Locate medial epicondyle

Slide distally to the joint space

Medial meniscus can

be palpated just

above the edge of

the medial tibial

plateau with medial

rotation of knee

Lateral meniscus is

difficult to access

tali

Place finger b/w

these points

Plantar Calcaneonavicular ligament (Spring lig.) Passively invert the

foot Locate

sustentaculum tali and navicular tubercle

Palpating b/w these bony landmarks

Page 8: Leg&Foot 4

Extensor retinacula• Supine

• Ask pt. to dorsiflex his ankle and extend his toes

• Palpate an inch proximal to the medial malleolus for the broad fibers of the sup. extensor retinaculum

• Locate the inferior extensor retinaculum by moving distally to the level of the malleouls

Page 9: Leg&Foot 4

Peroneal retinacula

• Ask pt. to evert

his foot

• Locate the

peroneal tendons

b/w the lateral

malleouls and

lateral calcaneus

Page 10: Leg&Foot 4

Flexor retinaculum

• Ask pt. to dorsiflex and invert the foot

• Locate medial malleouls and medial side of the calcaneus

Page 11: Leg&Foot 4

Plantar aponeurosis

• Seated or supine

• Crossing the ball of the foot,

draw an imaginary triangle

extending down to the heel

• Within this triangle, explore

the superficial layers of

tissue along the sole of the

foot

Calcaneal bursae Impalable

Can be thick or

imflamed from tight

shoes and,

especially, from

high heels
