It is with great honor and pleasure that we would like to welcome you to the International Executive Forum on Leading Sustainable Tourism in Latin America and the Caribbean, which will be hosted by Aruba, on October 20th and 21st 2014.

Industry leaders, government officials, business entrepreneurs and scholars from the America’s, the Caribbean, and Europe will gather at the International Executive Forum on ‘Leading Sustainable Tourism’, to discuss leadership strategies and sustainable solutions for tourism development and innovation. While the topic of sustainable tourism has been discussed for well over three decades, and global challenges abound, today the urgency for strategic leadership and innovative solutions that meets the specific demands and needs of Latin America and the Caribbean is greater than ever before.

Hosted by the Aruba Management Institute for Sustainable Tourism And Development - www.arubamistad.com -, in collaboration with the Government of Aruba, Marriott International, and several renowned universities from the Americas, the Caribbean and Europe, the international executive forum will explore innovative ways Latin America and the Caribbean can enhance sustainable tourism and destination innovation, by examining a number of strategic issues in a series of specialized seminars. EXPERTS & SPEAKERSDr. Martha Honey Co-founder/Executive Director, Center for Responsible Travel (CREST)

Dr. Martha Honey is co-founder and Executive Director of the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST), in Washington, DC. Over the last two decades, she has written and lectured widely on ecotourism, Travelers’ Philanthropy, cruise and resort tourism, and certification issues. Her books include Ecotourism and Sustainable Development: Who Owns Paradise? (Island Press, 1999 and 2008) and Ecotourism and Certification: Setting Standards in Practice (Island Press, 2002). She is currently writing a book on coastal and cruise tourism (Selling Sunshine, Island Press, 2015). Previously, Dr. Honey worked for 20 years as a journalist based in East Africa (Tanzania) and Central America (Costa Rica, Mexico, Galapagos). She holds a Ph.D. in African history from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She was Executive Director of The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) from 2003 to 2006. Dr. Honey was profiled in Branded!, Michael Conroy’s book on certification (New Society Publishers, 2007), and was named one of world’s top 10 eco- and sustainable-travel “watchdogs” (CondeNast Traveler, 2008).

Ms. Mari L. Snyder VP Social Responsibility, Marriott International

Ms. Mari L. Snyder is responsible for developing Marriott’s social responsibility strategy and its global implementation

and, in her role on the company’s Global Green Council, collaborates enterprise-wide to develop Marriott’s sustainability strategy and practices, in support of the Council’s executive co-chairs. Ms. Snyder manages Marriott’s portfolio of innovative environmental initiatives, including a rainforest preservation project in the Amazon and a water conservation/micro-enterprise project in Southwest China. Ms. Snyder’s

team establishes and manages the company’s community partnerships, corporate contributions, disaster relief, associate volunteerism and stakeholder engagement programs. She reports the company’s sustainability and social responsibility results. Prior to joining Marriott, Ms. Snyder worked for M&M/MARS for nine years. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, Ms. Snyder serves on the Board of Advisors of the Universities at Shady Grove, University System of Maryland and the Business Advisory Council of St. Bonaventure University.

Ronella Tjin AsjoeCEO, Aruba Tourism Authority

Known for her forward-thinking, innovative leadership and fierce enthusiasm, Aruba Tourism Authority (ATA) Chief

Executive Officer Ronella Tjin Asjoe-Croes brings a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record that has elevated Aruba tourism to the next level. Mrs. Tjin Asjoe-Croes applies almost a decade of experience at the helm of a Tourism Authority to effectively lead Aruba’s destination marketing, business development and partnerships - guiding strategy and direction for global marketing programs, managing overseas offices and budgets and collaborating with the Aruban government and the country’s private sector. With a key focus on sustainable practices, Mrs. Tjin Asjoe-Croes implements speed, flexibility and innovation to drive Aruba’s tourism market and product upward.

Guido Bauer CEO/Owner, Green Globe

Guido Bauer, a native of Southern Germany, received a degree in tourism and hotel administration. Throughout

his career Guido was consulting with cruise lines, tour operators as well as airlines and hotels. His experience led him to develop BWEE

Vacations (British West Indies Airways, based in Port-of-Spain/Trinidad & Tobago), a vacation/holiday program for the Caribbean with a focus on sustainable tourism. In 2001 Guido founded Green Certifications Inc., a company focused on providing sustainability services and certification for the hospitality and tourism industry. In 2006 Green Certifications Inc. became a Green Globe licensee, operating as Green Globe Certification Inc. based in Los Angeles, California with representations in the Caribbean, Latin America, Brazil, Portugal, Germany, Benelux, Switzerland, Austria, South Africa, Middle East, India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Singapore and Bali. Guido built a worldwide network (Green Globe Preferred Partners) with over 100 sustainability experts and auditors serving 94 countries.

Tom Calame GM, Aruba Marriott Resort

Tom Calame is General Manager at the Aruba Marriott Resort, and oversees all aspects of hotel operations,

maximization of guest satisfaction, financial performance, and staff development. Tom set the pre-opening strategy for the JW Marriott Mexico City, and in 1999, accepted the position of Director of Operations at the Renaissance Grand Beach Resort in St. Thomas. In 2002, he became the general manager at the Casa Magna Marriott Cancun Resort, prior to accepting the general manager position at the JW Marriott Lima in 2004. Tom holds a Bachelor degree in Hotel Management, and an MBA from the University of Liverpool (United Kingdom).

Ewald BiemansResort Entrepreneur/Owner, Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort

Ewald Biemans is the owner of Bucuti & Tara Beach Resorts in Aruba. Mr. Biemans is an eco-preneur par excellence, and

his sustained success in improving profitability through sustainable means has earned both him and his properties global recognition. In 2004 he was

awarded the International Hotel & Restaurant Association Environmental Award for “Innovation in Environmental Best Practice” at the annual congress in Istanbul, Turkey. Prior to that, he received the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association - award for Environmental Stewardship and the Green Globe Commendation award for environmental stewardship, among a host of other awards. As a local pioneer in eco-friendly practices, Mr. Biemans led Bucuti into becoming the first hotel in the Americas to achieve the highly coveted ISO 14001 environmental certification in 2003, and has repeated the honor during audits every year since. Green Globe certification has been achieved for the last 14 years. Recently a third Certification was added to the portfolio - Travelife!The successful hotelier will outline a complete environmental roadmap for hotels and destination organizations to follow in order to be profitable while being sustainable. He will also offer suggestions for government entities to implement in terms of environmental conservation at tourism level in terms of planning and construction of green buildings.

Stefan OosterwaalRestaurant Entrepreneur/Owner, Linda’s Dutch Pancakes and Pizzas

Stefan Oosterwaal is restaurant owner and entrepreneur of Linda’s Dutch Pancakes and Pizzas, a family restaurant that has been serving authentic Dutch Pancakes for over 13 years. After taking over his family’s business, while completing his MBA in Tourism and International Business, Stefan creatively diversified, experimented and transformed the restaurant business with innovative social media strategies and tactics. Today, his restaurant is known for the “most awesome breakfast in Aruba”, and in 2014 received the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. Mr. Oosterwaal will discuss how small tourism businesses can effectively exploit social media to connect with customers and visitors, create a sustainable revenue stream.

Sam Cole Professor, University of Buffalo, NY

Before joining the Department of Planning and Environmental Design at UB in 1983, Professor Sam Cole

worked in a variety of national and international positions in economic development and regional planning, beginning in the Urban Planning Division of the UK Ministry of Housing and Local Government. Subsequently, he became Senior Fellow at the Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex, and Visiting Fellow at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, New York, with professorial appointments in Papua New Guinea, India, Sweden, and the UB Department of Geography. Over the years he has worked with international and regional development agencies and community organizations in Europe, Africa, Asia and the South Pacific, and the Americas. Prof. Dr. Cole’s presentation addresses the topic of destination innovation and competitiveness from conceptual, empirical, and tourism policy perspectives.

Robin DiPietroDirector/Professor, International Institute for Foodservice Research and Education

Robin DiPietro, Ph.D., MBA is the Director of the International Institute for Foodservice Research and Education and an Associate Professor at the University of South Carolina in the Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management program. She received her BS, MBA, and PhD from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Prior to her work at the University of South Carolina, Dr. DiPietro worked at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, at the University of Central Florida. In this presentation, Dr. DiPietro will highlight how organizations can create sustainable businesses through the positive development of people in the organization.

Simon HudsonDirector/Professor, Center for Economic Excellence in Tourism and Travel

Dr. Simon Hudson is the Director and Endowed Chair for the SmartState Center of Economic Excellence in Tourism and Economic Development at the University of South Carolina. He has held previous academic positions at the University of Calgary in Canada and the University of Brighton in England. He has also worked as a visiting professor in Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Fiji, New Zealand, the United States and Australia. Prior to working in academia, he spent several years working in the tourism industry in Europe. Dr. Hudson has written six books and more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, and is frequently invited to speak about his passion for tourism at conferences all over the world.

Gerald “Gino” KockAssistant Professor, University of Aruba

Dr. Gerald (Gino) Kock, is a 1987 alumni of the Culinary Institute of America, with over 15 years of experience

in the hotel, restaurant, airline and healthcare industry (Aruba, St. Maarten, the Netherlands and the United States of America). He later joined the educational arena where he was mainly in charged with the implementation and supervision of the American Culinary Federation’s Apprenticeship Program at the Aruba’s local community college “Colegio EPI” . In 2004, he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in International Hospitality and Business Management at the Stenden University in the Netherlands (graduating Cum Laude). Shortly after, he received a scholarship from both the Government of Aruba and the University of Aruba to obtain his doctoral degree at the University of Central Florida. Currently, Dr. Kock serves as a full-time assistant professor at the University of Aruba.

Diego AcevedoVP Business Development, Bluerise

Mr. Diego Acevedo is VP Business Development at Bluerise, a company based in the Netherlands focused

on Ocean Thermal Energy Technologies. Bluerise focuses on technology and project development for implementation of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) projects as well as Ocean Ecoparks that utilize the deep ocean resource. Among other activities, Bluerise is currently active in Curaçao and Colombia towards the implementation of OTEC and SWAC systems.

Mr. Acevedo joined Bluerise after moving to the Netherlands to study an MSc in Sustainable Energy Technologies at TU Delft where he focused on island energy solutions. He currently resides in Aruba and is originally from Colombia. He has held different engineering, strategy and management positions in several countries including Colombia, the US, Germany, France and the Netherlands. He also holds a BS degree (magna cum laude) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida.” Mr. Acevedo’s focus will be on the value and possibilities of sustainable and local production of food and other products in tropical Islands.
