Olmec 1200-400BCE
• Location: Veracruz and Tabasco Mexico
• Shaman assume the shape of animals- most powerful is a jaguar
Zapotec • Valley of Oaxaca
• Thought to be the first group in the Americas to develop written language
• Developed artisan work of clay, jade and gold
Early South American
• Very small groups cut off due to geography
• Although groups such as the Chavin Cult developed in the region there is no evidence of developed states
