President’s welcome A warm welcome everyone to today's 'Kingstone Press Cider' NCL Premier Division match against Hull Dockers. I do hope all who have travelled across the '62 have enjoyed a safe and uneventful journey and enjoy their visit to 'Reactiv Park'. One look at the league table tells you just how important today's game is. I can't really recall a season like it: everyone beating each other and a different side at the top every other week. If a team can string a run of victories together now then they will have every chance of coming out on top. The 'Dockers' arrive today in the unusual position of 'top dogs' over in Hull. For so many years West Hull, East Hull, Skirlaugh and, albeit briefly, Myton Warriors have held that title but the Dockers began the season with a resounding victory over us and they've continued that form ever since. We will have to turn in a great performance to claim the win today and maintain our title challenge. Last week's two point defeat at Wath Brow was hard to take. A very harsh sin binning of man of the match Richard Merville in the middle of the first half proved decisive as we conceded twelve points during his absence. We finished the game very much on top and there was relief all round for the home support when the final whistle went. The lads though enjoyed the trip back playing the "golf ball" game and dancing around Sandie's "curtains"! Just in case you've not seen July's 'Chevinedger' Draw results, the £200 winner was No 133 (A Long) and the £50 runner up was No 73 (M Brock-lehurst). If you aren't yet a member please do join up. It costs just £5.00 a month, we have monthly winners and a couple of bonus draws. Please see me, Marc Lovering or our 'National Cup' winning coach Martin Scrim-shaw. Finally, I've a plea to make to all our dog-owning supporters. Please, please will you all keep your dogs on their leads at all times. We had an incident at the club last weekend which resulted in a young girl sustaining a facial injury after an altercation with an over excited dog which wasn't on it's lead. Fortunately the injury wasn't too serious but it could so easily have been far worse. Our brilliant new children's playground probably does mean we have more younger children around on match days so the risk of a more serious incident has increased. None of us, I'm sure, want to be talking about a much more serious incident. Your committee have debated many times whether we should introduce a complete ban on dogs but have always shied away from taking that decision. Your co-operation will mean we don't have to debate this point once again. Get behind the lads, they need all your support..................... Eddie G-S.

Presidents WelcomeWelcome everyone to Chevinedge for this afternoon’s 2015 Grand Final re-run with Leigh Miners Rangers. I extend a special welcome to all who have travelled across the M62 from Leigh.
I still firmly believe there is always a higher level of expectation around a game when the “Champions are in Town”, even more so when you were the losing finalists. So, let’s all look forward and hope we witness a great game today ........ but with a slightly different outcome this time! I still occasionally wake up all hot and feverish in the middle of the night with flashbacks to the final and that mercurial number 7 Leigh have in their side. Fair play to Scott O’Brien, he pulled his team through with an outstanding performance. And then he kidded us all afterwards into believing he was retiring but I see he’s back this season.
I hope you like the action shots of the lads inside the programme. I think they look great though Ben doesn’t look too comfortable, does he? We have Jade Smith to thank for these. I think Jade is doing a bit of work for the Courier so has agreed to cover a few of our games. You’ll notice Jade set up in the far corners of the pitch, camouflaged if the weather isn’t good so don’t fall over her!
We owe huge thanks to an old playing rival of ours, Ben Thompson who played for many years at Ovenden. Ben is now a very successful local businessman but was willing to help us out last weekend at very short notice when we discovered that the water in the showers in the changing rooms wasn’t heating. Ben personally fixed the problem on Saturday morning so in recognition of him helping us out we have made him an honorary club sponsor and sponsor of Gareth’s page.
I have an apology to make to Dave Taylor (Tiger). At the beginning of the season he kindly paid to sponsor a couple of players on the ‘Today’s Squads Page’ but I forgot to inform the editor. So that’s been corrected today. If anyone else would like to sponsor some of the players, please come and see me.
You will read later about other initiatives and events in and around the club. Please do what you can to support and help.
As always, get right behind the lads today as I know your support does make a difference ................ Eddie G-S
Coach’s CommentsLeigh MinersToday sees the visit of Leigh Miners who are the form team in the competition after two impressive wins over West Hull and Wigan St Pats. After winning the league, grand final and cup in 2015 no one can argue they are the team to beat. I have full respect for Allan and the way Leigh play rugby, I am sure there are many similarities in our methods and attitudes. I can’t see anything else today than a close fought game with the two best teams in the division.
Last Home Match v Wath BrowLast week was a good win and an important 2 NCL points after the disappointing performance against St Pats a week earlier. It has to be said that Wath Brow had a number of their key players at a wedding and fielded a young team, so we are not getting too excited but any win in the NCL Premier takes some doing. The Wath Brow coach Ian Rooney was very gracious in defeat but I could see that a couple of our louder players had got under his skin a bit and will make an already tough away trip to Wath Brow a little tougher! I’m sure it won’t take many guesses to name the two culprits.
Siddal players in England Lions SquadIt is always good to catch up with Ian and have a chat about the England Lions squad he leads. Of course Shaun Garrod is the captain and we have Ian Davies, Craig Sanderson, Gareth Blackburn and Freddie Walker in the squad. I believe it is due to be named this week and expect those five players to be named in the squad again possibly with one more. That is a fair achievement and credit has to go to Ian for being so honest in selection. With a tour to Fiji coming up this year it’s exciting times for all those involved, I am sure Leigh Miners will too have their fair share of players in that squad. Add to that Ben West and Dominic Booth going on tour in Europe soon with representing the Yorkshire Mens league and it shows that all Siddal players that these kind of things are achievable with some hard work. I know there is a dinner so support this coming up on August 6th and the lads would appreciate your attendance.
Injury updatesHopefully it won’t be too long before we see long term injury victims Byron Smith and Sean McCormack, two big players in our team. Byron tore his bicep in the York game and had it operated on recently. It is a serious injury but Baz is fully committed to getting back fit and having an impact on the 2016 season. Sean too had a bad break in his arm and a lengthy spell off work to go with it, I know Sean too is itching to get back out onto the field and I hope he is given the all clear. Even with a pot on his arm Baz makes his presence felt, usually on the way home from away trips!Enjoy the game,
Gareth

Coach’s Corner Today we play Hull Dockers who currently sit on the same points as ourselves. Having been well beat over there in the first game of the season we know we face a tough challenge to take the two points to-day. Our last two games have been away from home and
I think we have to be satisfied with a good win at Wigan St Pats who were top beforehand and a loss by two points away at Wath Brow, although we were hugely disappointed to lose the game. Anyone who went to watch the game against Wigan St Pats will have been im-pressed with the first half performance the lads put on, the game was over by half time. The second half was a scrappy affair but we had to be satisfied. Great to see debuts from Jack Georgiou and Nick Raws-thorne whilst Connor McCallum made his first appearance of the sea-son, all performed well and added some punch off the bench. Wath Brow was a disappointing result I think it was pretty clear that the game changed when we went down to 12 men for ten minutes, it was during this spell we went from 6 in front to 6 behind and the game had changed. The lads managed to bring the game back to 18-16 with only 5 minutes to go, unfortunately the kick for goal just missed the posts. The trip back was certainly eventful! All the new lads this season had to perform a song and come under some intense questioning. Fijian flyer 'Bacs' started the party with his performance and things went down hill from there!! Although the team had lost it was a rare chance for a few beers together and a good opportunity to get the new lads in the mix. A big well done to our u14s who became the first ever junior Siddal National Champions, a fair effort when you think about some of the teams we have had over the years and is a good sign for the young players. Anthony Waite and Martin Scrimshaw have done an out-standing job with them and I am sure have set a standard for our oth-er young teams, some of which already seem to be showing similar signs of promise. Get behind the lads to day and enjoy the next two home games as we have no home ties to enjoy in August as the fixture list takes a bit of a break. Enjoy the game, Gareth

My Club MattersAcademy Side beaten by Illingworth
Our Academy team followed up their best performance of the season against Doncaster Toll Bar, with their worst for a couple of years, when beaten by Illingworth at Mason Green last week. Despite the absence of a handful of regular starters, Paul Long was still able to field a strong side and on the day they fell short of the high standards they have been performing to. Today sees the team with a difficult away try to Sharlston Rovers. Let’s hope the lads can re-produce the spirit and quality they displayed against Toll Bar.
The Academy A side have another blank weekend due to the Bank Holiday.
Sam West
Our former player and ongoing sponsor Sam West has provided us with a substantial donation to kick start our aim of securing a gymnasium and combat room within Chevinedge playing fields. Sam’s generosity is allowing us to move forward with developing the plans so that we can submit a planning application. We are very grateful to Sam and Mary for their ongoing financial support.
We intend to share the plans when available to members, for what would be a tremendous facility for the entire club. While the investment will be considerable, we are currently paying out a substantial sum in rent each week. Watch this space for further updates.

Captain’s Comments
Last Week:
It was good to get back to winning ways last week against Wath Brow. A great first half performance put us well in control but we took our foot off the pedal in the second half and made the game a lot tougher than it should have been. We know we will have to put in a full 80 minute performance this week against Leigh Miners to come out on top. Miners were the best team in the competition last year and look to have set off in the same form this year. Hopefully we can avenge last year’s home defeat and stay top of the table for another week.
England Lions
I’m sure it has already been mentioned but we have recently had 6 players named in the England Lions train on squad for their tour to Fiji in November. The train on squad of 46 is to be cut to 25 for the actual tour. Not only is it a huge honour for the players involved, it is also a fantastic achievement by the club. Siddal have the most representatives in the squad with the next highest being 3 players from any one club. The club should be very proud and I hope it shows the young players at our club that playing professionally is not the be all and end all – even if they don’t make it they can still have a brilliant future with Siddal and the chance to represent their country.
Mixed Dinner
With having so many players in the England squad, fundraising is now a top priority. The lads in the train on squad have organised a Mixed Dinner at the club on Saturday 6th August. Luke Robinson has kindly agreed to speak and the night will be hosted Jonny Lawless. There will be a 3 course meal followed by live music to finish the evening. It promises to be a great night and all this is only £25 per ticket. We are also looking for companies to sponsor the tables and any raffle/auction items. If anyone is interested in attending or sponsoring/donating raffle prizes please speak to me or George Ambler.

Chairman’s Chatter
Welcome to Chevinedge for this top of the table clash between the
early season pace-setters.
Both Siddal and Miners have carried on where they left off last
season when they met in the NCL Grand Final. That was a very entertaining game
if painful to watch. I’m sure Siddal will be looking for a win to make amends for the
Grand Final defeat but both sides know each other very well and are pretty evenly
balanced. Discipline will be key as neither side will want to give too many penalties
away against opposition with so many strike options.
As always there is plenty going on off the pitch. We now have the drawings for the
proposed onsite combat room and gym to be built in memory of Martin Lewis.
Fund raising will begin in earnest once we have the final costings in place. The new
building will mean we will be able to bring at least some of the off site training that
takes place back to Chevinedge saving our teams and club a great deal of money
in the process. It will be a ‘self build’ so if there is anybody out there who thinks
they could help with skills, materials, sponsorship etc please do get in touch.
With my youngest son having recently started with our U7’s I’ve been fortunate to
spend a bit of time around our youngest age groups. The Tykes ( 3-6 year olds)
have terrific numbers every Friday and the coaches and helpers do a great job in
keeping so many little ones entertained. With over 40 registered U7’s split between
two teams and healthy U8’s and U9’s we have over 100 mini players at the club.
Something we should all be very proud of.
We’ve been in the club for eight years now and one or two areas are looking a
bit tired. Some works will be done to tidy up the dancefloor area near the bar and
the entrance staircase which should freshen things up a bit. Please do come and
have a look after the game....
Marc.

Chairman’s chatter It would take a brave man to call this seasons NCL Premier League. I've lost count of how many times the leadership has changed hands with Rochdale Mayfield currently occupying top spot. I didn't make last week-ends game away at Wath Brow or had the opportunity to catch up with Gareth but I gather it was a quality game which could have gone either way. I seem to be saying it every week but the next two games, both at home against Dockers and Miners who currently sit a place below and a place above us look like being season defining games. Dockers took us apart over in Hull early in the season with the customary help from the match official. The only bright spot being the performance of Chester Butler. Miners impressive season con-tinues. If they win their games in hand they will go top. They have however played a lot of rugby already this season and fatigue may play a part as we move into September and beyond. The bottom of the table is just as fascinating as the top with Wath Brow and Thatto Heath both now finding form and putting pressure on the teams above them. Thatto in particular looked a shadow of their former selves when we beat them comfortably at Crusader Park but that seems to have acted as a much needed kick up the backside for them as their results have picked up since. The next two games will take place in peak holiday season and the winners may well prove to be the side with the most strength in depth. The ability to pull in talented U19's and U23's has certainly made a difference. Gareth's last two squads have featured two young props in Connor MacCallum and Jack Georgiou who have both come through our junior ranks. Jack has spent some time away at Bradford Bulls playing for the Bulls Scholarship and Acad-emy sides. Ensuring we have a playing offer and environment that entices our players back once their time at a professional club has come to an end (at least for the time being) is something we have been working on and we are delighted to have Jack back with us. Enjoy the match...Marc
