followed by the Rosary, read in Spanish by 8th grade students.
At the conclusion of the Rosary, everyone in attendance was treated to homemade “elotes”, a Mexican street food made of corn, seasonings and a creamy base...delicious! Our thanks to STMS Spanish teacher,
Mrs. Elisa Genova for coordinating, and cooking for, this special school-wide event.
Congratulations STMS 7th Grade Boys Congratulations to the St. Thomas More School 7th grade boys basketball team, who finished their season
as runner-up in the Diocesan Boys Basketball Championship game. We are very proud of these hard-working young men for their great display of sportsmanship and

The Live Christ, Share Christ Movement is now active in our Diocese, with the endorsements of Pope Benedict, our own Bishop Hying & Fr. Mike, and has been
effective in other countries around the world. The Live Christ, Share Christ Movement was designed to help
rekindle and strengthen our faith through the power of the Holy Spirit, so that we may know Christ and
love him more deeply. In response to God’s love, we can share our faith and love by
the way we live as an example to family and friends.
Live Christ, Share Christ Testimonial I first experienced the Live Christ Share Christ movement
at their seminar in January of this year. It was a great blessing to me. The wonderful speakers and
musicians truly inspired me. I hope and pray that this movement will spread in our parish and become a blessing
to many others, too. Cindy Keilman
