    Layout of Transportation Engineering Lab:

    • Objective: The objective to study the layout of the Transportation Engineering lab is to get

familiar with the dierent equipments and machines placed in the lab. And to

understand the working of these instruments and there practical implementation in

     Transportation system.

    • Ring and Ball softening point Apparatus: t is used to note the softening point of !ituminous materials. "oftening. The

reason for measuring the softening point is that the bituminous materials don#t

have speci$c %elting point. point is that temperature at which the specimen

under test becomes soft enough to allow a steel ball of speci$c dimension &'(

mm) to fall a required distance under test condition

    Saybolt Viscometer:

This apparatus is used to determine the *onsistency and +iscosity of !itumen

and to study the +ariation of viscosity with Temperature.

ortable s!id resistance Tester: This instrument is used to check the skidding. !eing portable this instrument

can be taken anywhere for testing. After measuring the skidding precautionary

measures are to be taken. t is found that the skid resistance of roads, highways

starts decreasing as its open to tra-c.

enaterometer:t is used to classify the bitumen as "oft or hard bitumen depending upon the

penetration into the material. enetration is noted when /00g needle

penetrates into the bitumen for (seconds.

Los Angeles Abrasion "ac#ine: This instrument is used to determine the resistance of coarse aggregates against

wear i.e. resistance of coarse aggregate to impact1 in a rotating hollow cylinder

having steel balls, spheres. This machine consists of a hollow steel cylinder closed

at both ends that is supported by shafts on two sides. The cylinder rotates about

a2is of shaft in hori3ontal position. An opening is provided to introduce the

material into the hollow cylinder which must be closed during testing.

$uctilometer: This machine is used for determination the ductility of bituminous materials by

measuring the elongation before breaking when two ends of specimens are pulled

apart at a speci$ed speed and temperature. %oulds $lled with bitumen are installed

in the machine1 with one end $2ed other end is moved on opposite side at a speci$c

rate &( cm,min). t is recommended that the sample must not break or sagged down

    before /00 cm elongation.

%ine sieve s#a!er:  t is used for the sieve analysis of $ne aggregates.

    Electric Oven:

It is used to dry the aggregate samples and its capacity to heat the samples is up to 20000C.

    Asp#alt "i'er:

It is used to mix asphalt with aggregates for mix design purposes.

    %an circulate oven:

It is used to find the bitumen loss on heating.

    Speci(c )ravity assembly:

t is used to $nd out the speci$c gravity of aggregates samples.

*eig#ing balance:  t is used to weigh the sample for various tests. t has capacity of 400g and

    5.* of 0.00/g.

     +leveland open +up ,as# point tester:

t is used to determine the 6ash point and $re point of bitumen. After passing 6ame

above the heated bitumen if bitumen catches $re for an instant then that point is

    called 6ash point.

"ars#all Stability mac#ine:  t used to $nd out the strength of samples of bitumen mi2 design.

    S#ape Testers:

    • 7lakiness 8auge

    • Elongation 8auge

The particle shape of the aggregate mass is determined by the percentage of flaky and elongated

particles in it. Aggregates which are flaky or elongated are reasons for weakness of mixes. For

determining flakiness index. article is flaky when its thickness !smallest dimension" is less than

0.# of the mid$si%e of the sie&e fraction. 'auge has se&en labeled slots for rapid hand trying of

particles from each of the se&en sie&e cuts. The mass of all flaky particles !passing appropriate

slots" as percent of the sample is the flakiness index

    Flakiness 'auge

     Elongation Gauge

Angularity -umber "ould:t is used to $nd out the angularity number of an aggregate specimen.

Angularity describes the absence of roundness. 9 A metal cylinder of about 4

liter capacity.Temping rod of circular cross9section1/:mm ;1 :0cm in length.

It is used for the sie&e analysis of coarse aggregates.

Electric Oven:It is used to dry samples. Its capacity to heat the samples is up to 2000 C.It is used to e&aporate the

    moisture of aggregates samples.
