Legalization of abortion in Costa Rica for rape victims

Having the same agreement about abortion is almost impossible. There

is a wide variety of opinions accepting or denying it according to each specific

situation. Some people think that the abortion is allowed when the mother`s

health is compromised; others think that abortion is always wrong. According to

Merriam Webster Dictionary abortion is defined as the termination of a

pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death

of the embryo or fetus. (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary).

The most common reasons for abortion are: Mother`s mental health,

pregnancy is the result of a crime, rape or incest, child would have an

unacceptable quality of life or as a matter of a government policy. (BBC news

website) Even with those reasons some people think that abortion will never be

accepted in our society; others think that it will be acceptable if some of these

    reasons happens.

Those who are supporting the abortion argue that, in the first trimester,

the fetus cannot exist independent of the mother, and because of that it is not a

violation of a human life. Others say that in case of rape the physiological harm

of the women would last forever, so they support abortion claiming that is a safe

medical procedure. If it is performed under proper medical, abortion will be an

extremely safe procedure. In the United States fewer than one percent of the

population who practice abortion experience a major complication (Gold RB,

Henshaw SK and Lindberg LD, 1990), but on the other hand women who

practice abortion performed by incapacitated doctors or without any proper

hygiene are one of the estimated 68,000 women worldwide that die each year

    (World Health Organization, 2005).

Abortion is the act of taking human life. This is the common opinion of the

people who are against abortion. In medical terms, life begins since the

conception. Keith L. Moore, who is a world-renowned embryologist, establishes

Development begins with fertilization, the process by which the male gamete,

the sperm, and the female gamete, the oocyte, unite to give rise to a zygote

(2006). Even if it is performed in the first semester of the pregnancy, there is

life, so it is an act of killing a human.

Other argument against abortion is the adoption, if pregnancy had been

an act of rape, and the mother does not want the baby, it is a good option to

consider. According to the U.S. State Department, north-American families

adopted more than 9,000 children in 2011; so the excuse of he or she is going

to be an unwanted child it is not a real excuse. Also with abortion medical

complications will appear on women later in life.Abortion increases the risk

ofbreast cancer, the incidence ofinfertility,so the possibility of having a child is

decrease; increases the chance of premature birth in after born children,

resulting in several injuries likecerebral palsy.

The people who believe in God use vesicles of the Bible to argue against

the abortion, they call them premises. The first premise is that is wrong to

murder a human life. It will be founded in Matthew 19:18, Then he said to Him,

Which ones? And Jesus said, You shall not commit murder; you shall not

commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness According

to this vesicle abortion is a clear murdering of a human life. The second premise

is that the unborn is person. In medical terms, life begins since fertilization; in

religious terms, a vesicle on Jeremiah 1:15 said: Before l formed you in the

womb l knew you, and before you were born l consecrated you; l haveappointed you a prophet to the nations. That means that God had thought in

the person even before the fertilization, that he has a purpose in his or her life.

That is why abortion as the act of murdering a person is morally and religiously

    wrong.

Finally, in Costa Rica as a religious country, it is complicated the abortion

to be legalized, the church has many influences in the all the governmental

system and they are not going to allow by any way the legalization of it.

Obviously, there are people who supports abortion but they are minority

compared with church. In case of the pregnancy be the result of a rape, there

are options as adoption or a child care center that are better compared with the

negative effects that the woman might have if the abortion were performed, as

    medical complications.
