Topic: Common Roots (Greek and Latin)

    Grade Level:5th Grade

    Subject: Language Arts

ObjectivesBehavioral objective(s): Students will be able to recognize different

Greek and Latin Roots in words (with the help of a guide) to discernmeaning of related words and use them in original compositions both

    orally and written.

PurposeThis lesson is intended to give students a new tool for discerning

meaning in words they see in the world. The PowerPoint aspect will amplify

students experience of learning about how words are built. Having the

large visuals (which can be animated to convey meaning in a more obvious

ways) will help students grasp the concepts and go into individual practice

with confidence. Using the SoundCloud application will allow the students to

practice speaking extemporaneously with opportunities for instant self-

reflection and sharing among peers and parents. SoundCloud will also allow

students to understand the usefulness of the program for things like

feedback. Finally, it will create a new opportunity to record student

achievement beyond worksheets and drawings verbal expression.

    Procedures/Activities

    Introduction/Anticipatory Set/Engagement and Exploration:

Disguised Words... Begin by explaining that some words have other words

hidden in them, and that they can give us clues to the meaning of the bigger

word. PowerPoint w/ examples of words, then the slide would animate to

reveal their roots. Students canbegin to volunteer connections between

    roots and their larger words.

    Model:

A few more PowerPoint slides of words, dissecting them as a model for the

students on how to discern meaning this way. I will vocalize my thought

processes as the animations show how I take apart words.

Check for Understanding/Explanation:Give examples of Words that can be dissected, call on students to take apart

the words and figure out meaning, or how they can use roots to tell what it

    means.

    Guided Practice/Exploration:

2 Stations: The first will be a writing exercise of drawing a root from the hatand brainstorming as many words as they can from that one root, and then

repeating. Later on there will be a competition to see how many they can get

from a single root. The second station will be at a computer where the

student will use the selected list of vocabulary words (divided by root word)

at the computer to improvise a story using as many words from a root family

as possible. The student will record this on SoundCloud and then add in

captions at the time they say it of each vocab word. Ideally there will be

several computers so many students can work on the recordings at once. As

a teacher I may have to help with tech issues but I will also be monitoring

    the written work as well.

Check for Understanding/Explanation:The class reconvenes and the students compete to think of as many words as

they can in teams from a given root. Anyone who then wants to play their

story for the class can volunteer as well.

    Independent Practice/Elaboration:

Using a mixture of vocabulary words, students will write stories of their own

for homework and underline all of the vocab words used and highlight the

part of the root that they can see in the word. This can be done on the

    computer or can be handwritten.

    Re-teaching:

Getting the students to go over what they have learned can be accomplished

by having the child and parent listen to the track together online at home.

The child can then explain how the certain special words are related.

    Closure/Evaluation:

To close I will assign the homework and give a handout for kids to giveto their parents about how they can interact further at home on

    SoundCloud.
