Learning Maps h Sometimes the best way to engage people around a big idea is to show it. Using learning maps, David Hutchens has helped to create momentum towards change for some of the most inuential organizations in the world. What’s a learning map? In its most common form, it’s a large, table-sized graphic used as a technology for communication and learning. It engages both the right brain (which is holistic, intuitive, pattern creating, storytelling) as well as the left brain (logical, sequential, analytical.) Learners sit around the map in small teams of ve to six members and interact with it in various ways – often driven by a participant guide or a deck of cards that acts as a facilitator (so that the program is, in eect, self- facilitating.) The outcome is always a dialogue generated by the small learner team in which they make connections, draw meaning, and generate new awareness and behavior. “With his innate gifts for storytelling, David Hutchens has the ability to convey key messages in a way that is both simple and profound. He understands how people and organizations learn. “ -Stephen M.R. Covey, N.Y. Times Bestselling Author of Speed of Trust The metaphor-driven learning technology is notable for its ability to engage participants and generate dialogue- driven learning. Learning maps are notable for their ability to create deep levels of learner engagement. They can serve as focal points for learning, linking learners to other co-creative, meaning- making exercises. The dialogue is the true deliverable! Learning is always participant-driven as participants analyze the content of the map by drawing from their own base of experience and wisdom. www.DavidHutchens.com | [email protected] | 615-220-0282 www.DavidHutchens.com | [email protected] | 615-220-0282 www.DavidHutchens.com | [email protected] | 615-220-0282

A Compelling Case for Changel

A learning map diffused the emotion by depicting the business case for change; and also demonstrating the opportunities that existed on the other side of the change.

The reason most new technologies fail is not because of the technology… but because people don’t make the behavioral changes required to make it succeed. This map depicts a complex technology change initiative within the context of the business need. It also lays out the new employee behaviors and mental models required to sustain the new processes.
