Campus Ministry seeks nominations each year from theology teachers, administrators and those who serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion within the school, as well as their parishes and parish personnel. In addition, parish pastors also approve those selected to serve.

Among the qualities needed for selection include being known for their good Catholic manner of living and for their service to school, parish and community. In accepting the invitation, they committed themselves to continuing to strive to be worthy of this office, to cultivating their devotion to the Holy Eucharist and to living as examples to the faithful of their reverence for the most holy Sacrament of the altar. (Adapted from Immensae Caritas, January 23, 1973, by the Sacred Congregation for the Discipline of the Sacraments, Part 1).

Their primary role is to assist the ordinary ministers of Holy Communion - Bishops, priests and deacons - in the

distribution of Holy Communion to the faithful during the celebration of Mass.

The Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion were commissioned during the All Souls Mass on November 2nd - as witnessed by our students, faculty and staff and many of their families. In addition to distributing the precious Body and Blood of our Lord at school Masses, these students will also have the opportunity to serve at Chapel Masses and distribute blessed ashes on Ash Wednesday to begin the celebration of Lent.

on Sunday, April 24, 2016, from 4-7 p.m. at Kevin Lehman’s Pottery & Lancaster Creative Factory.

Eric Rempe credits longtime LCHS teacher Dick Ressel for a rewarding and successful career as a ceramics artist and educator.

“For more than two years, my high school art teacher, Dick Ressel, challenged me with questions and projects. Because of his influence, I ended up pursuing a B.F.A. in Ceramics at Penn State University under Chuck Aydlett, David Dontigny and Chris Staley.”

Rempe continued his education and earned an M.F.A. in Ceramics from San Diego State University and a B.S. in Art Education from Penn State University. With a desire to share the gift he received in high school, Rempe became the ceramics teacher at Coronado High School is Coronado, California. His program had 150-180 students enrolled in ceramics every single year.

Coronado Island is an affluent community across the bridge from downtown San Diego. Despite having that flashy Cali-fornia shine, San Diego, like other major cities, is home to many people who struggle to put food on the table. According to Rempe, it was important to him that his students understood that even though these people didn’t live on the island, they were still part of the com-munity and they (his students) needed to respond to that need.

In 2007 Rempe brought Empty Bowls to Coronado High School. Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to raise both money and awareness in the fight to end hunger. It was originally started by a high school teacher in Michigan in 1990.

Coronado ceramics students created and donated their bowls each year. Restaurants donated soup and for $20 guests would enjoy soup, bread and water. Guests then take home the empty bowls as a reminder.

In 2007, the students raised $4,500 and by 2015, they made 1,500 bowls and raised more than $32,000 in that year alone. Overall, they were able to raise $150,000 and provide a half-million meals in San Diego.

Rempe wanted the students to see first-hand where the money was go-ing and the impact that it was mak-ing in the community, so he took his students each year to work at The Hunger Project in downtown San Diego. There, 30 of his students would feed approximately 800 people in two hours. Many of the students continued to volunteer at The Hunger Project.

“Remembering to appreciate all that we have and to give of yourself when

an opportunity arises is an ongoing message to share with students.” Rempe recently returned to the East Coast to be closer to his family. His new studio is located in the wooded farmland of Hammonton, New Jersey.

Now a ceramics teacher at Camden County College at the Blackwood Campus, and also at the Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown, New Jersey, Rempe con-tinues his involvement with Empty Bowls at the Perkins Center for the Arts where there is an established Empty Bowls project.

LCHS Student Design Selected by Bishop Gainer

A little spark of inspiration can lead to great accomplishments. For Grace Ringlein, that spark led to the creation of a design that was selected by the Most Rev. Ronald W. Gainer in his annual Christmas card contest.

Longtime art educator Dick Ressel asked students to list possible design ideas and inspirations. According to Ms. Ringlein, “The design wasn’t something I thought I would seriously do, it was just one random idea on a long list Mr. Ressel had us write (Thank you, Mr. Ressel), but as it developed I was pretty excited with it.”

Bishop Gainer receives Christmas cards from other bishops throughout the world. Inspired by the hand-delivered, ornate cards, in 2010 Bishop Gainer asked students in the Lexington Diocese to design a Christams card depicting the birth of Jesus Christ. The Bishop received 500 entries that year and a fifth grader was

The Serteen Club will be collecting gently used coats for the annual Coat Drive. Any usable coats, scarves, hats, and mittens will be accepted. All donations are sent to dry cleaners and then distributed to those in need through the Salvation Army. Coats may be dropped off in Mr. Sharp’s room, 217, from December 1-11.

honored by her card’s selction. The tradition of students designing the Bishop’s Christams card now continues with the first card selected by the Bishop of the Harrisburg Dioscese.

Miss Ringlein’s card will be sent by Bishop Gainer to thousands of friends and colleagues.

When asked about Ms. Ringlein’s selection, LCHS Principal Terry Klugh commented, “Grace is a very talented artist and this is a great honor. She truly deserves to have her work seen by so many people on the Bishop’s Christmas list. I know Grace is humbled by this honor, but

again, it is richly deserved. Grace is a true example of how LCHS educates the whole person – her talents and accomplishments are many and varied (she is student of the quarter as well!).

Mr. Ressel concurred, “Grace is a combination of intelligence, talent and dedication. The work she created is equal to, and in some cases surpass, the designs of many professionals. Her Christmas card has a sophisticated elegance that I am certain the Bishop is delighted to use for his Christmas greeting.”

LCHS plans to create cards using Miss Ringlein’s design, as well as several other designs created by fellow students. In addition to the selection, Miss Ringlein will join Bishop Gainer for a luncheon at the Harrisburg Diocese in December.

LCHS and D & M Recycling Partner to Support Students and Our CommunityLCHS and D & M Recycling have partnered to provide gently used clothing and shoes to those in our community and support LCHS students at the same time.

Currently, there are two recycling containers located on the LCHS campus to deposit gently used clothing and shoes tied in plastic bags. However, we are searching for businesses to place additional recycling containers throughout the community.

For every business willing to locate a recycling container on its property, like a parking lot, D & M Recycling will make a financial contribution to LCHS in the name of the business and D & M Recycling.

In addition, LCHS will post an interactive Google Map on our website of the locations of all specially marked recycling contrainers and post the businesses and locations on our social media outlets.

Contact Joe Sahd ‘01 with any qyestions or to arrange for a recycling container to be placed at your business. Call the Advancement Office at 717-509-0313.
