LAS CONDICIONES
MENTALES Y
EMOCIONALES
This is a lesson I present in conjunction with the novel Las batallas en el
desierto, by José Emilio Pacheco. I use it at a point in the novel where the
protagonist’s parents think he is a problem child with a “condición,” and
they take him to a psychiatrist for treatment. Here, students discuss the
broader theme of societal perceptions of people that might be considered
“crazy”, as well as practice vocabulary related to health and expressing
opinions. By using examples from art and literature, students also deepen
their cultural background knowledge.
I first ask students to brainstorm
words related to health and
wellness. I then display this
doodle and ask them to relate
the words to each other and
whether or not they can be
related to mental health as well.
• Discutid si tienen enfermedades mentales o no. Una
In this activity, students see images of recognizable figures that
could be considered “crazy.” They must identity the
person/character, and discuss why they would agree or
disagree with society’s judgment of them. I do this activity
either as a class discussion, if the group is talkative and I see
that everyone is participating freely. Otherwise, I distribute the
following images to partners or small groups and ask them to
prepare comments to share in the class discussion afterwards.
(el artista de estos cuadros… ¿quién es?)
Goya, La quinta del sordo
Here, I take a moment to
divulge information about
Goya’s series of Los
cuadros negros and how
they were lifted off the walls
of his house to place in El
Museo del Prado.
¿Y este artista?
This is the main character, Cayetana, from the Peruvian movie, Las malas
intenciones (2011), which we watched in class.
familia.
• Grupo C: ¡Carlos viene a estudiar a Yale!
The following two slides show writing and role
play activities that I use at the end of class for
students to practice extended production in
the target language.
Carlos vuelve.
