WHATS ON

Page 2: Launch Issue 1

The biggest social media project Ely has ever seen and likely to see is still growing stronger day by day and now we have taken the decision to become completely environmentally friendly.

Just take a look at the Facebook stats from the last 7 day opposite.

As you can see this week alone we have nearly 100 new followers and we have reached in excess of 80,000 people with nearly 15,000 engaging with what we do.

But the vast numbers do not stop there!!

We have a website too. We regularly have 2000 visitors per day and now try to post about 6-8 stories a day.

The events section is ever growing, we have so far listed over 3,000 events and publicise them through our Facebook Group which itself has a further 3000 members.

And now our vacancy section, well that grew in days to 2000 followers, all ‘looking for’ or ‘listing’ work.

The numbers astound us every day. Stories we write get numbers we just cannot believe sometimes but we don’t make them up out of thin air. These are all recorded by Facebook and our WordPress partners. We could say we get 10,000 copies printed but do you know how many read it? At Spotted in Ely we only use channels that allow us to monitor real numbers.

YOU CAN USE THESE TO YOUR ADVANTAGE.Businesses need to promote and we have just the tool for you to do it and we’ve dropped the prices right down to make them affordable.

Running Spotted in Ely is a full time job for 1 and part time for another and till now we have done this voluntarily and have loved doing it but that doesn’t help with the bills. The site itself costs us hundreds of pounds a month to run just in the software and hardware we use and the travelling around.

So here’s a deal for your business I think you are going to want to get involved with. We have 3 levels of sponsorship, you decide which is best for you:

Sponsorship Deal 1: £35 for one week. You get a logo on nearly every page of the website which can be clicked through to any website or social media site of your

choice plus you get one story onto the Spotted in Ely Facebook timeline during that week and when available, a free quarter page advert into our new upcoming weekly E-Magazine. We do not carry over missed story timelines so be sure to use within the week you pay for.

Sponsorship Deal 2: £25 per week (minimum 4 weeks). All of the same as deal 1 except half page adverts in the E-magazine but with a minimum period of 4 weeks.

Sponsorship Deal 3: £20 per week (minimum 12 weeks). All of the same as deal 1 except half page adverts in the E-Magazine but with a minimum period of 12 weeks. £25 per week if you want full page.

Your site sponsor logo dimensions are fixed at 175px wide by 100 px tall. Magazine sizes will be sent to you on production.

We do not include any graphic work done in the deals above although we can do this for you for an additional fee.

We have done E-Magazines in the past and found it has been viewed in excess of 16,000 times. We want to increase that to 20,000.

So there is the new easy deal system we are running on Spotted in Ely. For more information email [email protected] today.

What a spectacle in Ely75 years of the

Air Training Corps

Page 6: Launch Issue 1

Over 800 Air Training Corps cadets from all over Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire came together in Ely on Sunday and marched through the City from Broad Street to the Cathedral led by their very own marching band.

Hundreds lined the streets to watch as a sea of blue, all dressed in their smartest regalia and carrying the flags of their own squadrons paraded before a service was given to mark the occasion. Dignitaries from all across the region came including many of the different towns and cities Mayors.

The ATC was established on the 5th February 1941 in order to give part-time training to teenage and young men with the hope they

may later join the Royal Air Force. They were formed from an idea in 1938 where Air Commodore Chamier started the Air Defence Cadet Corp and saw literally thousands sign up. The Royal Warrant was signed for the ATC in 1941 and is to this day supported by the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Air Force.

Their first Air Commodore in Chief was George VI and took over the motto from ADCC of ‘Venture Adventure’.

With 34 Wings throughout the UK and with hundreds of squadrons, teenagers are encouraged to join the ATC at any level where they will be given the opportunity to learn new skills, go on adventures and even take flying lessons.

Thirty cyclists from Octagon Cycling Club are pedalling 300 miles over two days in May to raise money for two local charities. ‘The 300’ is an octagon shaped route from Ely, taking in Letchworth, Aylesbury, Chipping Norton, Birmingham, Loughborough, Grantham and Spalding.

Two of the cyclists are attempting the challenge on a tandem.

The fundraising group will set off from Ely Cathedral at 6am on Saturday 21st May and is aiming to return to the Cathedral by 6pm on Sunday 22nd May.

Octagon Cycling Club, which is well known for fundraising as well as eating cake on their training rides, is aiming to raise £10,000. This will be shared between Addenbrookes Charitable Trust (ACT) and youcanbiketoo which is a local organisation aiming to get everyone cycling, with a particular focus on people with disabilities and families riding together.

Corporate sponsors are being sought, who will

have their logos on the cyclists’ team kit in return for their donation. Local businesses wishing to take part can contact Octagon Cycling through the website.

Any individuals who wish to make a personal donation can do so at http://www.act4addenbrookes.org.uk/supporter/Octagon300Robin Jones, founding member of Octagon Cycling Club and one of the tandem riders, says they have been training hard for this event: “Some have made the ultimate sacrifice and given up cake and alcohol in January and we are regularly covering

50-60 miles on weekend training rides.”

Octagon Cycling Club has very personal reasons for choosing to raise money for ACT this year, as two members have had personal experience of the care provided by Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Neil Bowman's son Lucas was born with Supraventricular Tachycardia, a very rare heart condition resulting in a lengthy stay in the Rosie Hospital (PICU & high dependency). After a particularly traumatic few weeks Lucas went on to recover from his early heart complications due to the outstanding expertise and care from his Cardiologist, and is now a lively five-year-old.Neil comments: “To be told your 6 week old baby is seriously ill and the next 24 hours are critical

is the most devastating news any parent could possibly have to hear. We will be eternally grateful to Lucas' Cardiologist & The Rosie Hospital for ensuring that Lucas recovered from his ordeal and for the on-going care we are receiving. To show our gratitude we will support ACT as much as we can to continue to raise vital funds for our amazing local NHS hospital.”

Fellow cyclist Andrew Turton and his family also have good reason to support ACT.

Andrew’s son Edward was born with Down Syndrome and a major heart defect resulting in him spending the first four weeks of his life in NICU. Andrew is full of praise for the hospital staff: “The level of care and support from the nursing staff and Doctors was invaluable for the whole family and Edward is now a year old and doing well.”

Both Neil and Andrew are hoping that some of the funds that Octagon Cycling is aiming to raise will be used for the Children’s Ward and also to support families going through similar experiences and requiring the use of the free on-site accommodation.

On the 13th July

2015 we became

parents to our perfect

boy, Jack. What should have been the

most exciting day of our lives soon turned into the scariest as our new-born was rushed to intensive care. Soon after his birth we were told that he may have a heart condition.

After a two week stay in intensive care at Addenbrookes hospital and many appointments later it was decided our son needed more specialised care and an appointment was booked at GOSH. It was at this hospital appointment we were told that our son had a heart condition called Dilated Cardiomyopathy. I will always remember the

feeling of utter helplessness and the fear for our son and his future. My husband and I tried to remain positive but you can’t help but fear for the worst, especially when you are told that there is no cure, this can’t be fixed.

Although our friends and family were amazing, I just felt I needed extra support from parents who were having similar experiences. This is when I found a charity that focuses on helping children with cardiomyopathy. They have been incredible and have managed to bring me out of what seemed a very dark hole. They have put me in contact with families that have given me hope and have shown me a new way of living, a new way of normal. When I felt like nobody understood, the charity provided me with people who

did! I really don't know where I would be without the charity.

I get a lot of comments about how you'd never know our son was ill, and I'm sure nobody means offence by it, but it hurts because I know his little heart is working overtime 24/7 allowing him to be here living and completing the most simple of tasks! We won't really know the effect the condition will have on him until he is a little older and I guess that's what scares me the most. Though I am sure this charity will support our family through whatever the future holds. We couldn't ask for a braver happier boy! There aren’t many 6 month olds who don’t cry when having injections or having bloods taken!

I hate feeling so helpless…as a parent you want to fix things, to make things better for your child. I can’t do that for Jack but I can support the charity who’s supporting us. This is why I've decided to organise a charity event to raise money for children with

cardiomyopathy. It will be held at the Olive Tree in Ely on the 18th of February from 10am until 12pm. If anybody feels like they would like to help we are looking for donations tea, coffee, art supplies, cakes etc then that would be fantastic. Otherwise just come along and enjoy a family friendly morning with a few stalls and lots of cake! All are welcome, we look forward to seeing you there!

St. Mary's Primary School, Ely this evening talking about online safety for children. Many thanks to Mr Greenwood for inviting me along, and to the children and parents for their time and attention.Online safety is critically important for children of all ages - increasingly we find kids at younger and younger ages participating with online content.Do you know where your kids go online? As a parent you need to know:- How to review your search history on the internet;- How to impose parental controls on your home network;- Where your children have access to the internet when they are not at home;- What it is that attracts them to the internet

and why they use it.It is important that you can talk openly and honestly with your children about the nature of the internet and what is out there.Childnet.com have some excellent resources.
