There are very few things that are as awe inspiring as placing your fingertips and forehead on the Kotel
(Western Wall), feeling the cool smooth stone that has been touched by thousands upon thousands of Jews for
over 2,000 years. I still feel that horizontal connection through time when I revisit Jerusalem. The Wall has
become an old friend that has watched me grow and change over the course of my life, first meeting me when
I was 5 traveling with my family to Israel for the first time. It saw me through years of growth in college and
my first year of marriage, as Aaron and I lived in Jerusalem the year after our wedding. It counseled me
through rabbinical school and various trips I have led including our very own Hazak trip to Israel when I
touched the holy land for the first time as a rabbi.
Jerusalem is the heart in the body politique of the Jewish people. The Jewish soul starting with
Abraham has always pointed east towards Jerusalem. We read in the book of Psalms:
“If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand
forget her cunning. Let my tongue cleave to the
roof of my mouth, if I do not remember you, if I
do not Jerusalem above my chiefest joy.”
Visiting Israel can be the most rewarding, inspiring, and enlivening experiences for a family or an
individual. Something cliques when you walk down Ben-yehuda Street and see Coca-cola bottles written in
Hebrew script or when you climb the ruins of Masada. We have a trip planned for December, but need a few
more couples to make it happen. If you’re interested in that trip, or want to gather your friends and families in
the synagogue for a different trip, let me know. I pray and hope that every Jew has this opportunity.
I have the honor of going back again in the beginning of July as I attend a cross-denominational
conference of Rabbis at the Shalom Hartman Institute, one of the leading voices of pluralism in Israel
in their relationship with the Diaspora. I will be there for the first two weeks of July. If you or your children
will be in Israel July 1-9, please let me know. I am taking a group of our BJC young adults out for dinner one
night in Jerusalem or Tel Aviv. Israel must be at the center of our hearts, our bucket lists, and our vision for
our synagogue. Next year we will have a series of intense discussions about Israel called i-Engage. Keep your
eyes out for more info. I hope you’ll join us. If you are passionate about Israel, let me know. We are always
looking to create more programming and discourse around our holy land. In the words of the Medieval poet,
Yehudah Halevi, “My heart is in the East, and I am in the furthermost West.” May we always strive to unite
our hearts and our bodies in the Land of Israel.
B’shalom,
Rabbi Bernstein

Message for Cantor Yavneh
In the last few weeks, we have prayed together for the strength and healing of our spiritual guide, Cantor
Yavneh. We are so grateful he is growing stronger every day. His voice leads our prayers and inspires us to
pour out our hearts. This is what we have done for our friend and teacher who means so much to all of us. I
offer up one line of prayer for us to contemplate and share as we wait for our Cantor to return and share his
words of wisdom in the next bulletin. In our morning services, we sing:
“Ozi Vezimrat yah, vayehi li, lishua.”
“God, your are my strength and my SONG, you
are my redemption.”
--Exodus 15:2
We often feel like individual notes standing alone, but God is the uniting melody that fills the silence between
us with poetic harmony. The soul yearns for that connection, that melody. This is the mission of our
community, to connect to each other, to our heritage, and to the great source of life, to not stand as individual
notes, but to come together. Cantor Yavneh brings the melody out from within us and draws it together
between us. We are so fortunate for his voice, his gift, and his connection to God and our community.
B’shalom,
Rabbi Bernstein

Mrs. “O” - Principal of the Herbert Jacobson Hebrew School at the Bellmore Jewish Center
Graduation will be held on Monday, June 22nd. Dinner will be at 6:30pm and the graduation ceremony will promptly follow at 8:00pm. At this time we will be bidding our Hey students a fond farewell, knowing that they will always be a part of our Temple Community. We are hopeful that our students will volunteer for our Hebrew School programs. It is my sincere hope that our school will always maintain a connection with our graduates. May all your dreams and aspirations come to fruition.
In closing, I would like to say that I think this has been a great year for our Hebrew School. I want to acknowl-
edge the outstanding degree of commitment shown by our parents to the goals to which our school aspires. For this dedication and assistance I want to express my sincere thanks and gratitude. It has been wonderful working with our parents not just this year, but every year.
I would be remiss if I failed to note the strong partnership exhibited by the various arms of our synagogue who
have given our school their valued support over the past year. Your contributions are sincerely appreciated. Together, they foster an environment noteworthy for its singular respect to a quality education for our students. This environment is of course led by our dedicated President, Tina Baron to whom I offer my complete and total gratitude.
I also want to thank Rabbi Bernstein and Cantor Yavneh for their cooperation and support with all of our endeav-
ors. Both of you make my job much easier. I believe that we work very well together and form a cohesive team dedicated to our students’ advancement. None of our accomplishments could be attained without the ongoing and continued sup-port of Sheree Jarmol, our VP of Education, and our dedicated school board.
A well-deserved thank-you to Chris, Cynthia and Sharyn who on a daily basis quietly go about their important
jobs in a professional manner. Thank you, ladies, for all your help and support. Finally, I want to express my appreciate for the hard work and dedication shown by my professional teaching
staff, support staff, and of course Evan. Evan has proven to be invaluable to me and our Hebrew School! He continues to propel us into the 21st century and we love it. Thanks Evan for all you do!
On behalf of my professional staff I want to wish one and all a healthy and restful summer. If you need to consult
me over the upcoming months, I am available through my email or voicemail. If you need to meet with me I am always available to you. My door is always open.
I am honored to recognize many of our students for their hard work and commitment to their Judaic studies. Mazal Tov to all.

Fast Days: 17th of Tammuz and 9th of Av By Lee Weisbord
The Seventeenth of Tammuz (Hebrew: שבעה עשר בתמוז , Shiv'ah Asar b'Tammuz) is a minor Jewish fast day. It commemorates the breach of the walls of Jerusalem before the destruction of the Holy Temple. Tzom
Tammuz falls on the 17th day of the Hebrew month of Tammuz and marks the beginning of the three-week mourning period leading up to Tisha B'Av. Should the day coincide with Shabbat, the fast is delayed until Sunday. Tzom Tammuz begins at dawn (first light) and ends at nightfall (full dark). This year, Tzom Tam-
muz begins at dawn on Sunday, July 5th 2015. The three weeks between Tzom Tammuz and Tisha B’Av are a period of mourning. During this three week period, weddings and other parties are not permitted, and people refrain from cutting their hair. From the first to the ninth of Av, it is customary to refrain from eating meat or drinking wine (except on the Shabbat) and from wearing new clothing. Tisha B'Av, (Hebrew:
),ט׳ באב or תשעה באב which means the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av, is the culmination of the three week period of increasing mourning that begins with the Fast of the 17th of Tammuz. Tisha B'Av is a day of mourning to commemorate the many tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people, many of which have oc-curred on the ninth of Av. Tisha B'Av primarily commemorates the destruction of the first and second Tem-ples, both of which were destroyed on the ninth of Av (the first by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E.; the second by the Romans in 70 C.E.). Although this day is primarily meant to commemorate the destruction of the Tem-ple, it is appropriate to consider the many other tragedies of the Jewish people, many of which occurred on this day, including the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 and from England in 1290. In synagogue, the book of Lamentations is read. Some synagogues drape the ark in black. Tisha B'Av falls in July or August in the Western calendar. Tisha B'Av is never observed on Shabbat. If the 9th of Av falls on Shabbat, observance of Tisha B'Av is postponed until the 10th of Av. This year, 5775, Tisha B’Av starts at sunset on Saturday, July 25th, 2015 and ends at nightfall on Sunday, July 26th.
From Bill Berkowitz - Hazak I wish to express my thanks and appreciation to all the synagogue and Hazak members who attended the festivities at Eisenhower Park on Sunday, June 7 for the annual Israel Night program. I was deeply touched to be among the honorees chosen by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island for its community service award given that day. The true honoree, though, is our Hazak Chapter and its wonderful, active membership. I would especially like to thank our Rabbi Bernstein for nominating us, considering us worthy of this recognition. -Bill

Hazak News by Bill Berkowitz
5th Annual Hazak Summer Extended Trip – July 14-16, 2015, to Newport, Rhode Island – The number of people registered for this trip has grown, and this is the last call for anyone else interested in joining us for our annual summer 3-day, 2-night adventure. We will be staying at the Hampton Inn & Suites, and visiting a num-ber of sights: two mansions, The Breakers and The Elms (the “summer cottages” of the wealthy), Touro Syna-gogue, The National Museum of American Illustration, and the historical wharves and streets of this “City by the Sea.” Everything is included in the price for this trip: hotel, transportation (luxury coach), all meals (two breakfasts, three lunches, two dinners), sight admissions, docents, all gratuities (except for chamber maid). The cost is $600 (double occupancy); $200 single supplement. Call Bill for additional information and details (221-2056). Thursday, July 23 – 1:30 PM – “Songs of Social Commentary” – our guest will be Lois Morton, singer/songwriter/cabaret performer, known to Long Island and Manhattan audiences for her humorous songs of so-cial commentary (ala Tom Lehrer) on subjects such as clutter, cell phones, and diets. She will keep you laugh-ing while “tugging at your heartstrings.” This program is free to members; guests $5. Refreshments will be served. Call Bill to pre-register. Tuesday, Aug. 11 – 1:30 PM – “Kinahora/Knock Wood/Poo, Poo, Poo: Jewish Superstitions Old and
New” – We will welcome Carol Cott Gross for a fun and interactive program that traces multicultural roots of Jewish superstition and explores how superstitions cluster around life-cycle events: pregnancy, childhood, birthdays, engagements, weddings, moving, travel, sports, etc. Using Jewish family lore, we’ll laugh and learn how superstitions morph into customs, fads, fashions, and become nostalgic links to our past. Everyone is
encouraged to bring along and share a family superstition, and will take home tips and an original car-
toon by a prize-winning artist. This program is free to members; guests $5. Refreshments will be served. Call Bill to pre-register.
For long-term planners, note that our Annual Hazak Chanukah Party this year is planned for Wed. Dec. 9 at
1:30 PM. In addition, we have moved our Annual Hazak Shabbat from its customary winter celebration to Sat. Aug. 6, 2016, during warm weather that will allow more of our members to attend. The next bulletin/flyer will provide details on trips planned for the fall.
Game Days: July 6, 20; Aug. 3, 17, 31 (Note: 3 days in Aug.); Sep. 21; Oct. 12, 26; Nov. 9, 23; Dec. 7.
Jewish Haiku Project
Here’s a chance to be creative, funny, sensitive and poetic, and have your poetry published in our temple bul-
letin!
Hazak is sponsoring a “Jewish Haiku” poetry project, and encourages you to express your feelings, thoughts,
experiences and images in a short, concise poetic form, haiku.
Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry that uses sensory language to capture a feeling or an image. It
was often inspired by an element of nature, a moment of beauty, or some other poignant experience.
Each poem consists of three lines: traditionally the first and last lines of each contain five syllables while the
middle line contains seven syllables. In modern haiku, the three lines remain, but the limitations on syllables
is more flexible, so you have some wiggle room to create your own poem. Here are two examples, one hu-
morous:
Here are some hints to get you started:
1. Select an experience: nature, emotions, relationships, or others
2. Use a seasonal reference (or holiday, or “time”)
3. Use the third line for a subject shift (from the specific, juxtaposed first two lines, shift the perspective
from the specific and detailed to a more expansive, general conclusion, giving the poem deeper meta-
phorical meaning.
Here are two more examples to help you get started:
Jewish Buddhism: Her lips near my ear,
If there is no self, Aunt Sadie whispers the name
Whose arthritis is this? Of her friend’s disease.
We encourage you to release the sensitive poet within you!
Submit your poems to Hazak by mail (Bellmore Jewish Center, Att: Hazak, 2550 S. Centre Ave.
Bellmore, NY 11710 or by e-mail to [email protected].
