Many consider working for one

organisation their entire professional

lives an achievement, but not Jeremy

Gwee, whose 38-year banking career involved

stints overseeing diverse areas such as treasury,

finance, compliance, regulatory reporting,

operations and technology with established

companies such as IBM, Ernst & Young and

HSBC. A committed lifelong learner, he has

several professional qualifications under his belt

and is devoted to mentoring young people.

Can you describe your professional journey

thus far?

I have had a very interesting career having taken

up long roles in both finance and consulting, and

this is a journey I am very proud of. A journey

whose experiences can be shared especially in

the area of being relevant in the new economy.

In my career, I have observed how many of my

peers had not developed themselves, fully which

placed them at risk of being made redundant. I

decided early on in my career that I would need to

constantly upgrade myself so as to stay relevant.

What are your thoughts on young PMEs

going global?

It is inevitable. Given the digital economy today,

we are all interconnected, so I advise that

one not to think of themselves as part of the

local labour force, but as a competitor in the

global one. Moreover, while our young people

have grown up believing that success involves

studying hard and getting a stable job, this linear

progression is outdated. Organisations today

are busy streamlining, and many will find that

working on a contract basis for a few months

rather than years is the norm. Thus, one has

to constantly upgrade to stay relevant with

the times.

What is your advice to PMEs who are starting

their careers?

Firstly, keep your options open—don’t assume

that you will necessarily land a job that you were

trained for. Secondly, minimise your financial

commitments to obtain financial freedom—

save and manage your money wisely. Lastly,

decide on the life and the family you want, as it

is important to have a family that shares your

financial vision.

What essential skills should mid-career

changers possess?

It is not skills, but an attitude that they need. I

prepared myself for change 10 years ago and did

a doctoral programme on the theology of work—

it gave me the opportunity to reconstruct my life

and opened up a whole new world for me. Now,

I’m on the way to earning my MSc in Positive

Psychology. I do all these things so that I can

make myself useful, so young people need to be

flexible and perpetually think about what’s next,

instead of relying on present skill sets.

Joelle Pang was flying high in the corporate

world, when a foray into e-commerce

opened the door to entrepreneurship.

This led to a decade’s worth of experimentation

and self-discovery that saw her set up leading

online fashion platform Dressabelle, and engage

in regional launch work for start-ups such as

Honestbee, and Wantedly. Today, Pang is the

director of regional business development at

FastJobs, a mobile-first platform that provides

non-executive job seekers with equal access to

employment opportunities.

How did you get started in entrepreneurship?

My first job was in the airline industry, but I soon

realised I was in the wrong career. So when

the opportunity arose to start Dressabelle, I

decided to do it. Along the way, I assumed a

management position at a bank but continued

working on Dressabelle at home nightly. I

felt so happy during during those 4 hours

outside of work that I turned it into my main

gig. Eventually, I realised my passion for using

technology-enabled platforms to solve everyday

problems, so I moved on to technology start-

ups, helping to set up businesses in new markets.

What was the most challenging yet rewarding

situation in your career?

I had been running Dressabelle for 4 years—

we were successful, but I was suffering from

depression. I realised that doing well did not

equate to meaning and contentment. It took a

complete breakdown of my physical, emotional,

and mental health to recover from the episode.

I learned that I have to be fulfilled and connected

to my purpose, and that’s how I made the painful

decision to exit Dressabelle and explore the

world of technology start-ups. I want to play a

part in solving inequality, which is why FastJobs

is a meaningful proposition as we are using

technology to help an overlooked sector of

society.

Who inspires you?

I am inspired by people who start from scratch,

such as WhatsApp, whose founder, Jan Koum,

came from poverty, and his sole purpose was to

create products that solved consumer problems.

I also admire people who give back to society,

like Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates. I

believe that living life with purpose allows you to

bring value to the world.

How would you advise young entrepreneurs

and/or mid-career changers looking to strike

out on their own?

Firstly, don’t overthink problems, as this leads

to justifications about why you shouldn’t pursue

what you want to. Secondly, do what fits your

circumstances—advice is great, but no one

understands your situation better than you do.

Thirdly, find great mentors—the most impactful

turning points in my life were instigated by

mentors who spoke a word in season that

triggered me to start reflecting and acting.

Lastly, take care of yourself, as you are your

company’s most important asset—if your health

is gone, everything else goes with it.
