Walking My Talk and L’dor va dorby Joan Levison, Board President

There are so many things that we want to pass on to our children. As parents, we spend a lot of time working on teaching the skills and valuesthat we believe are important. We focus on teaching our children to be compassionate, inquisitive, confident, and so forth.

It is one of our most important roles as parents. And when we see flashes of our teaching in our children’s behavior, it is breathtaking and more gratifying than almost anything else.

Passing on these values is a fine balance between modeling and talking. Children are the original and still finest insincerity detectors. We can talk all we want about our values but the minute we aren’t actually living these values, those little antennas pop up, detecting the difference between our words and our actions. Sometimes they call us on these lapses but generally, they just observe that we aren’t living by our touted values and understand that for all our talk, these aren’t really important values to us.

One of the best ways I’ve found for my children see my values in action is to share with them which non-profits I financially support every year. It’s a clear case of putting my money where my mouth is. And frequently, they have interesting insights that spark a meaningful conversation.

I’d like to suggest that as you reflect on the contribution that you have given to the current capital campaign, or perhaps on the capital campaign gift that you are contemplating, you use this as an opportunity to have a conversation with your children, from school age on through those adult offspring who are making charitable contributions themselves. Conversations with younger children help them understand that tzedakah is something that adults do. It isn’t just coins in the tzedakah box on Shabbat. It is an opportunity to very clearly show them what you feel is valuable in life and how you are taking action. It’s important role modeling.

For those of us with adult children, this conversation can be a unique opportunity to have a significant discussion around your values and your vision for the future. If you are struggling, as many of us do about how our children will integrate Judaism into their lives, showing them your commitment to the continuity of the sacred spaces essential to Judaism’s continuation is an important statement and opportunity to role model. I have found it’s a wonderful way to open up a wide ranging conversation—I’m not asking my sons for anything, I’m just sharing with my adult children my thoughts and actions. It has led to some insightful conversations in which they have explored their incipient thoughts about becoming donors to causes they care about. And they have helped me clarify mine.

So, consider using your capital campaign contribution as a means to discuss your Jewish values. You might just find that the conversations this sparks provides fascinating insights into your own values and those of your children. And becomes a path for future family conversations about what is important to you and your loved ones.

Message from Rabbi Paul SteinbergKol Shofar’s new Interim Director of Life Long Learning

It is with great honor and excitement that I introduce myself as a new member of the Kol Shofar team as the Director of Life Long Learning.I am incredibly grateful for the warmth that I have received from the community and staff. For those I have not yet met, I am sorry I missed you and I look forward to meeting you and learning with you soon.

I am now finishing my thirteenth year (my Bar Mitzvah year!) as a rabbi and a Jewish educator, and the vast majority of my academic life and career has been dedicated to meaningful, relevant, and quality Jewish learning. I began my rabbinic career in 2004, and spent my first four years serving as the Rabbi and Director of Jewish Studies and Hebrew at the preeminent Solomon Schechter Jewish day school in Dallas, Texas.

Moving west, I became the Senior Educator and Assistant Rabbi at Valley Beth Shalom in Los Angeles, where I supervised all of the synagogue’s educational endeavors, especially focusing on the religious school and preschool.

For the past few years, I have been working as the Community Rabbi at Beit T’Shuvah, a unique combination of both a synagogue community and rehabilitation center.

Since my days as a graduate student until today, I have been involved in Jewish education in practically every arena: teaching at every level from preschool to graduate school, and in leadership including youth director, school principal, and national board chair. I have even been a basketball coach. In that time, I have seen the incredible value of a good Jewish education and how Jewish wisdom can guide both children and adults toward living a good and well-rounded life.

Again, I am thrilled at the opportunity to join the wonderful community of Kol Shofar.

B’shalom,Rabbi Paul Steinberg

Get to know Rabbinic Interns Sam Rotenberg & Keilah LebellSam will be with us another year & Keilah will join us for High Holy Day services

Where did you grow up? Where did you go to school?

SR: I grew up in South Florida, and studied jazz piano and philosophy at the University of Miami. Growing up, I was heavily involved in USY and Camp Ramah Darom. KL: I grew up in West Marin in the small, rural town of Woodacre. We were a part of Congregation Rodef Sholom in San Rafael and I attended high school at The Branson School in Ross. I studied classical liberal arts at St. John’s College in Santa Fe, NM.

What led you to choose the rabbinate?SR: I chose to pursue the rabbinate so I could synthesize my three core interests: music, philosophy, and Judaism.KL: Having abandoned religious practice for the most part after my bat mitzvah, I returned to Judaism in college in the wake of some difficult life experiences. Judaism became my portable, steadfast home. This transformation inspired me to share Judaism as a spiritual home with others.

What have been some of your most satisfying experiences as a rabbinical student?SR: It has been a very important opportunity to work at Kol Shofar over the last year. I have learned so much by working with Rabbi Leider, and from having the opportunity to teach and learn from the Kol Shofar community.KL: There are so many fulfilling experiences I could describe. It has been a gift to delve deep into the rabbinic sources with some of the most devoted and wise teachers. Also, I had the privilege to work as a spiritual counselor for a year at Beit T’Shuvah, a Jewish addiction treatment center in LA. It was powerful to help guide people who feel completely enslaved towards healing and freedom with the words and practices of our ancient tradition.

What does it mean (to you) to be Jewish?SR: It means living a life of holy awareness. I pay close attention to the food I put in my body, the words that come out of my mouth, and the way I move in this world, and I do so through the mode of this ancient tradition.KL: My Jewish identity reminds me that I am a small, yet holy, piece of the Jewish people and of the universe. As a Jew I am called to learn and to bring a bit more light and healing into the world.

For those who don’t know, Sam & Keilah are married. How did you meet?KL: Sam and I met on the first day of classes at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies, a co-ed yeshiva in Jerusalem. He asked me to be his havruta (study partner) and I said yes!

Diane Cohen Zack Kol Shofar Volunteer Leadership Award2017 Honoree: Susan Schneider

Following in the tradition of past winners of this award, Steve Sockolovand Ron and Rhea Brown, Susan Schneider’s leadership is quiet and humble, and she is an inuflential leader and role model we are gratefulto have in our community.

Growing up in Marin, Susan Schneider joined Kol Shofar in the mid-1970’s when it was meeting at the JCC. One of her earliest memories of the synagogue was loving the Shabbat morning services so much that she - at age eight - would walk about a mile by herself to services to be on time. After attending UC Davis and living in Israel, Susan became an RN and has worked in a private pediatric office in Mill Valley for the last 20 years. An avid competitive soccer player, she also adores the Grateful Dead, the SF Giants, and the Warriors.

When Susan joined Kol Shofar as an adult, she wrote that she wanted to follow in the footsteps of her family as role models who gave of themselves to the shul. And give she has: from reading Torah at Thursday morning minyan to coordinating minyan leaders on a weekly basis, to rolling Torahs for Shabbat morning, to leading all parts of the Shabbat morning service, to offering inspiring drashot and writing a Kol Torah column on the weekly Torah portion for our Shabbat bulleting, to leading our community heartfelt davenning on the High Holy Days, and so much more. Susan is a warm host and welcomes so many people to her Shabbat and holiday table.

Kol Shofar Maccabees

The CJS aims to help us cultivate our inner lives and our connection to the Divine, while building a community of fellow travelers on the spiritual path.

CJS for All Ages: From Parents of Young Children to Wise Agingby Rabbi Chai Levy

In addition to our regular programs such as the weekly Shabbat Sit Meditation and the monthly Kol Neshama Minyan and Rosh Hodesh group, the CJS facilitates exploring Jewish spirituality at different stages of life.

For the last two years, Larry Yermack has led a Wise Aging group for those in their sixties and seventies to explore their inner lives.

This past year, I offered sessions on Sunday mornings on “The Spirituality of Jewish Parenting,” in which parents of young children gathered to discuss the challenges of parenting today and to be guided by Jewish language and values: How do we, along with our kids, stay present and open to “radical amazement” in our high-tech world filled with electronic devices? How do we teach and model for our children the values of chesed (lovingkindness), hospitality, and welcoming the stranger? How do we instill in our children - using the example of Abraham our patriarch - both to respect authority and to challenge authority, especially in these confusing times? These are some of the topics we explored, and I look forward to continuing these sessions with parents next school year.

We plan to continue to offer Torah yoga classes to Beit Binah parents and anyone else who would like to spend Sunday mornings in embodied practice that incorporates Jewish wisdom. Also next year, I will be offering to our Wednesday night Tichon teen program classes on Jewish spirituality, meditation, mindfulness, and mysticism. CJS – no matter your age, there is an opportunity to deepen your Jewish spiritual life.

Monthly Rosh Hodesh Group is a Special Community for Women

Rosh Hodesh means “head of the month” and is celebrated usually with the start of a new moon. Led by Ilene Serlin, this is a special space for women to gather and speak from their hearts, to share stories, and connect through song, dance, and readings. The group studies the kabbalastic theme for the month and meditate on its mystical and psychological meaning.

As longtime CKS member Bonnie Weiss describes it:

We appreciate ach other for the gifts we each uniquely bring, from poetry to art to accumulated wisdom and earnest self exploration. This is a welcoming place for new women who are exploring their relationship to Judaism and our wonderful hosting synagogue!

Two long-time membersof our community are leaving

We thank them for their many years of service!

Jonathan Emanuel wasKol Shofar’s Director of Youth Education & Family Programs for six years and shaped the lives of countless children in Marin.

For more than three decades, Todd Silverstein was the primary prayer leader, the shiliah tzibbur, for Kol Shofar’s High Holy Day services, lifting our prayers with energy and exuberance
