Reilley specializes in window repair be- sides being a salesman. If some- one has a problem with their window or patio door, or needs parts, he can order and explain how to install and remedy the problem. Brad Hennen started build- ing pole sheds for the lumber company in 1999 and now he is the store’s post frame building specialist. Ed Vinkemeyer joined the crew in 2001 and the newest salesman at Maple Lake Lum- ber is Chad Shoberg. “You know you are doing something right when your em- ployees are staying for so long,” Kathy Hennen said. In addition to salesmen, Mike Lauer and Pete Piram man the front counter and are often the first people customers see when they walk in the door. Lauer has been with Maple Lake Lumber since 1971 and is also in charge of inventory. A couple more men loading and unloading inventory, several ex- perienced drivers including Al Huikko who’s been with the company for 43 years, and a number of other drivers make up the lumber yard’s 18-mem- ber staff. What they do Maple Lake Lumber sup- plies materials for big and small projects, for do-it-yourself types or as packages that in- clude contractor services. Maple Lake Lumber works with some of the best contractors around. “Some of our contractors have been with us for years. A few have been with us since we bought the business,” Kathy said. On their website maple- lakelumber.com customers can look at a variety of building products including doors, win- dows, moldings, stair parts, decking, siding and hardware. If you are more of a hands-on shopper, visit their showroom at their main building at 120 Oak Ave. South in Maple Lake to get a better look and feel. Showroom The showroom offers a peek at what your future home could look like with different selec- tions of interior and exterior siding with shiplap finishes, roofing, windows, patio doors, exterior doors, interior doors, moldings and decking. The deck display itself is composed of several different types of decking material and railing styles, including round spindle, square posts, aluminum and composite, so customers can see what each material looks like on an actual deck. “They can come here and see exactly what they will be get- ting. We’ve had a lot of cus- tomers come in with an idea for a deck, see our deck display and they decide they like something else better.” Customers can crank out the windows, walk through the doors or compare boards and trim in pine, maple, oak, and poplar and decide which one they like best. Some- times it comes down to favoring how the grain looks in one piece of wood over another.” Unlike some large chain stores, Maple Lake Lumber’s experienced salesmen are al- ways on hand with their special- ized construction knowledge waiting to answer questions and offer advice. At the same time the lumber yard’s prices are competitive and the materials they sell are all very high qual- ity. “We’ve had customers tell us ‘when I come here, I know I’m not going to get a crooked board.’” Overstock discounts Maple Lake Lumber has a selection of overstock items that they are willing to sell at dis- counted prices. The items, espe- cially windows and doors, come from projects where the cus- tomer changed their mind, or the item was ordered in the wrong wood, color or size. These items are put into over- stock and sold at a reduced price. “If you’re looking to replace a window or door at a bargain price, come in and ask and a salesperson can show you what we have,” Kathy encouraged. Customers can also view overstock items online at Maplelakelumber.com and on the company’s facebook site. Building is back “The building industry has definitely picked up again and that feels good,” Kathy said. Maple Lake Lumber serves cus- tomers all over the state of Min- nesota. Many of their jobs are through word-of-mouth refer- rals. Others are locals who are looking to build an “up-north” get-away. It’s all because of Maple Lake Lumber’s stellar reputation. A Distinguished past Kathy and Daryl have owned Maple Lake Lumber since 1992. In 1995, an extensive re- modeling project led to 8,300 additional square feet to the lumber yard’s main building. In 2005 they added the showroom. Today the lumber yard has 15 buildings, most of them on the south side of the railroad tracks in Maple Lake. Eighteen em- ployees help to keep the busi- ness running and customers satisfied, and many of them are also dedicated community members serving on Maple Lake’s Volunteer Fire Depart- ment. Father’s Day is a chance forpeople to show the special menin their lives just how muchthey’re loved. Though it wasfirst celebrated on June 19,1910, it was not until decadeslater that President RichardNixon made honoring fathers anationwide holiday in theUnited States.

While there are many differ-ent ways to honor dads, it hasbecome customary to offergifts and other tokens of affec-tion. According to History.com,Americans now spend morethan $1 billion each year on Fa-ther’s Day gifts.

Many modern fathers aremore involved in their chil-dren’s lives and around the

house than their own fatherswere. Gifts that cater to today’swell-rounded dads are sure tobe appreciated.

• Cool duds: Modern dadsare fashion-forward and mightenjoy a piece of clothing or agift card to their favorite re-tailer. If you know a storewhere Dad loves to shop, stopin for some inspiration.

• Pampering products: Momis not the only one who likes toindulge in some pamperingfrom time to time. Put togethera carefully curated basket ofmen’s grooming products, orpurchase a set from a bath andbody store like Lush.

• Fitness finds: If youhaven’t already gifted the spe-

cial man in your life with a fit-ness tracker watch, now is thetime to do so. Such a watchwill tap into his love of gadgetsand provide some utility as hetries to be as healthy as possi-ble.

• Cookbooks: The stereo-type that dads are hopeless inthe kitchen has long since beenrefuted. Many men are top-notch home chefs and will ap-preciate some new recipes totry. Combine the cookbookwith a new culinary tool, like acast-iron skillet or a mandolineslicer, so he can try out hisskills right away.

• Support the team: If Dad isa sports fan, find a baseball capor a jersey of his favorite

team/player. Many sportsstores only carry inventory forlocal teams. If Dad supports ateam in a different state orcountry, do your shopping on-line at a site like Fanatics.com.

• Craft beers: The craft beermovement has expanded expo-nentially in recent years. Visitwith a local brewer and pur-chase bottles or growlers of afavorite brew. If you know theflavor profile that Dad favors, find a beer that suits that pref-erence while also giving somenew varieties so he can put to-gether his own flight.

This Father’s Day, delvedeeper to find gifts that a dadwill truly love — even if heseemingly has it all.

Summer can fly by. Becausesummer can sometimes seem tocome and go in a flash, it’s im-portant for everyone to make themost of this relaxing time ofyear.

Vacations from work andschool are great ways to makesummer memories, and the fol-lowing are some ways to geteven more out of these relaxingbreaks from the norm.

• Disconnect for a few days.Truly disconnect from electronicdevices for a period of time togive yourself a mental break.Stop answering work emails, avoid social media and turn offreminders of things that do notneed your attention while youare on vacation or taking abreak.

• Book a trip. It’s not the des-tination but the opportunity tostep away from the norm thatcan help make a person feel likehe or she has truly gotten abreak. Get away from your sur-roundings, if only for a week-

end. Nearby resorts and waterparks are great for short jauntswith the kids.

• Take a week off just torelax. Sometimes a person needsto recharge after going on vaca-tion, as planning a trip and thenthe trip itself can require a lot ofwork. Staycations or devotinganother week to just loungingaround or catching up on tasksaround the house can ease pres-sure. Then it’s possible to goback to work or school feelingeven more recharged.

• Get out of the house or of-fice. What’s the good of sunnyskies and hot temperatures ifyou do not get to enjoy them?Make it a point to spend timeoutdoors every day. Go for amidday walk, sit in the parkafter work lets out or throw theball around with the kids in thebackyard. Sunlight can be greatfor the mind and body. Doctorswith the Heliotherapy, Light, and Skin Research Center atBoston University Medical Cen-

ter say sunlight triggers the re-lease of serotonin and other hor-mones associated with a goodmood. Increased exposure tosunlight also can regulate circa-dian rhythms for better sleep.Sunlight can trigger the releaseof nitric oxide into blood ves-sels, helping to lower bloodpressure.

• Explore summer programs.Adults and children can try newskills and explore different tal-ents this summer. Sign up for acamp or a class that runs severalweeks. This will help stimulatethe mind.

• Visit friends and family. Now that schedules have loos-ened up, take the opportunity toincrease time spent with friendsor family members, whetherthey live close by or far away.Make it a point to reconnectwith someone who has been outof touch.

Summer is a great time ofyear to take vacations and recon-nect with nature and loved ones.

Maximize your summer vacation this year

Vacations from work and school are great ways to make summer memories, and the follow-

ing are some ways to get even more out of these relaxing breaks from the norm.

Going on vacation oftenmeans throwing a little cautionto the wind and indulging hereand there on purchases or expe-riences a person wouldn’t nor-mally make at home. Accordingto a 2015 CBS News poll, theaverage American is entitled to16 days of paid leave each year, and the average Canadianworker 19 days. Such time off isan opportunity to fit lots of funinto a relatively short period oftime.

Frugal travelers may want tobe sure they’re spending theirhard-earned money in thesmartest ways. Traveling with-out breaking the bank enablesthe average person to take morevacations and continue to makeinvaluable memories.

Here are some suggestionson making a getaway, whether itinvolves lots of traveling orstaying close to home, more af-fordable.

• Be flexible. Travelers who

are flexible in their departuredates and times can usually findgreat rates because they have theability to shop price instead ofdate. Various airline websitesand travel discount servicesshow the average flight pricesacross several days. Frugal flierscan select the lowest price. Thesame can be true when bookinghotels and other vacation com-ponents.

• Pack light. Many airlinesnow charge extra for baggagefees — especially for suitcasesthat exceed the weight limit —so don’t bring along unneces-sary items. Hotels typically pro-vide toiletries for free, so savespace and money by removingsuch items from your luggage.Chances are if you didn’t packan item, you can still find an af-fordable alternative at your des-tination.

• Use coupons. Couponsaren’t only for getting cents offyour favorite brand of tissue at

the supermarket. Coupons anddiscount codes are available forjust about any purchase — evenvacations. Check all travel web-sites to see if there are any dealsto be had. Don’t overlook dis-counts related to your member-ship in clubs such as AAA orAARP or those linked to youralumni or military organization.According to RetailMeNot, hav-ing a social media account canhelp, too. Travel deal sites andairlines may post about flashsales.

• Plan meals. Look into eco-nomical restaurants before de-parting. Know where you’ll beeating and when, includingpacking a lunch or enjoying ahotel-provided breakfast. Enjoy-ing a big lunch can be more fru-gal than indulging on dinner.

• Rent small. If renting a car, choose the smallest model thatwill fit your needs. In addition, there’s no need to pay for a largeroom that you don’t plan to

spend much time in, so resist thetemptation to book large hotelrooms.

• Consider public transporta-tion. Investigate the publictransportation options at yourdestination. Such options maynot be as convenient as taxis, but they may be more economi-cal.

• Book based on currency.Stay abreast of currency ex-change rates. Such rates canmake a big difference in choos-ing a destination, particularly ifyour money will be worth moreinternationally. Also, try book-ing a vacation through the localcountry’s version of the sametravel site.

• Skip tourist hotspots. Talkto the locals to find out where toget the best deals. Try localfoods, brews and more for a costsavings.

Travel can be expensive, butsavings are possible when trav-elers know where to look.

How to save money on vacation

People who live in regionswhere winters are cold often notethe feeling of rejuvenation theyenjoy on the first warm day of late-winter or spring. The chance to getoutside and soak up some sun whilebreathing some warm air is a feel-ing unlike any other for those whospend much of their winters bun-dled up in layers of clothing.

The value of spending time out-doors extends well beyond dustingoff winter cabin fever, providinglong-term benefits that might sur-prise even the most ardent outdoor

enthusiast. A 2018 report from re-searchers at the University of EastAnglia found that living close to na-ture and spending time outside haswide-ranging health benefits, in-cluding a reduced risk for type 2 di-abetes, cardiovascular disease, premature death, preterm birth, stress, and high blood pressure. Au-thors of the report studied data fromacross the globe, gathering evi-dence from more than 140 studiesinvolving more than 290 millionpeople.

Researchers cannot pinpoint ex-

actly why people who spend ampletime in greenspaces enjoy betterhealth. However, the benefits ap-pear to be so wide-ranging as tosuggest that people who currentlydo not spend much time in green-spaces should make a concerted ef-fort to do so. The following are ahandful of ways busy individualscan start spending more time out-doors.

• Dine al fresco. On nights whenthe weather is fair, take dinner intothe great outdoors. People who livein private homes can dine on thepatio or on the deck in the backyard, while apartment dwellers can makeuse of local parks for nighttime pic-nics or dine on balconies or rooftoprecreational areas, which have be-come popular in crowded metro-politan areas. Rooftops andbalconies may not pass the “Is itgreenspace?” test, but dining insuch areas can be more relaxingthan an apartment dining nook.

• Get off the couch. Don’t hesi-tate to get outside when night falls.

Spend time in the backyard or gofor nightly walks around the neigh-borhood or in a nearby park. Say solong to television binging sessions, making healthier and more benefi-cial use of nightly free time by uti-lizing nearby greenspaces.

• Go hiking on weekends. Evencity dwellers no doubt live withindriving distance of local hikingareas. Hiking provides a host of car-diovascular benefits and can makefor a great, full-body workout. Re-searchers associated with the UEAreport suggested that the practice offorest bathing, which is popular inJapan and promotes spending timesitting down or lying in nature, ex-poses people to a diverse array ofbacteria present in natural areas thatmay benefit the immune systemand reduce inflammation.

People who think that accessing

nature is helping them to stayhealthy aren’t wrong. In fact, mak-ing time to include nature in your

daily or weekly routine can havepositive and wide-ranging effectson your overall health.

Getting outdoors really is good for you
