President’s welcome A warm welcome everyone to today's 'Kingstone Press Cider' NCL Premier Division match against Hull Dockers. I do hope all who have travelled across the '62 have enjoyed a safe and uneventful journey and enjoy their visit to 'Reactiv Park'. One look at the league table tells you just how important today's game is. I can't really recall a season like it: everyone beating each other and a different side at the top every other week. If a team can string a run of victories together now then they will have every chance of coming out on top. The 'Dockers' arrive today in the unusual position of 'top dogs' over in Hull. For so many years West Hull, East Hull, Skirlaugh and, albeit briefly, Myton Warriors have held that title but the Dockers began the season with a resounding victory over us and they've continued that form ever since. We will have to turn in a great performance to claim the win today and maintain our title challenge. Last week's two point defeat at Wath Brow was hard to take. A very harsh sin binning of man of the match Richard Merville in the middle of the first half proved decisive as we conceded twelve points during his absence. We finished the game very much on top and there was relief all round for the home support when the final whistle went. The lads though enjoyed the trip back playing the "golf ball" game and dancing around Sandie's "curtains"! Just in case you've not seen July's 'Chevinedger' Draw results, the £200 winner was No 133 (A Long) and the £50 runner up was No 73 (M Brock-lehurst). If you aren't yet a member please do join up. It costs just £5.00 a month, we have monthly winners and a couple of bonus draws. Please see me, Marc Lovering or our 'National Cup' winning coach Martin Scrim-shaw. Finally, I've a plea to make to all our dog-owning supporters. Please, please will you all keep your dogs on their leads at all times. We had an incident at the club last weekend which resulted in a young girl sustaining a facial injury after an altercation with an over excited dog which wasn't on it's lead. Fortunately the injury wasn't too serious but it could so easily have been far worse. Our brilliant new children's playground probably does mean we have more younger children around on match days so the risk of a more serious incident has increased. None of us, I'm sure, want to be talking about a much more serious incident. Your committee have debated many times whether we should introduce a complete ban on dogs but have always shied away from taking that decision. Your co-operation will mean we don't have to debate this point once again. Get behind the lads, they need all your support..................... Eddie G-S.

Presidents WelcomeHello everyone and a warm welcome to ‘Chevinedge’ to see this afternoon’s ‘Kingstone Press Cider’ NCL Premier Division clash with our old foes, West Hull. I do hope all the players, coaching team, officials and supporters of West Hull have had an uneventful journey across the M62 and enjoy their time with us today.

I’m really looking forward to the game. West Hull appear to have strengthened their squad since we played the reverse fixture back at the beginning of April. Their last two results, victories up in Cumbria at Kells and then at home to reigning champions, Leigh Miners, tells you everything. If the game is as good as our last home game against Lock Lane then we are in for a treat.

Ben West and Kyle Ackroyd have been over in Serbia playing a couple of games with the ‘Yorkshire Lionhearts’, a squad drawn from teams participating in the ‘Yorkshire Men’s League’. I’m pleased to say the ‘Lionhearts’ have won both their games, first a 60-12 victory over ‘Belgrade’ and then a much tighter 16-12 win over the national side.

It is two weeks ago today that Ronan Costello was injured in the ‘Giants’ academy game with Salford. Jamie Greenwood, the younger brother of our coach, Gareth, was playing in that game and naturally he, along with his academy teammates, have been hit hard by the tragic consequences. Please can I ask you all to show our respect and support for those lads and Ronan’s family by joining the players in a minute’s applause before today’s game.

If you have nothing planned for tomorrow morning try to get yourself across to Wigan St Jude’s to cheer on our U15’s in their BARLA National Cup semi final with StJudes U16’s. Kick off is 11.45am. I know the coach is departing at 9.15am and might have a few spare seats so check with either Martin Scrimshaw or Matt Smithies who will both probably be around today. Good luck lads from the whole club.

Enjoy today’s game, get right behind the lads and help keep them top of the pile

Eddie G-S.

Coach’s CommentsToday’s game West Hull will arrive today full of confidence after a good win over Leigh Miners and the week before a win at Kells. They have recruited well recently and I am sure that will make today a tough game.

Last WeekWe had a good win at York Acorn last week, to look at I know when the top team beats the bottom it looks like a formality but I don’t take any win in this league for granted. Teams are fired up to play against us and that makes every game hard work and means we have to be on our game. It also looked to me like a number of the lads have obviously enjoyed their week off! A notable 4 try effort for England Lions winger Gareth Blackburn and great to see young Jack Georgiou stepping up to a starting shirt and putting a big performance in.The game also saw a debut for young GB student international Morgan Bowden. There are a number of lads from the 23s who could have made the step up but after speaking to Longy and Jason we decided they couldn’t afford to lose any key players, it is important to get the balance right. Morgan is a university friend of Joel McFarlane, a former Siddal junior who has returned from Newcastle University.

19s & 23s AcademyI know the Jason and Longy have been disappointed with recent performances and I am sure the lads have. The Yorkshire Premier Division is a tough league to play in and it is a top effort by the coaching staff & players to be competing against established clubs first teams. Sounds like it is a division that you have to turn up in every week, I hope the lads can put in a big performance at Doncaster today. Russell Holroyds u19s have made an excellent start to their season and had a good win at Stanningley last time out. They take on 2nd placed Birstall today, I am hoping with an earlier kick off so people can watch both games. Every week we see lads move between the three teams, this was a key part of the plan when the Academy was set up.

Smudge ready to take the reignsAt the time of writing I am hoping to be at the game today but I am expecting a new arrival at anytime so if you see the return of Siddal legend Nick ‘Smudger’ Smith shouting the orders on the touchline that is why.

Andy Locke to sing at Wembley!Andy announced to the lads on Saturday that he will be singing at the Challenge Cup Final in August in Siddal colours, a great achievement and very well deserved. Andy has been a committed and reliable physio at Siddal for many years. There is no evidence to suggest he can sing but he will have a good go.

Enjoy the game,

Gareth

Coach’s Corner Today we play Hull Dockers who currently sit on the same points as ourselves. Having been well beat over there in the first game of the season we know we face a tough challenge to take the two points to-day. Our last two games have been away from home and

I think we have to be satisfied with a good win at Wigan St Pats who were top beforehand and a loss by two points away at Wath Brow, although we were hugely disappointed to lose the game. Anyone who went to watch the game against Wigan St Pats will have been im-pressed with the first half performance the lads put on, the game was over by half time. The second half was a scrappy affair but we had to be satisfied. Great to see debuts from Jack Georgiou and Nick Raws-thorne whilst Connor McCallum made his first appearance of the sea-son, all performed well and added some punch off the bench. Wath Brow was a disappointing result I think it was pretty clear that the game changed when we went down to 12 men for ten minutes, it was during this spell we went from 6 in front to 6 behind and the game had changed. The lads managed to bring the game back to 18-16 with only 5 minutes to go, unfortunately the kick for goal just missed the posts. The trip back was certainly eventful! All the new lads this season had to perform a song and come under some intense questioning. Fijian flyer 'Bacs' started the party with his performance and things went down hill from there!! Although the team had lost it was a rare chance for a few beers together and a good opportunity to get the new lads in the mix. A big well done to our u14s who became the first ever junior Siddal National Champions, a fair effort when you think about some of the teams we have had over the years and is a good sign for the young players. Anthony Waite and Martin Scrimshaw have done an out-standing job with them and I am sure have set a standard for our oth-er young teams, some of which already seem to be showing similar signs of promise. Get behind the lads to day and enjoy the next two home games as we have no home ties to enjoy in August as the fixture list takes a bit of a break. Enjoy the game, Gareth

Captain’s Comments

Past Few Weeks:We come in to this game on the back of a couple of good results and a week off. We had a very good win against Cas Lock Lane athome before the break. With a few regular starters missing the whole 17 really stood up and put in a great performance to win more comfortably than the score suggests. Following a week off we then travelled to York Acorn and again ran out comfortable winners. We are expecting a much tougher challenge today against a strong West Hull team.

Siddal AcademyThe 23s are finding the step up to the Premier Division quite a tough transition but it can only be good for them and the club as a whole. The step up to the first team is a big one so the tougher games the 23s are playing week in week out sets them up perfectly for when they are called in to the first team. I think this has been evident by the amount of players that have come in to the first team and not looked out of place. .The latest to make his first team debut was Kyle Ackroyd who looked like he was born to play at this level. Another good thing about Kyle making his debut was that he got to line up next to his uncle Brooky. I’m not sure how many other teams in the league will have uncle and nephew playing in the same team but it carries on a Siddal tradition from a few years ago when Uncle Shaun used to look after nephew Gareth (or maybe it was the other way round…)

U15sCongratulations and Good Luck to the U15s this week. Our all-conquering juniors won the Challenge Cup for the 4th year on the trot at the weekend with a 46-6 victory at Featherstone. This week they face the biggest challenge of their rugby lives by playing in the semi-final of the U16s National Cup. That’s not a typo – these lads are all U15s but are competing in the U16 competition to test themselves at a better (older) standard. They are proving that age matters nothing and have beaten some of the best U16s in the country. This week they face Wigan St Judes away and any support would be most welcome – speak to Scrimmy if you would like to go on the bus. I can’t make the trip but want to say a massive ‘Good Luck’ from all the first team – get to that final boys!!!

Chairman’s ChatterLast Saturday’s win at York Acorn was efficient rather than spectacular. Gareth Blackburn’s four tries and four goals contributing 24 of the 32 points we scored . The win coupled with a Miners defeat to today’s opponents West Hull meant we have opened a three point lead at the top of the table albeit second placed Wath Brow have a game in hand.

Today’s opponents West Hull form has been a bit patchy but wins in the last two games away at Kells and home to Leigh Miners suggests they are hitting top form.

There’s no doubting that the introduction of summer rugby has meant the club with the best squad rather than team will finish top at the end of the regular season. Already the majority of teams have used in excess of 30 players this season. We have used 34 players thus far with the latest being Saddleworth based Bowden Morgan. Welcome Bowden.

As most of you will know I now spend a lot of my weekends down in South Wales with the South Wales Scorpions. Last Sunday we welcomed Hunslet Hawks who featured former Siddal favourite Danny Williams. Needless to say Danny put in several big hits and scored a good try. He certainly looks like he is enjoying his time in League 1.

The day before I was down in Cornwall for the Cornish Rebels v Devon Sharks South West Challenge Cup Final. Before the match I overheard the Sharks coach claim he was from the posh part of Halifax. When I challenged him after the game that there wasn’t a posh part of Halifax it turns out not only was he from Halifax but used to play at Siddal. His name Tony Wolke and he sends his regards to all.

Enjoy the game ......... Marc.

Chairman’s chatter It would take a brave man to call this seasons NCL Premier League. I've lost count of how many times the leadership has changed hands with Rochdale Mayfield currently occupying top spot. I didn't make last week-ends game away at Wath Brow or had the opportunity to catch up with Gareth but I gather it was a quality game which could have gone either way. I seem to be saying it every week but the next two games, both at home against Dockers and Miners who currently sit a place below and a place above us look like being season defining games. Dockers took us apart over in Hull early in the season with the customary help from the match official. The only bright spot being the performance of Chester Butler. Miners impressive season con-tinues. If they win their games in hand they will go top. They have however played a lot of rugby already this season and fatigue may play a part as we move into September and beyond. The bottom of the table is just as fascinating as the top with Wath Brow and Thatto Heath both now finding form and putting pressure on the teams above them. Thatto in particular looked a shadow of their former selves when we beat them comfortably at Crusader Park but that seems to have acted as a much needed kick up the backside for them as their results have picked up since. The next two games will take place in peak holiday season and the winners may well prove to be the side with the most strength in depth. The ability to pull in talented U19's and U23's has certainly made a difference. Gareth's last two squads have featured two young props in Connor MacCallum and Jack Georgiou who have both come through our junior ranks. Jack has spent some time away at Bradford Bulls playing for the Bulls Scholarship and Acad-emy sides. Ensuring we have a playing offer and environment that entices our players back once their time at a professional club has come to an end (at least for the time being) is something we have been working on and we are delighted to have Jack back with us. Enjoy the match...Marc

THE MIGHTY SIDDAL WHITES U7’S

The Siddal Whites u7’s are a small part of the rugby club however everybody from the players, through the coaches/volunteers, to the spectators and parents are pleased and proud to be a part of the club.Originally there was only 1 under 7’s team but due to the massive popularity of Siddal ARLFC and the amount of kids, we had to split into Siddal Whites and Siddal Blues. Siddal Whites currently have 18 players signed on

Email: [email protected]: @siddalwhites7Facebook: Siddal whites

and 4 younger siblings who train with the team. And we are getting new players every week which is a credit to the team and all involved that they want to play for the mighty whites. We train on a Friday 6pm till 7pm, and we focus on ground roots rugby with lots of added fun. We play on a Sunday home and away under the Primary mini mod rules, which are fantastic and have really got behind. The coaches and the volunteers are committed to helping the kids learn rugby league but also values away from rugby such as Respect, helpfulness, togetherness. There main focus this season has revolved round team spirit and learning through FUN. The kids have responded really well to this approach. The Whites will be representing the club at 3 tournaments over the summer period and will also be attending the club day to help where needed on the 21st August31st July Blues and white tournament @ the club.7th August at Stanningly rangers14th August Leeds RhinosFinally there are too many to mention individually but would just like to thank everyone who helped us or are still helping us, it is massively appreciated and we would of struggled had not been for that help.
