freight trafile on the Union Pacificroad. Men are out from Omaha toOgdsn and it is reported on.the OregonShort Line. The strike here has assumad a more serious aspect, but tumors are. rife as to threatened violenceshould be discredited. There is no ob-jection made to the moving of pas-ten-
ger trains, but the striking brakemenare ou the alert to see that non-uni-
men are not smuggled aboard on the ar-rival of train at Laramie city. Thismorning Conductor Van Housen wasordered nut and when he called ''allaboard" there was slight cheering. Thetrain had moved about half its lengthwhen Conductor MilN was seen to sleupon the platform and a rush was madefor bim by a number of brakemen. Hewas forcibly ejected from the train andwas afterwards informed that if hemade another alteiuot to go out hewould be riddeu ou a rail. No objec-tion wag made to Conductor VanHousen leaving.
Another conductor was severely pummelled for speaking in debanoe of thewishes of the strikers. The train pulledinto Cheyenne on time. Large crowdshad assembled at the depot, butno evidence of trouble was visible. When the lime came for the departureof the train it quietly moved out, no ef-fort being made to delay or retain it.t ne crowd however continued to in"crease as it was known that aa effortwould be made to take out Superintendent UiuKinsnn's car and a special carcontaining "Bunch of Keys" company.A committee waited upon tho engineerand told him that be could go out at hisown risk. .Conductor Shiugle was alsowarned in a similar manner and thefinal result was that the train did notgo. The next train was allowed to takeout the theatrical company, but the superintendent s car was not allowed togo.
1 lie slrike in creatine: considerableinconvenience in this city among themerchants, and outside the labor unionsthere is little sympathy with the strikers aim not much among workmen generally. Interviews with conductors andother employes of the road show tbemnot to be in accord with tbe strikers. The Result of the I'arne Investlgatioa to

yestorday presented a letter received byliuu which was from the secretary ofthe Ohio Pavne legislative investigatingcommittee regarding the printing ol thereport that the committee reooully submitted to the United States senate. The letter slates that onexaminingoopyprinted by order of senate ne nndg mata surreptitous interpolation had beenmade in tbe copy furnished the printer, the matter interpolated not being in theoriginal copy sent to tbe senate uy theuhlo Iioihh of reoresentativaa..- Luc u -ternolation, the secretary says, is 'ofmatter intended to retlect on the goodfaith of the niHjority of the Ohio committee. On motion of Seuator Hoar theletter was referred to the committee onprivileges and elections.
THE INTERPOLATED MATTER.I'ho interpolated matter in the report
of the Pavne investigation, transmittedfrom Columbus to the senate consists ofthe following paragraph, which appearsat tbe mid of the volume made up of thenin ioritv and minority reports and tes .

"the majority have all alongconducted this investigation as thoughthev folt it incumbent upon them to undsomebody guilty; as though some greatpartv interests would be leodtirdizoilunless they reported somebody guiltyof something, we nave neiped tneiuto draw a drag net in every muddy poo),anywhere and everywhere they werepleased to designate, and every timethey thought they had captured a bossboodler and when they rushed in tograpple with and land him they invariably found it was only a small sucker.that they took between their fingersand thew back into bis native element. The majority report should read, thatalthough ibey didn't nnd anyone guiltyof corrupt practices, they think it aburning; shame that someone was notguilty of bribery, so they might reportbis capture by this committee.

Milwaukee, May ft Latest reports(rom Bay View show a much more seri-

Sis militarycompanies marched out of the groundsand were stationed in front of the works, and as the orowd approached, paying noatteution to orders to halt, the word tirewas given and a volley fired, The crowdbeat a hasty retreat when it was learnedthat five lives had been sacrificedand several persons wounded. Oneof the killed was a school boy. While tbe troublo was going on at BayView, a large crowd ot strikers and so-
cialists assembled at the MilwaukeeGarden, west side, and were preparingto carry out the programme of riot anadestruction. A platoon of sixty police-men and three infantry companies weredispatched thence and cleared tnepremises. The mob re assembled andproceeded to Best's brewery. The mobwas there confronted and dispersed bythe military. The rioters, or those otPolish nationality, at least, returned tothe city ond proceeded to sack the restdunoo of Captain Boorohardt, of theKosciuski guards; yesterday's tiringnaving been dona uy mat company,The residence is a complete wreck.1 be infuriated Polanders then assembled near the Polish church and a number decided to arm themselves and raidthe militia at Bay View this afternoon.
The Feeling la Chicago.
Cuicauo, May 5 The excitement oftho general populace growing out of themassacre planned and carried out bythe small band of anarchists and theirblind followers last night is very great.i ne city outwardly is very quiet, but idstreetcars and at every point, of gathering iu the city, the events of last nighthave been seriously discussod. Thewords beard on every side are those ofutter and abhorrent condemnation ofthe aesult made on the police. The occurrences of Monday and last night areascribed in the public mind to the teach-ing- s
and recent utterances principallyof men like August Spies, A. R. Parsonsand Samuel rielden, the speakers oflast night, ibey have been pointedout by nearly every puper in the citvduring tne last four days, and the tragicculuiiuationon Uesplames street oulyappeared to emphasize litem warnings.THEIR ARREST HAS BEEN REPEATEDLY
DEMANDED.
When the firing began last night Parsons was the ouly man seen tobe recognized. He was in a liquorstore at the corner of Desplumes andLake streets, the Socialists headquarters, within one hundred andti n y teet of the point where the deadlybomb was thrown among the ranks ofthe police. The lire at the police camefrom Hie samo direction and it is surmised that the criminals obtained theirguns and made Socialists' ball a lendezvous, and from thence they proceededto make their assault. Thev were concealed behind boxes aed barrels on thesidewalk.
FOLLOWING THE EXPLOSIONParjons was seeu in this place, accompat, led Dy nis negro wife, lor only amoment However and tnen disappearedwith other anarchists and policesenrohed for the three men all night butdid not succeed in nnding them. Alittle after 8 o'clock ihis morning allthree were found in close consultationin the oflice of the Arbeiter Zeitungnewspaper, xney were in consultatiouwhen the officers came on them. Thevexhibited alarm but made no resistance.1 bey were taken quietly to the centralpolice station, a block away, and up tov o'clock mis morning the publ:c badnot been aware of their arrest. Theyare Kept cioseiy guarded, and no one ispermuted to see tnem. it is not Knownwhat if any ohargos have been madeagainst tbem, nor what is the exact pelicy the city authorities intend to pursue.

Denver, May 4. The Republican'sWashington special says: On explanation of the joint resolution which wasIntroduced yestorday by Delegate Beanof Arizona, authorizing ihe president tooffer a reward of $25,000 for tbe killingor capture of Gerónimo, he states thatGerónimo leu ine white Mountainreservation, accompanied by sixtybucks, about one year ago, and' sincethat time he has raided a sootion ofnearly 100,000 square miles in NewAWxiuo, lower Arizona and northernMexico. Purine that time nearly onefifth of the United States army hag beenin fultloss pnisuit, while gome 800people have already been killed. Thevalue of property destroyed cannot beestimated. TO KILL OR CAPTUREthis blood-thirst- y and crafty Indianand in Mr. Bean's opinion the quickestand surest method is to offer a sufficientinducement for mountaineers, frontiersmen or Indian scouts to embark in tbeenterprise. "Put a round price uponGerónimo' bead," said Mr. Bean"and he will certainly be killed or captured. Our people care nothing for themeans employed. A New oda br lh Part Lariat.London. May 4, The queen formally
opened tbe Colonial Exhibition today.A prominent feature of the opening ceremonirs was the ode composed for theoccasion by lennvson. This was mnirniticently rendered by a vast choir ofcareiuuy selected voices. Tho ode wassung just previous to the queen's fortniai declaration that the exhibition wasopen. Ihe third portion of the ode wasevidently composed with a view ofstimulating international fraternity be-tween the two groat Knglish speakingnations, and is in the following words:
"Britain fought h- inns of yore;Rritain failed, and never more,( !are less of our gror lng kin.Shall we as our lather's sin?Men that in a narrower dayTJnprophetle rulers theyDrove from out the mother'! nest,1 liat young eagle of the west,To forage for herself alone.
The last part of the ode. which in infour portions, makes the following sig-nificant allusion to the present crisis inBritish politics:"Shalt we not, through good and 111,Clesve to one another still?Britain's mvriad voices rail.bona he welded, each and all,Into one imperial pole ;One with Britain heart and soul,One life, one Hair, one tloet, one throne.unwiLí, nold your own, and God guard all."
The oiieon was profoundly pleasedwith the ode and with tho mannor inwhich it was rendered by the choir. Shenodded and tmilod with pleasure nndapproval at each sentiment, as it wasbrought out, and seemed to exceedinglyenjoy the enthusiasm which tbe poomand music provoked in the vast oon- -

SENATE.
A Heated Political Diiraislea tamed by Iberv.teince mu,
Washington. Miy 4. After thepassajto of it number of private bills tbepostoftiee appropriation bill was laidbefore the senate.
Sir. Call fitTorod the proposal to approprlats $300,000 for the carriage ofthe United States mails to Central andSouth America, Jayán, China, etc. He(lid not regard it as a bubsidy. Sauls-bur- y
opposed the proposition. Halesaid according to Beck's explanationKiven yesterday tho postoflice depart-ment was more culpable than lie at Srstsupposed, as to the leaving at Pornani-buo- o
of a large body of Hio de J ameromails. From Beck's explanation. Halesaid it would seem that the postmastergeneral bad sent mails by an Englishsteamer, while knowing thoy wouldhave to lie over at Purnam buco, alongway this side of thoir destination, andwould have to there await the comingof the United Stales steamer for Brazil.
Hale could see no stronger illustra-tion of the preference of the postmas-ter general for f Jroign over Americanships since he had sont mails part ofthe way by foreign ships.
Plumb said no senator had shownthat the sum per mile provided by thoamendment was too much.
The proposed arrangement for torelgn mails was based on the theory thatit was a subsidy, but that we should ap-ply to our foreign mails the principlethat had for many years been apDliodto the transportation of inland mails ofthe United States.
Mr. Plumb asked how wo were to bobenefitted by the proposed arrange-ment.THE SOUTHERN STATES WOULD BE BEN-- .
EFICIAKIE3of this proposition; yet senators fromtbe southern states were opposing thisproposition. Thoy did not speak tbelanguage of modern progress on mod-ern civilization. Tho south today wasthe south of Calhoun, ot Yancoy, and ofJefferson Davis.
Morgan interrupted him to commenton the unfairness of this class of argu-ment at this late stnge of tho debate. The southern men, he said, had no opiportunity to roply to it.
Plumb said no senator should be cutoff from Aply by limitation of time; atleast his voto would bo cast for afull opportunity for roply. The southtoday in nntional control, ho contin-ued, responded to I he wishes, intertillsand principios inculcated bw Cnlhmin.enforced by Yancey, and representedtoday by Jefferson lia vis. He (Plumb)did not speak of that as in any sunse tobe personally, offensive, or as quiilify-in- g
the personal sincerity of any uianiMorgin remarked that uo such Impu-
tation or accusation liad the slightest of-fense for him. Kvery name mentionedby Plum I) was coiiaecralud in Morgan'smemory as tho mima of an
HONOltAIILK AND CKEAT MAN.He hoped the state of Kansas might
some time or other produce such char-acters as Calhoun, Yancey or Davis.
Plumb re tori oil that Morgan had thataspiration Inr Khiishs all to himself.Plumb would nut tiike one leaf from thochaplot of any niun as hii houorahle, sincere, or uble man, lj.it those menrepresented the soulli of slavery; thesouth that did not want free labor; sotte south took up tódav the bunion ofthat song where it Jell off in 'III . It wasan old doctrine in favor of capitalagainst labor. Tho capitalist with hiscoffers tilled and believing in tho law ofsupply and iloiiiaml as applied lo labor, like everything else, siiil, "nivo meright to buy my ships where 1 please, whera I can buy cheaply products oflabor of other countries and 1 don't careabout, American labor,"
After considerable further discussiona vote was tnkou on the lina! passage oftho bill as follows: yeas, 45; imjs 10.
IN t'AVOU OF UNITED STATES SDl'UKMACY
Morgan, offered a series of resolutionswhich were ordered printed and to lioon tho table, declaring it is the duty ofcongress to extend necessary mail facil-ities across the sens from the prin cipalports of all foreign c mntries with whichthe United States has any considerabletrade or where the trrulu can bo profita-ble developod; that it is tbe duty of con-gros- s
to provide that American peopleshall have the right to buy ships abroadand import them at reasonable rates ofduly, and the laws prohibiting the im-
portation of foreign built ships aril asunjust and unwiso as laws would bothat would prohibit impoitation ot allother articles of foreign maniifactue.
The senate then adjourned.

Washington, May 4. Tho housecenimitteo on foreign affairs today ed
to call up in turn tbe Chinese indemnity bill and Morrow's Chinese re-
striction bill when the committee isnext called by the speaker.
AFTER THE MORMONS.
Hearing on tho Mormon question wasresumed by the ot thohouse committee on judiciary today.Miss Kate Field and a number of otherladies wore present. West, a memberof tbe Utah legislatuie, and DelegateCaine made addresses opposing the
bill.giving whisky a snow.
The houso conuniltoe on wnys andmeans will report favorably on tho billto amend laws relating to tho entry ofdistilled spirits in distillery or in anyspecial bonded warohouse, and thewithdrawal of sam ) therefrom and the
of tax thoroon. Tho ossontialÍiaymont of tho bill, as explained bv itsauthor, is that it will allow distillodspirits to remain in warehouses withoutpayment ot tax as long as tho owner de-
sires instead of payment being madecompulsory at tho expiration of throeyears as now provided by law. A
report was also ordurod on thebill introduced by Morrison to repeal allprovisions of law which give commis-
sions to collectors of internal rovenueon taxes collected by them upon disstilled spirits.

An Art el lajaatlee. It comes to light that while the county
commissioners have made an appropnation for watering the plaza park.they have failed to do so for the twoparks on tue east side. Why this dinerencer tins one side of tins city anymore claim upon trie couutj oniciaithan the other? Many persons In theold town complain of a sectional feeling between the two parts of the cityCertainly such conduct as this, is calculated to promote this state of feeling, and is largely responsible for it. Lincoin park, in the southern part of theeast side, nas been a beautitul place aconstant exhortation to the people tobeautify their private residences. Ithas increased the value of the propertvin all its neighborhood, thus adding tothe wealth of tbecity and the income oftne oounty. in ow, lor lack ot appropriation, the water has been cut off, thetrees and grass are dying, and thewhole plaoe bids fair to return to desolation and barrenness. This errorshould at onoe be rectified, or the taxpayers of the east side will demand thereason why.
An Evening's Enjoyment. The entertainment given last evening
by the primary department ot theAcademy, was quite an enjoyable affair, alike to the audience and to the periorrners. Iho little onos, girls aswell as boys, were thoroughly self pos-sessed and well drilled in their respective parts, lhe progrnnnne. by Itsjudicious selection, reflected creditupon the teachers, and the thoroughness of the drill showed thoir patientdevolion to their tank. Tho recitations.solos, choruses, and tho pantomiue wereall excellent; and to particularize thus i
deserving special mention, would hesimply to reprint the programme. Bytne way, tne programme was printed byArtie and Frank Sloan, aud whilerather a curious specimen of art, speakswell lor tue piuuk and intention ot tueyoung typos. The Academy is an institution of which our city is justlyprona, and one wnicn assists very largely in milking Las Vegas the educationalcenter ot tte territory.

BlanchardandJefl'orson Kaynolds were appointed acommittee to negotiate witli Mr. Humsoy of the Palace hotel, Santa Fe, andthey left this morning for that city inthe dischargo of their commission. There is no interest of more vital importance to the welfare of our city than thorunning of a hotel at the Plaza, whichsnail be hrst-clas- s in everv paiticuiar. The building is there, the furniture isthere. It remains only for the board ofdirectors to see that tne man is there also. If they have such a man at present.keep him; if such a man is not in NewMexico, briug biui out from the east.
