Lehi Family Week is a wonder-ful thing to celebrate. It gives us a chance to reflect on the bless-ings of life and the blessings of those around us. No matter where we live or how far from home we travel, we always know that some-one is waiting and praying for us. It really doesn’t matter if you have a large family, a small family, or don’t have a blood relative to be found. Someone somewhere does care for you. You can count on that!

It may be family, a neighbor, a friend, or someone across town. Each of us should take the time to share that kind of relationship with someone in our community. Both friends and family can bring peace of mind and feelings of love.

I would hope that every citizen

in our community and in sur-rounding communities will take the opportunity to attend the Lehi Family Week activities. They pro-vide a chance to strengthen the values we have and the blessing in our lives.

Let’s not forget that family is about a relationship, not a blood line. So take a neighbor and enjoy the wholesome activities that will be going on all week. Take a look at the schedule; you’re sure to find plenty to do and enjoy. Mem-ories are made up of the things we do and who we do them with, not the things we forgot to do or wish we had done.

Come to all the events and tell them you are a guest of the mayor. Let’s love more, forgive more, do more, appreciate what we have, stop worrying about

what we want, and be grateful that we have a community who cares about each other and our families.

Gratefully your Mayor,Bert Wilson

The Novotne, Russon and Southam families have been chosen as Lehi Family Week’s 2013 Outstanding Families. Each year Lehi Family Week spotlights families who have been nominated by people in the community who believe these families to be extraordinary and worthy of special recognition. The nominations are considered by the Lehi Family Week committee and three families are chosen to be recognized.

This year’s Outstanding Families will be honored at Lehi Family Week’s kick-off event on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Willowcreek Middle School Auditorium, 2275 W. 300 North, Lehi. Guest speaker at the event will be Hilary Weeks. Admission is free; seating is first come, first served.

To nominate a family to be recognized during the 2014 Lehi Family Week, visit www.lehi-ut.gov/discover/family-week for a nomination form.

Lehi Family Week 2013 Outstanding Families

Once a month, the children and grandchil-dren of Stan and Teresa Russon gather at the Russon home for a Family Home Evening so cousins, aunts and uncles, fathers and mothers and grandmas and grandpas will continue to be close.

“It gets to kind of a rowdy affair for a Sunday night, but I would rather put up with that than have any ill will among them,” Stan said. “We hope that in case of any problems in any home that all of us are behind them. We care for one another.”

This family unity is important to the Russons, who have been married for 63 years and have six children, 22 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Stan was born in Lehi in 1921 and Teresa was born in the Mormon Colonies in Mexico in 1923. Stan served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Arkansas and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Korea and the Philippines. He See RUSSON on page 10

served as bishop of the Lehi 4th Ward from 1977 to 1983. Teresa served an LDS mission to Mexico City and speaks Spanish fluently. After their marriage in 1950, the Russons lived in Arizona for about 15 years before moving to Lehi.

As an artist, Stan made a living working with architects and making commercial renderings of buildings. He also worked as a sign painter; at one time, as people drove down Lehi’s Main Street, half of the store signs they saw were painted by Stan. Each year he painted signs advertising the local rodeo and he painted the original picture from which the bronze “Bucking Cowboy” at the roundabout on 500 West and Main Street was designed. He once repainted the Lehi Roller Mill’s

Turkey and Peacock by suspending a chair from pulleys, then asking his brother to raise and lower him by pulling ropes through the pulleys with a tractor.

In 2005, he assisted his grandson Danny Russon on Danny’s Eagle Scout project at the Hutchings Mu-seum. The two painted the prehis-toric mural in the fossil room.

Teresa raised her children, mak-ing sure they gained talents such as playing the piano, gardening, cook-ing, canning and sewing. All three of her daughters now teach piano les-sons and all three are seamstresses and sing.

She said her husband Stan had woodworking equipment at home while their sons were young and the boys were constantly creating things with the machines. This taught them to be creative and use their own

ingenuity, she said, adding that all three of their sons graduated as engineers.

Together, Stan and Teresa have completed four senior missions for the LDS Church, serving in Puerto Rico, Chile, Switzerland and New Jersey. They continue to love and support neighbors, family and friends.

A starring role in a movie about the struggle of Utah’s handcart pioneers has given Lehi resident Darin Southam and his wife Michelle an opportunity to encourage and teach the youth of today.

An actor who has appeared in Disney movies for televi-sion as well as the Discovery Channel’s series “I Shouldn’t Be Alive,” Darin portrayed pioneer Ephraim Hanks in the 2013 movie “Ephraim’s Rescue,” which told the story of the Martin Handcart Company. Following that role, the South-ams began receiving requests to speak at youth confer-ences and firesides, an opportunity they enthusiastically embraced. The Lehi couple now volunteers their time to speak to youth and spread their message to be yourself and work to make the good things in life popular instead of the bad things.

“If you’re lucky enough to be in the public eye, I think you have the obligation to be a positive influence, not a negative one,” Michelle said.

Darin is passionate about speaking to youth, perhaps even more so than pursuing his acting career. “Just be-cause I’m in a movie, that doesn’t make me special, but Michelle, Emery, Bailey, Darin and

it does make me special if I’m educating and telling people to find that courage to be good, to sit next to that person that has no friends,” he said.

A graduate of the University of Utah in speech com-munication, Darin has been acting since appearing in his first play in seventh grade. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus of Christ Latter-Day Saints in El Salva-dor and began appearing in films two years after return-ing home from his mission. Currently he produces films for Dowdle Folk Art as well as other businesses and also sells real estate.

Michelle graduated from college having studied visual arts and Spanish and served an LDS mission in Costa Rica. She has worked as a freelance artist and is now a full-time stay-at-home mom to their three children: Bai-ley, 7, Emery, 4, and Jonah, 1. She still enjoys painting, working with oils and watercolors.

“I love that you can excel in the home and I love creat-ing that wonderful positive environment for my kids, a learning environment,” Michelle said. She utilizes her creative skills at her oldest daughter’s school once a

week as a volunteer art teacher. For both Michelle and Darin, teaching their children to

be creative is a priority. Children today constantly have access to electronic devices, and while technology is good and should be learned, children need to spend time playing and imagining on their own. “I think some-times we don’t allow that to happen,” Darin said.

Reading is also an important part of family life. An avid reader who usually has about three different books going, Michelle said she will often retell the best stories she has read to her children at bedtime, promising them that they can read the book themselves when they are older. “I just think you can’t read to your kids enough and spend enough time with them,” she said.

Darin said he hopes to see his acting opportunities ex-pand in the future not only for his career’s sake, but also so he can continue to be a good role model for youth.

“We just really want to strengthen their testimony and their relationship with their Heavenly Father,” Michelle said. “They need that guidance so much. They need good people in the media and they need what is right to be popular.”

Joe Novotne enjoyed serving as a military police officer in the U.S. Army. After leaving the service, however, he felt like there was a greater purpose in store for his life.

Joe now serves as pastor of the Adventure Ameri-can Fork Church, a position he has held for about nine years. There, with support from his wife Greta and their three children, he ministers to the people of northern Utah County, overseeing services and programs such as Financial Peace seminars, com-munity events and assistance for the needy.

A Colorado native, Joe spent four years serving in Germany after joining the Army. When he left the Army, Joe decided to go to school and eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in Christian ministries and a master’s degree in family counseling and min-istry. “I really just committed my life to the Lord and to whatever he wanted me to do at that time,” he said.

When Joe had finished school, the Novotnes moved to Colorado where he served as an associ-ate pastor for a Denver congregation. After spending

several years there, the family had an opportunity to come to Utah. “We felt like God had called us out here,” Joe said. The family moved to Sandy in 1995 and after spending time serving in another church position, Joe became pastor of the American Fork congregation. The family has called Lehi home for the past five years.

Joe has an additional full-time job as a chaplain with Bristol Hospice where he assists veterans and others who are ill and dying. “It’s amazing that he does this job that he does,” Greta said of her husband. “He enjoys working with families, he enjoys working with people, and he’s good at what he does.”

Greta has also worked in her church in various capacities over the years, helping with women’s Bible studies, children’s ministries and in the nursery. At home, she has spent a great deal of time working with her own children as she has home schooled them from the time they were very young. Her oldest daugh-ter Sarah is now 19, and their sons Jacob and Mat-thew are 16 and 9.

“When we had our kids, I just wanted to be home with

them,” Greta said. She had earned a college degree in elementary education and the family had friends who were homeschooling their children. “They were amaz-ing people and amazing kids,” she said. “I thought, ‘I’ll give it a try, and then I just loved it.”

Home schooling brought a greater unity to her child-ren and greater opportunities for family time, she said. It also provides flexibility to do more as a family when opportunities arise, such as taking vacations together.

Family time is important to the Novotnes. They spend time praying together and for each other and making connections with each other daily. “For us dinner time is important. We eat together and have that time where we can stop and just connect a little bit with each other,” Greta said.

“I think our relationship with the Lord, trying to teach that and model that to our kids helps us be closer as a family,” Joe said.

Each Saturday, the Adventure American Fork Church holds an event from 10 a.m. to noon called Jesus Feeds. Working in conjunction with the Utah Food Bank, the church distributes food to whoever needs it. The church is located at 55 E. 400 N. in American Fork.

Two hundred pounds of fudge were recently donated by a Lehi business to members of the U.S. military serv-ing overseas, and another nearly 400 pounds will soon follow.

The Fudge for Troops campaign is just one way that Rocky Moun-tain Chocolate Factory has become involved in the community since opening in the Outlets at Traverse Mountain one year ago. For every pound of fudge purchased during the month of July, the store’s owners pledged to send a pound of fudge to soldiers overseas. The store sold 592 pounds of fudge that month and will provide that much fudge to the Blue Star Mothers of America organiza-tion, which will ship the fudge as part of care packages for soldiers. The first 200 pounds of fudge was sent out earlier in November.

Allie Humphrey, co-owner of the Lehi Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory location with her fiance Matt Canaday, said they saw it as an op-portunity to support the troops and thank them for their efforts. “It’s hard for them to get sweets over there. Fudge is almost like a delicacy,” Humphrey said. “As long as there’s troops over there, we’ll do it every year.”

Humphrey and Canaday have also supported local schools with coupons and other donations since opening their doors as well as donated to the Lehi Legacy Center. They quickly became involved with organizations such as the Lehi Area Chamber of Commerce, North Utah County Women in Business and the Saratoga Springs Business Alliance.

“We wanted to get involved, we wanted to meet new people, we were new to the area,” Humphrey said. “It’s nice feeling like a part of the com-munity. We want to be here for a long time and so we want to build those ties.”

In November of 1963, Connie Nielsen changed her scarf shop on Lehi Main Street into a bridal store, and “This and That” was born. Though her scarf business had thrived for many years, with sales reps all across the western United States, the fashion trends were changing and she knew she had to as well.

Now, fifty years later, her store is called “Bridal Center” and Connie is still going strong in the same location. There are no “cookie-cutter” gowns here, just gowns inspired by the world’s top designers. In addition to their stunning bridal dresses, they also specialize in dresses for all special occasions, such as proms, and cater especially to those who want a modest look. They make sure to comply with the dress codes of all local schools, and provide truly one-of-a-kind dresses.

In 1997, Connie was awarded the Businesswoman of the Year award by the Provo Chamber of Commerce for her work at her bridal store. According to Con-nie, “The best part about the business is the clients, how we edify them and how pretty they look.”

Today, they have clients that visit them from all across the United States and even from other countries in addition to their thriving local customer base. To thank their customers and to commemorate 50 years in business, they are holding an open house at the Lehi location from Nov 21st-23rd, and offering customers a variety of special promotions.

Humphrey and Canaday came to Utah from the Midwest. Both are from Kansas City, Mo., and attended school at Missouri Western State University. It was there that Humphrey took an entrepreneurship class designed to help students go straight from graduation to owning their own business. Students in the class had the opportunity to earn a shot at owning their own Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory franchise through writing a business plan and making presentations to a judging panel. Humphrey was chosen as one of three students to receive a franchise opportunity.

She and Canaday were operating a Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory store in Omaha, Neb., when Ste-ven L. Craig, CEO of Craig Realty Group, approached Humphrey and told her about the opportunity to open a Rocky Mountain location in CRG’s new development: the Outlets at Traverse Mountain. After operating in Omaha for a year, they sold that store and opened their doors in Lehi in November of 2012.

Canaday said he was glad the business could make a positive impact so soon after opening. With no family in

Utah, organizations like the chamber of commerce have been a great help in getting the business’s name out into the community.

“With there being so many Rocky Mountain Choco-late Factories in the area, we kind of wanted to stand out,” Canaday said.

The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory at the Out-lets at Traverse Mountain offers 18 different kinds of caramel apples year-round along with a large variety of bulk chocolates and ice cream. Gifts such as boxed chocolates and seasonal items are also available. All of their caramel and fudge is handmade on location, and customers are invited to watch as the fudge is created.

Singer and songwriter Hilary Weeks will be the featured speaker and performer at a concert kicking off the 2013 Lehi Family Week celebration on Sunday, Nov. 24.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Willowcreek Middle School Auditorium, 2275 W. 300 North, Lehi. Admission is free; seating is first come, first served. Arrive early for best seating. The families chosen to be honored during Lehi Family Week will be recognized at the event as well.

Raised in Alaska, Hilary Weeks grew up carefree and introspective. The forests, streams and inlets of her Anchorage home offered a wealth of opportunities for not only exploring but for quiet reflection as well.

“Growing up I spent a lot of time in the forest next to our house,” Hilary said. “It overlooked the ocean and often I would see whales out in the distance. It is still one of my favorite places on Earth. I could go there to be alone and think and pray and try to figure out life. It was my own secret spot where I could commune with Heaven.”

Such communion has always been a guiding theme in Hilary’s life - and music. After finishing her first song at the age of 14, she found her favorite topics to write about were those devoted to the Gospel. But becom-ing a bestselling, inspirational singer/songwriter was never something she planned.

“If someone had told me after I wrote my first song that I would someday release multiple CDs I wouldn’t have believed them,” she said. “And if they had told me that I would sing those songs in front of thousands of people, I would have run. I never had dreams or plans of becoming a singer or songwriter. I just liked music. I loved it. It was just that simple.”

But one simple thing led to another, and her song “He Hears Me” was recorded and included on the 1993 Especially for Youth album. Three years later Hilary released her solo debut album, “He Hears Me,” for which she was awarded Inspirational Album of the Year by the Faith Centered Music Association. Her second album, “Lead Me Home,” followed in 1999. And in 2000, Hilary received Pearl Awards for Inspirational Album of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. Beginning with her first solo album release in 1996, Hilary has released nine solo albums.

Hilary became an author in 2009 when she wrote her first book, “Believe in What You’re Doing, Believe in Who You Are.” Her most recent book, “Bedtime and See HILLARY WEEKS on page 19

Naptime and Bedtime and Naptime,” features her now infamous Time Out for Women parodies.

The release of her latest album, “Every Step,” brought new success and a new horizon for her music. In Octo-ber 2011, Hilary became the first Latter-day Saint artist to break the top 10 on the Current Contemporary Christian Albums Billboard list. “Every Step” also hit 102 on the top 200 Billboard, and was the number one New Artist Album on both the National Indie and Mountain Region charts on its debut week. Her passion is to sing of Jesus Christ and use music as a means to connect with Him. And in spite of all the accolades and success, her most beloved mo-ments are those spent with her family.

“I love being with my family,” Hilary said. “They are the best thing in my life. I have just been so incredibly blessed. And in addition to a happy, healthy family, some-how, through encouragement of wonderful friends, support of a loving family, and guidance from a patient Heavenly Father, my road has also taken me on an incredible musi-cal journey.”

Hilary, her husband Tim, and their four daughters live in Utah.

As president of the Lehi Area Chamber of Commerce, I have the opportunity to visit and work with local business owners in the area and I consider many of them my friends. With this in mind, I would like to talk briefly about supporting our local busi-ness leaders through shopping locally.

When we shop local, more of our money stays in our communi-ty and helps support the libraries, recreation centers, local parks and other amenities that make the Lehi area a great place to live.

When we shop local, we are helping to support locally owned business including retail loca-tions, service providers and farms. As we strengthen our local business base, our community becomes stronger as a whole. This lessens the effects of a weak national economy and fewer busi-nesses close their doors when times are hard.

When more money stays in the local economy, we are bet-ter able to assist local nonprofit organizations that rely on our support. Nonprofit organizations, which provide valuable services and meet a variety of needs in our local communities, receive an average of 250 percent more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses.

Perhaps most importantly, local businesses are owned by local people who live in our community. They are less likely to leave and are more invested in our com-munity’s future. Many have lived in the Lehi area for generations. Their children attend local schools and work for local employers. When we support them with our business, we are supporting our neighbors and friends.

I realize that we cannot always buy everything locally, but I en-courage us to support our local business community whenever possible. Let’s do our part to help keep the Lehi area economy strong.

I encourage residents to make time to enjoy and participate in the activities that Lehi Family Week has to offer. This is a good opportunity to spend time with family and friends. For more infor-mation on the upcoming events and activities, visit: http://www.lehi-ut.gov/discover/family-week.

Fifty-six percent of Americans now own a smart-phone. Consumers with smartphones that make mo-bile payments report that convenience is the number one benefit. As mobile wallet services focus less on signing up new people, and more on getting consum-ers and merchants to use their mobile wallet, mobile payment use will increase. One way mobile wallet services encourage people to use their mobile wallet is by providing a guaranteed way for people to save money with mobile payments. WingCash, a local Lehi-based mobile wallet service, provides a platform for consumers to save money while also promoting local businesses. Consumers can purchase or receive elec-tronic gift card (eGift card) packages from participat-ing businesses that includes guaranteed redeemable value at designated business locations. Consumers save money when they purchase a large package of eGift cards for a smaller price.

Smartphones play an important role in the daily lives of many Americans. From the Pew Research, 29% of cell owners describe their cell phone as “something they can’t imagine living without.” Today, many people carry their smartphone and numerous plastic payment cards, gift cards, and other cards. And sometimes we forget to bring the very plastic card(s) we need. Mobile wallets can make life easier. And with Wing-Cash, consumers can receive and store eGift cards in a mobile wallet. It’s free to create a WingCash wallet. And it’s easy for WingCash members to spend their eGift cards at participating businesses. Once a person creates a free WingCash wallet, that person can add cash to his wallet from his or her financial institution; and add eGift cards from participating retailers.

Consumers want mobile payments to be conve-nient. According to Cellular News, 30 October 2013, “91.6% of survey respondents that use mobile pay-ments indicated that ease of use is the greatest ben-efit.” The survey was conducted by the Credit Union National Association, and included 1,046 people.

In addition to convenience, people using a Wing-Cash mobile wallet also enjoy features such as real-time payments, and reliable transactions to people or businesses. But despite the convenience of mobile payments, many people are concerned about the security of mobile payments. People don’t want to feel like they’re sacrificing security for convenience. That said, educating the consumer about how security works within the WingCash wallet is simple. A member never needs to enter or store any bank account infor-mation inside the wallet. And no payment card infor-mation is stored in the WingCash wallet either. Wing-Cash uses a high level encryption on the network too so all transactions are safe and secure.

In a recent article regarding mobile payments, author Rajiv Bathia writes, “Local context is key. Increasingly connected consumers demand personalized services and value in terms and convenience and ease of use” (Putting Consumer Demands First, 6 November 2013). Businesses on the WingCash network can send out free promotional eGift cards to consumers that can be redeemed dollar for dollar at their business. Individual WingCash Members may also purchase or receive combined promotional packages that include eGift cards from multiple, well-known local businesses.

One WingCash Business Member sent out eGift cards via email to hundreds of prospective customers inviting them to come into the store and spend their eGift cards. As a result, within five days, 10% of those customers that received their free eGift cards came into the store and made a purchase. That’s a homerun for the consumer, the business, and for WingCash. Sign Up for WingCash is free at www.wingcash.com. Hundreds of local businesses trust WingCash transac-tions to be safe and secure. You can too. Start saving money today - and please take a look at the WingCash promotional package included on page 5 within this magazine.

Dr. Jon Burnett cares about kids. It may have started when he worked for the Boy Scouts while at the University of Utah, or the summer he was a Cub Scout day camp director. It could have been when he was a substitute teacher for kindergarten through 12th graders – the year he was preparing to go to medical school. He is the dad to four kids now – and that sealed the deal!

If you are a parent or about to become one, please call to schedule a FREE consultation with Dr. Burnett. Parents are given the opportunity to meet the doctor, see the clinic and feel more prepared to choose a pediatrician.

Preventing the sting of winter, tips to stay safe, healthy & active this winter

The leaves have changed and the temperatures are dropping. Winter time is coming fast. While this means holidays, snow, and fun, it also means that cold and flu season is just around the corner. Here are a few tips to help your family stay healthy and safe this winter.

1. Keep your hands clean- Hand washing is prob-ably the easiest and most effective way to prevent spreading illness. Make sure everyone in the family is practicing good hand washing by getting the hands good and wet in warm water, scrubbing the hands well with plenty of soap). Remember, germs are anywhere and everywhere, so make sure to wash your hands frequently. Germs are the one thing that we want to teach children NOT to share.

2. Get flu shots – While many people will recover from the flu on their own, for others it can lead to hos-pitalization or it can even be life-threatening. While we may hear a lot of conflicting information (and misinfor-mation) in the media and online about vaccines, over-all vaccines are a safe and effective way to prevent illness. The American Academy of Pediatrics is a great resource for information: www2.aap.org/immunization

3. Plan time for play and exercise – Don’t let the winter months keep you trapped on the sofa in front of the TV. Find a winter activity that the whole family can enjoy. Dress warm and stay safe!

4. Eat healthy. Long gone are the summer fruits, but winter brings oranges, tangerines and

pears and many vitamin-packed root vegetables. Good nutrition is essential to battle germs and boost energy.

5. Make sure furnaces and detectors are ready to go - Check the owner’s manual for your furnace and make sure that all annual safety checks have be done before the deep cold comes.

6. Get plenty of sleep – Our bodies need sleep to stay healthy and fight off infection. Adults should be getting between 7-8 hours of sleep at night. School age children should be getting between 9-11 hours.

For more healthy winter ideas, we invite you to speak with your pediatrician. To find a pediatrician near you please visit IntermountainMedicalGroup.org

Jonathan Burnett, M.D., is a pediatrician caring for children at Intermountain North Valley Pediatrics in American Fork.

There’s a scripture that says, “... by small and simple things are great things brought to pass,” and as I look back over the past 13 years, I can see that we have a great Lehi City legacy. Our city stands for something amazing and that is the family. We know that strong families constitute strong communities. We also know that we have established a great tradition of celebrating family unity and dedication which is reflected in our won-derful city. We have dedicated the week of Thanksgiving every year for the past 13 years as a time to focus on and show gratitude for the family and all it represents. Here is the list of speakers who have shared in our Grand City Celebration over the years.

2001 - Patti and LaVell Edwards2002 – Kenneth Cope2003 - John Bytheway2004 – Jericho Road2005 – Brad Wilcox

2006 - One Clear Voice, Steven and Janice Kapp Perry2007 – John Bytheway

2008 - Jericho Road2009 - BYU Young Ambassadors

2010 - Joshua Creek2011 – Richard and Linda Eyre

2012 – Vocal Point2013 – Hilary Weeks

It just takes a few who believe in something as foundational as the family to affect a community for the better. As Lehi Family Week committee chair for the past three years, I invite you to recommit your time and energy to strengthening your family and encouraging your neighbors and friends to do the same. You will be amazed by the results. We hope to see you on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Willowcreek Middle School.
