Off Road Trail EnthusiastTwo outstanding rail trails, the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail and Stony Valley Rail Grade provide very different experiences. The Lebanon Valley Rail Trail, with a crushed limestone surface, extends from the city of Lebanon to Lancaster County’s Conewago Recreation Trail. Maps and trailhead access points are available at www.lvrailtrail.com. More miles are under development. The Stony Valley Rail Grade has a rough dirt and gravel surface. This 20 mile trail passes through Pennsylvania Game Lands and parallels Stony Creek, a wild and scenic stream. Cornwall Iron FurnaceP.O. Box 251Rexmont at Boyd StreetCornwall, PA 17016717-272-9711www.cornwallironfurnace.org

Welcome to Cornwall Iron Furnace! It is difficult to imagine that this quiet cluster of beautiful buildings nestled in the rolling hills of Lebanon County was once the home of a fire-breathing blast furnace with an insatiable appetite for rocks and wood! Each picturesque structure at the Cornwall Iron Furnace site played its part in the noisy infancy of the metals industry in America.

The charcoal, cold blast iron furnace at Cornwall operated continuously from 1742 to 1883 under the ownership of the Peter Grubb family and later Robert Coleman and his descendants, and was typical of the furnaces in those days. But Cornwall Iron Furnace is also quite unique in that it is the only known surviving furnace of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. The five-acre site includes remnants of the original eighteenth century industry incorporated into the nineteenth century Furnace Building, Wagon Master and Blacksmith Shop buildings, Abattoir, and Charcoal

Barn now refitted as a Visitor Center. In close proximity but not part of the site are the Ironmaster’s Mansion, several workers villages, and the Cornwall Iron Ore Mine that today is filled with water. The site is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and is a National Historic Landmark as well as a Landmark of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Hours of operation are 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Thursday through Saturday and open noon to 5:00 P.M. on Sunday. Admission for the furnace tour is $8.00/adult, $7.00/seniors and $4.00 for youth between the ages of 3 and 11. Special tours by appointment. For more information call, 717-272-9711.

The Lebanon Valley is rich in history. From the early American settlers who were attracted to the fertile land, the Lebanon Valley has left its landmark on forging the country.

The Isaac Meier Homestead is a large limestone dwelling located along route 501 in Myerstown. Originally built by Valentine Herckelrod in 1738, it was purchased by his son-in-law, Isaac Meier, in 1757. What Meier did architecturally to the house is a prime significance for understanding the history and development of material culture in 18th century Pennsylvania. The eastern part of the house remains Germanic in detail but the western half is composed of parlors, bedrooms and a central hall all of which exhibit an English Georgian influence inspired buy Palladian architecture. The Meier Homestead is being preserved for appreciation of local heritage.

Informational tours of this historic property are given on the Second Saturday of each month, April through October, from 1 PM to 4 PM with the exception of September.
