Construction at Leicester College continues to develop and expand its training specialisms; working closely with employers to meet their training and apprenticeship needs.

The College is now one of the Country’s leading providers of Higher Apprenticeships in the Built Environment. Higher Apprenticeships enable staff within the industry to achieve university level qualifications through training in the workplace.

The Department has also successfully launched an Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Apprenticeship in 2013/14, which supports apprentices to train within a College specialist facility.

The College is exceptionally proud of its specialist training facilities and the expertise of staff who offer tuition and support both in College and in the workplace

Apprenticeships

An Apprenticeship is a work based training programme which allows employees to complement the skills learned and developed in the workplace with the theoretical knowledge gained at College.

Training outcomesOn completion employees will achieve:• a NVQ in their chosen occupation (NVQ Level 2 for

Intermediate Apprenticeships, NVQ Level 3 for Advanced Apprenticeships and NVQ Level 4/5 for Higher Apprenticeships)

AssessmentAssessment is undertaken in the workplace and at College. Employees should demonstrate competence across various work-based tasks and compile a portfolio of evidence.

Matthew Boylan and Muhammad Suleman are two electrical apprentices employed by the University of Leicester through Leicester College’s Apprenticeship Training Agency (ATA).

They are both enrolled on the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Electrical Installation and work within the Estates Department at the University.

Both Matthew and Muhammad complete the practical side of their apprenticeship at Leicester University.

Matthew said: “I’m lucky to be working in such a friendly environment and right now I’m on track to complete my advanced training. The service that I received from both the College and the University throughout my apprenticeship has far exceeded my expectations.”

What is the training about?This course is designed for employees in the construction and the Built Environment sector working across a broad range of areas. Examples of fields of employment: architecture, surveying and site management at junior technician level. Who should attend?Employment in vocational area is a pre-requisite. This course would benefit junior technicians employed in the construction industry.

Duration24 months.

ProgressionEmployees can progress on to higher level apprenticeships in Sustainable Construction and the Built Environment at HNC/HND level 5.

Building Engineering Services Higher Apprenticeship

Course Codes: C2991 Fees: 1Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 4

What is the training about?A higher apprenticeship will develop the employees skills in applying critical reasoning and analysis techniques to solve built environment and engineering problems. Employees will also develop their personal and business skills. Who should attend?Employees will need to attend an interview, be currently in employment and hold either a BTEC level 3 construction qualification, A levels, 80 UCAS points or an advanced level 3 apprenticeship.

Duration24 to 36 months.

ProgressionA Higher Apprenticeship will enable completing employees to register for Professional Status (Associate), top up to an honours degree, or progress to a NVQ 6. A Higher Apprenticeship will develop the employees’ skills in college and the workplace to manage and lead construction projects.

External Wall Insulation Intermediate Apprenticeship

Course Codes: C2443 Fees: 1Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?The External Wall Insulation system insulates the “hard to treat” or solid external walls from the outside of the property, meaning there are improvements to the buildings thermal performance, without major disruption to the inside of the property, the apprenticeship covers all areas of Thermal Performance of properties. Who should attend?Employment in the vocational trade area is a prerequisite for all employees.

DurationUp to 24 months, part-time.

ProgressionAfter successful completion of the External Wall Apprenticeship progression opportunities would include a plastering apprenticeship, or a construction contracting operations apprenticeship.

Building Studies Higher Apprenticeship

Course Code: C2990 Fees: 1 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 4

What is the training about?It has two pathways, construction and the built environment or building engineering services. Employees will develop skills in applying critical reasoning and analysis techniques to solve built environment and engineering problems.

Who should attend?Employees will need to be working in the industries, have a BTEC Level 3 construction qualification, A levels, 80 UCAS points or an Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship.

What is the training about?It provides a grounding in the use of AutoCAD, with add-on applications, to create, view, manage, plot or output, share and reuse accurate, information-rich drawings.

Who should attend?Architects, engineers, drafters, and other professionals involved with design using AutoCAD. An interview is required to ascertain suitability to successfully complete this training.

Training outcomesOnce completed the training will allow employees to: • use CAD hardware and operating systems• identify key components of the software relating

to the 2D drawing environment • use a range of viewing commands and set up the

drawing space • use drawing commands to produce shapes and the

software’s co-ordinate system to aid accurate drawing • hatch, text and simple dimensioning routines.

DurationOne evening per week, 6pm to 8pm for 36 weeks.

AssessmentExams and continuous assessment.

Computer Aided Design and Manufacture 2D Award

Course Code: C0369 Fees: £1,050 Start Date: 2 September 2014 Level: 3

What is the training about?It provides advanced knowledge in the use of AutoCAD, with add-on applications, to create, view, manage, plot or output, share and reuse accurate, information-rich drawings.

Who should attend?Architects, engineers, drafters, and other professionals involved with design use of AutoCAD, or those with previous experience of working with AutoCAD packages.

Training outcomesOnce completed the training will allow employees to: • use a layering system and different line type styles• define and use a system for grouping objects to form

blocks • produce isometric drawings within the 2D environment• define and use an adjustable co-ordinate system based on

user requirements• use complex dimensioning routines• use different drawing space• produce hard copies of drawings• make enquiries of an existing drawing and place reference

points• use a means of pre-command object selection in order to

carry out editing• change the properties of a number of drawn entities• edit blocks, symbols and hatched areas.

What is the training about?This training is ideal for employees in the building services industry who would like to progress to anj advanced level. It is a services programme providing a foundation to higher studies.

Who should attend?Employees require GCSE English grade C or equivalent (without this they will be asked to complete a Literacy test), plus one of the following:• Level 3 Edexcel National Diploma/NVQ/AVCE in a

related subject• A2 qualifications in a related subject• a relevant Access to Higher Education course.

Training outcomesThis course would benefit junior technicians or experienced practitioners/supervisors wanting togain formal professional qualifications. Employees should have a National Certificate or equivalent level qualification in their specialism, or have relevant industrial experience and be practising in this discipline to an equivalent level. The course provides a generic technician’s qualification giving a broad insight into the various building services professions.

What is the training about?Providing the underpinning knowledge and understanding required to operate as a qualified trades-person in the appropriate electrical discipline.

Management of and Inspection/Testing of Electrical Equipment City & Guilds

Course Code: C0381 Fees: £240 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 3

What is the training about?The training will enable delegates to manage and maintain portable appliances. It is based on the two key aspects of the Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment, which are:• the management of the PAT system (100)• practical inspection and testing of electrical equipment (200).

Who should attend?Delegates required to carry out PAT on equipment.

Training outcomesEnables delegates to competently carry out Portable Appliance Testing and instructs in the management of maintaining portable appliances and practical assessment of inspecting and testing electrical equipment.

DurationTwo days.

AssessmentContinuous assessment and exams.

Progression2381 16th Edition Wiring Regulations (course code A2233) is suitable for employees who hold a Level 2 electrical qualification.

Inspection/Testing of Electrical EquipmentCity & Guilds 2377

Course Code: C0377 Fees: £240 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 3

What is the training about?It will cover classes and types of equipment, frequency of tests and its assessment, assessing environment, housekeeping, disconnection, equipment condition, instrument: use/settings/assessing values, procedural requirements surrounding testing, types of tests and test procedures.

Who should attend?Delegates attending will require a basic understanding of electrical terminology and simple circuit theory as it is a level 3 qualification. Course tutor will confirm suitability. GCSE or equivalent in English is required.

Training outcomesEnables delegates to competently carry out Portable Appliance Testing of equipment.

DurationThe training is available as either one or two days. The one day training covers the Portable Appliance Testing 2377 200. The two day training includes both the 2377 100 and 200 Testing and Management elements.

What is the training about?It covers initial and periodic Inspection.

Who should attend?It is aimed at practising electricians who have not carried out inspection and testing since qualifying or require some update training before going on to other C&G qualifications.

Training outcomesIt intensive input of theory and practical knowledge, which includes: • visual inspection, • continuity of protective conductors and polarity, • continuity of ring final circuit and conductors, • insulation resistance, • protection by separation of circuits, • protection against “direct contact”, • earth fault loop impedance, • earth electrode resistance, • operation of residual current devices, and Certification.

What is the training about?It is a packaged assessment for CORGI registered installers who hold a current or expired (within 12 months of expiry date) CCN1, WAT 1, CEN 1, CKR 1, or HTR 1 certificate.

Who should attend?For gas safe-registered installers, this is mandatory training that needs to be renewed every five years to allow delegates to continue their Gas Safe registration.

What is the training about?Delegates who wish to gain accreditation to install unvented units, allowing them to self-certificate their installations, without the need for building control prior approval. Delegates are sent a self study pack prior to attending the training as the actual training is a presentation and demonstration.

Training outcomesRainwater harvesting and greywater recycling will become more prevalent with the introduction of maximum per head usage figures for new build properties as defined by Part G of the Building Regulations and the Code for Sustainable Homes. This training covers information required by qualified building services engineers or plumbers to install these systems and will include legal and safety issues and will enable installers to comply with the requirements of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Who should attend?No specific qualifications are required for undertaking this certificated training however delegates must be able to demonstrate appropriate experience and competency of working as a plumber.

Training outcomesPart of a suite of qualifications required to be recognised as a qualified plumber.

AssessmentAssessment is in three parts: Written - open book multiple choice question paper. Written - closed book multiple choice question paper. Practical - visual inspection.

Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning

Course Codes: C3075 Fees: £1,700Start Date: 2 September 2014 Level: 2

What is the training about?It allows employees to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps sector.

Who should attend?A positive attitude to learning and clear motivation to study. Evidence of appropriate level of practical ability/skills. Normally four GCSEs at grade D or E including English and maths, or a full level 1 qualification including English Functional Skills at level 1 are required. Employees without these qualifications who can demonstrate academic ability to succeed at level 2 will also be considered.
