access to platform

Over the past 60 years, this energy delivery company has

become a leader in the safe and reliable delivery of energy

in North America; they operate the world’s largest and most

sophisticated pipeline system, transporting and delivering

millions of barrels of crude oil and billions of cubic feet of

natural gas annually as well as generating nearly two

gigawatts of renewable energy. Its workforce of more than

11,000 people operates across North America and it has the

honour of being recognised as one of the Global 100 Most

Sustainable Corporations in the World.

With a focus on environmental and occupational safety,

their Health and Safety Principles and Lifesaving Rules are

founded on real-life incidents, and communicated, clarified,

and reinforced company-wide. With access to numerous

growth opportunities, their 5 year strategic focus is their

enterprise-wide growth capital program, with an enviable

projected earnings-per-share growth rate of between 10-12%.

“The system helps to ensure data integrity. There’s a process

in place for entering and validating data. This provides more

consistent and auditable emissions data,” says a Corporate

Social Responsibility Advisor at the company’s head office.

Against a backdrop of aggressive growth-oriented

goals, the company wanted to ensure their focus on a

world-class zero incidents and zero injury safety culture,

and ever more sustainable operations could be

supported and delivered by internal systems, while at

the same time considering the greater risk and

compliance context.

Corporate Goals

Guaranteeing safety and operational reliability

Executing a $36 Billion growth capital program

Extending and diversifying growth

Maintaining the foundation of their core values, earning

their social licence to operate

Retaining, attracting and developing their people.

Achieving industry leadership in safety by ensuring the reliability and integrity of pipelines and facilities,

and protection of the environment.

Phasing Out Disparate Systems

The company also had to address specific

organisational challenges, in particular phasing out

numerous internal disparate applications e.g. Lotus

Notes, Sharepoint, homegrown applications, and

manual spreadsheet data capture and compilation.

A Risk-Based Approach to Business

The company wanted to transform its operations by taking a risk-based approach to business with these

goals:

Be prepared for regulatory and operational change

Comply with regulatory requirements spanning Canada and USA

Enable mandatory and voluntary reporting to a range of initiatives such as the GRI and CDP

Enhance decision making through quality and timely data (leading indicators)

Enhance management capabilities for EHS programs (HAZID, incidents, etc.).

Focus IT investment on business outcomes.

The company rose to the challenge with its EHS

initiative that sought to reduce risk and achieve

several internal goals with the help of Enablon’s highly

configurable EHS and Sustainability Performance

Management web-based platform.

Engaging with Enablon's highly configurable EHS and

Sustainability web platform, from 2011 onwards,

allowed the company to target these goals, tailoring

the platform to deliver their improved business

processes, unifying them in one system and removing

the headache of dealing with multiple aging

disparate internal systems which had been identified

as approaching end of life. The system has been

configured to fit each business unit’s processes with

the implementation being phased into the

organisation, starting with Enablon Incident

Additionally the company’s Gas Distribution and

Transportation business units began using the system to

report greenhouse gas emissions. In January 2013, this

reporting was expanded to cover criteria air

contaminants. The Pipelines business unit is also

contributing to emissions data and recently launched a

new module on the paltform to track and manage

safety and environmental incidents. Working behind the

scenes to introduce their Enablon platform has been a

project team, which has included up to 30 IT and

business specialists from across the company.

According to system users, their Enablon EHS management platform is profoundly changing the way

reporting is managed at the company. Before, data was manually entered using separate spreadsheets,

within the Gas Distribution business unit alone, information was collected from 500 to 600 spreadsheets.

With the launch of the EHS system, the time

required to pull reports has been drastically

reduced. In the past, the Manager of Sustainable

Energy would wait several months for business

units to collect and input data needed for the

company’s CDP report. Not anymore. “The system

sends out regular email prompts to data providers

to enter the required information. Now I can go

into the system and get the data I need right

away”. An EHS Specialist at the company adds:

“The system provides really good functionality.

You can click on different parameters and track

down any data you want.”

The wide-ranging results achieved had significant

impacts for the company, across the organisation

and externally.

Internally safety objectives are built into each

employee’s annual job objectives, and the

number of EHS personnel employed has gone up.

Having a supporting software system that can

report and improve such objectives and

processes is invaluable, so the tool is used to

pinpoint High Learning Value incidents to help

prevent further incidents form occurring.

Crucially one of the external impacts is being able to confidently demonstrate that they are improving on

achieving a ‘Zero-spill’ culture, and reducing their environmental impact.

In 2013, they were able to show clear leadership in their field by performing better than industry peers in spill

frequency. At a corporate level, the company can now demonstrate auditability of their data

management to regulators such as OHSA, EPA. In addition, due to the project initiatives and engagement

within the company, safety and operational reliability has been built into the accountability structure, with

the President, CEOs and Boards of Directors all actively involved.

One of the biggest impacts the organisation is seeing is the effect on its reputation. Regaining its listing on

CDP’s ‘Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index’, being seen as a Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporation and

on the list of the Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada really sets the company apart from its peers and

appeals to investors, who are now more focused than ever on sustainability performance.

In delivering their EHS initiatives, the company knew that a

future objective was overhauling its GRC processes to

establish a risk framework and processes that will capture,

monitor and report on all major risks across the Enterprise.

Implementing the platform helped uncover where systems

and processes overlap. The knowledge and experience of

fitting the Enablon system to the business, can thus be

harnessed when they expand the Enablon solution to meet

their risk management needs, as a next step.

The company is now looking at deploying additional Health

and Safety modules including Observations, Inspections,

Management of Change, as well as Supply Chain

Management in relation to Contractors. Refining their Air

Quality Reporting for Criteria Air Contaminants and

expanding the reporting analytics and metrics solution is also

on the agenda.

BENEFITS OF THE EHS SYSTEM

“ The information that comes

from the new system will be

reported not just to

regulators but in our annual

CSR Reports and to investor

analysts. This will help us to

continue to be viewed as a

leading company
