If you have an insurance need,

whether personal insurance or for

your business, the staff at Lake

Central Insurance Services is here

to help.

As a property and casualty

insurance agency, they can find

just about any coverage for yourhome and auto, along with all

your toys like motorcycle, boat,

snowmobile or ATVs. They also

write specialty insurance such as

umbrella liability, flood insur-

ance, disability income insurance

and dental insurance.

When businesses call, they

have insurance options for prop-

erty, liability, workers compensa-

tion, commercial umbrella and

group health. “We have several

companies that do well with

sole-proprietors up to larger cor-

porations,” proclaims Paul

Manuel, agency manager. “Busi-

ness insurance can be very com-

plicated, especially for those just

starting a small business. Weunderstand small business needs

and can help ease the anxiety of

the small business owner as they

start or grow their business.”

The staff at all three locations

in Maple Lake, Annandale &

Clearwater are Medicare certified

to be able to assist seniors with

their Medicare supplement and

Part D needs. They are willing to

answer questions about the

Medicare enrollment process for

people aging into Medicare, and

those who are looking at their

change options during the open

enrollment period each fall.

Along with Medicare supple-

ments, the staff is also certified

broker/assisters for the new

MNsure health insurance

exchange. They can answer ques-

tions and assist with the website

enrollment. They will also

explain the complicated process

of who and why some people

qualify for health insurance pre-

mium tax credits and others that

do not, as well as explain the

mandatory “Essential Benefits”

like pediatric dental. For those

who do not qualify for the Afford-

able Care Act (ACA) tax credits,

the certified and licensed agents at

all three locations can also helpyou acquire coverage with an Off-

Exchange health insurance plan

in the more traditional method of

purchasing health insurance cov-

erage.

Life insurance and long-term

care insurance are areas they are

experts in as well. “These are two

lines of insurance that people

tend to not want to talk about,

but are very necessary to help

protect your family’s financial

future,” says Manuel. “Seven out

of ten households do not have life

insurance, and those that do, typ-

ically have a benefit that would

only replace the lost loved one’s

income for 3.6 years.”

Long-term care insurance

could be even more necessary as

one out of two people will need

some form of long-term care in

their lifetime. “That is a coin flip

when you think about it,” states

Manuel. “I understand the cost of

this insurance can be expensive,

but ask anyone who has dealt

with a loved one needing some

form of care as they age and they

will tell you it is worth it com-

pared to the huge monthly cost

for that care.”

Manuel encourages everyone

to contact their office to discuss

new life insurance, review theircurrent life insurance to make

sure there is sufficient coverage,

or to find out more about long-

term care insurance. “Whether

you are our client or not, we

want to help people better under-

stand their current policies and

make informed decisions about

their financial protection.”

Another line of coverage Lake

Central Insurance Services han-

dles is bonds. Whether looking

for a probate, conservator or

fidelity bond, they can help.

They also write car-title and con-

tractor license bonds. They ask

you to contact them on any type

of bonds.

The agency itself is an Inde-

pendent Insurance Agency, mean-

ing they do not write insurance

for just one company. As an inde-

pendent agent, they have over 20

insurance companies to quote

your unique insurance needs and

find the best fit for you. Simply

put, they do the shopping for

you. They take great pride in

using a variety of companies to

build an insurance program that

works for you. The professional

staff has a genuine interest in

finding the right insurance solu-

tion for you. All being licensed

agents, anyone is able to answerquestions, quote coverage or han-

dle policy endorsements. They

pride themselves on their cus-

tomer service and invite you to

see why that makes relationships

work. “We are not just about

selling you an insurance policy;

we are about building relation-

ships,” says Manuel. “You put

your trust in us and we try to

honor that with great insurance

products and even greater cus-

tomer service.” With over 60

years of combined insurance

experience, t hey are professionals

who know insurance and what

works.

In 2012, they added Lake Cen-

tral Investments as a way to offer

more financial protection to

clients. John Volden is the

investment advisor and is avail-

able by appointment to meet

with people to discuss their

wealth management goals.

The office, in Maple Lake, isstaffed by Manuel, along with

Krista Wurm who has been

working in the agency for over

20 years. Krista started working

part-time while still at Maple

Lake High School when the

agency was called Security State

Agency of Maple Lake. She

loves helping people and always

has a friendly word or a smile.

In April of 2013, Anna Pribyl

came on board to start her insur-

ance career. Anna did not have

any insurance experience, but her

years of being a customer service

manager in a retail environment

was the thing that they liked

best. Manuel says, “Anna really

grasped the insurance industry

and products quickly and is learn-

the way she treated people. We

felt that was more important than

experience. With time, she will

gain the experience, but you can-

These are qualities she has and

you see that every day.”

Lake Central Insurance Servicesare qualities she has and you see

that every day.”

Technology and social media

are changing the way people do

business. “We encourage people

to stop into the office when pos-

sible, and they can always call

us. But, as social media keeps

evolving, we feel there needs to

be more ways to connect with

people,” says Manuel.

Lake Central Insurance Serv-

ices has met the social mediademand with a FaceBook page,

Twitter feed and their new Smart

Phone app. “We ask everyone to

“Like” our FaceBook page at

facebook.com/LakeCentralIn-

suranceServices for information

about the insurance industry and

safety tips, ask questions, be

part of discussions, and have

some fun,” states Manuel. “I

think this is a great way to put

information out there when

things happen, not just to our

clients, but to everyone.” The

FaceBook page can be seen by

anyone and is not just for Lake

Central Insurance Services

clients.

Another avenue to find out

information is via Twitter. You

can “Follow” them on their

Twitter feed @LakeCentral1.

“We are just getting into tweet-

ing, but feel this is a quick wayto share information to those

who follow us. It is also anoth-

er way to stay connected with

our clients.”

A big step for them in 2013,

as far as technology goes, was

getting a Smart Phone app. The

app is free to download on your

iPhone or Droid smart phone. It

is a way to instantly connect

you with any of their staff,

report a claim, request policy

changes or even locate the near-

est gas station, tow-truck or

hotel. The app has a GPS loca-

tor to display your location

when calling in an emergency.

The Smart Phone app is free and

not just for clients, and is avail-

able at the iStore or Play Store

depending on your cell phone.

“This is a neat tool for anyone’s

insurance needs. I encourage

people to check it out. Futureupdates will let you store your

personal home inventory and

photos of documents so you can

easily access them away from

home or in the event of a home-

owner’s insurance loss.”

The office in Maple Lake is

located on the corner of Birch

Avenue and Division Street in

downtown Maple Lake. They

also have an office inside Annan-

dale State Bank in both Annan-

dale and Clearwater. For more

contact information, go to

Manuel adds, “Insurance is

sometimes a necessary evil and

we try our best to help ease the

pain and frustration of insur-

ance. I personally say Thank

You to our past, current and

future customers for putting

their trust in us. We look for-

ward to helping any way we

can.”

Various symbols and

imagery breathe life into St.

Patrick's Day celebrations. Inaddition to Kelly green cloth-

ing, leprechauns and Irish

flags, shamrocks are common-

ly seen decorating homes and

people.

The word "shamrock" comes

from the Irish seamrog, which

is the diminutive form for the

Irish word for clover, and trans-

lates roughly to "young

clover." Clover is a grass-like

plant, and bees frequently use

clover flowers as a prime

source of pollen for honey pro-

duction.

Three- and four-leaf clovers

are a stable of Irish imagery

and are commonly referenced

upon the arrival of St.Patrick's Day. Prior to Christi-

anity and the work of St.

Patrick, the Druids believed

that they could thwart evil

spirits and danger by carrying a

shamrock. A three-leaf sham-

rock would enable them to see

the evil spirits and escape in

time. A four-leaf clover was

said to ward off bad luck and

offer magical protection. The

Druids helped establish theclover as a Celtic charm, and

other folklore indicates clovers

helped people see fairies and

chase the little sprites.

Around 400 AD, in many

areas of the world, including

Ireland, pagan beliefs were

being pushed out in favor of

Christianity. The Irish were

slowly converted to a new

method of thinking, and this

included a new way of looking

at some once-popular Pagan

symbolism. According to

Christian teachings, Eve is said

to have carried a four-leaf

clover out of the Garden of

Eden when Adam and she were

cast out by God. Some believethat those who grasp four-leaf

clovers hold a bit of paradise in

their hands. Some Christians

also thought clovers were a

symbol of the Holy Trinity,

and some stories suggest that

St. Patrick used a shamrock to

teach principles of the Trinity

to the masses. A three-leaf

clover represents the Father,

Son and Holy Spirit. Should a

four-leaf clover be found, it isconsidered the Trinity plus

God's grace. The four-leaf

clover looks like a cross, giv-

ing four leaf clovers special

meaning to some people.

Of course, the rarity of

four-leaf clovers makes some

people who find them feel as if

luck is on their side. Among

naturally occurring clovers, the

odds of finding a four-leaf

clover instead of the more

common three-leaf clover is

10,000 to 1. It may take some

effort and quite a bit of luck to

locate one with four leaves,

and a five-leaf clover is consid-

ered by many to be unlucky.

Since the 18th century, theshamrock has been a symbol

of Ireland. It was used as an

emblem by rival militias and

later was incorporated into the

Royal Coat of Arms in the

United Kingdom, alongside the

rose of England and thistle of

Scotland.

 Why are shamrocks considered lucky?

Spring is a season of

rebirth for many people, who

welcome the warm weather

with open arms, especially

those who just endured a

harsh winter. Spending time

outdoors when the weather

warms up is a popular pas-

time for many people each

spring.

Road trips taken by col-lege kids or high schoolers

hitting the road for spring

break or professionals and

parents packing up the car for

a weekend getaway have

become synonymous with

spring. A road trip is a great

way to get outdoors and make

the most of a warm day, but

there are a few tricks of the

trade drivers can employ to

ensure their road trips are as

enjoyable as possible.

• Give your car a good

wash. Drivers who live in

areas with heavy snowfall

should give their vehicles a

thorough cleaning before hit-

ting the road for a spring road

trip. Salt and sand can build

up on a vehicle over the

course of a snowy winter, so

a power washing will help

remove excess salt, sand or

dirt and help the car run moresmoothly.

• Get the vehicle a tune-

up. A tune-up, including an

oil change, should be part of

your pre-trip planning. Make

sure winter hasn't caused any

damage to the vehicle's body

and ask your mechanic to per-

form a thorough inspection

of the vehicle's suspension

and brakes. If any problems

arise, address them before

embarking on your road trip.

• Subscribe to a roadside

assistance program. Roadside

assistance programs, whether

it's AAA or a program offered

through your insurance com-

pany, provide a measure of

security to road-trippers.

Many roadside assistance pro-

grams provide a variety of

emergency assistance for

members, including:

- towing service if yourvehicle cannot start or oper-

ate safely,

- battery service if your

car's battery needs a jump,

- flat tire service if you

get a flat tire and don't have a

spare or cannot change the

tire yourself,

- fuel delivery service if

your car runs out of gas, and

- lockout service if you

lock your keys in the car.

These services can act as

a safety net should an issue

arise when you're on the road

and far away from home or

far away from a service sta-

tion. Keep your membership

card in your wallet and store

their customer service num-

ber in your cellular phone

should you accidentally lose

your membership card or lock

it inside your car.

• Bring cash as well ascredit cards on the trip. When

embarking on a road trip,

don't assume you will have

ready access to an ATM on

your trip or at your destina-

tion. This means you may

reach a point when you have

no cash on hand. While it's a

good idea to bring some cash

along on the trip, bring a

credit card or cards as well

should you find yourself with

no cash. A major credit card,

such as a Mastercard, Ameri-

can Express or Visa, is likely

to be accepted at most filling

stations.

• Invest in a road naviga-

tion system. A road naviga-

tion system can be your best

friend, helping you find your

way in places with which

you are unfamiliar. R oad nav-

igation systems can alert you

to traffic conditions while

providing directions and alter-

nate routes. Some systems

will even alert you to nearby

filling stations, lodging or

restaurants.

Road Trip Tips for Spring Drivers

A road navigation system is a good investment for drivers about to embark on a road trip.

With spring on the horizon,

the opportunity to once again

use ingredients synonymous

with spring is upon us. Such

is the case with the following

recipe for "Prosciutto, Toma-

toes & Peas" from Biba

Caggiano's "Spaghetti Sauces,"

(Gibbs Smith), which employs

spring shallots to pack a fla-

vorful punch for a light dish

that's ideal for a warm spring

night.

Prosciutto, Tomato and

Peas Serves 4 to 6

• 1 1/2 pounds unshelled fresh

peas or 1 10-ounce package

frozen peas, thawed

• 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

• 1/2 cup minced shallots

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 5 to 6 fresh plum tomatoes,

minced

• Salt and freshly ground pep-

per, to taste

• 1/4 pound sliced prosciutto,

diced

• 1 pound spaghetti

• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 1/2 cup freshly grated

• Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese

1. Shell the fresh peas and

cook them in a medium

saucepan of boiling salted

water until tender but still firm

to the bite, 3 to 4 minutes.

2. Heat the oil in a large skil-

let over medium heat. Add the

shallots and cook until lightly

golden and soft. Add the garlic,

stir once or twice, and then add

the tomatoes. Season with salt

and pepper and cook until the

tomatoes begin to soften, 4 to

5 minutes. Add the prosciutto,

stir for a minute or two, and

then add the peas. Stir until the

peas are heated through. Turn

off the heat.

3. Meanwhile, cook the

spaghetti in boiling salted

water according to package

directions.

4. When pasta is almost done,

scoop up and reserve 1/2 cup

of the cooking water. Drain

spaghetti and add to the skillet.

Add the butter and mix quickly

over low heat until pasta and

sauce are well combined. Add a

little of the reserved cooking

water if needed. Taste, adjust

the seasoning and serve with a

little sprinkle of the Parmi-

giano cheese.

Fresh pasta perfect for spring
