He not only teaches history, he practices it.Richard Pedova is a history teacher at Northern EssexCommunity College, and on July 4th, he led a group ofcitizens into a trip to the past. He made the 50 plusparty goers gathered at the Heritage State ParkVisitors Center, relive an 1800 style, 4th of Julycelebration in the City of Lawrence.

As part of the day celebration, Padova calledthe meeting by ringing a bell as they did in the olddays, before he walked the citizens in a shortprocession around the Visitors Center lead by thecolors of the Lawrence Civil Guard Memorial.

The event ended with a patriotic sing-along,children’s game competition and a light lunchsponsored by Boston Market.

Visitor Center, recibimos una valiosa lección dehistoria.

Allí nos enseñaron que la primera celebracióndel 4 de julio en Lawrence sucedió en el año 1848.Que una campana era usada para atraer al público acelebrar la ocasión y que después de izada labandera, el alcalde de la ciudad y los oficialeselectos, leían la Declaración de Independencia.

Es para sentir satisfacción cuando alguiendedica de su tiempo a mirar en el pasado, porepisodios que tal vez ocurrieron siglos atrás ytraerlos a las nuevas generaciones para su disfrute.

Nuestro agradecimiento a Richard Padova porun trabajo bien hecho y al Lawrence Heritage StatePark Visitor Center por haberlo presentado.

A lesson inhistory

On July 4th, 2006, at the Heritage State ParkVisitor Center, we received a valuable lesson inhistory.

There we learn that the first 4th of Julycelebration happened in Lawrence in 1848. That abell was used to summon people to the occasionand after the raising of the flag, the Declaration ofIndependence was read by the mayor and cityofficials.

It’s very rewarding when somebody takes thetime to search into the past, episodes that happenedcenturies ago to bring them out to the newgenerations to enjoy.

Our thanks go to Richard Padova for a workwell done, and to the Lawrence Heritage State ParkVisitors Center for hosting it.

On Tuesday, July 5th, ValleyWorksCareer Center of the Merrimack Valleyannounced the beginning of theSummer Jobs Program 2006, at a meetingheld at the Lawrence Public Library.

In a written statement, VWCCannounced that at least, 116 youth fromLawrence, Methuen, Haverhill andSalisbury will perform jobs in child care,recreation, office technologies, retailtrade and landscaping. Youth will work8 weeks, during the summer, working20 hours per week and earning $8.00per hour. 63 of those jobs will go to theCity of Lawrence.

Two employment coaches wereassigned to visit Lawrence High Schooland the Greater Lawrence TechnicalSchool, to pass information about thesummer job program to the studentsand more than 300 applied.

The program, sponsored byGovernor Mitt Romney has thecooperation and support of the citymayors of Lawrence, Haverhill,Methuen and Salisbury.

The City of Lawrence choseseveral students to work for the cityand the school department. Otherplaces where the students will work willbe, Community Development, Planningand Development, Personnel, Finance,Veteran’s, DPW, Police, FireDepartment, Cemetery, MIS, SeniorCenter, OSD, Mayor’s Office and CityCouncil.

Some nonprofit organizationswhere youth will perform are: YMCA,YWCA, Boys and Girls Club, C.L.A.S.S.,Inc., Northeast Independent Living andLawrence Housing Authority.

La pérdida de un hijo representa paracualquier madre sin dudas un dolordesgarrador y un vacío que jamás se lograllenar. Pero es más triste cuando quedan milinterrogantes alrededor de una muerte, quepudo haber sido evitada.

Este es el caso de Nancy Tavarez quienrecibió un fuerte golpe, cuando le dijeronque su hijo de apenas 20 años decidióquitarse la vida.

Francisco Carrasquillo, quien fuediagnosticado hace dos años con laenfermedad bipolar, definido por quienes loconocieron como un muchacho alegre,popular, tierno y juguetón, recibía SSI y vivíade forma independiente desde diciembre delpasado año en un apartamento y era tratadoen el Health and Education Services de estaciudad de Lawrence.

Son muchas las preguntas que parecenno tener respuestas ante el suicidio de“Frank White” y más cuando, no obstantea que en más de una ocasión le manifestó asu madre que no se sentía bien y que elestrés le estaba afectando, lo cual leprovocaba angustia y una sensación dedepresión.

La condición bipolar es unacombinación de episodios de depresión yepisodios de manía o hipomanía. Ladiagnosis de bipolar I se da cuando ladepresión se combina con episodios demanía, y la diagnosis de bipolar II cuandose combina con hipomanía. El trastornobipolar resulta de alteraciones en las áreasdel cerebro que regulan el estado de ánimo.Durante los períodos de manía, una personapuede ser demasiado impulsiva yenergética, con un sentido exagerado deautoestima; mientras que la fase depresivatrae consigo sentimientos abrumadores deansiedad, baja autoestima y pensamientos

suicidas.Recuerda Nancy que una semana

anterior a la de su muerte Frank tenía unacita con su médico, visita que hacía cada 15días para que se le administrara unainyección, como parte de su tratamiento.“Ese día en el centro no tenían elmedicamento, por lo cual nos dijeron queregresáramos al siguiente día, donde se laadministraron”.

A sugerencia de su hijo, Nancy condujoa Frank al hospital, en particular al Centrode Salud Mental. “La enfermera los envióal Centro de Crisis, ahí un especialista hablócon él, y estuvimos en ese lugar por casi 4horas, y nos dijeron que no, que el joven nonecesitaba quedarse en el sitio, y queentendían que el caso no lo requería”.

No obstante a lo que dijeron,Carrasquillo seguía insistiendo que se sentíadepresivo y muy estresado, lo quemanifestaba a su madre una y otra vez.

El siguiente martes el trabajador socialque llevaba su caso fue a visitarlo y decidióllevarlo al Centro, para que le asistieran, sinembargo nuevamente se negaron a dejarlorecluido, alegando que no había camadisponible, mandándolo de regreso a suapartamento, ubicado en el 660 de la calleHaverhill.

Por su condición, Frank recibía SSI ycada jueves le entregaban un cheque poruna cantidad de 60 dólares, para cubrir losgastos de su alimentación, y asimismopagaban la renta y los gastos de lasutilidades.

Entre estas actividades seofrecerán interpretaciones musicales,cuentistas, titiriteros, clases de baile,clases de figuras de barro y un programaespecial de parte del Museo de Cienciasde Boston. Este programa especial, el cualserá titulado “Night Sky” y comenzará alas 6:00 pm el día 7 de agosto en nuestroauditórium. Este contará con planetariospequeños, los cuales los niños podránutilizar para observar el cielo durante lanoche. Este programa será uno divertidoy educacional para nuestros niños. Nopierdan esta oportunidad y traigan a sushijos para que tomen parte de todas estasactividades divertidas y gratuitas.

Tuve una experiencia bien interesantela semana pasada, cuando la compañíade Tutor.com me pidió que participara enuna llamada de conferencia donde yo leexplicaría a otras bibliotecarias de la costaEste, como nosotros en Lawrenceimplementamos este sistema en nuestrabiblioteca. En estallamada tuve la oportunidad de hablar conpersonas en Nueva York, Canadá,Carolina del Norte, etc. todos interesadosen la estrategia de colaboración entre labiblioteca y el Departamento deEducación de nuestra ciudad. Ellospiensan utilizarnos a nosotros comomodelo para introducir este sistema en

sus comunidades.Como les mencioné anteriormente, la

biblioteca está trabajando para crear unplan de largo plazo. Nuestra meta es detener este plan completo para el 1ro deoctubre. Para obtener esta metanecesitamos ayuda de la comunidad.Algunos de los empleados estaráncreando una encuesta la cual estarádisponible para el público en la biblioteca,en nuestra página de Internet y en variossitios a través de la ciudad. A través deesta encuesta nosotros obtendremosinformación necesaria para nuestro plande largo plazo. El sábado pasado se dedicónuevamente el Veterans Memorial Stadiumen el Sur de Lawrence, al cual tuve elprivilegio de asistir. Fue una ceremoniamuy conmovedora, especialmentecuando nuestros veteranos marcharonjuntos con sus respectivas ramas delservicio. Fue una manera bonita de laciudad de demostrar su agradecimiento anuestros hombres y mujeres que sirvieronvalientemente a nuestro país durante laSegunda Guerra Mundial, Corea, Vietnam,Operación Tormenta del Desierto,Afganistán e Irak. Hay que darle créditoa todo aquel que trabajó en la planificaciónde este evento. El estadio quedómagnífico y es otra obra de la cual todosdebemos de sentirnos orgullosos.

Al tomar sus vacaciones, no seolviden de para aquí y tomar prestado algopara “leer en la playa.” ¡Nos vemos en labiblioteca!

Las actividades organizativas para elVII Desfile Dominicano en Lawrence,marchan con celeridad luego que pasaranunos meses que no se daban a conocerpúblicamente los trabajos que se estánrealizando.

El cuerpo de “Frank White” como lellamaban sus conocidos estuvo expuestoel pasado jueves en la Funeraria Farrah.Al día siguiente, a las diez de la mañanase llevó a cabo una misa de cuerpopresente en la iglesia Saint Mary y recibiócristiana sepultura en el CementerioBelleview.

La familia pidió a aquellas personasque estaban considerando enviar flores,que en su lugar hicieran una donación ala Funeraria Farrah y agradecen a todosaquellos que lo han apoyado en estosmomentos de tanto dolor, en particular alos amigos que por iniciativa propia sededicaron a recolectar dinero y de estemodo ayudar a una madre que crió sola asus tres hijos: Richard y Carl (gemelos) ya su pequeño Frank, quien se marchó sindespedirse de sus seres queridos.

En nuestra primera entrega sobre estetema que encierra en sus dos palabras,armonización y canalización de energíaenfocamos dos puntos importantes, loprimero aclarar la falsa creencia de que estaciencia tiene algún tipo de conexión conmagia negra o vudú y segundo que el FengShui tiene como objetivo principal evadirtodo aquello que tenga el sello denegatividad, ya sea la proveniente delentorno o de la mala energía, que pordesgracia fluye de ciertas personas.

La estrecha relación que guarda estaantiquísima ciencia con la espiritualidad esclave para poner en práctica, y con gratosresultados, su base teórica y filosófica.

Para Patricia Valley, quien el pasado 23de junio presentó su tesis en el“New England Center for Feng Shui andIntuitive Arts”, ubicada en la ciudad deTyngsboro, entiende que la errónea idea deciertas personas de que el Feng Shui, estáunido a la Santería, se debe simplemente, aluso de los términos energía y limpieza deespacio.

“Es tal la falta de información que hayrespecto a esta ciencia, que existen personasque dicen, ‘yo no creo en eso; solo enDios’”, dijo.

La limpieza de espacio no es más quetrasmutar la energía y llevarla a unadimensión mucho más alta, es decir es sacarla negatividad y colocar la positiva.

No obstante a que en la actualidadexisten distintas escuelas o enfoques delFeng Shui, todas consideran que la mismaparte de tres aspectos o coordenadas: lasFormas, la Orientación y el Tiempo.

No hay que tener, según Valley unMaster en esta ciencia oriental, para sentirla energía, hay lugares donde uno se sientebien o por el contrario se siente mal.

“Ahí es cuando entra en juego laenergía, por ejemplo hay sitios donde tú note sientes bien y de donde quisierasescapar”, apuntó.

Con frecuencia los seres humanostransportan esa mala energía, la cual llevanconsigo a otros lugares, o suele ocurrir queésta permanece en un espacio, porque huboanteriormente alguien ocupando eseespacio, que no la llevó consigo.

Asegura la especialista en Feng Shuique por lo general la energía va con elpensamiento, “las paredes son como

esponjas, que lo absorben todo, porejemplo a una residencia puede entraralguien con cualquier pensamiento, que talvez no está dirigido a tí, pero como unequipaje, deja la mala energía detrás”.

La limpieza de espacio se puederealizar de distintas maneras o utilizandodiferentes elementos, como son lossonidos, la música, oraciones, ángeles oarcángeles.

En cuanto a los cinco elementos queinteractúan de modo cíclico en el Feng Shui,que los entendidos en la materia llamantambién: Cinco Energías o CincoMovimientos, no solo se utilizan en el FengShui, sino además en la medicinatradicional, en la poesía, y hasta en laguerra.

Un poco de historiaLa doctrina de los Cinco Elementos se

cree popularmente que ha sido expuestapor primera vez por Tsou Yen entre 350 y270 A.C. Entretanto, estudios recientesindican que ese hecho no es verdadero,pues tal sistema es evidente en las másprimitivas formas de adivinación China. Seacomo fuera, existen dos ciclos principales:el ciclo constructivo y el destructivo. Sinembargo, algunas personas piensanerróneamente que sólo existen estos dosciclos pero no debemos descuidar que enla interrelación de estos dos ciclos existen36 ciclos.

En el ciclo constructivotenemos la siguientegeneración de los elementos:

Madera quema, produciendo Fuego,de cuyas cenizas se forma la Tierra, ydentro de ella se condensa el Metal, queexpulsa así el Agua, de la cual brotaMadera. O sea: Madera alimenta al Fuego,que genera Tierra, que engendra Metal,que genera Agua que nutre la Madera.

En el Ciclo Destructivo, cadauno de los elementosdestruye al otro:

El Agua apaga al Fuego, que funde alMetal, y este corta la Madera que agota laTierra, y esta absorbe el Agua. Significaque Madera controla a Tierra, Tierracontrola Agua, Agua controla a Fuego,

Fuego controla a Metal, Metal controla aMadera.

Los nombres utilizados, ciclosconstructivos y destructivos, no deben serentendidos en su significado literal.

Patricia Valley ha preferido tener unacertificación y hacer las cosas de maneralegal, para ofrecer su primer seminario sobreesta ciencia, la que se apresta a realizar elpróximo mes.

“Mi principal objetivo es crear

conciencia y educar a la comunidad sobrela realidad que encierra el arte milenariodel Feng Shui y los elementos que estánal alcance de las personas en la gente, loque permite disfrutar más favorablementede las energías del planeta”, agrega Valley.

No obstante a que esta filosofíaoriental se aplica en la decoración deinteriores y exteriores, a la arquitectura, ala jardinería, a la combinación de colores,su enfoque fundamental está dirigido a quelos seres humanos encuentren y disfrutende una energía positiva y aprendan amanejar la armonía y a equilibrar latranquilidad.

Finalmente la experta en Feng Shuidestaca que en los talleres o seminariosque piensa ofrecer los participantestendrán la oportunidad de aprender atrabajar en las nueve áreas de vida y abalancear los cinco elementos: agua, metal,fuego, madera y tierra.

Cada espacio debe contener cada unode ellos, pero de forma balanceada, “nomás de uno ni menos de otro”.

Las áreas son: Prosperidad/Abundancia, Salud, Familia, Conocimiento,Benefactores, Fama, Carrera, RelacionesPersonales y Creatividad de los niños.

On Wednesday, June 14, the MerrimackValley YMCA honored its 2006 “Reach Outfor Youth” annual campaign volunteers andleadership donors at a cocktail receptionheld at Palmer’s Restaurant and Tavern inAndover.

Campaign Chairperson Michael S.Mancuso of Andover shared the successof this year’s campaign which, to date, hasraised more than $200,000, up from $170,000at this time last year and an additional$600,000 through special events, grants andother public funding to support ourprograms and to provide financialassistance to those in need. The “ReachOut for Youth” Campaign allows the YMCAto assure that no person is turned away fromYMCA programs or membership becauseof financial hardships. Mr. Mancuso said,“Thanks to your leadership and theinvestment of others like you, programs

The evening’s guest speaker wasAnthony Silvestro, a mentor in the YMCA’sTeen Achievers Program. He spoke of hispersonal fulfillment in seeing young peoplegrow during the course of the school year.He reflected on the special people in his lifewho acted in the role of mentors during hishigh school years. “I feel that the Y’sprogram is a way for me to give back and tohelp a young person, much like I was helpedin high school,” he said.

Mr. Silvestro mentors Danny Rodriguezwho shared with the attendees his personalstory. Danny just graduated from LawrenceHigh School. Because of the nurturing andhelp he received from the program, andspecifically Mr. Silvestro, he is on to apromising college career at CentralConnecticut State College. “My mentor hasbeen there for me every step of the way. Iappreciate his time and concern,” DannyRodriguez said.

The Massachusetts Cultural Council has awarded the prestigious John and AbigailAdams Grant to a new initiative supporting arts-based economic development in theCity of Lawrence. Live Lawrence! brings our cultural community together with localbusinesses to create fun and exciting opportunities to sample the city’s diversity, meetnew people, and enjoy food, shopping and the arts.

The 2006 program will include a series of Traveling Cafés in Appleton Way next toCity Hall that transforms the brick courtyard into an open air café, market andperformance space.

The dates of the Traveling Cafes are July 13, August 10 & Sept. 14. They areseeking performing artists as well as visual artists to perform/exhibit at the cafes. Artistsinterested in participating in these cafes are asked to contact Hilda Ramirez at 617-818-6842 or [email protected].

AN INTRODUCTION TO PASTELPAINTING


The parents of children at the AsianCenter in South Lawrence have beeninvolved in a Parenting and Family LiteracyProgram since January. The programinvolves parents attending classes fourtimes a week with a follow-up class withtheir children. The program is free and opento parents and their preschool age children.It will be offered again in September, 2006.

Are you interested in taking ESLcourses? NECC offers both academicpreparation courses and adult basiceducation courses in ESL. To find out moreabout the English language courses for non-native speakers, come to the Lawrencecampus of Northern Essex CommunityCollege on Wednesday, July 19 from 6:00 to7:30 p.m. for an ESL information session.

New and potential students will havethe opportunity to learn about ESL coursesand talk with ESL staff as well asrepresentatives from the college. In addition,there will be a short presentation on thebasics of applying for financial aid at NECC.

Hello Rumbo readers. Summer ishere, school is out and our summerreading program is beginning. Allthrough July and August, the children’sroom and the teen services librarian willbe offering entertaining programs, craftsand fun goodies almost every day.

Among the activities offered will bemusical performances, storytellers,puppeteers, a dance workshop, a hands-on clay modeling session, and a specialprogram from the Museum of Science inBoston. The latter program, “Night Sky”will start at 6:00 on August 7th in ourauditorium. It will feature miniplanetariums for the children to observethe night sky and should be both fun andeducational. Be sure to get your kidsinvolved in all of these fun, free events.

I had an interesting experience lastweek. I was asked by Tutor.com to run aconference call meeting with libraries upand down the east coast explaining howwe, in Lawrence, got the tutoring programinto our library. (For those of you whoare new readers of this column: Tutor.comis the free on-line, one-on one after schoolhomework help/tutoring programavailable to all students in Lawrence from4th grade to college prep level. For moreinformation talk to our referencedepartment.) I had people on the line fromNew York, Canada, North Carolina, etc.all interested in Lawrence’s collaborativestrategy with the school department as amodel for introducing Tutor.com intotheir own communities. It sure feels niceto see our community set up as a modelfor others to follow.

As I mentioned in my last column,

the library is creating a new long rangeplan. Our goal is to have a plan completedby the 1st of October and we will beneeding community input. Some of mystaff and I will be putting together asurvey which we will make available hereat the library, on our website, and invarious key places in the city. We reallywant to know what services you want fromus and what is the best way to make newservices, and ongoing ones, available tothe whole community. The survey shouldbe ready around the middle of July and Ihope you will all take a moment tocomplete it. This is a real opportunity tohave your voice heard. Remember, this isthe Lawrence Public Library and we workfor you.

Last Saturday I had the privilege toattend the rededication of VeteransMemorial Stadium in South Lawrence.The ceremony was extremely moving,especially seeing all our city veteransmarching together with their respectivebranches of the service. It was a niceway for the city to show gratitude to themen and women who have served ourcountry bravely in World War II, Korea,Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan andIraq. Credit to all who had a part inplanning the event. The stadium looksfantastic. It is great to have such abeautiful structure as the first thingpeople now see when coming off Rte. 495into Lawrence. It is something else togive us all pride.

As vacations begin, remember tostop by and get your summer “beachreading.” See you at the library.

My wife Michelle and I recentlyreached a milestone. For the first time in 11years, none of our children are attendingthe Arlington School. When our daughterMelanie, co-valedictorian for her class,received her certificate of completion,Michelle’s eyes welled up with tears. Icouldn’t tell if it was pride or sadness but Iwas keenly aware that I was feeling both.Our children literally grew up at theArlington. Desiree, our oldest, will bestarting her senior year at Essex Aggie whileDavid is a sophomore at Greater LawrenceTech. Melanie, an honor student since thefirst grade, will join the first class to attendthe new Lawrence High School.

Melanie’s last day at the Arlington wasan eventful one. The graduating eighthgraders gathered in the morning for anaward ceremony. Each “house” gave awardsfor academic achievement in math, science,writing and humanities. Melanie receivedthe Math Department Award, as her oldersister did three years before. What stuckme most about the awards ceremony washow impressive these students were. Theyoung man who came to Lawrence from theDominican Republic and couldn’t speakEnglish just two years before, yet he wasreceiving a writing award, the humanities

award recipient who spoke with moreeloquence than many women twice her age.That evening, at the graduation ceremony,more awards were handed out. Melaniereceived the Dr. John Barry award, anotherhonor, another trophy on the shelf.

But many students received awards,and many students graduated with honorsand what became clearer as I reflected uponthe past 11 years was that the ArlingtonSchool has been unfairly labeled. TheArlington isn’t filled with illiterates, withtroubled students, staffed by uncaringteachers. It is a school that takes in thehighest number of new immigrants to ourcommunity. It is the school with the highestnumber of special needs students. It is theschool located in the poorest neighborhoodin Lawrence. It is the school that providesshelter to community members driven outof their homes by fire and flood.

It is the school that provides a meetingspace for community groups. It is the schoolthat is staffed by some of the most talented,caring and dedicated teachers andadministrators I have ever met.

I cannot say how my children willremember the Arlington School. I know theywere all sad to leave. I know they were wellserved by the teachers and staff and were

ready for the challenges of their freshmanyear. I know that many of the friendshipsthey formed there still exist. Michelle and Iremember the school as a safe andwelcoming place. A place of learning whereour children joined thousands of others inthe often arduous process of growing intoadolescence.

I remember the bustle of parent teacherconferences and open houses seeing many

parents who spoke little English, sometimesrelying on their own children to translate. Iremember seeing the pride in the faces ofchildren who excelled. I remember a schoolthat is so much more than an arbitrarynumber derived from a one-size-fits test. Iremember a school that I am proud of bothas a parent and a citizen of Lawrence. Iremember a school that is anything butunderperforming.

Greater Lawrence Technical School’sCommunity Service team was under a lot ofpressure when they took their state gold-medal project to the national contest, theSkillsUSA Championships, held in KansasCity, MO June 19-24. After all, this was theschool’s fourth trip to nationals, and theyalready had two national silver medals andcame home with gold in 2005.

Team members Kirssi Gonzales, SuhaitiVilla and Miseal Abreu, all of Lawrence, leftthe Andover school feeling nervous, butcame home jubilant, clutching gold medalsand scoring 480 out of a possible 500 pointsin the contest. This was the highest scoreever logged in the national CommunityService competition, according to GLTSchapter advisors Ilene Karnow and LindaCote.

Topped 52 Other TeamsFifty-three teams from all over the

country competed at either the secondaryor postsecondary level. The GreaterLawrence team won the only gold medalspresented. (Four teams received silvermedals and 17 were given bronze medals.)Medals were presented in Kansas City’sKemper Arena on June 23; more than 12,000people attended the awards ceremonies.

“It was a rush, with all these camerasflashing,” Miseal said. “I felt like a celebrity,”Kirssi noted. Suhaiti “could only look down– I couldn’t look out at all the people.” Allthree noted the “really heavy medals –much heavier than at states.”

The competition three days earlierincluded a 10-minute presentation withprops and slides, plus the submission of anotebook detailing all aspects of theirproject, a community service to benefit theLazarus House shelter in Lawrence, amonths-long effort that involved studentsfrom all of the school’s 17 career areas.

Kirssi Gonzalez was a returning teammember, part of last year’s winning team.She said she “felt the pressure after winninggold in 2005.” New team member SuhaitiVilla said she arrived Monday night“nervous, and we were competing the verynext day.” For Miseal Abreu, “I didn’t knowwhat to expect.” So the team burned themidnight oil practicing, including a newsection that had just been added thatdetailed their efforts at Lazarus House afterthe May floods and their presentation andproclamation at the State House in Bostonfor their state gold medal.

Oh No, Not AgainAs they waited in the hallway just

before going on, they went over their parts– each student had to present one-third ofthe material – and checked out the computer.It wouldn’t turn on, which gave them allpause, since the computer had frozenduring their state presentation. This was adifferent computer but that didn’t seem tomatter. “Oh, no, this isn’t happening again,”Miseal said he was thinking. Fortunately,the problem was only a battery that wasn’tfully charged, so the unflappable teamsimply plugged in to the house electricity,and proceeded to give the performance oftheir lives.

The GLTS Community Service team’sproject was “Spring into Service,” and

detailed their efforts to use student skillsand talents to benefit Lazarus House. Thethree Allied Health juniors, along withGreater Lawrence students from all 17-careerareas in the school, volunteered tocontribute on-site services to LazarusHouse. They repaired, sanded, and paintedtwo porches; engaged in cleaning andlandscaping, including making picnic tablesand planters; made and distributed Easterbaskets and participated in an Eastercelebration for the children in the facility’spre-school center; ran a canned food drive;and served meals. They also assisted withflood cleanup.

More CompetitorsWith a top national score and gold

medals, what do these members of the GLTSClass of 2007 want to do next? At GLTS, theCommunity Service team typically does notinclude seniors because of the busyschedules of grade 12 students, who areapplying to colleges, working in co-op jobsor apprenticeships, and engaging in senioractivities.

Both Suhaiti and Miseal said theywould use this achievement and recognitionto help their college applications. But theyaren’t done with SkillsUSA. Kirssi wouldlike to compete “in something else,”

possibly her Allied Health skill area, in whichshe won a district bronze medal last year, oranother leadership or presentation category.

“We wish more students from ourschool would be involved in SkillsUSA. Wedon’t think either the students or theteachers are aware of how big SkillsUSA isor what kind of experience it offers,” saidMisael. Kirssi says she “tries to tell as manystudents that I can that they should go andcompete.” All three said they would like theopportunity to speak to students at anassembly in the freshman year.

The SkillsUSA Championships is theshowcase for the best career and technicalstudents in the nation. Contests beginlocally and continue through the state andnational levels. An international competitionis held every two years. Nationally,SkillsUSA is a multi-million dollar event thatoccupies a space equivalent to 11 footballfields. In 2006, there were 5000 contestantsin 88 separate events. Nearly 1,500 judgesand contest organizers from labor andmanagement make the national eventpossible. The philosophy of theChampionships is to reward students forexcellence, to involve industry in directlyevaluating student performance and to keeptraining relevant to employers’ needs.

The fiscal 2007 state budgetapproved by the House ofRepresentatives includes more than $147million in aid to Lawrence, much of itdedicated to schools and non-profitorganizations, State RepresentativeWilliam Lantigua (D-Lawrence)announced.

“This was a good outcome,”Lantigua said. “My colleagues and I havebeen working for months to ensure thatLawrence received the state money itneeds to adequately fund a wide range ofprograms and services. We can alwaysuse more, but to see so many of ourrequests given consideration byleadership is very satisfying.”

Lawrence Public Schools receivedmore than $123 million; an increase ofnearly $6 million over last year’s total,while Greater Lawrence Technical Schoolreceived $19.5 million. Lawrence will alsoreceive a share of $300,000 earmarked toestablish “Campaign for Proficiency,” astatewide program to help improve MCAStest scores necessary for high schoolgraduation.

Casa Dominicana, a community andcultural education program, saw itsfunding increase from $60,000 to$125,000. Lawrence Learning Center andCommunity Services, which offers after-school, ESL, and GED classes, wasawarded $100,000, up from $60,000 infiscal 2006. The New England PuertoRican Alliance was level-funded at$125,000.

Food for the World Pantry received$105,000, nearly double last year’searmark of $53,000. Neighbors in Need,another advocacy group providing foodto the city’s disadvantaged residents, wasgiven $100,000. The YWCA of GreaterLawrence received $100,000 for health andwellness programming.

Arlington NeighborhoodAssociation, a community developmentcorporation focused on creating a safer,cleaner environment, received $60,000.The Project Adventure Youth LeadershipProgram administered by Family Service,Inc. was awarded $50,000.

The House approved a one-timeexpenditure of $43,700 to purchase 24personal computers, one for each ofLawrence’s polling stations. Volunteerswill use information stored on themachines to assist voters with questionsabout their eligibility and to help themfind the appropriate place to cast theirballots.

Lantigua noted that funding for threeLawrence organizations was included inthe supplemental budget released earlierthis month, including $1,000,000 for OurHouse for Design and Technology,$66,000 for Greater Lawrence CommunityAction Council’s Spanish Program, and$13,622 for Lawrence Senior Center.

“As I promised when I was entrustedby the people to represent them in theState House, I’ll do everything I can tomake sure that our community receivesthe funding it needs,” Lantigua said. “I’mkeeping that promise by continuing towork hard on behalf of the Great City ofLawrence.”

At this week’s Age Group NationalChampionship meet in Federal Way,Washington, seventeen Andover-NorthAndover (ANA) YMCA Synchers teammembers took home top ten honors. Overone thousand athletes participated at thismeet, the nation’s largest synchronizedswimming competition. ANA wasrepresented by 34 swimmers in 14 eventswho qualified for the national meet becauseof their high rankings in local and regionalcompetitions.

On Wednesday night, June 28th, ANA’s14-15 year old athletes swam their way to 9th

place in final round competition. Performingto a rock and roll version of the Nutcrackerballet, swimmers were Amber Blum (No.Andover); Sheila Cremin (Andover);Rebecca Ely (No. Andover); JessicaMancini (Andover); Erica Potts (Andover);Claire Rudder (Sudbury); Emily Stone(Andover); Molly Trerotola (Andover); andEmily Ingram, alternate (North Andover).

Not to be outdone by their youngerteammates, on July 1, ANA’s team in the 18-19 age group flipped, twisted, and glidedtheir way to 10th place in a very intensecompetition between many talentedathletes. Swimming in a dramatic routinechoreographed to music from the Prince ofEgypt soundtrack, team members includeMeaghan Arsenault (Methuen); AshleyCohen (Andover); Maggie Conlon(Methuen); Stephanie Garcia Restrepo(Billerica); Rita Gillan (Andover); CharlotteGorski (Manchester, NH); Kelly Mahoney(Andover); and BethO’Connor (Andover).

Gillan and GarciaRestrepo also paired upto take a bronze medal inthe 18-19 duetcompetition. They alsoposted the event’shighest combinedtechnical figures scores.Individually, GarciaRestrepo earned 5th placeand Gillan took a 6th placein figures, which are

combined with routine scores to determinefinal placement.

Garcia Restrepo also joined teammatesCohen and Conlon in 16-17 trio competition.Their dynamic and fast-moving performanceto the music of Beethoven earned them a 4th

The Massachusetts Department ofPublic Health, Center for EnvironmentalHealth’s Childhood Lead PoisoningPrevention Program (CLPPP), incollaboration with the GLCAC, Inc., MVLead Poisoning Prevention Program willbe holding their “Annual Lead Fiesta”,Wednesday, July 19, 2006. The AnnualLead Fiesta is held yearly to encouragecommunity members to play an active rolein keeping children safe from lead paintdangers by understanding and complyingwith the Massachusetts Lead Law.

The Lead Law protects childrenunder six years of age who live in a homebuilt before 1978. Tenants with childrenunder six years of age should talk to theirlandlord about lead paint. A landlordcannot evict or refuse to rent to familieswith children because of lead paint. Thisis discrimination.

Preventing childhood lead poisoningrequires the cooperation of the entirecommunity. Property owners have aspecial responsibility to protect childrenfrom lead poisoning. Owners of propertywhere children under six reside shouldhire a licensed lead inspector to test thehome for lead paint. If there is lead paintin the home, the property owner musthave it removed or covered by anauthorized person.

El Yankee Clipper Council de los Boy Scouts deAmérica, llevaron a cabo una reunión informativa en elSenior Center, el 29 del pasado mes de junio. El Council estáinteresado en atraer a niños de Lawrence y ha establecidouna asociación con distintas iglesias y congregaciones delárea.

Durante esa reunión algunos pastores y representantesde iglesias estuvieron presentes para auxiliar a los padrescon los formularios de participación. Los padres fueroninformados que ellos son responsables de adquirir losuniformes.

La participación en los Boy Scouts es un programa delaño entero para niños de 11 a 17 años de edad. BoyScouting es un programa de diversión al aire libre, deoportunidades de liderazgo y una exploración personal decarrera, ficción e intereses personales, todo diseñado paralograr los objetivos de fortalecimiento de carácter, buenaforma física y ejemplar ciudadanía de los Boy Scouts deAmerica.

Miles de líderes voluntarios, tanto hombres comomujeres están envueltos en el programa de Boy Scouts.Ellos sirven en una variedad de trabajos – desde directoresde unidades hasta presidentes de los comités de tropa,

During that meeting, several pastors andchurch representatives were on hand helpingparents filling out forms of participation. Parentswere informed that they are responsible for theuniform acquisition.

Boy scouting is a year-round program forboys age 11-17. Boy Scouting is a program of funoutdoor activities, peer group leadershipopportunities, and a personal exploration of career,hobby and special interests, all designed to achievethe BSA’s objectives of strengthening character,personal fitness and good citizenship.

Thousands of volunteer leaders, both menand women, are involved in the Boy Scoutingprogram. They serve in a variety of jobs —everything from unit leaders to chairmen of troopcommittees, committee members, merit badgecounselors, and chartered organizationrepresentatives.

At the end of the evening, some of the 25children who attended the meeting, accompaniedof their parents learn different games, typical ofScouts.
