SUMMER 2011: Life-skills for Foster Teens
Responding to an inquiry from Stark County Job & Family Services, Leadership Stark County staff will be leading three workshops as part of the Independent Living summer program for foster youth. Stark County teen age youth, ages 15 ½ -21, who are in ‘agency custody’ and living with foster families will attend a series of daytime programs that meet State of Ohio guidelines including career assessment and vocational preparation. The Independent Living program provides comprehensive training to equip youth with skills necessary for them to function as adults. For the Leadership Stark County 2011 Summer Foster Youth Workshops, Fran Wells and Stephanie Werren have developed an engaging and interactive curriculum that includes:
• Strengths Finder profile for personal leadership development• Outdoor art activity in downtown green spaces• Tours of downtown businesses with vocational focus• Presentations by LSC graduates in areas of expertise • Downtown Canton history including civil rights and voting rights • Lunch at local downtown restaurants • Stark County field trip for career exploration (based on the 2004 Youth at Risk bus tour). NEW! Malone University to Offer Discount to Current LSC Signature Program Graduates!
This year marks the 25th year that Leadership Stark County has been training motivated leaders to serve our community. In honor of the anniversary, Leadership Stark County would like to give you ‘More of What We Do Best’ ; a year of learning, motivation, and networking. We have already seen “175,000 chicks” at the Park Farms hatchery and observed the USDA inspected processing plant as well. The walking tour of downtown Canton with John Werren, followed by an after-hours at La Parilla Mexican Grill was well-attended. Please plan to join us for any or all of the remaining events.

Malone University is now providing an incentive to Leadership Stark County Signature Program graduates to obtain a bachelors degree or to enroll in graduate programs with substantial savings.
Members of the 24th Class and the upcoming 25th Class who do not hold a bachelors degree will receive a 15% tuition discount when they enroll in the Malone Management Program. The Malone Management Program is an undergraduate BA degree completion program with a major in management.
24th Class and upcoming 25th Class members who do hold a bachelors degree and wish to enroll in graduate courses or pursue a graduate degree may enroll in any graduate program offered on the Malone University campus or online and receive 15% tuition discount.

The Spotlight Stark County program for young professionals enters its sixth year in 2011 and is more popular than ever with those who want to strengthen their leadership skills and be more involved in Stark County. It is an ideal way to invest in young employees and build their value with your organization. The six sessions are generally held from 4-6 p.m. every other week beginning in September. Topics covered include:
• Speed Networking • Downtown Canton: Then & Now • Discovering & Applying Your Strengths • Introduction to Community Service Projects • Community and organizational engagement • “Speed-Boarding” for introduction to non-profit board service. • The Arts Scene

Frequently Asked Questions:Why do we need to have an Annual Fund campaign?Although we continue to develop new sources of revenue, tuition and fees only cover about half of the cost of providing our programs. In addition to the hundreds of volunteers who work to produce the programs, fund drive donations and sponsorships allow us to keep tuition affordable for all.
What kinds of new programs might you offer?Some new program possibilities include programs that help with board development and training, company board placement programs, programs that reach at-risk youth and programs featuring advanced topics on governmental issues.
Does Leadership Stark County need more funding?Leadership Stark County has grown in a variety of ways. Along with administrating the expanded programming already mentioned, more than 830 alumni and additional program participants receive services including newsletters, networking opportunities, tours and educational events that require staff hours.

Ralph Regula Addresses GOVERNMENT LEADERSHIP ACADEMYAt a closing program held at the Stark Parks Exploration Gateway, the nineteen members of the 2011 Government Leadership Academy celebrated their course completion with lunch and a keynote address by former congressman Ralph Regula. Class reflections were given by Raeann Guiley, who stated that,

and citizens can do to make our way of life even better if

Ribs Burn-off Help WantedAlumni and friends are needed to man the beer booths at the Pro Football Hall Fame Enshrinement Festival’s National Ribs Burn-Off.
