Compared wi th convent iona l nav igat ion l ight s , Se r ie s 65 se t s new s tandards in te rms of e ff i c i ency, l i f e t ime, cos t e ffec t i veness and ma intenance .

Long lifetime = minimum maintenance •Depending on the ambient temperature, the LEDs have a lifetime of up to 110,000 hours per system. Cost-intensive maintenance is kept to a minimum.

Lower energy consumption is environmentally •friendly and saves money Series 65 consumes down to 2 W. That represents a reduction of up to 95% in comparison with conventional incandescent light bulbs.

Variable wide range voltage input •For international mains voltages from 115 V to 230 V AC (+-20%), 50/60 Hz

Integrated lightning protection •Indirect lightning strikes or overvoltage do not impact on performance.

High level of reliability •The main and the back-up systems are compactly integrated into one lantern, but galvanically decoupled from each other.

Optimized thermal management •The effective cooling in the compact housing minimizes the ef-fect of outdoor temperatures on the lifetime of the LED system.

Simple upgrade •Easy upgrades plus parallel monitoring of LED and conventional lights using aqua signal’s adapted control panel.

Technical data

The Bremen lighting specialist, aqua signal, will be launching an LED navigation light for commercial

shipping on the market. Compared with conventional navigation lights, the state-of-the-art Series

65 LED navigation light sets brand new standards in terms of efficiency, lifetime, cost effectiveness

and maintenance.

After providing LED solutions for offshore facilities, land-based structures and leisure craft, in launching Series

65 aqua signal is applying its innovative LED skills for the first time in the very challenging merchant marine

sector. The long-established Bremen firm detected demand for LED navigation lights from shipping companies

and shipyards at an early stage. It has put these requirements, together with its many years of experience in

providing lighting solutions for commercial shipbuilding, to good use by turning this technologically challenging

development into reality. By taking this step, aqua signal is now one of the very few manufacturers to have

innovative LED applications for commercial shipping in their product range and can thus offer the advantages of

this forward-looking technology.

Long lifetime, low maintenance

Depending on the surrounding temperature, the lifetime of LED navigation lights is more than 100,000 hours.

Complex and cost-intensive maintenance is kept to a minimum and there is also no need to carry stocks of

spare parts for Series 65 lights. Furthermore LED lights are characterized by extremely low electricity

consumption. Power consumption is less than 10 W. Compared with the conventional light bulb version, that

represents a reduction of 85 percent. Series 65 LED lights can be used with all standard international mains

voltages and have ample surge protection. Indirect lightning strikes or power surges caused by mains power

failures do not impact on performance.

Performance readiness that can be controlled

The Series 65 navigation light is a constituent part of a system that also includes a monitoring panel. This

enables all functions to be controlled centrally from the bridge. For example the monitoring panel reports a

defect in the light and provides the opportunity to switch over rapidly to the back-up system. The main and

back-up systems are integrated compactly into the light and are dc-decoupled from each other. What happens

over the lifetime of the light is monitored with the aid of an integrated microcontroller. Here the control system

not only records burn time but also the corresponding temperature and is thus able to calculate residual

performance readiness. The panel has been certified by Germanischer Lloyd.

The lights are exposed to a wide range of temperatures in global shipping. An effective, optimized thermal

management system is used to meet these requirements. aqua signal has managed to develop an effective

coolant in a compact housing, thereby minimizing the impact of temperature on the lifetime of the LED system.

aqua signal put the LED range through a series of comprehensive tests at its own certified environmental and

test laboratory. The trials, which tested visibility, angle and screen combined with drop-shock, vibration,

climate and temperature tests, were completed successfully. An application to have the range certified is given

by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). BSH approval will mean that the Series 65 LED

navigation light will be approved for global use on board ships longer than 20 meters.

Uncomplicated change to LED technology

aqua signal wants to use the Series 65 LED light to appeal to both the market for new ships and to the shipping

companies with a view to persuading them to convert. Changing to LED technology can be done by the crew or

the shipyards with little effort and cost, since installing these maintenance-free LED lights amounts to the same

as installing conventional lighting systems. The dimensions and connections on the adapted monitoring panel

are identical to control panels used up to now. The adapted monitoring panel has one important advantage in

that it can monitor the new LED lights and conventional lights at the same time. This parallel operation

facilitates a needs-based and gradual conversion to LED technology.
