MILES HIGH PARTY & OTHER LIES AND RUMORS So, we did the Miles High party on Feb, 15 and we had a great turnout. Now this is more of a dealership thing, but without the dealership, we don’t exist. I guess there were over 50 bikers there and a few guests. Quite a few of us received awards for the miles we rode and some that missed the event also got mentioned.2018? Debby announced that we’ll do the same thing with different awards for the tiers. I enjoyed

this contest, that Debby insists isn’t a contest, and plan to do it again. This year I came in second with Dizzy Jake kicking my ass by some 6000 miles. Great job Dizzy! If you look under the bell, the guy with the Harley orange beard is Dizzy.

SO, WHAT ARE YOUR RIDING PLANS FOR 2018? Well, for Nina and me, we’re taking most trips on the Harley. We do have plans for June that include a gathering of people from a Harley-Davidson Forum that I’m on and participate in almost daily. They call it the Collision and it’s in Bardstown Kentucky this year. This will be the 6th Collision and our first. After that weekend, we plan to head south to do the Tail of the Dragon. Leaving the tail finds us heading north maybe to Vermont or to Madison Ohio to visit with some friends. Since they’re so close to Lake Erie, we’ll be skirting the south side of the lake while heading west to Holland Michigan to visit Mom. While there, I will abandon Nina and head east to Canada to visit a different set of friends. These people are “different” from my usual group of friends. One is a guy that is unaware that the 60’s has passed, but he lives the dream. Another is a retired and handicapped Canadian military man who immerses himself in U.S. politics far more than our entire congress creatures. There are many of our old crowd that wants this meet up live-streamed on the web. Leaving Canada the next day, I head back to rescue Nina from Mom and ride the Holland area. Milwaukee is our next stop after a fairy ride across the lake. My sister does the books for the company that owns the boats, so I doubt the ride will cost me much. After leaving the Harley museum, we’ll wander our way back home. And then there’s the SDC-HOG rides we have planned for the year. And then there’s my determination to kick Dizzy’s ass in the Mile’s High Club Contest to win in 2018.

SDC-HOG MEMBERSHIP CARDS - I know many of you want an updated membership card and I’m ready to start printing and laminating them starting on 03/05/18. Please send me an email if you wish a card. PLEASE NOTE: The membership cards have no value and get you into nothing, but I know many of you use them while traveling as a form of I.D. with other chapters. Email me to let me know.

OUR SAFETY GUY SPEAKS! Winter actually came for another visit and was gone the same day. Guess Mother Nature is playing with us. This winter has, to say the lease, been different! The snow and the rain soaked into the ground where we need it and the temperature hit the 40’s and I was happy. While riding around I observed a lot of areas that still showed that not all is well. We still need to ride on the side of caution and pay attention to all the signs such as the red snow melt on the roads and the leaves piled up and the ones on the bottom of the pile are covered in frozen water. Now, do not forget about all the pot holes. If you remember a few months back the city started a program and requested pictures of the roads that had pot holes and any repairs that needed to be addressed. All you had to do is put a Red Bull’s eye on you, step into traffic and hope you did not get run over while taking pictures of our neglected local roads. I think you can probably tell that not much has happened. Wonder why?? I will get off my soap box on that subject. Let us all be observant while riding and don’t get complacent about the roads cause sooner or later the gremlin will bite your ass! The good side of all this is that spring is on its way and then we only have to deal with the wind,🤪 . Be sure to keep your head moving and your eyes searching for all the dangers we encounter while riding. Please be sure to check the events calendar for rides and other events and please support the dealership. In closing ride safe and I will see you on the road.

ALL THE HISTORY THAT’S FIT TO PRINT:They say the past is prologue so maybe this photo from 2014 of a HD-built electric motorcycle used in the film, The Avengers, may actually become reality in the next year or two. For those needing a memory jolt, Scarlett Johansen, sat astride this scooter in the film. The Company says they have 30 prototypes of electric motorcycles and expect to put at least one into production within the next 18 months. The advantage of electric is of course full power available immediately without going thru the gears. Therefore, no transmission is necessary. Very fast! Easy to ride! BMW is even discussing gyroscopic self-balancing so you don’t have to put your foot down when stopped. It is hard for me to imagine a fast motorcycle that mildly hums without any rumbles. If this keeps up, you won’t have to actually go on a ride. Just send your motorcycle with a GoPro to validate your participation in an event.

2018 MILES HIGH CLUB (CONTEST?)So, the Miles High Club (contest) is finished and I didn’t win, but my pal and riding buddy Dizzy Jake did win, leaving me in the dust by 6000+ miles. Great job Dizzy! Club or Contest? What’s your opinion? Me, I’ll call it the Miles High Contest while Debby thinks of it as the Miles High Club! Either way, I enjoyed the daylights out of the 2017 version and plan on no changes for 2018. I’m gonna ride my bike everywhere I can. Pretty much the only errand I couldn’t run on the Ultra was the time I ran into SF to pick up a case of 8 foot fluorescents for my store. I was willing, but common sense won out.ANYWAY! The 2018 version is up and running now! Stop by Santa Fe Harley-Davidson and talk to one of the cashiers about getting your name on enter in this year’s contest so your miles can be logged. Stop by monthly and have a store employee update your miles in the club database. The start date has been moved up 1 month to maximize the miles. Last year we rode slightly more than 500,000 miles, so let’s see if we can break the 750,000 mile mark in 2018!

About the HOG name and where it came from: turns out our club is, in a way, named after an actual piglet named Johnny. This story begins back around 1920 when the factory sponsored, dirt track race team was clobbering all comers. They were known then proudly as the “Wrecking Crew”. During the same time period there was a piglet, named Johnny, who was granted membership status by the Wrecking Crew. After each win, said pig would be scooped up by the winning rider and a victory lap ensued. The name Wrecking Crew faded as the team became known as the “Harley Hogs”. Over time, the term “Hogs” endured and became slang for a HD motorcycle or motorcyclist. The 3rd edition of the Dictionary of American Slang contains an entry for “hog” as being “a 1960s motorcycle or motorcyclist” with a following notation mentioning the HD company. By 1983, the year our club began, HOG was the obvious name choice for the first factory sponsored motorcycle club, the Harley Owners Group. Oink!

In other alternative fuel news, the Australians down under have developed a new power source of their own. I don’t know if it will catch on up here or even if our editor will print this but……

My apologies to all those who cannot unsee this.See you on the road. Cheers. John Shannon

Editor’s note:If you submit it, I will print it. Everyone’s got an ass, and this submission tells me that Becky has two! Hers and . . . you!March 1,2,or 3 will see me on my bike again!

My arm has healed sufficiently for me to ride again and my bike will be done by then too!

More than half a million motorcycle miles behind me, more than a million motorcycle miles ahead of me... and I smile because I don't know, nor care, where I'm going. All I know is that it is out there - ahead. The sun is shining and I'm enjoying being alone on my motorcycle riding down the road to... somewhere, somewhere way out there into the future, you know: around the next bend, over the next rise. Out there - ahead. The heart of my Harley is beating at a rate of almost 3,000 times a minute, the tires go round and round, the shocks go up and down waiting for today's ride to end - right where tomorrow's begins: out there - ahead. Every eight seconds my eyes make their eternal sweep: road ahead, to the sides, mirrors, check the wind, instruments, over and over again as the odometer counts up the miles, each and every one different, no two ever the same as I ride toward the future, out there - ahead. Blissfully I watch America roll by underneath my tires, it's like I'm making the world spin. The sky rotates over my handlebars, clouds sliding away off to the sides. Earth smells reach out to me along with the loud THAWK! of a bug whose last thought was: "Nice Harley!" while I look out there - ahead. Together with my Harley, we explore, we experience, we see, we smell and we converse with all of America while looking out there - ahead. Sounds and smells combine with the sights embedding themselves into my memory of the miles gone by with a hint of the miles to come, out there - ahead. Motorcycling is one of the few total experiences in life. The whole body participates. The mind is constantly active, even with the XM radio playing softly in the background. (XM REALLY IS GREAT!) Being a pilot or scuba diver can come close. When you are at the controls, banking and weaving between the cloud tops or diving down the sheer face of the coral reef, you can kinda compare that to riding a motorcycle. Those comparisons of having spacial abilities (situation awareness) might give you more of the feel, the idea, of riding. And I'm still going, following my headlamp, weaving between hills, topping mountains, crossing the plains, looking down at rivers, smelling the swamps, being part of it all as I look out there - ahead. So, thanks for coming alone for the ride. We'll talk about America, what is seen, smelled, heard and felt. Topography, geography, history, meteorology, crops, flora, fauna, those cute pronghorn, roads, bridges, people and the religion of motorcycling will be subjects of conversations. All of it, as I look out there - ahead. I'm so ALIVE, living on my motorcycle. I've "died" a few times, come so very close to death... being alive and motorcycling is so visceral, has so very much meaning, that the smile never fades even in bad weather or bad traffic. I'm so grateful that I get to savor life! I'm so ALIVE! riding my motorcycle as I look into the sunny future out there - ahead. I sense a storm coming - it's OK, rain washes off in the shower, the clothes can be cleaned. It's getting colder, it's OK, I can layer up. Weather observed and experienced as I look out there - ahead.

Attached photo is me getting the award last night, from the owners of Santa Fe Harley Davidson, for most miles in the 2017 Miles High Club. If you look very closely you can see a photo of my Harley on the white screen.

Your reporter, Dizzy Jake

Our Lifeblood

Man, it's March already. How the hell did that happen? In just two weeks we start opening again on Sundays. Some of you may know that the leadership team at SFHD (Wayne, Chris, Audrey, Hightower, Jim, Debby & me (or is it "I") go offsite a number of times each winter to work on being better. Better leaders, Better Managers and to have a Better Understanding of our business and our industry. We have put a strong focus on our Organizational Health this year.

We learned (re-learned) and totally recognize that there are few business in the world that have relationships with customers that are so.....intimate (it seems like the right word - don't go rouge on me Glen). There is something personal and tangible about going to your local Harley-Davidson Dealership. You all become part of the family. You share in our success and our losses. You share concern when we lose a team member and you are very welcoming to the new people that join us. We also feel the pain of losing one of you. As a retailer of motorcycles we understand we attract customers (and crew) that have a wanderlust and passion for this motorcycle thing we all do. It is what makes it exciting, risky, challenging and rewarding everyday.

As leaders, we understand its our responsibility to care for the people in our charge. To be understanding and disciplined, to be Humble, Hungry and People Smart. We are far from perfect and have many mistakes that we painfully review in the hopes of not repeating. We have engaged our team to hold us accountable to our Core Purpose (To Provide Life Enhancing Experiences - Internally & Externally). This business has one of the most challenging distribution channels in the world and we work with a manufacture that thinks 40-50-100 years ahead. Not just the next quarter for the shareholders. Harley-Davidson is in its' 115th year - and we just got announcement of two new Sporty's that are coming our way. Plus we are going to have to figure out how to change the oil on an Electric Motorcycle in the next 18 months (see the LiveWire - somewhere in this newsletter) . We keep asking where the drain plug is?

We are excited about what the 2018 full boar riding season is about. We all came away knowing that selling motorcycles is our Lifeblood. It is what we need to to do to fulfill our Core Purpose, to provide a home for our team and to provide a 3rd Place for you all. We recognize that home is often your first place and where you spend much of your personal time, work for most is the second place and we want to exist to be the other, or the 3rd place you want to come and "hang-out". Where you feel comfortable meeting a few buddies for a ride, taking a nap on one of our chairs or making your way out back to talk shop.

Our entire team is focused on getting more people on Harley's this year. To grow our ridership and presence in New Mexico. This will make the club stronger, the dealership stronger and our industry stronger. We thank you for choosing us, all the support you provide and we promise we will work hard to enhance your lives everyday.

Thank you to all of you for being part of this "hybrid" Club we call the Sangre De Cristo HOG Chapter.

Cheers,

David

P.S. RIP - Jeannie - you enhanced our life with your passion and presence.

Harley-Davidson is Not FailingSnagged from the internet somewhere

Much of the mainstream press have been predicting the failure of the motorcycle industry. They say: Sales are down; Riders are aging out; Millennials aren’t buying. They offer “news” like Harley-Davidson’s disappointing financial reports and the plant closure in Kansas City as some indicator of a systemic industry failure.

Stop reading fake news! They do not understand motorcycles or the industry. They haven’t done any research. They simply parrot one another. Their predictions couldn’t be further from truth. First, the U.S. motorcycle industry has consistently sold 500,000 new bikes a year for the last decade. There have only been two sales bubbles that saw annual sales exceed 500k units (in the 1970s and 2002-2008). Outside of those two bubbles, 500k units per year is better than every other year, as well as the 120 year historical sales average. Second, there are currently more than 8 million registered motorcycles in the U.S. This is more than at any other point in history, including during both bubbles. There have been over 10 million motorcycles sold in the U.S. since the turn of the century. Hardly failure. Finally, as part of their strategic growth plan, Harley-Davidson combined their “midsize” Dyna and Softail models into a single, modernized and entirely new Softail platform. Having a single platform to support a majority of their upcoming models is substantially more cost effective, and what every other automotive and motorcycle manufacturer has already done. It reduces manufacturing costs and increases profitability. It was a smart business decision for the future of the Motor Company. The Kansas City plant primarily manufactured Dynas, which no longer exist. The remaining Sportster and Street models (in much smaller volume) are being retooled at the York, Pennsylvania plant, which will increase capacity to meet the demand. The KC plant was no longer necessary.

Your Monthly Funny! While riding my Harley, I swerved to avoid hitting a deer, lost control and landed in a ditch, severely banging my head.Dazed and confused I crawled out of the ditch to the edge of the road when a shiny new convertible pulled up with a very beautiful woman who asked, "Are you okay?"As I looked up, I noticed she was wearing a low cut blouse with cleavage to die for..."I'm okay I think," I replied as I pulled myself up to the side of the car to get a closer look. She said, “Get in and I’ll take you home so I can clean and bandage that nasty scrape on your head.”"That's nice of you," I answered, "but I don't think my wife will like me doing that!""Oh, come now, I’m a nurse," she insisted. "I need to see if you have any more scrapes and then treat them properly."Well, she was really pretty and very persuasive. Being sort of shaken and weak, I agreed, but repeated, "I'm sure my wife won't like this."We arrived at her place which was just few miles away and, after a couple of cold beers and the bandaging, I thanked her and said, "I feel a lot better, but I know my wife is going to be really upset so I'd better go now.""Don't be silly!" she said with a smile, while unbuttoning her blouse exposing the most beautiful set of boobs I’ve ever seen. "Stay for a while. She won't know anything. By the way, where is she?""Still in the ditch with my Harley, I guess."

Trip Planning and GPS Navigation Tips By: Fritz (Rumblerider) Besch

First off, I’m no expert on this stuff, but between Carolyn and I we have developed quite a few long range trip plans that have turned out very nicely. This article explains the methodology that we use to make our trips worry free albeit all planned out before we leave. If you’re a free spirit that likes to jump on your bike and go without plans for how you will get there or where you will sleep, then this article isn’t for you.

Navigation software on my desktop computer is the hub of our planning methodology. Since I have a 2013 CVO Ultra Classic with the factory installed Garmin Zumo Road Tech 660, I use the free Garmin Basecamp software available from Garmin.com. If you have a newer bike with the Rushmore system, you don’t have a Garmin navigation system. In that case, you can use the Harley Davidson Ride Planner (https://rideplanner.harley-davidson.com/rideplanner/ridePlanner.jsp). Ride Planner allows you to utilize other’s routes and make them your own, so you don’t always have to start from scratch. Ride Planner also allows you to share your routes on the website so that anyone you are traveling with can download it and load it into their bike. You can also export routes and waypoints from Basecamp, in the same .gpx format, onto a stick and upload it into your Rushmore system. Since I have other Garmin devices and have been using them much longer than I’ve had a Harley, I developed a large database of routes and waypoints in my Basecamp library. If you have any Garmin device with North American Maps included (hopefully with lifetime updates) you can connect your device and use the maps on your home computer within Basecamp. If you have lifetime updates, you can download updated maps to your computer while you use Garmin Express (another free program from Garmin) to update your device. The advantage of downloading maps to your computer is that you won’t have to keep your device connected to your computer while planning routes.

When we plan to go on a long trip, I’ll start by getting on Basecamp and putting in the starting point and the end point of the trip. I’ll let Basecamp create a route from those two points. Since I have my default routing preferences set to “fastest route”, I’ll get the “fastest” route. I also have avoidances established in my preferences to avoid all unpaved roads. This keeps me out of the weeds and gives me the options of adding roads that I know I want to go on anyway (like NF-249 off the North end of the Devil’s Highway, that Garmin still thinks is unpaved).

So with my initial route established, I’ll get out the HOG Touring Handbook and start looking for scenic rides nearby my initial route. I’ll do my best to make sure we can hit those scenic rides while making progress toward our destination. Meanwhile, Carolyn will start looking at total distances and try to find stopping points along the way with the goal of limiting our daily ride distances to around 300 miles. This gives us plenty of time to stop and eat, stop and take pictures and to keep ourselves from getting too wasted on multi-day trips. She’ll throw out some stopping cities, and I’ll try to make them fit. I always try to get my scenic route selections put into the plan before she starts putting in stopping points. We iterate the plan until there’s a balance in daily distances and scenic riding opportunities. When I exhaust the scenic routes from the handbook, I’ll start looking at paved highways that look twisty and/or they are going through parks, forests, or over mountains. On our way to Alaska this year, I had a nice twisty road planned in to go see Spirit Lake near Mt. St. Helens. Most of the way there, we stopped at a Mt. St. Helens information office and discovered that the road was still closed and covered with snow (15 feet of it in July!). We had to backtrack to get around to the main visitor center before we could go to the mountain. Lesson learned….

Carolyn’s tools of choice are Google Maps and Tripadvisor. She’ll use Google Maps to do the same thing I do in Basecamp to figure out distances and try and set up stopping points. She uses Tripadvisor to find decent motels at those stopping points. Carolyn looks at motels with a focus on good ratings with a secondary priority of being able to park the bike nearby the room. We use Google Earth to visually check out the motel. I also use Google Earth to check out roads and gas stations that I might be considering. Recently Google Earth eliminated a feature where you could open up a view of a waypoint from within Basecamp, but you can still do it if you export the route or waypoint as a “.kml” file. You can then open up the file with Google Earth and get right down on the road and look around.

When I first started using Basecamp, I hated it! It’s not intuitive and I had lots of issues with trying to figure out how to manage waypoints and routes in the tool. I tried the Harley Davidson Ride Planner and found it too restrictive in how it limited me from planning the roads inside national parks. I stumbled upon a great tutorial for Basecamp developed by New England Riders. They ride adventure bikes, so some of their recommendations need to be tailored for our Harleys, like disabling all avoidances to include dirt roads. Their Learn Basecamp tutorial is here: http://www.newenglandriders.org/GPS/Learn_BaseCamp.htm. The tutorial is a bit dated with respect to opening up Google Earth from Basecamp, but still very informative. After going through their tutorial, I learned how to use Basecamp and have been an avid user of it ever since.

One other critical element learned from the tutorial is to plan your routes in the Car activity mode and to put lots of waypoints in it. Then when others import it, they can also use Car activity mode and all will synchronize nicely. Different activity modes on Rushmore or any other GPS will take liberties with the route when it is imported and cause a large disparity in everyone’s routes.

If you’re planning a trip and you want to get a starting point or rough idea on how you will accomplish it, check out the Harley Davidson Ride Planner, the Harley Davidson Touring Handbook, and Garmin Basecamp. You can email me too. If I have the route, I’ll send it back to you in the format of your choice. Word of caution, If I send you a route, you’ll have to double-check it to be sure its still valid, as we all know roads and businesses change daily. Check out these tools and others that your HOG Chapter members use, they will save you lots of time and help you to know where you are going before you go.
