What is Visual Management?
• Being able to look at any given process and know the status of the operation
The Goals of Visual Management
• The ability to identify, at a glance, how well an area is operating to its:
• Goals
• Status of production
• Problem solving effectiveness
Anybody should be able to walk up to ANY cell/work area and immediately know what is going on.
5S: Workplace Organization
• An organized workplace can have a major impact on productivity
• How much time is lost:
• Looking for supplies, parts, forms, etc?
• What about looking for electronic files?
What is 5S?
• A way to improve the workplace organization
• Can be done as a stand-alone effort
• Builds in the controls to keep the space neat & efficient
Why Use 5S?
• Clean it and create a system to sustain orderliness!
• How much time is Wasted finding things?
Steps of 5S
1. Sort (Seiri)
2. Set In Order (Seiton)
3. Shine (Seiso)
4. Standardize (Seiketsu)
5. Sustain (Shitsuke)
• Determine what space you will be investigating
• Involve people in the area (they own it)
• Take pictures of the current state
• Post the current state pictures to capture the baseline condition
