Fiber Information Meeting Friday at Green Isle City HallInterested in learning more

about the latest version of a plan to bring high-speed Inter-net, telephone and TV service via a fiber optic line to Sibley county? An information meet-ing Friday (March 21, 10 a.m.) at Green Isle city Hall should provide plenty of answers.The meeting is designed to

be a general information meet-ing. Organizers of the proposal plan to present the project, talk about the financing mechanism cities and townships are being asked to participate in. The pro-posed timeline will also be pre-sented. There will also be time for questions and answers.The latest plan carries a $55

million price tag, $15 million less than the effort that got started in 2008.Participation from 10 cit-

ies and 21 townships will be sought for the 650-square-mile project.The RS (Renville-Sibley) Fi-

ber cooperative Board, a pri-vate cooperative formed in late-2012 to represent rural Sibley county, will own and operate the fiber to the residential and

farm network. The cooperative will use a $15 million loan to attract an additional $40 mil-lion in financing, said Mark Erickson, winthrop’s city ad-ministrator and economic de-velopment director.In addition, interest on the loan

will not accrue as fast as the revenue bond financing, a fact will save the project millions of dollars over its lifespan.“The old financing plans called

for interest to accrue at a much faster rate,” Erickson said.Pledge cards are being sent to

potential subscribers. During a two-year marketing period (2010-12), the project received 4,300 signed pledge cards in support of the fiber network. Under the revised business plan only 3,300 customers are needed for the project to break even.with enough pledges from

home and business owners, formal support from the 10 city councils and 21 township boards will be sought.Green Isle city Hall is at 310

holding its Seventh Annual Spring Fling Benefit Dinner & Fund-raiser April 12 at the car-ibou Gun club in Le Sueur.The guest speaker at the ben-

efit is Al Batt, a writer, speaker, storyteller, humorist and birder.Batt writes four weekly hu-

mor and nature columns for many newspapers including several in our area, and does a show three times per week about nature on a number of ra-dio stations. Mn/DOT Might Sell Shakopee Land Near 169, CR 69 CrossingThe Minnesota Department

of Transportation (Mn/DOT) wants to sell the city of Sha-kopee 28 acres just east of the intersection of Highway 169 and county Road 69. The city is interested in buying the land.So all that stands between the

offer and consummation of the sale is an agreeable price.Mn/DOT is offering the city

the right of first refusal on buy-ing the property for approxi-mately $1.02 million ($37,041 per acre. The land is appraised at almost $85,000 an acre), the Shakopee Valley News recently reported.city Engineer Bruce Loney

said the offer represents a rare opportunity. The city would likely use the land -- extra land from the development of Shakopee’s southern Highway 169 bypass opened in the mid-1990s -- for development and a permanent extension of Vier-ling Drive, a road that generally runs parallel to Highway 169 on the north side of the highway.Mn/DOT will sell the land on

the open market if Shakopee declines the offer.
