Mathematics for Numeracy Teaching Award

What is the training about?It will support employees who are delivering Skills for Life or Functional Skills maths.

Training outcomesThis blended learning training will be delivered by a mixture of online tasks and classroom workshops.

What is the training about?It provides an introduction into teaching in the lifelong learning sector and is experiential in approach integrating theory with practice. Employees have opportunities to learn from each other through group work and discussion.

Who should attend?The award is appropriate for teachers, tutors and trainers who may be working, or intend to work, within an FE college, Adult and Community Learning Centre or LearningProvider and for those delivering work based training such as within voluntary, community, private and public organisations. The course is also suitable for new teachers and trainee teachers in the lifelong learning sector and also for those who are in training roles. Level 2 or equivalent in maths and English (GCSE grades A to C) is required.

Training outcomesOn completion, employees should understand:• the role, responsibilities and boundaries of the teacher in

the Learning and Skills Sector (LSS)• teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area• session planning and preparation• the delivery of inclusive and motivating sessions• assessment and recording progress.

There are two parts to the course, one theoretical and one practical. The evidence for this course will be collected via video recordings of discussions in class as well as written tasks and assignments.

Employees will also be required to keep a reflective journal and plan, present and evaluate a micro-teach session.

DurationOne year or less, part-time.

AssessmentTwo major assignments, one theoretical and one practical, both of which must be successfully completed to achieve the award. There is a minimum class attendance requirement of 80%.

ProgressionOn successful completion of this introductory course employees may want to progress on to the Level 4 Certificate, Level 5 Diploma or PGCE.

Education and Training Certificate

What is the training about?It is a first stage teaching qualification which has a teaching/training practice requirement.

Who should attend?It is an “in service” qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers/trainers in England. It may be possible for pre-service teachers/trainers (defined as those who are not formally contracted as teachers/trainers) to also complete this qualification.

All employees, whether pre-service or in-service must have access to 30 hours of teaching, have English and maths at Level 2 or equivalent and attend a successful interview. This qualification is also suitable for those delivering education and training in any learning environment

Training outcomesEmployees who successfully complete this qualification will have a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. They will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments and plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning. They will also be able to assess learning and use appropriate resources to support effective learning.

DurationThree hours per week on Tuesdays, 5pm to 8.30pm for six months.

AssessmentThe certificate is assessed continually.

ProgressionVarious employment opportunities within the Education and Training sector. There will also be the opportunity to progress onto the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.

Education and Training Diploma

What is the training about?This new Diploma course is experiential in approach and integrates theory with practice. Course members have opportunities to learn from each other through group work and discussion. Four teaching observations per year will be undertaken to support development. Who should attend?Employees should be qualified to Level 3 in the subject they intend to teach (or be able to demonstrate skills at this level. They need to have teaching hours in their chosen field and be teaching regularly throughout the two years of the course.

Employees must hold at least Level 2 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy (GCSE grade C or equivalent). Copies of certificates will be required before enrolment. They will need to demonstrate a good level of written English by completing a written task at interview.

Training outcomesThe course is split into a range of units which are required to be completed in order to gain credits to achieve the qualification.

DurationOne or two years dependent on pattern of study chosen.

AssessmentThe certificate is assessed continually.

ProgressionOnce employees have completed the Diploma, employees will be fully qualified to teach in the 16+ sector. They may wish to work in Sixth Form colleges, Further Education, Offender Learning or Adult and Community Education. Once qualified, they may apply for QTLS from the Institute for Learning. Delegates may also wish to undertake further study and take a subject specialist qualification in Literacy, ESOL or Numeracy, or move on to an MA in Education.

Mentoring NCFE Award

What is the training about?This qualification will help employees to gain an insight into the role and practice of mentorship, be clear about mentor/mentee relationships and develop specific skills and understanding in order to be a mentor. Who should attend?Employees will need to be working with a mentee.

Training outcomesThe course will consist of a range of taught sessions in which oral and written questions will be assessed. Employees reports will be collated for the portfolio and a number of observations will take place to observe mentors when working with their mentees.

DurationVariable dependent on pattern of study chosen.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

ProgressionProgression opportunities onto further training within a range of sectors, such as Level 3 Mentoring and a relevant Coaching qualification. The course will also support those who carry out a mentoring role within organisations.

Understanding the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice Award

What is the training about?It is a knowledge-only award for employees who are starting their journey as internal quality assurance practitioners or employees who need to know about internal quality assurance but who are not carrying out quality assurance themselves. It will cover the quality assurance of assessment in both competence-based assessment as well as vocationally-related taught programmes.

Who should attend?This training is for employees working in – or hoping to take up a role in – assessment and internal quality assurance. There are no formal entry requirements but an initial assessment will be carried out at the start of the training. Blended and/or distance learning options may be available.

Training outcomesTraining outcomes include: context and principles of internal quality assurance, how to plan internal quality assurance, techniques and criteria for monitoring the quality of assessment, how to maintain and improve the quality of assessment, how to manage information relevant to quality assurance and legal and good practice requirements.

DurationTwo, three hour workshops.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

ProgressionEmployees could progress to the Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice, or the level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice.

Teaching English (ESOL Continuing Professional Development) in the Lifelong Learning Sector University Diploma

Course Code: C0735 Fees: £1,125 Start Date: 30 September 2014 Level: 5

What is the training about?It will introduce employees to two main specialist units in developing English skills. The modules will look at literacy learning, literacy learners and literacy resources. Internet access is required to undertake this training.

Who should attend?Employees must have a teaching qualification such as a Certificate of Education, DTLLS or PGCE and have Level 2 or equivalent in English and maths. Employees will need to pass an assessment to show that they have English skills working at Level 3. An interview is required. Employees will need to confirm that they have a minimum of 50 hours teaching, across a range of levels.

Training outcomesOn completion of this training employees will become an ESOL specialist.

DurationEmployees will be required to attend seven full day workshops at staggered points throughout the training. The remainder of the training is delivered through online learning over one year.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

ProgressionThis training shows that you are a ESOL specialist which provides opportunities within a range of teaching environments. Employees may wish to use the credits to build towards a BA in Education.

PGCE Certificate in Education/Post Compulsory Education

Course Code: C0733 Annual Fees: £2,100 Start Date: 10 September 2014 Level: 6

What is the training about?Employees will be introduced to aspects of teaching and learning to enable employees to develop their work as a teacher, trainer or tutor.

Who should attend?It is suitable for employees interested in furthering their career in education, who have a degree at 2:2 or above, and have over 75 hours per year teaching experience in the post-compulsory sector. The Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) is suitable for employees who have Level 2 or equivalent in English and maths and a Level 3 or higher qualification in their subject specialism, and have a minimum of 75 hours per year teaching experience.

Training outcomesEmployees will have an understanding of all aspects of teaching and learning to enable them to improve their work as a teacher, trainer or tutor. This includes assessment, preparing resources, curriculum and lesson design, learning styles, the organisation of post-16 education, quality, evaluation systems and research skills.

DurationFive hours per week for two years. Employees will also have to attend two study days per year at the University of Bedfordshire, which is mandatory in order to achieve either award.

AssessmentAssessment is varied and continuous, and employees will work to a set of outcomes at either Cert Ed or PGCE level. Some modules are assignment based, while others require a portfolio of evidence to be built up. Additionally, there is assessment by observation of practical teaching, both in the workplace and in class.

ProgressionMA in Education or Foundation Degree in Teaching in Post-Compulsory Education.

What is the training about?This is for practitioners who assess the demonstration of competence in a work environment using a variety of assessment methods, which must include observation, examination of work products and questioning learners. Who should attend?Trainee Assessors will need to have experience and qualifications in the vocational area they wish to assess. They will also have access to at least two learners at a level below their own qualification or experience. An initial assessment will be carried out at the start of the programme. Experience and qualifications in a vocational area.

Training outcomesEmplyees will explore competence-based assessment techniques as well as those used in vocationally-related taught programmes.

The practical unit is based on experiential learning and involves building a portfolio of evidence from assessment activities carried out with learners.

IQA Assessment Award

What is the training about?The internal quality assurance of the assessment process from within a centre or organisation, by sample planning, monitoring and advising on the practice of assessors. This includes both the verification of competence-based qualifications and moderation of taught programmes in a learning environment. Who should attend?Trainee Internal Quality Assurance staff (IQAs) will need to have experience and qualifications in the vocational area they wish to work. They will also have access to at least two assessors in the Trainee IQA’s vocational area and be able to guide these assessors on the conduct of an assessment process.

Training outcomesThis Award consists of two units.The knowledge-based unit covers the principles and techniques of internal quality assurance of assessment in both competence-based assessment as well as those used in vocationally-related taught programmes. The practical unit is based on experiential learning and involves building a portfolio of evidence from quality assurance activities

Leading IQA of APP Certificate

What is the training about?For practitioners who lead the internal quality assurance process within a centre/organisation and have a responsibility for managing the quality of the assessment process, practice and the performance of assessors. They may also develop systems and lead on visits from outside agencies such as awarding organisations. Who should attend?Trainee Lead Internal Quality Assurance staff (Lead IQAs) will need to have experience and qualifications in the vocational area they wish to work. They will also have access to at least two assessors in the Trainee IQA’s vocational area, and be in a role managing a team in the conduct of an assessment process.
