2/2 Drill - copy
• Analytical Systems – systems that mathematically or scientifically make comparisons.
• Judgmental Systems – systems that use human opinions and values
![Page 3: Lesson 7: Controlling Technology Systems Lesson 7 Big Idea Controls are mechanisms or activities that use information to cause systems to change. Purpose.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c00e1a28abf838cca290/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Lesson 2: Controlling Technology Systems
Exploration – Define and apply understanding of Analytical and Judgmental systems to several examples.
• Analytical Systems – systems that mathematically or scientifically make comparisons.
• Judgmental Systems – systems that use human opinions and values
• Judgment may be base on intuition - human ability to sense or know immediately without reasoning
![Page 4: Lesson 7: Controlling Technology Systems Lesson 7 Big Idea Controls are mechanisms or activities that use information to cause systems to change. Purpose.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c00e1a28abf838cca290/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
This would be analytical: I want to drink exactly 40 mL of milk
How do you know when to stop pouring?
Judgmental
You want enough to drink but you don’t want to over pour and make a mess.
![Page 5: Lesson 7: Controlling Technology Systems Lesson 7 Big Idea Controls are mechanisms or activities that use information to cause systems to change. Purpose.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c00e1a28abf838cca290/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Are there too many people on this boat? Are they over
the legal limit?
Analytical
Just count the people and compare to the legal limit.
![Page 6: Lesson 7: Controlling Technology Systems Lesson 7 Big Idea Controls are mechanisms or activities that use information to cause systems to change. Purpose.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c00e1a28abf838cca290/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Is this suitcase too heavy to take on the plane?
Analytical
Just weigh it and compare to the airline limit.
![Page 7: Lesson 7: Controlling Technology Systems Lesson 7 Big Idea Controls are mechanisms or activities that use information to cause systems to change. Purpose.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c00e1a28abf838cca290/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
How long should I wait before I eat again?
Judgmental
You often eat when you feel you are hungry.
![Page 8: Lesson 7: Controlling Technology Systems Lesson 7 Big Idea Controls are mechanisms or activities that use information to cause systems to change. Purpose.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c00e1a28abf838cca290/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Is it a “keeper”?
Analytical
Fish must meet size or weight requirements. Just measure and compare.
![Page 9: Lesson 7: Controlling Technology Systems Lesson 7 Big Idea Controls are mechanisms or activities that use information to cause systems to change. Purpose.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022081520/5697c00e1a28abf838cca290/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)

our judgment. We turn left and right based on “intuition” and experience.

To the Wall and Back
• Position robot facing a wall about 5’ away
• Robot waits for your sound command
• Drive toward the wall until 18” away and stop.
• Robot shouts “Hurray!”
• Turn around and drive away from the wall until another sound command stops it.

Extension Activity – “It’s Under Control”
Controlling Technology Systems
ContextMany jobs are too dangerous, dull, or
dirty for humans to do. Technology systems have been developed to free humans from this kind of work yet still get the jobs done. Exploration on land, sea, and space is often done through the use of robots. With the use of sensors, a processor, and a program, robots can autonomously carry out a task.
Challenge:Adjust and program a Lego Mindstorm “Gobot Rover” to explore a cave and deploy a (simulated) remote air quality sensing device in the cavern with the highest ceiling.

Box Escape• Robot will be placed on the floor inside a
2’x2’ box with one side removed.
• Program must begin with a “I’m ready” sound from the robot.
• Movement will begin with a clapping sound.
• Robot must spin (slowly) until it detects the missing wall.
• It will then stop spinning and drive forward out of the box until it hears another “clap”
