Since graduation in July 2000, my career has accelerated beyond any of my initial expectations. Within five years, I went from a marketing position to a CEO position.

I believe that the Sloan programme is an incredible catalyst; firstly in terms of building self-confidence and the trust in your own abilities, and secondly in the way others perceive you. Being a London Business School Sloan alumnus gave me credibility with headhunters, clients and the market. The programme gives you the capacity to feel confident when approaching any business issue in any company, regardless of whether you are a specialist in that area or not.Jean-Christophe Bedos (French) Sloan Fellow 2000 Current role: President and CEO, Birks & Mayors Pre-Sloan role: Marketing and Purchase Director, Cartier France

    The curriculum has five elements:

    Strategic perspective

Sloan core courses deliver strategic perspective and explore how this knowledge can be harnessed to improve organisational performance. As you progress through the core courses, you develop a new mindset and a series of tools and techniques that allow you to build winning teams, make better business decisions and develop robust strategies. You increase your ability to adjust as the world changes around you and to develop with the needs of your organisation.

The following is an introduction to the core courses:

    Corporate Governance

Reflect on your future as a senior executive, board member, owner or stakeholder in the changing landscape of corporate governance.

    Corporate Finance

From the viewpoint of a senior manager, this course looks at capital allocation, external financing, risk in the corporation and in financial markets, leverage, strategic options, company valuation, corporate governance, and executive compensation.

    Global Business Environment

Macroeconomic factors exert a significant impact on the business environment whether it is sudden events like the subprime mortgage crisis, or long-term changes brought about by globalisation, new technologies and the launch of the European single currency. Understand the changes caused by these developments, their implications for different sectors, and the likely response of governments to these forces.

    Executive Leadership

Understand the knowledge, skills and attributes required for effective leadership, and maximise your personal impact through enhanced insight and skill. Obtain individual feedback using assessment instruments and work one-to-one with an experienced coach to develop a personal action plan.

    Management Accounting for Performance Measurement

Use better measurement to improve your decision making and drive performance. Examine organisational performance measures, such as cost control and economic profit, and explore the different ways of setting useful performance targets.

    Managing People and Organisations

Understand and acquire the critical leadership skills to build and sustain competitive advantage through people. This course focuses on achieving your strategic goals by leveraging the intellectual capital and unique abilities of your workforce.

    Marketing

Marketing is the process by which a firm creates value for its customers and captures a share of that value for itself. Since customers are the principal driver of revenue, a marketing perspective is essential for determining the strategy of the firm, and is therefore a leadership responsibility as well as a functional specialisation.

    Strategy

Drawing on insights from the other core courses, this course examines what makes for good strategy and how you formulate it. Examine how to position a firm effectively against market forces and shape these to your advantage; how to build the resources and capabilities essential to maintaining and strengthening market position; and how to link strategy to action at the level of day-to-day activities.

    Understanding Top Management

As a top manager, how can you bring your influence to bear on the world within and beyond your organisation? How can you do so in a way that gives full expression to what you stand for personally and professionally?

    Biography

This unique and innovative course helps you to think constructively about your career and life transitions, and gain control over your future career as a leader. You look outward, at the lives of leaders and notable historical figures, and inward at your past choices and future trajectories. The aim is to reinforce your ability to creatively adapt to change through insights into yourself, others, and the contexts around you.

As a senior leader tackling organisational challenges, you need a set of skills that will enable you to effectively lead change and set strategic direction to drive the performance of your organisation.

My approach to leadership and teamwork was changed by my learning at London Business School. The first week we spent on leadership issues was a real eye-opener and provided valuable insights on group/organisational dynamics, but more importantly it gave me insight into my own strengths and weaknesses. As I am confronted by leadership and strategy issues, I refer back to the tools provided in the core courses as a firm starting point.Dan Harasemchuk (Canadian) Sloan Fellow 2010 Current role: General Counsel, ETX CapitalPre-Sloan role: General Counsel, Baikal

    Global business insights

The week-long International Assignment focuses on the impact of economic events on the business environment, the changes brought about by these developments, the repercussions for different sectors, and the potential responses for firms and governments.

Recent years have seen the Sloan class visit Shanghai.* The growth of China is clearly reshaping the world economy with important implications not just for global business, but also for individuals and firms. Through lectures, company visits and debates, you begin to develop your own view on growth prospects for this region, and how these trends will affect your career path going forward.

Working in small teams, you visit different companies, both national and multinational, explore the concerns of local business leaders, and are briefed by government representatives and resident academics. Some of the worlds leading players have welcomed Sloan Fellows to join them for in-depth company visits to discuss the key issues facing their organisations and country. Previous companies visited have included: Maersk, Cadbury, Coca Cola, HSBC, J.P. Morgan, Shanghai Stock Exchange and Standard Chartered Bank.

Accommodation, transfers and some subsistence is included in the tuition fees.

*It is each Sloan Fellows responsibility to organise their own visa. Should you be unable to obtain a visa for China you will be offered the opportunity to attend an alternative International Assignment.

Explore the themes of development and globalisation first-hand in a dynamic economic environment, and consider their implications for yourself, your organisation and the world economy.

The Management Report enables you to integrate what you have learnt on the Sloan programme and apply it to an issue concerning an organisation or industry.

Guided by a faculty member, the Management Report is a substantial piece of work that requires you to integrate theory and practice, as well as effectively using the knowledge and tools introduced on the programme.

    Significant payback

Many company-sponsored Sloan Fellows complete a project on a problem concerning their own organisation, delivering significant payback and often relating it to their future role. Sloan Fellows have also used the Management Report as a way of building expertise, reputation and networks within a sector that they are looking to move into post-Sloan.

    Past topics have included:

n the growth of social networking sites and the implications for marketers

n a business plan for a new mobile telecoms company

n achieving prosperity in post-conflict Chechnya

n knowledge transfer in a multinational corporation

Without any formal business training or commercial experience, I enrolled on the Sloan programme to learn the language of the business world. The most valuable takeaways are the self-discovery process and the lifelong friendships with fellow Sloans established over the year. I have also made many useful contacts in London (and in Hong Kong) through the Schools networks.

The Sloan programme equipped me with the skills, and more importantly the confidence, to reinvent myself and to lead a very different lifestyle.Rachel Chan (British) Sloan Fellow 2006 Current role: Founder and Chief Catalyst, InnoFoco Pre-Sloan role: Director of International and Corporate Marketing, Hong Kong Trade Development Council

The Sloan programme was undoubtedly a powerful learning experience for me. But the programme was not just about getting a first-class business education and developing my skills and knowledge. As a full-time course, it gave me the opportunity to really review my career goals and consider new challenges. Sloan gave me fresh stimulation, ideas and perspectives on strategy and leadership. All this, and a unique network of fellow Sloans, was invaluable as I branched out on my own as an entrepreneur after the programme.Per Regnarsson (Danish) Sloan Fellow 2006 Current role: CEO and Managing Partner, Clean World Capital Pre-Sloan role: Assistant General Manager, Danske Bank

    Where are they now?

Christopher Woolard (British) Sloan Fellow 2005 Current role: Partner, Ofcom Pre-Sloan role: Director, Postal Services, Department of Trade and Industry

The Sloan experience gave me the chance to consider what leadership means to me and provided me with the skills and knowledge to challenge the status quo and be decisive when it matters.

Seven years on, I am still using many of the techniques from Sloan every day. Perhaps more importantly, as the public sector faces major challenges in the UK, I feel I have a strong base of skills to help lead my organisation through difficult times. Long-term, the impact of Sloan for me can be summarised in one word confidence.

Kok Kong Chan (Malaysian) Sloan Fellow 1997 Current role: Partner, Egon Zehnder International Pre-Sloan role: Senior Manager, Global Corporate Finance, Arthur Andersen

The Sloan programme was a life-changing experience. It broadened my perspectives and opened doors that I had not previously imagined.

The content was relevant, my student peers were interesting, and we all worked hard while having loads of fun. It broadened my knowledge across all facets of business management and opened my eyes beyond a career that was previously deeply finance focused.

The course is still paying dividends. It connected me, and continues to connect me, with a large number of highly capable people who are successful in their own right. This is of at least as much, if not greater, value as the content of the programme itself.

Michael Azlen (Canadian) Sloan Fellow 1994 Current role: Founder and CEO, Frontier Capital Management Pre-Sloan role: Vice President, Equity Derivatives, CIBC World Markets

The Sloan programme, and the entrepreneurial electives available at London Business School, were the ideal combination for me. The programme was the right choice and I feel I have received an excellent return on my investment.

My most valuable experiences came from learning from other Sloans in my class. You are in a class with a huge amount of experience across a wide range of cultures and industries. This experience and diversity results in a dynamic learning environment and I would estimate that I learned at least as much from my classmates as from the material on the programme.

Paul Benson (Australian) Sloan Fellow 2000 Current role: CEO and Managing Director, Troy Resources NL Pre-Sloan role: General Manager, Renison Goldfields

Although the Sloan programme requires a large investment of time and money, I do believe the rewards often cannot be achieved by normal career progression. I have been able to get and succeed in roles that I do not believe would have been offered to me had I not completed the Sloan programme.

The most important single change I experienced has been the confidence to talk about complex business problems at the most senior levels within an organisation. I know early in my career there were times when I kept a view or idea to myself, particularly in the face of an aggressive colleague or super confident management consultant. Today, I have the skills and confidence to put my point of view across.

Douglas Grieco (American) Sloan Fellow 2004 Current role: Senior Director, Global Brand Design, W Hotels, Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Pre-Sloan role: President and Founder, Take Branding and Design Consultants

I am now leading the global expansion of a boutique hotel chain. Sloan allowed me to move into this position and enabled me to lead and manage within an international corporate context.

The programme helped me leverage my core strengths while filling in my managerial gaps. It enabled me to translate my experience in architectural design and as an entrepreneur into an approach that has allowed me to successfully develop a global brand. Finance, marketing and strategy are all key to building a brand, but none of it is possible without people, their belief in a vision, and their belief in themselves. Sloan gives you the leadership skills to turn a shared vision into reality.

The programme undoubtedly has a superb curriculum and great faculty, but the most valuable takeaway for me was the interaction with other Sloans, and the continued dialogue and network.

Barbara Domayne-Hayman (British) Sloan Fellow 2000 Current role: CEO, Stabilitech Pre-Sloan role: European Market Development Manager, Syngenta

I came to Sloan with a marketing background in agrochemicals, having worked in a large organisation for more than 10 years. After two entrepreneurship electives and meeting entrepreneurs in class, as well as visiting venture capitalists, I decided to combine my chemistry doctorate with my business experience and move into the biotech sector.

Following two roles of increasing responsibility in other biotech companies, I am now CEO of an early stage vaccines technology company. If it had not been for my time at London Business School, it would not have occurred to me to work in a small entrepreneurial company, let alone run one! Sloan opened up a new world of possibilities for me, and gave me the confidence to go for it. My class also provided me with a group of wonderful friends all round the world.

Seyi Ajibola (Nigerian) Sloan Fellow 2007 Current role: General Manager, Nigeria Exile Resources Pre-Sloan role: Manager, Business Development/Local Content, Devon Energy

Before applying to Sloan, I had been finding it difficult to make the step into senior management positions with either whole asset or country responsibilities. I had the track record, dedication and drive to step into the roles, but I also knew I needed some leadership tools. Sloan ticked all the boxes for me. It delivered the peer group, content and contacts that have allowed me to land my current position with both asset and country responsibilities. I finished the Sloan programme much richer for the experience and insights, and much more confident in my own capabilities. I also made some fantastic friends along the way.

    A range of activities

The Sloan experience is often as much about networking and building lifelong friendships, as it is about the academic challenge. The Sloan social calendar ranges from major events such as the Winter and Summer Balls, to lunchtime barbecues with live music on campus during the summer term. Every week during term time, students, faculty and staff enjoy drinks at Sundowners, which is sponsored by companies and consultancies. There are also sporting and social events, allowing you to expand your network, participate in the vibrant School community and have fun.

    Partners

The Schools Partners Club recognises the commitment of Sloan partners and the importance of their support. It provides a network that helps ease the transition and assists families to adapt to a new city. The club promotes a community in which information, friendship and emotional support are provided through workshops, social gatherings and cultural events.

The School organises social events throughout the year in which partners and children can become involved. Sloan Fellows regularly organise activities for themselves and their families on campus and around London. These include barbecues, picnics in Regents Park, ice skating, karaoke, Diwali celebrations and national food evenings, as well as a range of other ad hoc events.

    Active student clubs

There are more than 60 student clubs at the School, including professional interest clubs in areas such as consulting, emerging markets, energy, entrepreneurship, family business, investment management, media, responsible business and technology. The clubs are a great opportunity to build your network, and also provide industry education, skills development and recruitment opportunities.

    Engaged alumni community

Sloan alumni become lifelong members of an international network of more than 35,000 truly exceptional contacts, friends and potential colleagues. The social side of Sloan

Compared with MBA programmes, Sloan cohorts are more mature with a great deal of previous industry experience. I have been impressed with the networking opportunities, the guest speakers and my peers on the programme. These people will become not only friends, but also good mentors in my life.Wataru Tamura (Japanese) Sloan Fellow 2010Current role: Senior Manager, Business Development, APAC and JAPAN at ServiceSource Pre-Sloan role: Account Manager, Hewlett-Packard Japan (sponsor)

    A vibrant capital

An international centre for business, politics, education, entertainment, fashion, media and the arts, London is an extraordinary city and a great place in which to live and study. One of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, London is home to a diverse range of peoples, cultures and religions, with more than 300 languages spoken every day.

    Help and advice

The Sloan programme is an intensive experience both academically and socially. You join a group of talented and experienced people from whom you will have much to learn and with whom you will have much in common. The School provides plenty of activities to help you and your family build a social network while you are here. Even before you apply, you may find it useful to speak with a student or alumnus who has also made the move to London. Please contact the School to arrange this.

We recommend that you allow yourself plenty of time for your relocation to London and to get settled in before the programme begins. As soon as you have accepted your place on the Sloan programme, you have access to advice and information on moving to London. Portal, the Schools intranet, gives you immediate access to the Schools community and discussion forums, as well as to a range of classified adverts for everything from flat shares to furniture.

Portal also provides information on topics such as:

    n visas

    n travelling to London

    n London hotels

n finding accommodation for the duration of the programme

    n finance and banking

    n travelling around London

    n healthcare

    n schooling and childcare.

    Visas

The Sloan programme is a full-time Masters degree so, if you are a non-EEA national, you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK. The School will issue you with the relevant documentation once you have accepted a place on the programme. We encourage you to read the UK visa entry guidelines and have the most up-to-date information to ensure your visa application goes smoothly and in good time for the start of the programme.

For information about applying for a UK full-time student visa, please visit the UK Border Agency website: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/studying/

    Living expenses

The fees for the Sloan programme do not include living expenses, which vary according to your circumstances and lifestyle. Typically, for the duration of the programme, you should budget approximately 28,00043,000 for a family, or 21,00027,000 for a single person in shared accommodation.

London is an exciting place in which to live and study. If becoming a Sloan Fellow means relocating to London, and possibly bringing your family with you, you have additional rewards and challenges ahead.

    Moving to London

Bringing my family to London for the Sloan programme was a great experience. London is a fantastic place for families, with many parks, museums, castles, zoos and farms in easy reach. The biggest unexpected bonus was the way my child, Isabel, blossomed. She arrived from Mexico a shy three year old and finished the year with perfect English pronunciation and social skills. The other unexpected bonus was the support from the Sloan class during difficult times and the friendships not only with me as a Sloan, but with my whole family.
