CORPORATION DEFINITION

Investopedia’s Definition:

A corporation is created (incorporated) by a group of shareholders who have ownership of the corporation, represented by their holding of common stock. Shareholders elect a board of directors (generally receiving one vote per share) who appoint and oversee management of the corporation. Although a corporation does not necessarily have to be for profit, the vast majority of corporations are setup with the goal of providing a return for its shareholders. When you purchase stock you are becoming part owner in a corporation.

SO…WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE SOME FORM OF CORPORATE CONNECTION WITH AN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE?

Page 13: Larry H. Miller Group on Campus

CORPORATE-ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIPS IS A TWO-WAY STREET

• Corporations are given the chances of attracting and accessing the brightest and best students for employment. As such, the successful recruitment of new employees can have a major impact on the company’s strategic direction and competitive position.

• Close relationships with an academic institutions faculty can provide valuable resource for new ideas and new perspectives for identifying and solving critical business problems.

ON THE OTHER HAND…

• A strategic alliance with a corporate partner can be extremely valuable to an academic institution

• A key relationship with a business partner can open doors for research opportunities and insight into new and innovative business practices.

• Sponsorships: Corporate-sponsored projects help heighten students problem solving skills, expand tolerance for ambiguity, and encourage polishing social and presentation skills.

WHAT DOES THE LARRY H. MILLER GROUP GAIN?

The Larry H. Miller Group gives the impression at first glance that they give SLCC opportunities out of charity but there is no way a corporation is all giving and non-gaining. That would defeat the purpose of a growing corporation.

So what exactly does the Larry H. Miller Group gain from associating with SLCC?

That is what I will be investigating in this report.

THE SURVEY

A survey was given to attending persons at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). The questions given are: 1. Do you know what the Larry H. Miller Group is?

2. Do you know about the Larry H. Miller on SLCC Campus? Or its connection to the school?

3. What opportunities do you believe the Larry H. Miller Group creates or gives to SLCC?

4. What do you believe a corporation like Larry H. Miller receives from SLCC?

5. After/Continuing associating with SLCC, will you be interested in having any sort of connection to the Larry H. Miller Group? Why or Why not?

6. Are you going into Business as a major

7. To Finish, Please write your first and last name.

Page 18: Larry H. Miller Group on Campus

THE SURVEY’S RESULTSThe survey showed that 25% of the people who took the survey don’t know about the Miller group and of the 75% that do know about the group, only a quarter know of any sort of connection the company has with SLCC.

To sum it up, only 25% of the total people who took the survey know about the Miller Group’s involvement with SLCC.

This information is important because of the group’s donation in creating a successful business section of SLCC’s campus and with the few students that are going into a business major, the survey has shown that these students haven’t learned or heard about it and the advantages available.

Page 19: Larry H. Miller Group on Campus

THE SURVEY’S RESULTS

On the written answer for Question 3 concerning what the Miller group gives to SLCC, some know that there is a campus named after the group and a place to take classes but not how it came to be or any background information. Only a few speculated that from the programs given at the Miller Campus, that the Miller Group may employ these SLCC graduates. With limited information, this answer is unknown at this point of time.

Page 20: Larry H. Miller Group on Campus

THE SURVEY’S RESULTS

For Question 4’s written response, it questioned what the corporation (might) receive from SLCC, as an exchange for giving them their donation. Some answers were uncertain but others speculated that there is money, advertising, and future employees opportunities. At this time, there is no conclusive data found for these answers, but it is understandable if it were used for advertising.

THE DONATION & MILLER’S REASONS

• Over $50 million donation in 2007 for entire Miller Campus• Larry H. Miller’s vision is displayed prominently at the campus: “This

campus was founded on the belief that the preservation of the principles of a free enterprise society lies in the hands of entrepreneurs.” ("SLCC's Miller Campus Means Business...and so Much More.“ 4)

• Miller viewed himself as a “bridge-builder,” a man who could get things done in the community and often as a third party.

• Believed that he was more effective as an independent bipartisan citizen than working in a political office.

Page 22: Larry H. Miller Group on Campus

CONCLUSIONLarry H. Miller created the Miller Group that has control over some of the largest and important buildings in the Salt Lake Valley, such as the Energy Solutions Arena, Megaplex Jordon Commons, etc. While still alive, he did his best to be a “bridge-builder” in the local community. In order to give others a chance to become something more in their futures, he donated over $50 million to Salt Lake Community College. It has given more opportunities that has allowed students to learn importance in entrepreneurship to public security to automotive works and to the culinary arts. In the end, after researching what the Miller Group gains from SLCC, I have found that the Miller Group really doesn’t get much in return other than promotional value and a famous name to be learned. For those students that wish to deepen their understanding of any of the opportunities that the Miller Campus has available, I recommend that it would be best to take advantage of the largest gift a community college has ever received from a private party.
