Chambers Across the County Engage in Political Discussions

Pancakes & Politics with Eggs & IssuesFor the early bird political enthusiast

Utah Valley Chamber offers an Eggs & Issues forum every Saturday morning during the legislative session. Each week topics are selected and elected officials update chamber members and answer questions. In February during a discussion on Transportation in the state, several of the representatives and senators stated that construction is on sale, particularly large projects. Bids for the Utah County I-15 reconstruction came in so far under budget that many other projects were moved forward and will be completed up to four years ahead of schedule. This is particularly important for residents in North Utah County where roads are congested constantly. Utah Valley Chamber President Steve Densley organized the Eggs & Issues program three years ago to allow his members access to

their State Representatives in order to have a voice in the decisions being made on Capital Hill. Each week a crowd of around 80 people gather at the IHC facility in Provo.

American Fork Chamber also wanted to give their members a chance to meet on more local issues and so chamber executive, Debby Lauret, started Pancakes & Politics that meets at 9 AM at American Fork Hospital. Local representatives and senators gather at this breakfast to discuss current politics and answer concerns from constituents. Pancakes and Politics is held twice each legislative session, once at the beginning and once at the end.

In 2010, some weighty issues face our State elected officials, not the least of which is balancing a budget with a projected deficit of $700 million. From

an optional 12th grade for all high school students to a tobacco tax, ideas are being batted back and forth among lawmakers to find a way to deal with the repercussions of the recession.

“The legislature has been driving technology into the classrooms, and these very programs are now on the chopping block,” said Senator Howard Stevenson ( R).

Utah County Chambers of Commerce are standing up to advocate for their member businesses and remind legislators that Utah is poised for tremendous growth as long as the budget is balanced effectively without harming education or the state’s rating as the ‘Best Managed’ State in the U.S.

Full steam ahead

LehiWith two new ribbon cuttings in February,

the business community in Lehi City is growing stronger. Aldridge Chiropractic and Great Harvest Bread have both opened their doors. Mark Aldridge, of Aldridge Chiropractic, moved back to Utah in November from Virginia, with his wife and children was apprehensive about was

apprehensive about taking on the expenses of a new office. He found the solution in sharing an office with Dry Creek Chiropractic.

Porter Olsen, owner of the new Great Harvest Bread in Lehi is excited to be joining the Lehi community of business owners. Olsen and his wife also own the Orem Great Harvest.

Eagle MountainEagle Mountain City launched a new

ad campaign complete with billboards, t-shirts, commercials and a new logo to promote economic development in the City. Incorporated in 1996, Eagle Mountain City is designed to attract young energetic residents. Ad representatives focused the new strategy around the idea of a vibrant community that has a lot to offer. “Find yourself in Eagle Mountain” ads are now airing on local TV networks, featuring residents of the City and

their families doing everyday activities like playing football or biking or starting a business. The corporate video designed for aggressively seeking future businesses to build in the area is a strong depiction of the positive aspects of life in a growing planned community within 30 miles of two major cities. If you have ever thought that Eagle Mountain City was too far off the beaten path, this campaign asks you to think again.

Saratoga SpringsSaratoga Springs City has a new Mayor

and two newly elected City Council representatives who are aggressively seeking economic development opportunities for their city. Mayor Love and Council members Michael McOmber and Jim Miller all focused heavily during their campaigns on responsibly broadening the economic development in the city. In their first month in office the newly energized City Council has made great strides, reaching out to businesses that will not only improve the quality of life for residents of Saratoga Springs, but will also bring in valuable sales tax revenue.

“There are great things on the horizon and so much potential for Saratoga Springs. If you have not been to Saratoga Springs in the last year, you should check them out,” stated Councilman McOmber.

The current council plans to grow wisely by maintaining the quality of life they enjoy, while adding necessary commercial developments so residents can live, work, play, and SHOP in Saratoga Springs! In the coming months, Mayor Love and the City Council look forward to announcing some exciting new commercial developments to Saratoga Springs and our Lehi Area Chamber.

Porter Olsen and his wife, Jaada, celebrate the opening of their second Great Harvest Bread Co. location with Mayor Wilson of Lehi and Chamber board members. The Olsens also own the Orem Great Harvest store.

After many years of planning, Eagle Mountain City Mayor Heather Jackson cuts the ribbon on the new 1.2 million GPD sewer treatment plant in February. Former Mayor Don Richardson and other former council members joined the current council in celebrating the long-awaited addition to city infrastructure.

Eagle Mountain introduces a new logo for the city.

Steve Densley is the longest sitting Chamber President in the State of Utah with 26 years of service. He was born and raised in the state and graduated from Jordan High School where he was selected All American in both Football and Basketball. He attended BYU on a sports scholarship and graduated in 1970.

Steve has hosted an early morning and nightly TV Show for the past three years called Taking Care of Business and writes a weekly column for the Daily Herald now in its 15th year. He currently sits on the U.S. Chambers Institute of Organizational Management Board of Regents at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

In the fall of 2009, the Provo/Orem Chamber of Commerce where Steve served as President was renamed the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce and Steve has worked diligently to share the message that the UV Chamber will be a strong voice for Utah County businesses on a State level. He will be discussing these changes with us at our April BLT on Tuesday, April 6, 2010. (Location to be announced.)

The Lehi Area Chamber of Commerce commences their February BLT (Business at Lunch Time) held at the Texas Roadhouse in Lehi.

Conductor’s Corner

Polaroid Spotlight

The season of community celebrations will begin soon with spring projects and summer festivals. In Lehi the amazing Lehi Round Up events are all run by volunteer committees. The amount of hours and the Herculean efforts put in by these volunteers is truly admirable. The love of community and the joy of service continue to thrive in our area. Not only do “many hands make light work”, but working alongside neighbors and friends makes the festivals all the more fun. I love running the Pony Express Dutch Oven Cook off. The people are amazing and the gourmet food is pretty great too. This year we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express Trail and it’s going to be a blast.

With the current economic times,

cities are cutting back and relying on resident volunteers for community events. Saratoga Springs cancelled the annual Splash event last year and community volunteers came forward to take over the summer festival. Working with no budget they pulled together and put on quite a show. The Civic Events Committee in Saratoga Springs has continued to run events throughout the year and will host the Splash again this year.

There is no time like the present to dig in and get busy building your community and forgetting your own worries in accomplishing something great in your city. This may sound like a call to arms and I guess it is. As a working mother with young children, I often use the excuse of my busy life to keep me from

volunteering in the community, but no longer. Since I’ve decided to roll up my sleeves and ensure that the events and festivals I love about my city move forward, I’m sending the same challenge to all of you. Contact your city offices and get the names of event committee chairs or volunteer coordinators and get involved in bettering your community. We will all enjoy this summer more with a little help from each other.

In the corner of a business complex, tucked behind Del Taco on State Street, you’ll find sweet tooth nirvana.

Dippidee is much more than just a cupcake shop. It is “a place of sweet surprises.” Not the least of these surprises is what will be in the display cases. Dippidee has a few favorites that can be found year round, but most of their confections are unique and inspired by the day.

Owner, Marcee Kitchen, bakes new

delights all the time so you never know what you’ll find when you open the doors. I walked in Valentine’s weekend to cases of heart cookies and chocolate dipped strawberries, but just a few days later chocolate caramel rice crispy bars adorned the counter and a new array of treats filled the glass.

If you don’t find what you like they will make it for you, as long as you purchase at least six of the items. Have a craving for

German chocolate cupcakes? Call up and order at least six and the bakers will get started. Specialty cakes, novelty treats, and much more are available at this creative and delectable sweets shop.

“We have our favorites here all the time. Little Devils, brownies, sugar cookies and Heavenly Pieces are always available, but we also do special orders,” said Liz Worthen, manager of Dippidee.

Dippidee has been open for nearly

four years and is continually gaining a reputation for superb sweets with excellent ingredients. When she decided to opened the shop, Kitchen said her first order of business was to get permission to use “sacred family recipes” passed down from generation to generation and that has made all the difference.

All the sweets from the chocolate dipped bon-bons to the loaded Dippidee bar are made from scratch.

When asked if she used cake mixes, Marcee Kitchen stated, “Heavens no! I think I would be disowned.”

Next time you get a craving for something sweet or you’re looking for a unique gift, sure to be appreciated, stop by Dippidee.

Dippidee, 476 North 900 West, Ste. D, American Fork, UT 84003 801-756-4383, dippidee.blogspot.com.

Manager Liz Worthen will help you find the perfect treat at Dippidee’s on the border of Lehi and American Fork.

A Closer Look

Big D building up Utah CountyBig D Construction passionate about building

Utah County“If a project is big to you, it’s big to us,” said David

Lewis, business development manager at Big-D Construction’s Lindon Office. “No one can be as effective and efficient as we are—period.”

In 1967, Dee Livingood founded Big-D Construction and the big in Big-D came not only from his physical stature but also his character. The corporation has one clear mission, “To be the most sought after construction company in the business.” After more than 42 years of providing Design-Build, General Contracting and Construction Management services to customers from a wide variety of industries, Big-D has become one of the largest construction companies in the country. Big-D employs more than 600 associates in regional offices in Salt Lake City, Ogden and Lindon, Utah; Pleasanton, California; Phoenix, Arizona; and Jackson, Wyoming.

The Lindon office opened in 2005 and has exceeded expectations.

“Opening this office was a commitment of service for our clients in Utah County. BYU, IHC, and Nu Skin have all been great clients,” said Gifford Briggs, project development manager for Big-D Construction in Lindon.

Greg Fix, vice president of the Lindon Office, agreed, “We had never built a project for BYU before we opened this office in 2005. The way we know that Utah County responded is the 15 projects we have built for BYU since then.”

The Lindon office has seen many benefits at their location.

“Opening this office has allowed us to tap into the talent in Utah County such as the Construction Management graduates at BYU,” said Briggs.

Mining projects in Utah County have been some of the most challenging and revolutionizing ventures of the Lindon office.

“Working in the mining industry has enhanced our safety practices and decreased our EMR and incident rate. We hold the best safety rating in the state,” said Fix.

Even though construction has been one of the hardest hit industries in the national recession, officials at Big-D see a bright future for their company.

“There are a lot of people who want to build and now is the best time because construction is on sale. Big-D can help guide them through the entire process from concept to completion,” said Greg Fix.

Gifford Briggs jumped in to add, “We have proven we can serve the needs of our clients, no matter the size of the project. As Utah County grows we want to build it.”

Big-D is involved in the community. Whether its donating material and labor to build a handicap ramp for a boy who couldn’t get his wheelchair to the playground at his school, or judging contests for Construction Management teams or helping fund the Children’s Discovery Museum at Thanksgiving Point, they are involved and willing to help. Lehi Area Chamber of Commerce appreciates the support of Big-D Construction.

Good news for those who suffer from knee pain

Patients in need of total knee replacement surgery may now have the option of undergoing a less invasive procedure.

Utilizing tested technology, The Oxford® Knee is the first unicompartmental knee implant with features designed to glide freely

throughout the knee’s range of motion. And with smaller incisions and advanced technology, recovery time and discomfort for patients is

typically much lower.

The Oxford® Unicompartmental Knee procedure, performed by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Michael Callahan, is available at American Fork

Hospital to patients who meet certain health standards.

For more information on the Oxford® Knee procedure, call 801.855.3301.
