The word heritage grates on me these days since it became a by-wordfor tattily packaged nostalgia. There’s only so much quaintlymarketed chutney that a boy can take flying under the heritage flag.
But if that makes me seem like an old curmudgeon, then believe me Iam not. I love our historical past, I just don’t like having it shrink-wrapped and delivered to me in bulk.
Ealier this year my friends M&J spotted an article that announcedthat the very last end of the pier variety show was being staged inCromer. I remember well going to end of the pier show as recently as 12years ago when I saw Lily Savage and Sonia in Blackpool. That was anight to remember, gales lashed the pier but it didn’t stop the diminutiveSonia belting out her hits and Lily slagging her off as she did it.Now it may be that since that ealier announcement someone hasdashed to the rescue of this much loved form of entertainment but weare still off to Cromer to see a night of variety in The Best of SeasideSpecial 2011. No doubt there will be singers, dancers, a comic and lotsof bright costumes and white smiling grins. I can’t wait.
Cromer of courseholds a second draw forme and that is theirfamed crabs. I amalready bracing myselffor three days of crab inits many forms, fromdressed to undressedshall we say. I want it all, and I want it now!
For the rest of the time I have no doubt we will be braving the bracingwinds as they come in off the North Sea and from across the Wash. I wantit to be blustery if not a little bleak, I want there to be drizzle and crashingwaves. I want to find teashops with mis-matched crockery and home-made cakes. I’d like to buy boiled sweets and Vimto and get back to ourhotel rooms and sit up drinking cocoa. Who needs heritage when you canlive it for real.

The Landlady isn’t ready for the grandfather clock

“C onnaught Road Council Schools”is what it says above the mainentrance which suggests, quite
rightly, that there were once severalschools on the site. Today there isarguably less than one. That’s no badnews though. The “Connaught Annexe” hasjust opened as a satellite branch ofnearby West Hove Infants School followingyears of uncertainty.
The building was designed by ThomasSimpson and built by John T Chappell at atotal cost of £12,180. Simpson was alsoresponsible for Downs Junior School,Finsbury Road School and St Luke’sSchool in Brighton. The Connaught ishis only surviving building in Hove.
I first came across the imposingstructure during its time as theConnaught Adult Education Centre. Itmay be a Victorian edifice but myconnection was Egyptian Art Deco –that was the subject of the coursethat I was attending courtesy oflocal expert Sarah Tobias.
The first schools officiallyopened there in 1884 with 229boys, 160 girls and 241 infants(presumably the infants were alsoboys and girls) but sadly closed in1984, 100 years after it opened.Separate entrances originallyexisted for teachers, junior boys,junior girls and mixed infants.Following the Connaught’s spell as an adult education centre, demand forschool places in lower Hove has assured its rightful position as a school forlocal children.
The Connaught Annexe will certainly be run by West Hove Infants, asuccessful local school, for its first two years. I’ve met West Hove’s excellentheadteacher, Wendy Harkness, before and was fortunate enough to meet theConnaught Annexe site head, Louise Smith, on my recent tour of the gleamingrefurbished building. It will eventually have three years of infants but for nowthere will be just three forms of reception-age children, 90 in total, with theother years added in due course. The tough choice of what to do about a juniorschool will have to be made soon too.
Although work is still underway, the building is clearly an excellent exampleof a Queen Anne-style school. Its first-rate state of preservation internally andexternally helped Brighton Society members, including Ninka Willcock, incampaigning for its Grade II listed status in 2009.
Without that victory, and a successful campaign from Mike Weatherley MPfor it to become a school again, perhaps we’d now be looking at a Tesco petrolstation instead of a fabulous new educational establishment.Get in touch: [email protected] or www.buildingopinions.com
Robert Nemeth visits Connaught Annexe
M y mother is seriously ill in hospital. A fortnight ago, the kids and Irushed up north to see her for one last time as the doctors thoughtshe wouldn’t last the weekend. The doctors are clearly not familiar
with the tour de force which is my mother. As my cousin Helen very aptly putit, “in the aftermath of nuclear war, there would be cockroaches, rats andauntie Kath”, meaning that she is a tough old bird. I have, therefore, since thatnot-so-final weekend, been up and down several times, fitting in as much as Ican with work shifts, foreign students and hospital visiting times.
The doctors are not too sure what is wrong with my mother, but she is notmaking things much easier by stoutly refusing treatment or furtherexaminations. Therefore, she could be around for weeks, months or evenyears and the situation seems tochange on a daily basis, with themedical staff not really appearingto have a clue through no realfault of their own.
Practicalities have to be sortedout and, while having a meal at aHarvester-type venue up northlast week, myself and her brotherand sister were discussing howwe thought my mother might wish to distributeher worldly goods if the worst came to theworst. She is the proud owner of two very loudgrandfather clocks, one of which – according tomy aunt – she was determined to continuewinding-up, even when she was so ill that theambulance was on its way to collect her. Itsuddenly occurred to the three of us that wecould well be on the receiving end of one ofthese gigantic timepieces and we looked ateach other in horror.
Realistically, all we can do for the timebeing is pass as much time as possible withher. For me this means eight hours a weekspent on a tortuous journey on the creepinglyslow (yet £40 cheaper) London-Midlandtrainline. In fact, I am on one such vessel withThe Big Daughter as I write this, tryingdesperately to make evening visiting hours.The day did not start off well, as due to trafficin central London, we missed the train we hadbooked by a gnat’s hair and owing tounsympathetic staff – to whom I was verypolite in spite of their unhelpfulness – had tobuy a whole new ticket for the next train. Atdouble the price of the booked ones. Next timeI will not bother to be so polite.
Meanwhile at Landlady Towers – which Irarely seem to see these days – a man withmatching Louis Vuitton luggage has moved in. Perhaps his English is so badthat he has mistaken it for The Grand Hotel. He has already annoyed me byrevacuuming my newly vacuumed carpet and I think that it’s probably bestthat I stay up north as much as possible as I’m unlikely to get on withsomeone who would wish to own a Louis Vuitton wash bag.

T here’s got to be some advantages to being 40. At the moment, I’mstruggling to think of them. I’m stuck in that middle ground. In the earlyyears, the landmarks and what you’re allowed, come thick and fast.
After about six months, new foodstuffs get introduced at virtually monthlyintervals. Youngest™ is only a year away from three years, the promised land,where you’re suddenly deemed old enough to be trusted with toys that have‘little bits’. (This was The Boy’s key knowledge prior to Youngest™ being born –he mustn’t allow him the small Lego.)
From The Boy’s point of view, the landmarks can’t come quick enough. “Iwish I was eight,” he will say, in the middle of his tea, pushing his potatoround his plate and looking wistfully at me.
“Why’s that?” He’ll name some obscure Lego vehicle,
an Imperial MTT 340 or something, thatwe’d probably seen six months ago. Imight have said it was a little bit old forhim, perhaps because his Christmaspresent had already been bought.
I’m not sure these age restrictionsare rigidly enforced. It’s not like at thetill when they suddenly shout out“Alcohol!”, they’re going to instead gofor: “Quite complicated Lego!!” And asupervisor will stroll up with a boredexpression, look at The Boy and say “Itsays eight years old here, but you looksix and a half at best.”
At the age of 40, it’s been a long timesince I’ve passed any significant agerestrictions. I think sex and voting werethe last. “This is the worst day ever.”That’s another of The Boy’s phrases. I askhim why. “Because I’m six.” He wants towatch Revenge Of The Sith which iscertificate 12. He will be prostate on thefloor with the unfairness of it all.
“Why can adults always do what theywant?” he asks. He’s probably doing adrawing of a snake or something, orlying on the sofa watching a DVD. Imight be changing a nappy, while mywife wipes Youngest™’s highchair for theumpteenth time that day. It doesn’t feel like we can do what we want.
My proposal is for some aspects of life to be held back, restricted untilyour 40th birthday. Not for any reasons of safety or sensibility; just tosweeten the pill. I’m proposing roast pork and also, let’s pick meringue to bebanned for everyone aged 39 and under. Afternoon sleeps should be madeobligatory, encouraged even. Wine between the hours of 7pm and 9pm,maybe. Any film from the ’70s banned until this age, lie-ins too, let’s put thatin (I can dream).
I just like the idea of a few random pleasures being suddenly allowed. Isthat selfish?
Idon’t dream of living in a housethat has a swimming pool, agalley kitchen or a hot tub on the
roof. I dream of a home that has aspace for everything. I fantasiseabout having room for a laundrybasket. (Rather than building atower of worn clothes and sheets infront of the washing machine.)
Spiders love these piles.Yesterday when I finally cleared upa pile, a big black spider darted off,looking lost and confused. "Wherethe hell has my home gone? It hadbeen there for ages...” My childscreamed as its long legs scarpereddown the hallway looking forshelter. I tried to remain calm andbe the ‘protector’ of my child(even though I was freaked). Ichased it, grabbing thenearest thing I could find.Which unfortunately was ahammer... It was at this pointthat my lovely hippyneighbour popped his headround my door, to find merunning around, randomly bashing the floor with a hammer. The sentence “Hi,just trying to get a kill a spider” didn’t impress and he offered to catch it andtake it outside.
My heart sank. Because when people offer to do this, you can’t say “but Iwant to kill it”. So you let them try catch the spider, and always, always,always they end up scaring it off and it ‘disappears’. They pass you theempty glass. “Hey it’s gone now”. No! It has not gone. It is now lurking.
Currently this one is lurking behind my washing machine. I’m scared to puta wash on in case it comes out to complain about the noise. I’m scared tomove the pile of clothes into the machine drum in case it’s moved in thereand has now grown into a super spider who will untangle himself from thelaundry, pop the wash on himself and then cruelly mock my housekeepingskills. “You think that’ll come out at 40 degrees!?!”
One day I will live in a home where not only there is space for a laundrybasket, but it will have sections for white, colours and darks. Hey, I know I’mjust in fantasy land now. One day I will have space for a towel cupboard.Imagine that! A whole cupboard for towels. At the moment my towels are ofno fixed abode. They live on radiators. They live in a cycle of wash, radiatorand The Pile. I did think about buying them their own special bathroom towelradiator, you know give them a sense of home, a sense of security. Thought itmight improve their self esteem, then I thought, don’t be so bloody idiotic, Ijust need to move into a bigger flat.
So I’m moving again. After all, I have a tenant for this place, that’s if he canforgive his new landlord for attempted murder. Hope he won’t be offended byme asking for references and a credit check though...
